Visit to BITS Pilani (25th – 29th March 2015) By Second Year Students Department of Information Technology VPCOE, Baramati REPORT Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Rajsthan organized APOGEE-2015 technical event during 25th to 29th March 2015. To attend the event we left from Baramati on 23rd March and reached Pilani on 24th March in the evening. We got temporary accommodation and settled down. The details are as follows. Registration and Inauguration DAY 1 Registration process for the event started at 11.00 AM in the morning. We all Registered for the APOGEE Event and Web Development Workshop. The details of the 5-Day Event schedule and rules are narrated by the volunteers. Visit to Birla Science Museum Visit to BITS Pilani We visited Birla Science Museum from 3.00 to 5.00PM. It gave students a great coverage in the area of science and environment. They have simulated different basic concepts in Science with excellent models. 2 3 Visit to BITS Pilani Inauguration We attended Inauguration at 6.00 PM. Inauguration included welcome song and lamp lightening followed by video presentation of the various events. 9.30PM to 10.30 PM: Sky watching using telescope. The campus itself is a unique historical telescope inbuilt. This brought us little knowledge about the astronomy. Highlights: Birla Museum and the Campus. Web Development Workshop DAY 2 10.00AM, Session 1, Day 1 Resource Person: Shubham Gupta Web Development Theory Session: In this Session, Shubham Gupta introduced various tools like DreamViewer, FileZilla, Wamp Server and Photoshop. It was more of an interactive session to learn the various tools that he introduced. 2.00PM, Session 2, Day1 Visit to BITS Pilani In this Session, there were practical sessions in designing sample Web Pages. He used Adobe Photoshop to design the web pages which was new experience. We also learnt about linking the designed Web pages to the local server. 4 7.00 PM, Expert Talk 1. Shoma Choudary, Former managing Editor Tehalka Tehelka is an Indian News Magazine known for its investigative journalism and sting operations in its beginning years. Shoma Choudary made all of us aware about the issues of Gujarat riot, West End and the problems faced by many fake victims. 2. Mr. Divya Narendra, Founder and CEO of SUMZERO. DAY 3 Visit to BITS Pilani He is an undergraduate in Applied Mathematics from Harvard University. He was in the team of Harvard Connect Project which is now known as a Facebook. He consistently emphasized on the importance of forming contacts in universities to raise money and work on business idea. He told the audience the importance of delving deep into entrepreneur ideas. 5 Web Development Workshop 10.00AM, Session 3, Day 2 On the previous day we learnt how to design the prototype of website using the tools. We got to learn how to use the open source servers and created sample free blogs. This session was more of designing the ideas to come up with small website. 02.00PM, Session 4, Day2 This session was quite interesting in a way of implementing the designed ideas. Our team is divided into 3 teams to make 3 different websites. This was the outcome of what we learnt in the previous 3 sessions. All the students enjoyed making their first website. All the sessions were concluded followed by Certificate distribution to all the participants. 7.00 PM, Expert Talk 1. Dr. Walter Lewin, Former Director MIT Media Labs This was the talk we all were waiting for to hear someone from MIT. He has a different view about developing projects. He demonstrated new tool that he invented. The tool did not look normal to us. It was different in the way it has features. By combining some various features we could develop own Paint like application. Workshop on Hacking DAY 4 Resource Person: Mr. Pushkar Satge The students who were interested in doing Workshop on Hacking participated in it. The workshop contained usage of hacking tools to hack the network. Demonstration of Metasploit tools on Back Track Open Source. 3.00PM to 5 PM: We attended the coding competition CodeStorm. CodeStorm is an on-campus event in which participants need to write code for a given set of problems. The event mainly focused on the ability of the participants to code problems as quick as they can. Visit to BITS Pilani 7.00PM to 8.30 PM 6 Expert Talk by Dr. Bindeshwar Patak, Founder of Sulabh Sanitation and Social Reform Movement The talk was on Toilets for all. He made the audience to think about the issues of sanitation and the problems faced by many Indians. He gave some statistics about Indian sanitation and it was shocking. He also gave some statistics about his work in the field of sanitation through the name Sulabh Sanitation. DAY 5 Events Visited: We visited various events and exhibitions ongoing in the campus. These included Photography, Art Gallery, Music Collection, Robots at War (RAW), Battle of Waterloo and Birla Temple. We left the Campus for Delhi on 29th March.
