The newest addition to our
office staff is Tresha Matthews
who fills the position of
accountant for the community.
Born and raised in the Bronx,
NY, she earned her B.A. in
accounting there from Monroe
College before moving to
Wisconsin where she met and
married her husband Damien
three years ago.
Among Tresha’s hobbies
are tennis, basketball and . .
. football! When she was in
high school she and her family
fought hard to allow her to
play on the boys’ football
team, but she was never
allowed the opportunity.
So now she is considering
joining the new LFL. No,
not the Ladies Football
League, the LINGERIE
Football League! With her
husband as coach, she has
already started training, and
should be ready by August
if she does decide to play in
this new professional league
that is now established in
eleven states. The games are
played on the weekend so
they would not interfere with
her work at SVE.
The Matthews family
includes Mark 15, Nasir 7,
Daesha 3, the only girl, and
baby Dash 2. Besides her full
time job and taking care of
her family, Tresha is working
towards her doctorate at the
University of Phoenix, where
she also earned her Masters.
Another year and one half
will see that goal attained
and she would eventually
like to use all this knowledge
to teach, including her own
two youngest with home
schooling.
Since coming on board
last November, Tresha has
proven to be a valuable asset
to our office staff so give
her a friendly SVE hello,
and who knows – you might
be making the trek out to
the University of Phoenix
Stadium some day to see her
play in a pro football game.
With Warner retired, we need
a new player to look up too!
SALUTE TO OUR VETERANS
Orlyn Raisch
In August 1939 Orlyn Raisch enlisted
in the U.S. Navy and went through boot
camp at the Great Lakes Naval Training
station. He graduated an Apprentice
Seaman, posted to the carrier USS
Lexington in Bremerton, Washington.
Assigned to the main drive engines, he
became a Fireman second class with
home port in Long Beach, CA. Brother
Donald joined in 1940 and joined him
after boot camp.
On Friday, December 5th, the
Lexington left Honolulu to take a load
of aircraft to Midway Island. They were
delivering those planes when they were
informed the Japanese were bombing
Pearl Harbor. When they returned to
Pearl, depth charges were dropped
ahead of them in case a Japanese
submarine might be in the area.
The Lexington had several skirmishes
at Bougainville and New Guinea, then
joined the carrier Yorktown for the
operation known as the Battle of the
Coral Sea, where the ship took two
torpedo and three bomb hits. After
correcting the damage as much as
possible, they were again underway and
could land planes on the flight deck.
The accumulation of aviation
gasoline vapors caused a terrific
explosion, and with the raging fires and
ammunition on aboard, the Lexington
began blowing up. Power in the engine
rooms was off, making it dark and
so hot the paint was melting on the
bulkheads. Escape was cut off when
they couldn’t open a dogged hatch, but
finally someone opened the hatch from
above. Donald was also able to make
it to the armor deck, both “looking like
drowning rats”.
After a short pause near the boiler air
intakes they decided to leave that area.
Another explosion followed from large
gas cylinders strapped to the bulkhead
above the cot where Orlyn had just
been resting.
Gaining the flight deck they realized
they had to abandon ship. Orlyn went
down a rope and was able to swim to a
nearby destroyer. Donald had to drop
15 feet onto a steel deck of the ship
causing lifelong back problems. There
were so many men on the destroyer that
there was standing room only.
The survivors were taken on two
different cruisers so the brothers
were not sure if the other was safe.
They watched he Lexington burn and
blow up, after being torpedoed so the
Japanese would not find them. The
men were taken to one of the Tonga
Tabu islands and were reunited before
being transported to San Diego.
Orlyn served on several other ships
until the end of the war, but the brothers
never again were allowed to sail on the
same ship.

