This year sees a record number of bands taking part, with over 300 entries. What a fabulous landmark to reach. It is with pleasure that we welcome visitors from both South Australia and Queensland, which join our many bands from regional NSW and Sydney in this fabulous celebration of music making. I warmly welcome Dr Peter Boonshaft from the USA as adjudicator for the Grainger and Lithgow events, and trust his comments will be of assistance to the MDs as they go about their role in developing the band programs in their schools. Peter will be joined by Dr Randy Navarre from the USA as well as leading Australian music educators, Steve Williams, Simon Thew, Gerald Steinmann and Gary Clark. The role of the adjudicator is such a vital one in a non-competitive and educational event such as this and I thank them for their contributions. It is with great delight that Sydney welcomed Dr John Lynch in 2014 as Associate Professor of Music and Artistic Director and Conductor Richard Gill of the Sydney Conservatorium’s Wind Symphony. This is a wonderful acknowledgment of the musical genre we celebrate here at the Festival and I look forward to seeing the contribution Dr Lynch can make to the musical life of our city in the coming years. I would like to take this opportunity to remind everybody that the SBF is listed on the Federal Government’s Register of Cultural Organisations (ROCO) as a tax deductible entity for any donation to the Trust Fund over $2.00. If there are any individuals or businesses in a position to take advantage of this SBF tax deductible status I would urge you to contact the General Manager, Pat Devery, to finalise your contribution. The SBF is a not-for-profit organisation which is administered and run entirely by volunteers from Bondi Brass, an Eastern-Suburbsbased community brass band. The SBF boasts the proud record of never having relied on government funding in its entire history, and yet it has continued to go from strength to strength. Once again I commend the many parents and school leadership teams who continue to support the musical education of their children. It is vital that we continue to educate our community leaders about the fundamental role music must play in a comprehensive education. With your continued support the SBF will continue to shine as an inspirational and inclusive event with education at its core. richard Gill OAM Patron Richard Gill’s memoir, Give Me Excess of It, was published in 2012 by Pan Macmillan 53RD ANNUAL NSW SCHOOL BAND FESTIVAL 3 sydney youth orchestras nurtures and inspires gifted young musicians to achieve artistic excellence and to provide the best possible orchestral training program, leading to the highest standard of performance. His father, John H. Grainger, was a well-known architect. Quite precocious at an early age, Grainger made his first concert tour when he was twelve. Soon afterwards he went to Germany with his mother to further his training as a pianist and composer. Between 1901 and 1914 Percy and his mother lived in London where his talents flourished. During this time Colonial Song and Mock Morris were published. In these years he befriended Edvard Grieg whose love of national music inspired Percy to look closely at English folk music. With the aid of a phonograph Grainger collected songs from folk-singers and made many famous arrangements from these. His friendship with many Scandinavian and English musical figures (Sandby, Delius, Scott, Balfour Gardner) developed during this period. In 1914 Grainger moved to America, where he lived for the rest of his life. He became an American citizen (although he always described himself as an Australian) and during a brief spell in the U.S. Army bands he ‘dished up’ (as he put it) the Country Gardens piece which many now equate with his name. ABODA An original musical thinker for his time, he did much to publicise medieval European music, and music of other cultures. Towards the end of his life he worked on means for producing ‘free music’ music not limited by time and pitch intervals. The machines he created in association with the scientist Burnett Cross may be regarded as the crude forerunners of the modern electronic synthesizers. Grainger’s best known works are Mock Morris (1911), Molly on the Shore – Irish reel (1921), Shepherd’s Hey (1922), Country Gardens (1925), Handel in the Strand ‘Clog Dance’ (1930). His compositions for wind band, notably Lincolnshire Posy, are regarded as being amongst the finest examples of the genre. Percy Grainger died in New York on 20 February 1961 and is now buried in the family grave in Adelaide, South Australia. Chris Blenkinsopp, Waverley College. 