symphonystories News for Members and Friends of Symphony Space Linda Mastrodonato All Write! Spring 2009 All Write! students from the 1199SEIU Greater New York Education Fund program in New Jersey attend a writing workshop in a local community garden. Freedom through Literacy “You must keep writing. It will keep you free.” —Sandra Cisneros, Born Bad. The 16th year of Symphony Space’s acclaimed All Write! program began on a cold, snowy morning this past January with a short story by Sandra Cisneros. The year’s crop of students gathered in the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre to hear award-winning writing by authors from around the world performed by Sydia Cedeño, Michael Genét, and B.D. Wong. The audience snapped photos and cheered wildly for the actors. But these avid listeners were not just there to be entertained. All Write!, modeled on Symphony Space’s popular Selected Shorts program, was founded in March 1993 to serve adult literacy students. All Write! is simple yet effective: participants from literacy programs around the City are invited to a special Selected Shorts performance. They see well-known stage, screen, and television actors performing short stories and poems. The students are then given the opportunity to submit their own writing to be read live from Symphony Space’s stage in the spring. Student submissions number in the hundreds every year, and dozens of short works are chosen to be read. We distribute a booklet of the chosen works to all students, and many teachers use extra copies as teaching tools in future classes. For Marie Chantalle Fils-Aime (see “Walking Bird” on this page), the Selected Shorts performance was a powerful catalyst. “When I first saw the show at Symphony Space, I was so excited. In my head, I thought I would try to write something so the actors could read it really well like they did the other pieces. I wrote ’Walking Bird‘ and I was surprised to be chosen to become part of the next show. When the actress read my poem from the stage, it was as though she had written it. I felt every word.” Like many All Write! students, Chantalle, as she is known, has a busy life outside class. A mother of two, she works as a Certified Nurse’s Aide. She finished high school in Haiti and joined her mother in the U.S. over ten years ago. Chantalle came to the All Write! program while working toward the goal of becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse. She encourages her classmates to take every opportunity to learn, and sets at least 30 minutes aside every day to read and to write. The more than 750 participants come from sixty-five literacy classes in programs around the City. All Write! is not only a significant educational tool for English language students, but it also fosters an atmosphere of understanding among New Yorkers in very different backgrounds who might not otherwise have much interaction. In any given year, All Write! participants represent several Latin American, African, Caribbean, European, and Asian immigrant groups. Through All Write!, students are empowered to reflect upon and write about their own lives and forge relationships across cultures. All Write! gives students like Chantalle the freedom to pursue further education and training, and enables them to experience the power of the written word that many native English speakers take for granted. The program has attracted a sincere and devoted following among Symphony Space members and donors. In 2008, an All Write! Endowment Fund was created with a substantial commitment from Symphony Space Board member Steven Aresty and his wife, Sheila (see profile below). With this generous gift, All Write! now has a strong foundation, which will help the program continue to serve thousands of New Yorkers in years to come. Symphony Space invites you to learn more about All Write! Under the “EDUCATION” button on our website (symphonyspace.org), click onto the All Write! page, where you’ll find links to more examples of student work and a short film about the program. You can also experience it first hand at the final performance of student work on Thursday, May 7 at 11:00 AM. Happy to see you pecking around like you used to do an energetic teacher bird Stay like this and be a comfort to others All Write! Program Spurs Endowment Gift Steven Aresty, President of Alfred Dunner Retail, is a longtime supporter of Symphony Space and a 25-year resident of the Upper West Side. Years ago, he enjoyed the numerous used book stores in the area and a small art cinema called the Thalia, where he spent Saturday afternoons taking in Fellini double features. In the years that followed, he became increasingly impressed with the role Symphony Space played in his community. “It provided a wide variety of cultural diversions and entertainment, and most importantly, it was always accessible. Ticket prices were low, and it was a friendly place.” In the aftermath of 9/11, when many families decided to move out of Manhattan, Steve and his wife, Sheila, decided to stay on the Upper West Side and raise a family here. “In doing so, we thought it was time to give back to our community. Naturally, we turned to our neighbor, Symphony