Outlook Chapel Notes
Wyn Olson & Sheryl Fox
This year we will observe two special
days during the month of March, Saint
Patrick’s Day on Sunday, March 14 and
Palm Sunday on March 28.
First, we share with you the following
information on Saint Patrick. He was
born in Briton Roman parents in 390
A.D. His name at birth was Maewyn
Succot. At age sixteen he was captured
by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as
a slave. While serving as a shepherd
he learned the Irish language, became
a Christian and changed his name to
Patrick. After six years of slavery, he
escaped, walked 200 mile to the coast,
where he boarded a ship and sailed for
Briton. There he studied religion, and
entered the priesthood. He returned to
Ireland as a missionary in 432 A.D. He
was effective in leading the Irish people
to the Christian faith and helped establish
many monasteries and churches. The
famous St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin
was named in his honor.
Second, we share the record of Jesus
triumphal entry into Jerusalem on the
first Palm Sunday as recorded in John
12:12-16 (NKJV).
“The next day a great multitude that
had come to the feast, when they heard
that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
took branches of palm trees and
went out to meet Him, and cried out:
‘Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes
in the name of the LORD! The King
of Israel!’ Then Jesus, when He had
found a young donkey, sat on it; as it is
written: ‘Fear not, daughter of Zion;
Behold, your King is coming, Sitting
on a donkey’s colt.’ His disciples did
not understand these things at first;
but when Jesus was glorified, then they
remembered that these things were
written about Him and that they had
done these things to Him.”
The world celebrates St. Patrick’s
day, often without knowing who he
was, or what he did and sometimes in
a disgraceful manner. At the Village
THANK YOU
NOTES
To all who wished me well during my recent surgery
I would like to say a heartfelt thank you.
Rochelle McNeilly
My family and I want to thank all the wonderful people
in Sunland Village East who have given us emotional
support, food, beds for our children and grandchildren
and airport transportation during Jack’s last illness and
after his death on February 2. We are so fortunate to
have chosen to live here in SVE for all these years.
Harriet Rothwell and Family
Chapel we will observe St. Patrick’s Day
with the dignity it deserves and Palm
Sunday by focusing on Jesus as the King
of Kings and Lord of Lords. The people
were correct that first palm Sunday in
proclaiming Him the King of Israel, but
first He had to go to the cross and die for
the their sins and the sins of the whole
world. He will come again as the King
of Israel. This is predicted in Revelation
19:15-16. He Himself will rule them
with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the
winepress of the fierceness and wrath of
Almighty God. And He has on His robe
and on His thigh a name written: KING
OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
NKJV
The congregation of the Village
Chapel meets each Sunday at 9:00
a.m. in the SVE Auditorium. Join
with us on these special days and each
Sunday. Following the Worship Service
we always enjoy great Christian
Fellowship with complimentary coffee
and pastries.
Thanks
Maintenance Crew
and Voluteers!!
From the Activities Director
A very large thank you must be given to all the
volunteers who gave so freely of their time, talent and
energy to make the SVE 25th Anniversary Celebration
such a success.
The people of SVE, as always, quickly respond when
a call goes out for help. This is what makes our village
such a great placein which to live. Thanks, one and
all.
Also, a special shout out to the Maintenance Crew
who once again showed great teamwork and diligence
in setting up for the event; then, after working 11 hours,
tore it down and immediately set up for chapel.