8 ABODA C OnD u CtOrs A wAr D The School Band Festival would like to acknowledge the continuing support of ABODA in developing the talents of our young Musical Directors. Once again ABODA will be donating two hand-crafted conductor’s batons. These will be awarded for the Percy Grainger and Alex Lithgow events. The recipients will be selected by the adjudicator. The award recognises the musical director who is judged to have prepared and presented the most challenging, professional and entertaining program. 53RD ANNUAL NSW SCHOOL BAND FESTIVAL Adjudicator Dr Peter Loel Boonshaft Called one of the most exciting and exhilarating voices in music education today, Dr Peter Loel Boonshaft has been invited to speak or conduct in every state in the nation and around the world. Not only is George Dreyfus one of Australia’s leading composers, he is also one of the most versatile. He played the bassoon in the Melbourne and Perth Symphony Orchestras for a number of years and, in 1977/78, presented a one-man show, ‘The George Dreyfus Show’, a humourous mixture of autobiographical and general comment with bassoon playing which he performed in Melbourne, Sydney and various country centres. In October 1983 he was Artist-in-Residence at the Conservatorium of Music in Tianjin, China, and the following year his autobiography The Last Frivolous Book was published. George Dreyfus’ involvement with brass bands began in the 1970s and his complete works for brass band were published in 1985 in England. Included among his compositions are a number of works for concert bands and wind ensembles, although he is probably better known for his theme music from the ABC television series Rush. He was invited to join the staff of the Conservatorium in 1948 where he became a teacher of Aural Training and later a Lecturer in Harmony and Composition, Counterpoint and Aesthetics of Music. Mr Hanson taught at the Conservatorium until 1962 and his students included many who were to become prominent composers, such as Nigel Butterley, Richard Meale and Barry Conyngham, and leading figures of the jazz world, such as Don Burrows. His composition Van Dieman’s Land (1972) is considered the first major work for the brass band by an Australian composer. It was premiered by Sydney Brass, conducted by John Hopkins, at a Sydney Symphony Orchestra Promenade concert to a packed Sydney Town Hall audience. Black Dyke Mills Band also performed the piece during the 1988 Bicentenary. The legendary German pianist, Walter Gieseking, touring Australia in the 1950s was asked to examine ‘blind’ a collection of anonymous scores by Australian composers and select five for broadcast. Four of the works selected were by Miriam Hyde (1913-2005) and one by Raymond Hanson. These recordings still exist in the National Library. Raymond Hanson is internationally recognised for his trumpet concerto recorded by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Joseph Post with soloist John Robertson. Equally at home in a small group or big band setting, his musical facility runs the entire spectrum from traditional jazz, swing, Bebop, R&B, Soul and commercial jazz rock. The eldest of the Morrison family, John has spent much of his musical life playing and recording with his younger brother James Morrison. At age 8, John began playing cornet in the school brass band and by the age of 10 had built his first drum set from pots and pans. In these early few years he played many different instruments and styles but jazz drumming was to be his calling. After living in New York for over 12 months in the late eighties, John and James returned home to form Australia's premier jazz big band, "The Morrison Bros Big Bad Band". John widened his exposure and experience also playing with a variety of other well-known artists including James Moody, Scott Hamilton, Richie Cole, John and Jeff Clayton, Garry Dial, Jimmy Whitherspoon, Eartha Kitt, Don Burrows, George Golla, and Bob Barnard, as well as fronting his own band Swing City. John is known for his work in the recording studio both as player and producer and hosts his own "Jazz at Five" radio show on Sydney radio station FM 99.3. Further to his playing schedule, John is a musical director for Pan Pacific and heads highly successful high school jazz music camps. John has been deeply involved in music education; his involvement with the Sydney Band Festival, as adjudicator (both in Sydney and the Dubbo regional competition) and in Band Festival workshops is testament to his belief that working with young people is vital. John is the Musical Director of the School Band Festival Honour Band which will be the feature guest band at the Frank Coughlan Event. John has been involved with the NSW School Band Festival for many years, and, as a token of the esteem in which he is held, this event has been named in his honour. He is a household name in Australia, renowned for his musicianship and his enthusiastic support for