About this Survey

The Undergraduate First Destination Survey (formerly the Post-Graduation Survey) is assembled annually by the Career De velopment Center in an effort to provide accurate and useful information to students, faculty, staff and administration about the post-graduation activities of undergraduate alumni from the University of St. Thomas. We hope this information will be used to advise current and future students. The information in this report covers alumni who graduated from an undergraduate program during the 2013-2014 academic year (December 2013, May 2014 and July 2014). The survey was sent out to 1,384 alumni July through December 2014. Of these, 850 (61.42%) responded to the survey. An additional 124 first destination activities were collected via LinkedIn profiles or faculty for a 70.38% Knowledge Rate. This extra data is included in Employment, Continuing Education, and State of Residence listings but is not used for statisti cal representations of employment or graduate school activities. Where activity numbers and percentages are reported only those responding to the survey first-hand are included to maintain a statistically significant, unbiased, sampling. 166 graduates responding to the survey completed coursework for two or more majors. Those graduates have been included under each of their academic majors. These circumstances account for the total of 1,027 responses when individual majors are reported. This survey, as well as previous survey results may be found on the Career Development Center’s website at www.stthomas.edu/careerdevelopment/first-destinations

Understanding the Survey

Various options are available to students after graduation. Many seek Full-Time employment and some find Part Time work as they attend graduate school, navigate career paths, or explore options. Others volunteer, enlist in the military, or attend graduate school full-time. Employment, graduate school, and salary rates will differ depending upon major and career field of choice. These numbers as a whole tell only part of the story about what St. Thomas graduates are doing. Breakdowns by colleges and departments are available on pages 4-5 and 8-9. Organizations where graduates found employment are available starting on page 10. Graduate school listings are found on page 36. The best way to use this report is to examine information listed under individual colleges and departments you are interested in learning more about. By looking at each discipline separately you will be able to understand entry-level options, salaries, internship experience, and graduate school requirements unique to each career or vocational path.

Methodology

This data is reported in summary and released to the general public in both printed and electronic form. Participants are asked to fill out the online survey consisting of 15 questions or a paper version with the same employment and continuing education questions. Questions asked in the survey include: current employment status, sector of employ ment, organization of employment, title of position, approximate annual salary, graduate program enrollment and, if enrolled, field of study and location. Participants are also asked if and where they held an internship. Beginning in July of the survey year, subjects are identified by their graduation date. Those graduating the previous academic year (December, May and July) were surveyed. Our office made initial contact through email to one or more email addresses on file for the graduate. Those who do not respond received at least four email reminders followed by a post card and paper survey mailed to their last known home address in November. As an incentive to filling out the survey we held a drawing for several Amazon.com gift certificates. The first drawing oc curred in September for graduates completing the survey early. A second drawing of five Amazon.com gift certificates (one valued at $100, one valued at $50, and three valued at $25) was held in February and was open to all valid participants includ ing those who responded by September. Responses to the survey are confidential, handled by professional university staff, and stored in electronic format on a uni versity server with restricted access. This data will be kept in perpetuity so as to compare subsequent surveys. Survey data is always reported in aggregate form and individual survey responses are available only to limited staff within the Career Devel opment Center and Institutional Research and Analysis for additional aggregate reporting. Individual responses with personal identifying information are never singled out, released, or distributed within the university. Aggregate data representing the university as a whole (not individual responses) are reported to the Minnesota Private Col lege Research Foundation. All member career centers provide this data for state-wide reporting. During the process of mailing out surveys the Career Development Center received address update information from the United States Postal Service. These were given to the Development Office in order to update university records. Additional updated address information was given to Development with the participant’s consent. Survey responses are not given to the Development Office or any other university department. The Development Office is the university office responsible for keeping alumni contact information up to date.

Response Rate and Sample Size

The Career Development Center makes the best possible effort to contact the entire recent alumni population. Over the last several years the response rate has been between 45 and 51 percent, which is the national average for a survey conducted 6 to 8 months after graduation. In statistics, sampling methods are used to form an estimate of characteristics of the entire population. For the First Destina tion Survey, sampling naturally occurs when graduates respond to the survey. This sampling has been determined by the Ca reer Development Center to be unbiased and equally distributed among the population we attempted to contact. Those not counted were either not reachable or chose not to respond. In addition, the Career Development Center has found no evidence of employment status affecting the response rate or skewing the results. Over the last 15 years of data, while the response has fluctuated from a low of 21% to a high of 62%, the Career Development Center has not observed a correlation between the response and employment rates, either positive or negative. The Career Development Center presumes that if employment and salary affected whether or not graduates re turned the survey the response rate would be lower in years with low employment rates and high in years with high employ ment, or even the inverse (high response rate critical of low employment rates). Data Confidence

Through email, mail, and online surveys everyone contacted had an equal chance to participate with the incentive to be drawn for a gift certificate. Results are monitored as they come in. Once the survey hits 200 respondents (typically a 16% response rate) the overall per centages do not fluctuate more than 5% either way. Added responses, however, increase the confidence level to support sur vey results applicable to the greater population of the class. It should also be noted that departmental response rates also typ ically follow the overall response rate showing that disciplines are equally represented. For a population of 1,384 graduates (2014 survey population) a survey confidence level of 99% with a margin of error of +/ 3.1% can be achieved with a sample size of 770 (55.64% response rate). However, a confidence level of 95% is most used in political polls and other surveys. To achieve a 95% confidence level the 2014 survey required 581 out of 1,384 responses (41.98%). This year the survey achieved a confidence level of 99% with 850 responses (61.42%). With 99% confidence the survey reports that 93.88% of the 2013-2014 graduating class is situated (employed, enrolled in a graduate program, volunteer service, enlisted in the military, or not seeking employment) with a margin of error of +/ 1.32%. Knowledge Rates

Additional activities were collected via LinkedIn profiles or faculty. This extra data is included in Employment and Continu ing Education listings but is not used for statistical analysis. This additional, second-hand information when combined with the survey response rate is referred to as the “Knowledge Rate.” Where numbers and percentages are reported only those responding to the survey first-hand are included to keep the sampling un-biased. The table below shows the various methods, when they were executed, how many graduates received contact, and the re sponse rate of each method. The right-most column gives the percentage by which a particular method contributed to the total Knowledge Rate. For example, responses from email contributed to 74.85 percent of the overall Knowledge Rate.