ARCHITECTURAL
COMMITTEE
LarrySeegers
The Architectural Compliance Committee welcomes two
newly elected Board members that are now a part of the
ACC. Welcome Jeff Bowlds and Judy Abraham. Both BOD
members serve as co-chairpersons to the ACC as defined in
the SVE By-Laws.
The February BOD meeting falls later this month than the
due date dead line for Outlook articles, therefore, the subject
I will be discussing may or may not be BOD adopted or
approved, that being clarifications and minor changes to the
ACC guideline #27, SIGNS, (for sale, lease, political and
etc.)
The ACC is clarifying the Real Estate open house signage
displays. The guidelines prior to June 2008 revisions did not
permit any off premise open house signs. The intent to allow
the lead I open house signs was to assist SVE homeowners
who are trying to sell their homes. The ACC felt this was
for the good of the community and its residents. Previously
the guideline allowed only one sign, that being displayed on
the property offered for sale. It was that intended change
that lead in or off premise signs were to be placed in the
median or island portion of Farnsworth Drive only, however
was not worded correctly. This is the clarification the ACC is
proposing. This off premise signage will also apply to Estate
sales along with other restrictions.
Signs placed on city sidewalks or anywhere within the street
right of way are illegal whether within or at the entrances to
SVE per City of Mesa’s ordinances. Enforcement by the City
code enforcers is not a high priority item, therefore removal
by authorized persons within SVE does, and will take place.
The island portion of Farnsworth Drive are owned by our
HOA, and as such, are not a part of the street right of way.
A monetary fine policy is also
proposed to the BOD. If adopted,
will cover all illegal signs displayed
within SVE that violate the RCC&R
and ACC guidelines. Garage
signs are forbidden anywhere
including at or on your property,
except the two Community Board
approved garage sales in spring
and fall of each year. Signs that
are in violation within the Village
or at the entries to the Village will be
confiscated and held at the SVE Office
until such fine is paid.

From The President
Pat Chumbley
A BIG thank you to Lisa Titmas, our
maintenance staff and all the volunteers
who helped make our 25th birthday
celebration a huge success. Everyone
had a great time with the good music,
the history set-up in the Ocotillo Room,
the memory slide show and food. Even
though Mr. Farnsworth could not make
it, it was quite a party.
We welcome our new manager, Jim
Harrison, who has a strong background
in HOA experience. He comes to us
from the Anthem Community at Merrill
Ranch near Florence. We are sorry that
the last short term manager did not
work out, but the staff carried on very
well and none of your activities were
interrupted.
Thanks to David Roehrig for
trimming the cacti along the north
parking lot, and all the orange pickers,
too numerous to name. We appreciate
all your help with this big job!
SECURITY KORNER
Ed Malone
I have replaced Jim
Mayberry as your security
person on the HOA board. I
would like to thank Jim for
all of his work on our behalf
the past few years.
SVE is a great place to
live but we have to look out
for each other. Keep your
neighborhood Block Watch
active. I received info from
Mesa Police that a number of
our groups are not meeting
any longer. Please continue
to have meetings and send
in your reports. If you have
any questions call Terri Teten
at 480-644-3692 our Crime
Prevention Officer.
Scam alert—Be Aware--There are people who are
trying to steal your identity
and your cash via phone,
mail and email. Do Not
give anyone your credit card
number etc. if you don’t
know them or who they
represent.
Just a reminder. Don’t
leave any valuables on the
front seat of your car when
out and about. Just last week
a woman left her purse on the
front seat while returning her
cart and some one reached it
and grabbed it. Be Happy,
Be Safe, Be Careful.
We ask walkers along Farnsworth
Drive to please use sidewalks. With all
the bikers and golf carts, that designated
lane is too busy and dangerous for
walkers. Also, please leave the
handicapped parking slots open for
handicapped drivers. We have many
handicapped drivers who need them.
Thanks for your cooperation.
Enjoy your month and all the great
activities going on!
SVE ANNUAL
BRIDGE DINNER
The 20th annual SVE bridge party was a huge success with
72 players enjoying a delicious dinner catered by Michael’s
Fairway Grill.
Twenty four bridge hands later, the high scorers were Herb
Balk, Lucille Eldred, John Welker, Delores Hauge and Mary
Jean Crider.
Our thanks to Nancy Balk, party chairperson and emcee of
the event, Herb Balk, and Marlene and Dennis Augdahl who
are responsible for the pleasant evening.
IMPORTANT
When the assessment invoices and election materials
are mailed to every resident at the end of the each year,
they are sent to your SVE address unless you have notified
the office of a different address. It is important that you
receive this mailing. If your letter is returned, it will not
be sent out again. Your letter will be held in the office until
you pick it up. Depending on when you pick it up, you
may have to pay a penalty on your assessment.
It is YOUR responsibility to see that the office has a
correct mailing address.