Space, which was in the midst of a capital campaign, and made a modest contribution.” Pledging this support had a positive effect on Steve and Sheila, and they started attending more programs, everything from Selected Shorts to Just Kidding events—with their children Charlie and Eve—and of course, film. In 2003 Steve took the next step by joining the Symphony Space Board of Directors, and he has played a strong leadership role ever since, most recently as chair of the Board’s Marketing and Development Committee. Given his new role, Steve’s interest in our programming now extends beyond the performing arts to All Write!, Symphony Space’s adult literacy program. “I believe in the importance of education, and that literacy is a fundamental building block of personal advancement. All Write! is vital to these students. Again, with the intention of giving back to the community and helping others to move forward, we were proud to pledge our support to the program. Our gift will not only help serve students this year, but will help sustain the All Write! program in years to come.” For ways to support the All Write! program, please contact Waddy Thompson, Director of Development, at 212.864.1414 x230 or waddy.thompson@symphonyspace.org. Recounting just a few of the highlights illustrates this best: GRAMMY Award-nominated pianist Ursula Oppens celebrated the music of Elliott Carter with Mr. Carter in attendance; an adventurous performance by the multi-talented Meredith Monk was followed by three concerts by performers she has trained and influenced; acclaimed trumpeter Jon Faddis made his Symphony Space debut, and Arturo O’Farrill’s Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra and the American Symphony Orchestra both took up residence at Symphony Space with their own series. In addition, productions from the opera houses of Italy could be seen in both the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre and Leonard Nimoy Thalia in high definition digital video and surround sound. These were an instant hit with audiences. David Dorfman & Dan Froot FILM The film season presented 125 films in more than 300 screenings that encompassed festivals such as the Other Israel Film Festival, the African Diaspora Film Festival, and The New York International Children’s Film Festival; series such as Knight of Comedy, presenting the lighter side of actor Sir Alec Guinness; Dietrich and Garbo: Screen Goddesses; Writers in the Sun, which highlighted the extraordinary number of American novelists and playwrights who wrote for film; Best Films of 1978; and a Personal Choice collection by director John Sayles. LITERATURE Selected Shorts: A Celebration of the Short Story continued to be one of our most popular programs, which in addition to its audiences here and on tour now reaches nearly 320,000 listeners each week on 145 radio stations. We introduced podcasts, and subscribers quickly grew to more than 180,000. The season opened with “Stephen King presents The Best American Short Stories” with performers Joanna Gleason and Judith Ivey and continued to draw full houses with “John Lithgow & Friends:Tellers of Tales & Poets Aplenty” with John Lithgow and Bill Irwin and other exciting programs. The Thalia Book Club and Kids’ Book Club continued to sell out nearly every event with distinguished authors that included Claire Messud, Edwidge Danticat, Edmund Morris, Brian Jacques, and Ann M. Martin. And the literature season could not be complete without Bloomsday on Broadway, held every June 16 to celebrate James Joyce’s Ulysses. The marathon of live readings featured the previously unperformed (at Symphony Space) Ithaca section. The day concluded, as always, with Molly Bloom’s final affirmation performed by Fionnula Flanagan around 2 PM. DANCE The Dance Sampler: Women of the World presented four hours of dance by 16 female choreographers, all New York-based and of varying backgrounds. They included Alexandra Beller, Camille A. Brown, Roxane Butterfly, Caren Calder, Darrah Carr, Maureen Fleming, Regina Larkin, Cherylyn Lavagnino, Rajika Puri, and Bergen Wheeler. Thalia Dance featured three Dynamic Duos who coupled text and movement and proved that dance breaks boundaries of age, time, and form. Duos included David Dorfman & Dan Froot, Sara Pearson & Patrik Widrig, and Gus Solomons jr & Carmen de Lavallade. THEATRE Ric Kallaher Symphony Space presented its second Summer Stock on Broadway production with Surface to Air by David Epstein, directed by James Naughton and featuring Lois Smith and Larry Bryggman. This major production in the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre revisited the tragedy of Vietnam 30 years later through one family’s distress at the recovery of a beloved son’s remains. Theatre offerings continued on a considerably lighter note with The Thalia Follies: A Political Cabaret, evenings of timely songs and comedy planned, written, composed, and prepared in the days preceding each performance. The 2007/2008 Follies covered a wide range of topics including World Politics & the Presidential Race, Pre-Super Tuesday, Food Follies, God Follies, and Digital Follies. FAMILY Just Kidding continued to delight families and children of all ages with dance, music, storytelling, theater, and film programs that were smart, multi-cultural, and hip without being condescending to kids or their parents. There was a lively mix of family acts such as Elizabeth Mitchell, Ralph’s World, and the Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia with performers new to the series including the Ebony Hillbillies, The Sippy Cups, and the Beatles tribute band Bubble. The New York International Children’s Film Festival provided several screenings. The many sold-out performances attested to the popularity of this series. The extensive program is recognized by the New York State Department of Education as being one of the most successful curriculum-based arts programs in the state. 