Types of Grants
Grant Funding Sources
Grant opportunities for the district will usually be from one of the following three sources:
1. Foundation Funding:
Private foundations who have been established from donated funds, stock transfers or
company profits. Grants from Foundations can range from $500 up and are usually
made in a specific area of interest. (e.g. Books for Foster youth) These grants are not
typically for ongoing support but for shorter focused periods.
2. State of California/ County of Sonoma:
The State of California grants come from a variety of sources from pass through dollars
from the federal government, voter designated program support or identified program
need. Funds in this area can be more restrictive in their use than Foundation funds.
3. Federal Government:
The Federal Government grants are an award of financial assistance from a federal
agency to a recipient to carry out a public purpose of support or stimulation authorized
by a law of the United States. Federal grants are not federal assistance or loans to
individuals. In order to apply for any federal funding, you must be approved by the
Districts Authorized Organization Representative (AOR), Debbie Weatherly in
Accounting.
Common Types of Grants
Listed below are of the most common types of grants made to schools or nonprofit
organizations and what they typically mean to the organization.
Operating or General Support
An operating grant provides support for the day-to-day costs of running the organization.
Unrestricted
An unrestricted grant allows for use of funds to support the organization where most needed.
Project
A project grant supports a specific activity.
Seed
A seed grant helps to jump-start a new organization, a new project or launch a capital
campaign.
Challenge or Matching
A challenge or matching grant helps a nonprofit organization leverage additional dollars
through a fundraising campaign. Challenge grants are done usually through the SRJC
Foundation office. Please speak with them prior to applying for a Challenge Grant.