Sunland Village East Association Board Of Directors’ Meeting
February 11, 2010
Auditorium
Open Session 9:30 a.m.
-President Pat Chumbley
began the meeting by
introducing the new Board
Members, Judy Abraham,
Jeff Bowlds and Ed Malone.
-We have hired another
manager with extensive
HOA
experience
with
excellent references. He will
begin in late February.
Board
of
Directors’
Meeting 10:07 a.m.
Board members present:
Pat Chumbley, President; Jim
Mayberry, Vice President;
Gene Trust, Secretary;
Richard Hicks, Treasurer; Ed
Malone, Security; and Jeff
Bowlds and Judy Abraham,
ACC, were present. All
stood for the Pledge of
Allegiance.
The minutes of the
January, 2010, meeting were
approved with the following
amendment:
Ken Scarborough joined
the
By-Laws
Review
Committee on January 22. His
membership was approved
by the Board on January 18
by email consensus.
2009. Twenty three (23)
Architectural Requests were
received. All were approved.
Treasurer’s
Report.
Richard Hicks. The January
report shows that we are
$5,382 below our budget for
the year. We had unexpected
cost due to Storm Damage
during January. We have
difficulty getting appreciable
interest on short term
investments because of the
economic climate. During
January we terminated our
contract with a firm which
processes our payroll and
provided heath insurance for
our employees. We expect to
save considerable expense
by payroll in-house and
switch to a broker to obtain
better insurance. His report
will be filed and posted on
the Bulletin Board.
Community
Patrol
Report.
Ed Malone.
Several
block
watches
have not reported their two
meetings or do not have
captains. Members were
encouraged to maintain
their block watches. Open
garage doors continue to be
a problem. We are receptive
to telephone scams, so they
should be vigilant and look
out for their neighbors.
Architectural
Report.
Jeff Bowlds. There have
been 9 title transfers of
homes and condos during
January 2010. Sales have
been consistent with January
Management
Report.
Pat Chumbley.
-The Board have met
in an open study session
concerning the prioritization
projects for 2010. The
ranking of projects are as
follows:
1. Correct plumbing of
North pools and install drains
to conform to the federal
Virginia Graeme Baker Pool
and Spa Safety Act, intended
to eliminate entrapment
accidents at drain in pools and
spas. Adequate notice will be
given for pool closures.
2. Install a concrete
overlay and flooring to form
a dam, thereby eliminating
water flooding into the North
Complex weight room and
creating a health issue.
3. Raise the Auditorium
stage.
4. Add lighting to the Palo
Verde parking lot. (Partially
paid for by the RV Club.)
5.
Correct
irrigation
problems.
6. Plan and construct a small
building for maintenance
storage.
7. Correct the sound system
in the Oakwood Room.
Other projects require
additional research.
-Roof-top air conditioning
units will be addressed by
the Architectural Control
Committee (ACC) although
no roof-top units are currently
proposed.
-Several Club financial
reports are overdue.
-Liability waivers are
available in the office. They
are required by our insurers

I am sitting on my patio writing this
but it is a bit cool. My flowers loved
all the rains and are happily blooming
away. I wonder where January went,
and where did 2009 go??
People are not breaking down boxes
as we have been asked to do when
we discard them in our dumpster.
Remember all the cardboard is accepted
with our newspaper recycling but it has
to be flattened before putting in with the
newspaper collection. We have big bins
by auditorium and they are emptied
with SVE getting the profit from this.
We have a super street with the very
best residents. We have two men who
are our heroes and there are more who
have been helping them with the new
project. It will help us as we will be
disposing of all glass, cans, plastic
bottles & containers, cardboard from
juice and milk. They are building a small
facility for this by the mail box. The
city has agreed to pick this up! Harold
and Jerry have been working very hard
and I hope they get some help. Just stop
by and see their work. Sandy Inman in
212 has been working tirelessly to get
this for our street. Thank you Sandy.
We are fortunate in having such good
people.
I met a new resident yesterday
(renter) Suzie #154 at our Saturday
coffee at Michael’s. Did you notice
new neighbors Jim and Gloria
Tollefshol #153?? We welcome all
the prospective homeowners as well as
permanent residents. We are very proud
of our street!!
Our annual Homeowners Meeting
will be held now February 18 when the
new board members will be elected.
In the next Outlook issue their names
will be published. Those running are
Vince Penny #169, Mario Rozzi #251
and Van Vandersloot #152. Phases I
and II painting will be voted on at this
meeting. The social committee has been
busy with planning the party this week.

