Possible Essays:
What was Sam Houston’s strategy following the loss of the Alamo?
Many Texans were eager to attack Santa Anna’s army as soon as possible after the loss of the
Alamo and its men and the massacre at Goliad. But Houston knew that his army was too
small, too untrained, and too poorly supplied to defeat the Mexican force. So he undertook a
strategy of preparing his forces while retreating. He pulled back to a position north of San
Felipe de Austin, then trained his growing army while receiving supplies, including cannons
from the United States. He went on to win a tremendous victory when he attacked Santa
Anna at San Jacinto.
What were the differences between the pro-war delegates and the peace delegates to the Consultation?
Some Texans were ready to go to war with Mexico at once for the independence of Texas.
Others, some of them fearing the loss of Tejano support, preferred to demand that Santa
Anna return to the Constitution of 1824, allowing Texas to remain part of Mexico, and to
solve their differences short of war. The declaration the Consultation issued was a
compromise document.