the jazz arts. He’s also highly respected internationally, where he’s toured numerous times to great acclaim annually since 1960. This superb multi-instrumentalist plays flute, clarinet and all the saxophones, from alto to baritone. He’s a composer and arranger of great note, and one of the world’s finest interpreters of the jazz tradition. This Living National Treasure (named in 1988 and ‘98) was the first Australian jazz artist to win a gold record, the first to play at Europe’s famed Montreux and the USA’s Newport festivals, the first to play in China, the first awarded a Creative Arts Fellowship, the first inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame, the first Director of a Jazz Studies course. He also found time to host his own television show, The Burrows Collection, for six years on ABC TV and has released close to forty albums. His 1995 Creative Arts Fellowship, under the auspices of which he tours schools, follows two earlier honours – an Order of Australia and an MBE – in recognition of his generous and unstinting work in promoting jazz. In 2000 the University of Sydney awarded Don Burrows ‘Doctor of Music’ [Honoris causa], and in 2001 he was awarded for the second time ‘Doctor of Music’ [Honoris causa] from the Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western Australia. His musicianship and his ability to communicate his passion for fine music have become legendary. He remains one of Australia’s pre-eminent artists, veritably a Living National Treasure. 16 53RD ANNUAL NSW SCHOOL BAND FESTIVAL Adjudicator Steve Williams Stephen Williams has established himself as one of Australia’s most versatile conductors, distinguishing himself with an impressive record of achievement in a variety of musical settings. In addition to conducting most of the Orchestras for Symphony Services International he has conducted, recorded and toured with many of Australia’s finest Symphonic Bands and Jazz Ensembles. He has directed and performed with Australian groups at the North Sea, Montreux, Edinburgh and Monterey Jazz Festivals, has conducted concerts in Carnegie Hall and taken Australian orchestras, symphonic bands and jazz ensembles to conferences in the U.S.A, Japan, Europe, the U.K, Singapore and China. In 1989 Stephen was awarded a conducting scholarship by Symphony Australia and for three years studied orchestral conducting under Werner Andreas Albert, during which time he conducted concerts and made recordings with many of the Symphony Australia Orchestras. In 1994 he was awarded the Harry Begian Conducting Scholarship, which enabled him to study advanced Symphonic Band conducting at the University of Illinois under Professor James Keene. In 1995 he was awarded a Master’s Degree in Orchestral Conducting and Research from the University of Queensland. Stephen is currently Chief Conductor Instrumental for The Arts Unit, a specialist unit in the N.S.W Department of Education & Communities, taking up this position at the beginning of 1999. He is the musical director for the NSW Schools Spectacular, the world’s biggest variety show and has been since 1991. He also is the founding Musical Director of the Northern Beaches Symphony Orchestra. The Lithgow family was noted for its musical talent and Alex’s father tutored him in the art of playing the cornet. At the very young age of 9 Alex made his first appearance as a soloist with the Invercargill Band. As well as playing brass instruments Alex became a competent violin player and, at the age of 17, was a member of the Invercargill Royal Theatre Orchestra. Over the course of the next decade Alex Lithgow competed with great distinction in a great number of New Zealand and Australian band competitions as both a soloist and conductor. In 1894 Alex Lithgow accepted an appointment as Bandleader of the St. Joseph’s Band in Launceston. Members of the St. Joseph’s Total Abstinence Society established the band in 1845. The band, which still meets and plays regularly, claims to be the oldest established band in Australia and the second oldest established band in the world. Lithgow held the position of Conductor of St. Joseph’s Band for 30 years, and at one time was Conductor of the Campbell Town Band in the Tasmanian Midlands. In addition to conducting, Lithgow was an inventive composer, and two of his works, Invercargill and Northern Queen, are still band staples. In the Launceston City Park band rotunda, the scene of many Lithgow-led performances, a plaque (pictured) has been erected to commemorate his services to Launceston. He was a tuba player in the ABC Military Band and was a well known arranger and orchestrator. He started composing film music in 1949 and received much help from American film composer, David Butolf. Films for which Wilbur Sampson wrote include: Smiley Gets