I would like to take this time to invite
all who like to eat at Michaels and those
who enjoy golfing on our beautiful
course to join me on Sunday, March
21 here for a Pancreatic Cancer benefit.
I have arranged for speakers from
TGen, Scottsdale Healthcare hospital,
a survivor of Pancreatic cancer, our
own Health Coordinators and my son’s
family. My son was diagnosed with this
cruel sickness at Easter and was gone
from us by July. The doctor who treated
him is now with TGen and working
full time on this disease. I am selling
tickets hoping to give the research
much needed support. Opening
ceremonies will be at 10:30 A.M., golf
at 11:30 (4 party scramble) and dinner
at 4 P.M. Our own Mike Ahlfs and his
partner will provide the music. Many
thanks go out to the restaurant and the

recommended by the ACC.
Pat read the recommended

MOTION: Jeff moved that
the recommended revisions
be made. Gene seconded the
motion. Clarifications of the
proposal were given by Pat.
Jeff read an excerpt from the

conflict between them and
the proposal. Currently there
are at least six (6) Estate

We have a problem. Our

and must keep them for
their own collection. Please

“The
Illuminator” by Brenda R.
Vantrease. The novel takes
place in Oxford, England in
the late fourteenth century.
The author was inspired
to write the historical
novel when she saw the
first original illuminated
manuscript at Trinity College
in Dublin, and admired the
brilliant colors and exquisite
detail that survived since
the ninth century. At that
time, every book was copied
by hand, sponsored by the
Church. We have a copy
in our library and I highly
recommend reading this
wonderful story.

• Not a lot of special holidays this
month, but some really silly ones. On
the 1st is Nat’l Pig Day. Sure hope you
didn’t miss it.
• During the following weeks come
Frozen Food Day, Crown Roast of Pork
Day, and Clam on the Half Shell Day.
Nat’l Goof Off Day is the 22nd, which I
will observe with great enjoyment.
• About 8,000 people a year

make it a matter of medical record. The
list of places into which you are not
supposed to poke toothpicks is lengthy.

gayle silberman
Over the past seven years
I have worked with many
older adults.
I hear the
following a great deal … “I
would love to take (fill in the
blank) class or exercises, but
if I get down on the floor,
I can’t get back up.” My
response to that statement
is “ if you fall and are alone,
how will you get back up?”
Current estimates suggest
that every year one out of
three people over 65 will
fall. As changes to the
body, eyes and ears happen
with age, the risk for taking
a fall increases. Many
times, as we get older, we
become less active. This
leads to de-conditioning of
the muscles and a loss of
flexibility, both of which
can also increase the risk of
a fall. Unfortunately, when
people fall, they tend to
panic. They may not have
been on the floor for years
or even decades, and they
lose the ability to get back
up. Many times people
try to get up in a way that
makes it harder and they
become stuck on the floor
until help arrives.
Below
are
simple
instructions on how to get
up once you are down on
the floor. When you first
practice these steps, have
someone with you so you
feel more comfortable. To
begin, have a chair close by.
Step 1.
On the floor,
crawl or scoot yourself over
to something sturdy (the
chair). The safest and easiest
way to get up is to hold
onto something for balance.
Step 2. Get onto all fourshands and knees. Then bring
one foot forward-whichever
leg feels stronger to you.
You should be stepping on
one foot and the other knee
is on the floor in a halfkneeling position. Have
your hands on the chair to
support you and maintain
your balance.
Step 3. From here use
your arms and your foot to
push yourself up to a lunge
position. While still holding
on bring both feet together
and stand up straight.
Step 4. Practice getting up
and down from the floor at
least once per week. Don’t
wait until you fall to try to
figure out how to get up. If
you stay in practice, you
will be surprised at how
easily you can get yourself
up.
For those who have had
knee replacements and/or
other surgeries, ask your
tristate refrige
doctor for instructions on
the best way for you to get
up, should you fall. When
I had my hip replacement,
I had my surgeon show me
how to get up off the floor.
Then I felt much safer and
secure knowing I could
get up, should I take a fall.
Simply knowing how to
recover from a fall reduces
anxiety and stress.
To help prevent falls,
practice balancing exercises,
and increase your strength
and flexibility with a healthy
exercise program.

