Use the actual benefit cost of personnel if known. Appendix C Types of Grants Grant Funding Sources Grant opportunities for the district will usually be from one of the following three sources: 1. Foundation Funding: Private foundations who have been established from donated funds, stock transfers or company profits. Grants from Foundations can range from $500 up and are usually made in a specific area of interest. (e.g. Books for Foster youth) These grants are not typically for ongoing support but for shorter focused periods. 2. State of California/ County of Sonoma: The State of California grants come from a variety of sources from pass through dollars from the federal government, voter designated program support or identified program need. Funds in this area can be more restrictive in their use than Foundation funds. 3. Federal Government: The Federal Government grants are an award of financial assistance from a federal agency to a recipient to carry out a public purpose of support or stimulation authorized by a law of the United States. Federal grants are not federal assistance or loans to individuals. In order to apply for any federal funding, you must be approved by the Districts Authorized Organization Representative (AOR), Debbie Weatherly in Accounting. Common Types of Grants Listed below are of the most common types of grants made to schools or nonprofit organizations and what they typically mean to the organization. Operating or General Support An operating grant provides support for the day-to-day costs of running the organization. Unrestricted An unrestricted grant allows for use of funds to support the organization where most needed. Project A project grant supports a specific activity. Seed A seed grant helps to jump-start a new organization, a new project or launch a capital campaign. Challenge or Matching A challenge or matching grant helps a nonprofit organization leverage additional dollars through a fundraising campaign. Challenge grants are done usually through the SRJC Foundation office. Please speak with them prior to applying for a Challenge Grant.
