Welcome to the Education & Further Studies Fair series 36!
I am very happy that you made the decision to come to this fair. There are
representatives from institutions of higher learning and various education
providers here to help you with advice and information on courses of study
and places to go to after SPM. In addition to academic undergraduate courses,
there are also institutions present at the fair that offer specialised skills training
courses. Some universities and colleges offer scholarships for eligible students
so do ask about scholarships when you speak to them.
In this show directory, you will be able to find a complete list of all exhibitors
and the courses or services they offer. In addition, there are useful articles to
help you in your search for the right course and institution of higher learning,
and how to make the best use of your time at the fair. If you are interested in
specific areas of study, do attend the talks that have been specially arranged for
you. The talk schedule can be found on page 32.
I hope you will find what you are looking for in the fair and I wish you every
success in your studies in the future.
Thank you.

Choosing a course
I
While some students know for sure what they want to study,
many others require some help in choosing the right course.
Read on to find out how to begin your research on the right
course for you.
f you have just completed your SPM
and wish to pursue a university
education, you may want to consider
pre-university courses available. Popular
ones include Form 6, A-levels, foundation
courses, and Australian and Canadian
matriculation programmes among
others. Some students also choose to
go into American degree programmes
immediately after SPM.
8
It helps to know where you plan to study
upon completing your pre-university
course. If you want to study in public
universities, it is advisable to study Form
6 or the local matriculation programme.
Do check out the latest requirements for
specific public universities.
Foundation courses prepare students
for degree programmes offered by the
same university. There are several types
of foundation courses – there are general
ones like arts and science foundation that
allow you to go into a variety of arts- or
science-based courses; there are also
specific ones like business or engineering
foundation that prepare you specifically
for certain courses offered by the same
university.
If you want to study abroad, you
can consider the A-level (generally
accepted in the UK and other countries),
Australian and Canadian matriculation
programmes for Australian and Canadian
universities respectively, and the
American degree programmes if you
wish to transfer to a university in the US.
Colleges or universities that offer these
programmes would also provide support
for applications to universities in these
countries as well because applications
need to be made by the deadline in order
to get into the next academic year.
There are also options to study locally
after completing these pre-university
programmes as
they are accepted
by private colleges,
university colleges
and universities.
The fees for these
programmes range
widely depending
on the type of
institution (whether
public or private)
and duration.
At this point, it helps to know the general
direction of the course you wish to study
at university, whether it is arts-, scienceor engineering-based. This is because
some courses, particularly science- or
engineering-based courses, require you
to have studied certain subjects at preuniversity. Generally, arts-based courses
will accept students who have done
science subjects at pre-university, but
science- or engineering-based courses
will require students to have studied
science and math at pre-university. For
more competitive courses (like medicine),
you need above average results in your
pre-university course to get in.
If you already have a career in mind, you
can begin your research on the course
or courses that will lead you to this
career. For example, if you want to be
a lawyer, you can do an arts-based preuniversity course, or even a foundation
in law. Depending on the pre-university
programme you choose, you can then
apply to study law at a university that
accepts the pre-university qualification.
Besides the academic route, you can
also consider professional courses such
as accounting offered by professional
accounting bodies
directly or through
their providers.
This allows you to
earn professional
qualifications without
having to go to
university. There
are also institutions
that offer specific
skills training in
various areas such
as hair, make-up, beauty, grooming,
event planning, and other technical and
vocational subjects that prepare you
for work. These institutions may offer
certificate or diploma qualifications in
specific areas. Do check these out at
the fair.
Before we can make good decisions about
a course of study to pursue, we need
information on the options available for
further studies. Do spend the necessary
time and effort on finding the information
you need so that you will be happy with
your choice of a course.
9
Which college
or university?
With so many choices of
colleges and universities,
how does one choose?
Read on to find out how.
T
he institutions of higher learning in
Malaysia can generally be divided
into two major categories: public
and private.
Public institutions are mostly
government-funded and consist of
universities, community colleges,
polytechnics, and teacher training
institutes. Public universities accept the
Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM), the
local matriculation diploma conducted
at government matriculation colleges,
and selected diplomas from government
colleges as entry qualifications only. Some
public universities have their own entry
requirements so you need to check with
individual universities.
Private institutions consist of colleges that
offer overseas qualifications; university
colleges that offer overseas as well as
16
their own qualifications; and universities.
Private universities offer their own
undergraduate and postgraduate
qualifications. These include overseas
universities with local campuses,
such as The University of Nottingham
Malaysia Campus, Monash University
and Curtin University Sarawak Malaysia.
These institutions accept a variety of
pre-university qualifications (including
qualifications from independent Chinese
schools) and they also offer foundation
courses for students who wish to
continue with degree programmes after
that.
You can also consider colleges
and universities overseas. Popular
destinations include Australia, the UK and
the US. If you would like to know how
an institution ranks globally in terms of
teaching, research, knowledge transfer
and international outlook, visit http://
www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/worlduniversity-rankings/2012-13/worldranking/range/001-200. Use rankings
with caution as they do not provide
a complete picture of the university
and its student community. Generally,
universities that are ranked highly have
higher entry requirements and are more
difficult to get in. However, they also
want to attract the best students and
will therefore provide scholarships for
well-rounded students with outstanding
academic results.
If you wish to pursue
a professional career
(such as doctor,
lawyer, pharmacist
etc), you need to
ensure that the
course you pursue
is accredited and
recognised by
relevant professional
associations and regulatory bodies. This is
so that you can register with the relevant
regulatory bodies upon completion of
your course in order to practise
your profession.
Other considerations include facilities
offered including accommodation
for students from out of town or
overseas, location of the campus and
its environment, resources and support
provided to students, fees, student life
and faculty among others. Information on
these areas can usually be found on their
website so you can begin your research
there. Do talk to students who are
currently studying at the institution to get
an insider view of the institution. You can
speak to your seniors at school who have
gone to study there.
Different institutions provide students
with different experiences. Some
institutions have a vibrant student
community with lots of activities
organised by clubs and societies. If you
want to be involved in student activities
in addition to getting an academic
qualification, seek out
institutions that will
provide you with this
opportunity. Others
have close links with
employers where
close collaborations
take place at both
undergraduate
and postgraduate
research levels.
Reputation of the institution among
employers is also important because
you want to know if graduates from the
institution are able to secure jobs with big
employers. Therefore, when considering
an institution, do find out where their
graduates have gone and what their
graduates are doing. The career or
placement centre would be a good place
to direct your questions.
Ultimately, you want to land a good job
upon graduation or develop sufficient
network and resources to start your
own business.