BOOK CLUB
Dorothy Daly
In January the SVE book club reviewed the novel The
Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie by Shaffer and
Barrows, and this month we reviewed Five Quarters of the
Orange by Joanne Harris. Two stories of World War II,
different allied countries – England and France – and two
different scenarios. Joanne Harris’ book is the darker story,
with the French resistance movement, black marketers,
collaboration with the enemy, neighbor uneasy
with neighbor; and throughout, the story
of a young daughters ongoing conflict
with her mother and her infatuation with a
Nazi soldier. The scent of oranges brings
on the mother’s migraines. The
younger daughter, Framboise,
uses this information to
incapacitate her mother
which leaves herself, her
older sister Reine and
her brother Cassis free to
roam the countryside.
Next
month,
on
Tuesday, March 2, we
will review Three Cups of
Tea by Greg Mortenson.

Rick will continue his presentation

Spring is around the corner so it would be a good time to come and see
what the SVE Woodcarvers are carving on their projects. Woodcarvers
meet on Tuesdays from 12:30 till 4 pm in the Arts and Crafts Room.
On January 29th there were ten members that participated in the
Superstition Sunrise RV Resort woodcarving show in Apache Junction.
The show had many beautiful woodcarvings, and was enjoyed by the
SVE Woodcarvers.
On February 20 & 21st some of the members of the SVE Woodcarvers
will be attending the 21st Desert Woodcarvers Show in Mesa. Some
outstanding woodcarvings are displayed there, so it is a great opportunity
to get some new ideas, etc.
All the woodcarvers would like to see you come and join them, and
we are willing to show you how to do a project. The coffee pot is on!

better weather up North beckons you
Snowbirds. At times it is difficult to
find workbench space.
One thing that makes the Wood
Shop such a successful venture is
our Monitors. There are more than
twenty residents who monitor in
the Wood Shop. They are there to
promote safety and help craftsmen
use the machinery. We are all
appreciative of the Monitors and
Bob Putz, the Head Monitor.
The Wood Shop Craftsman of the
Month is Les Warren. Les built and
finished a lectern for the auditorium.
You can see the precision and
skillfulness of his craftsmanship in
the accompanying picture.
If you would like to receive Wood Shop emails send an email to
earleburd@cox.net asking to be put on the mailing list.
The Dazzling Desert Dolls Red Hat Society
Patricia Scarboro
The Dazzling Desert
Dolls Red Hat Society
at SVE was started
in 2002 by Gladys Cooke.
Before
entering
the
Mesa Verde Room, for
that first
gathering, she
hoped twenty or thirty
ladies would come together
“just for the heck of it”. To
her surprise over eighty
ladies showed up! Being
2/28/10
nominated
as
the
Queen Mum was more
of a surprise. During
her reign,
the
group
became everything
she
hoped for-- high-spirited,
fun, frolicking ladies.
Gladys moved to New
York last spring after the
death of her husband,
Bud. She often wrote
to me saying she is still
treated like a Queen
by her loving family,
but misses her Red Hat
friends.
In
December
our
chapter purchased a brick
in her honor. I had the
pleasure to give her this
news and to hear her
joy and thanks for our
kindness.
Suddenly, on January
2/28/10
5th, 2010, Gladys left
us again.
With
her
passing, I believe, on the
other side of the Pearly
Gates she’s probably
still being treated like
a Queen. At the RHS
February tea in the MVR,
where all the fun began in
2002, a tribute was made
by our chapter to this
wonderful lady.