a Gun, King of the Coral Sea and Dust in the Sun. We wrote all the music for the Walkabout television series which was screened in Britain and other countries. He also composed a song, Christmas Candles, which was a big hit in America after being recorded by the Andrews Sisters. Wilbur Sampson tragically died at age 44 of cancer, leaving his wife, Phyllis and 11 children. Later, record earnings from royalties, mainly from overseas, were a windfall to his deserving family. An indication of the esteem in which Sampson was held was the large crowd which attended the benefit concert given in the Cinesound Studios at Bondi Junction. Photo supplied by Wilbur Sampson’s daughter, Marie Hambleton, who currently resides in Qld. In her covering letter Marie wrote, ‘Dad was a particularly humble man who would be thrilled that he should be remembered in this way.’ The SBF is proud to keep alive the memory of another great Australian musician. 22 53RD ANNUAL NSW SCHOOL BAND FESTIVAL SUnDAY 27 jUlY the ROBERT McANALLY e v e n t (2nd division) Primary School concert band event Sir JohN claNcy aUditoriUM time: 11.00am Adjudicator: Dr Peter Loel Boonshaft reSUlt 1 Epping West Primary School Intermediate Band Mellinda Hole 2 Hornsby North Public School Intermediate Concert Band Lachlan Hamilton 3 Oatley West Pubilc School Intermediate Band Christian Brasche 4 Daceyville Senior Band Murray Jackson 5 St Augustine’s College Primary School Band Jennifer Power 6 Greenwich Public School Performing Band Tracey Foster 7 Turramurra Public School Intermediate Concert Band Tim Rowland 8 Middle Harbour Public School Senior Band Ray Hampton 9 Artarmon Junior Band 10 Clovelly Public School Intermediate Band 11 Leichhardt Public School Concert Band Murray Jackson Carlo Antonioli 53RD ANNUAL NSW SCHOOL BAND FESTIVAL 23 SUnDAY 27 jUlY the JOE COOK e v e n t (1st division) Primary School concert band event Sir JohN claNcy aUditoriUM time: 1.30pm Adjudicator: Dr Peter Loel Boonshaft reSUlt 1 Tacking Point Primary School Concert Band 2 Lindfield Public School Intermediate Band 3 Turramurra North Public School Senior Band 4 Oatley West Public School Concert Band Frank Rugers Tim Ferrier Ben Crocker Christian Brasche 5 Turramurra Public School Senior Concert Band Tim Rowland 6 Balgowlah Heights Public School Concert Band Ray Hampton 7 Clovelly Public School Senior Band 8 Beecroft Intermediate Band Murray Jackson Tim Ferrier 9 Artarmon Senior Band joe cook Joe Cook commenced his music making in 1961, learning the euphonium in St Marys, New South Wales and then studying trombone at the Canberra School of Music. McAnally was undoubtedly the most prolific Australian composer/ arranger of music for bands, particularly brass bands. His early musical career began with the Salvation Army, and he later became conductor of the New South Wales Tramways Band. He was one of the founders of the now defunct New South Wales Bandmasters’ Association based in Sydney. He wrote many difficult marches, including Implacable, Indomitable, The Spitfire, arranged Waltzing Matilda as a march, and composed a programmatic march for the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge in 1932 entitled Triumph of Industry. On a visit to London he was honoured to see the Massed Guards Band march down The Mall playing his march The Spitfire, which was inspired by the Spitfire pilots of the Second World War. When the ABC established its National Military Band in 1934 it was McAnally who auditioned the players from all over Australia and brought the band together for the arrival of Colonel H.E. Adkins – director of the famous Kneller Hall Military School of Music in England. McAnally spent most of his life in Sydney and died in Albury. During his extensive career Frank was to play in London with bandleaders Jack Hylton and Fred Elizalde and alongside such great musicians as Adrian Rollini, Fud Livingstone and Chelsea Quealey. Frank’s enduring legacy was to be appointed band leader for what was to become Sydney’s premier dance hall, the Trocodero, for twenty five years. Through the 1950s Frank was to nurture a young Don Burrows and share the billing with Graeme Bell’s Jazz Band. With a career that spanned from 1922 to 1971 he was undoubtedly one of the most influential musicians of his time and has been described by Graeme Bell as ‘the Father of Australian Jazz’. Bell speaks for the musicians of his generation when he states, ‘Apart from Louis Armstrong, I know of no other jazz musician whom I stood more in awe of than Frank Coughlan.’ The NSW School Band Festival is proud to acknowledge the role of such a celebrated Australian jazz pioneer and keep his legend alive by naming the Premier Big Band Event in his honour. 