March 2010
RED HAT SOCIETY
Ruth Weston
Red Hat Chapter forming. Can we talk
ladies? If the answer is “yes”, dig out
that old/new purple dress and red hat
and join the most unorganized
club you’ll ever encounter.
There are no dues, no
agendas, just joining other
women for tea, lunch,
shows, etc. Inspired by a
Jenny Jones poem, “ when
I am an old woman…I shall
wear purple/with a red hat
that doesn’t go and doesn’t suit
me”, women all over the world
and country are forming Red Hat
Societies. The only formal rule of the “disorganization is that
when we have a ladies day out, usually once a month, we must
dress alike in the club’s color scheme of purple/red. Please sign
up in the Activities Center if you’re ready for some fun. This
notice was printed in the Outlook, probably in 2002 by Gladys
Cooke. Some information has changed such as dues, agenda
and organization but Gladys inspired many ladies, and our
club now has close to 100 members with Gladys being the first
“Queen Mum” of the Red Hat Society of Sunland Village East.
We lost this wonderful lady on January 5, 2010 but we will never
forget her. A brick has been purchased in honor and memory of
Gladys and will be placed on the Palo Verde building.
Group # 6 was hostess for our January tea and we thank
them for the delicious refreshments. Author Joanne Rendell,
daughter-in-law of member Jana Lewis was our guest
speaker. Joanne presented a book reading of her second
book “Crossing Washington Square” with Jana Lewis, Alan
Lewis, Ruth Weston, and Ken Scarborough participating in
speaking parts. Joanne also presented seven lucky women
with a copy of her book as door prizes.
We welcome any women in the village to join us on the
fourth Wednesday of the month at the Mesa Verde Room
at 9:30 a.m. Dress in purple and red. Bring a teacup and
teabag and expect to have a good time.
Sunland Stitchers
Ferne Cohen
All our stitchers have been very busy with classes,
lectures and in general sewing for the Arts & Crafts fair
in March; and also of course, our Quilt Show at the same
time.
Vera Smith gave a wonderful 3 pocket tote class on
February 3rd. We all enjoyed this very much, and it was an
easy project to complete. Ginny Goodbar gave a lecture
class on Mon, Feb. 8th. The lecture was on various sewing
tips and also how to arrange your sewing room. Very
interesting. On Feb. 10th Lolly Platt gave a miniature quilt
class. On Feb. 15th Sue Thompson gave a Smart Bag class.
As you can see – February was a very busy month for our
stitchers. And of course, there are the gals doing charity
quilts during every Monday and Wednesday session. We
thank them all. We had a trunk show by Sharon Linder’s
on Feb. 22nd. This was very interesting as she is the gal
we bought the pattern from for our Mystery Quilt. Elaine
Ekdom made quilt kits for members to take home and
finish. They were given out at the Feb. 3rd. meeting.
We’re all anxious to see how they turn out.
On February 25th, anyone who worked on Banner
Hospital quilts or knit items were invited to a Tea given by
the hospital for their volunteers.
Please don’t forget the Arts & Crafts show in the
auditorium and the Sunland Stitchers Quilt show in the
Oakwood & Rosewood room on March 20th.

The shuffleboard players are happy these days. We have
a great new bunch of players who joined our group, making
it larger and more fun. We would like even more of you to

Our Sloppy Joe Luncheon was a success. We thank all
the villagers who came out and a special thanks goes to our

also league play, but there are a few
boards for open play, too. Hope

As the winter season comes to an end, I would like to
report that the Square and
Compass Club has once again had a successful year. We
had a good turnout for the Christmas and Valentine dinners,
with good food from Michael’s and great fellowship from
the members. The club would like to thank president Ed Zarr
and all the officers for a great season.
As our members return to their summer homes, we who
are in SVE all year round wish them a safe journey and a
healthy, happy summer, and we will be looking forward to
their return in the fall.
We are always looking for new members to the club, so if
you are new to SVE, or live here and just never got around to
joining, and if you are a mason in good standing with a lodge,
then we would invite you to call president Ed Zarr, at 480373-9955, secretary Max Traylor. 480-380-9404 or treasurer
Paul Christoffers, 480-358-1792 for more information about

SVE Active Singles meet every Wednesday at 6:30 pm in
the Mesa Verde Room. We invite all singles, both men and
women, to join us for an evening of cards and games. It’s a
great way to meet new friends.
February was a short month but Singles managed to have
a good time eating out at I’Hop and Organ Stop Pizza. We
also enjoyed an evening of one-act plays at Highland High
School.
Several of our Cub members were ill during the first two
months of the year. A card was sent letting them know we
were thinking of them. Please remember to call the Sunshine
Person, Margarete Shumway, 373-8954, if you know a Club
member who needs a card.

Busy, busy, everyone
is busy! Hard to believe
it is already March. The
Sunsationals are excited
about all our new dances
we are learning for the new
2011 Revue, “Broadway
Lights, Boogie Nights”.
The date has been chosen!
Mark your calendars, the
1st and the 5th of March
2011 will be the days to
remember. We are going
to try something new for
this Revue, an afternoon and
evening performance on the fifth. That means you have an
opportunity to see us perform three times! The head of our
Costume Committee, Linda Peterson, has some wonderful
ideas for costumes this year. It should be a great Revue!
A talented group of Sunsationals will be performing at
the Chandler Center for the Arts again. This Senior Variety
Show “Spice of Life” will be held an March 17th and 18th
in Chandler. These girls and one guy will represent our
community with their great dancing skills. Tickets are only

SVE Lapidary/

The Lapidary Shop has been exceptionally busy this
winter season. Some days there aren’t enough workbenches
available for everyone. We are training more members as
monitors so we can be open some afternoons. Plans are
underway for the Club to again serve food at the March 20th
Craft Fair. We need more volunteers to prepare and serve
food and sell tickets.
The main gem and mineral shows are over for the year and
those the club members were able to attend were outstanding
events. For the second year in a row we had to cancel our
trip to the big Quartzsite show because of rain. That’s the
only time of the year it seems to rain in Arizona.
Margie Ginnaty & Penny Pence held another successful
class on wire wrapping for six students shown in the picture
below. They learned the basic techniques for wrapping
precious metal wire around gemstones so the completed unit
can be used as a pendant. This technique can also be used to
make earrings, rings, and many other types of jewelry.
The shop is open each weekday morning from 8-11 AM. Visit
the shop and see what might “strike your fancy”. Out new window
cabinets have been installed and one has items for sale that have
been made by Club members and the other cabinet displays a
variety of gems and minerals and lapidary art objects.

Age-Defying Breakthrough Without A Facelift!
Destroy the Embarrassing, Frustrating Enemy Causing You
to Look Years Older. It’s Hidden Behind Those Chipped, Stained,
or Missing Teeth!
It’s true- your smile is telling the world you look older than you are. Revolutionary dental
advances in Cosmetic Dentistry and Dental Implants can now give you the opportunity to turn back
the hands of time and get back what was stolen from you — your youthful appearance!
Now it‘s possible to replace teeth with 90% of the force used to eat and smile with confidence
that you had when you were 18 years old. Do you know why a lot of people who can afford modern
dentistry don’t have it done? They feel it will take too long to get that “million dollar smile”.
We have discovered that the happiest dental patients are those that are serious about looking
great, feeling great, and they do what it takes to get their dental care done right.”
“How Do I Find Out What Dental Implants Can Do For Me?”
To receive a copy of the FREE report entitled: “9 Critical Secrets How You Can Turn Back
the Hands of Time, Smile Confidently and Chew Comfortably While Eating the Foods You
Love” call our 24 hour toll free recorded message hotline number at 888-566-3259 or go to the
website at, www.azsmiles.com and we’ll send you the report right away!
The call is free and so is the report!