53RD ANNUAL NSW SCHOOL BAND FESTIVAL 57 Vale Ray Gallagher, often affectionately referred to as “Lofty” for his towering height, passed away in the early hours of Thursday 19 June, 2014. Ray devoted much of his life to the development of youth bands and young musicians. His most notable achievements included the establishment of the Mount Druitt District Band, Penrith Valley Concert Band, St Mary’s Brass Band and Penrith City Concert Band. York Public School Concert Band held a special place in Lofty’s heart. After starting the band 30 odd years ago he mentored and moulded many young musicians that attended the school. Many have followed in the footsteps of Lofty and are now, professional musicians, music teachers and conductors across Australia and the world. Several of his students travelled from far and wide to be with him in his final moments on Wednesday evening. It is a fitting testament to the strong influence he had on numerous young musicians across the Penrith District. During his final moments he shared in singing and humming songs of the past that he taught his students throughout the years. It was a moment for all of us to remember. Lofty began his musical life at the age of 8 under the tutelage of Harold Walmsely in the Bathurst Boys Band. He soon went onto competing in solo eisteddfods and the addiction was born. Lofty holds numerous State and National titles on Tuba and went on to being placed 4th in the 1978 World Instrumental Titles held in Britain. Several of Lofty’s students followed in his footsteps and have won State and National titles in their own right. Lofty spent many years performing in Military Bands and served his country in Malaysia and Vietnam. Lofty was first accepted into the Australian Army as a 17 year old. He found that the discipline of the military challenged him and caused him excel. He often told the story, if a musician could not play a certain passage he was sent to the guard house to practice for 4 hours or until he got it right. A message he frequently shared with his students. Under this treatment Lofty honed his skills and became a proficient performer. As an army bandmaster he learnt how to lead a band under difficult circumstances. While in the army band he was sent to Malaysia as a member of the Third Royal Australian Regiment. Lofty left the army for a short time in 1960 only to return the Eastern Command Band in 1964. During this time he served two tours of duty to Vietnam as a stretcher bearer and medic with the infantry. He attained the rank of Leading Musician NCO and left the military in 1970. In the 1980s, Lofty became heavily involved in the NSW Band Association. Lofty would often travel to country areas and deliver weekend workshops for the association. He became the foundation manager of the NSW Band Association’s Youth Band, leading them on 2 tours of New Zealand. The majority of the Youth Band members have continued their music, with many becoming professional musicians and conductors. Lofty started the York Public School Concert Band program in 1980 and over the next 13 years built it to be one of the best band programs in Australia. While at York, Lofty would organise workshops with world class conductors and musicians including Carl Hammond, Jack Brookshire, and numerous members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Lofty formed the Penrith Valley Concert Band in 1989 after he realised there was no real place for his York students to continue their music in the community. He lobbied council for funding and found rehearsal spaces and started the band building process again. Lofty’s tireless work was recognised by his local community, awarding him 1994 Penrith Citizen of the Year, 1997 Penrith Wall of Achievement Award, 1998 Order of Australia Medal and Centenary Medal, 2000 Member of NSW Band Association Band of the Century. Lofty worked closely with Cliff Goodchild to develop the school band movement in NSW. SBF Director, Don Shearman, said of Lofty, ‘I can think of no other person, besides Cliff, who was so influential in the school band movement’. Lofty will forever be in our memories and his commitment and dedication to his students will live on in his numerous students who have gone onto becoming professional musicians and musical educators. Monica was a great supporter of the Festival and the success of the event in the early days was due in no small part to her efforts in organising mailouts, processing entries, running the ticket office, coordinating the catering (Monnie’s egg sandwiches are still talked about by Festival regulars!) and generally keeping Cliff on track. Monica was also a great supporter of Bondi Brass (also founded by Cliff) and in recent years was a proud audience member when watching her grandson, Morley, as he made SBF debut in 2013. Monnie’s infectious enthusiasm and generosity of spirit will be missed by all of us.