190 classes took part in the program this year, reaching 6,000 students in grades 2 through 12. We introduced a new Latin American Studies curriculum, which demonstrated the vibrant and complex Latin American cultures of today. Selected Shorts: All Write! invites adult literacy students to a special Selected Shorts performance and then gives them the opportunity to submit their own stories to be read live from Symphony Space’s stage. Ninety classes enrolled in this program, with more than 1,500 participants. All Write! students include New Yorkers from very different backgrounds, many learning English as a second language. Some of the best All Write! stories were included in regular Shorts programs and broadcast nationwide. Our many long-time members attended the dress rehearsal of Wall to Wall Bach, hearing the American Symphony Orchestra in the B-minor Mass. Producers Circle members enjoyed a musicale at a private home and receptions after several events. It takes a lot of dedicated people to fund all we do, and we appreciate the support and participation of every one of them. A list of members at the Family level and above follows this report. The 2008 Gala honored artists Carmen de Lavallade, John Lithgow, and Morgan Freeman. Particularly moving was B.D. Wong’s presentation to Lithgow in which he recounted how this veteran actor mentored him as his costar in his Broadway debut in M Butterfly. We also honored Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, which has provided many thousands of dollars in free legal assistance to Symphony Space over the years, including the precedent-setting legal action that secured ownership of our building. Symphony Space ended the 2007/2008 year with a balanced budget, thanks to the generosity of many, many people. Although ticket sales were strong all year, only 18% of income came from tickets because of our and some of the hottest Broadway tickets in town— including In the Heights! In keeping with the Broadway theme, all Gala table buyers will also receive reserved seating for Wall to Wall Broadway on Saturday, May 16, and an invitation to the dress rehearsal and private reception on Thursday, May 14 (see below for more on this year’s Wall to Wall marathon). ADMIN EXPENSES Management 20% Wall to Wall Programs 71% Fundraising 9% PERFORMANCE SUBSIDIES Symphony Space produces about half of the 600+ events that take place in its theatres. The others are created by a wide range of professional and community arts groups. A number of these groups cannot afford even the modest rental fee we charge, so we raise money to provide a subsidy for many of the events through our Performance Subsidy Program. Organizations are selected by the quality of their programs and the degree to which their programming complements other Symphony Space performances. Symphony Space will celebrate the Great White Way on Monday, April 6 at The Edison Ballroom (240 West 47th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue). The event is chaired by Symphony Space board member, writer and documentarian Jane Pollock and her husband Philip Berney, Principal at Kelso & Company. This year’s Gala honorees represent all the glamour, drama, and excitement of the Broadway world. Awards will be presented to Lin-Manuel Miranda, Tony Award®-winning composer, writer, and star of In the Heights; Brian Stokes Mitchell, Tony Award®-winning star of Man of La Mancha, Kiss Me Kate, and Ragtime, and President of The Actors Fund of America; Donna Murphy, Tony Award®winning star of Lovemusik, Passion, Wonderful Town, and The King and I; and the Rodgers Family Foundation, a long-time generous supporter of many New York cultural institutions, including Symphony Space. With performances and presentations by Sheldon Harnick, James Naughton, Kelli O’Hara, and other luminaries to be announced, the 2009 Gala is not to be missed! Along with a cocktail hour, dinner, and star-studded program, the Gala will include a silent auction featuring luxury items and one-of-a-kind collectibles. Donations to date include VIP tickets and a meet-and-greet with Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report; Daniel Swarovski eyewear; an all-access Equinox Fitness membership; Al Hirschfeld caricatures; Henry Leutwyler Our members clearly appreciate Symphony Space, as evidenced by many sold-out shows and the fact that twice as many of you contributed to our annual fund this year. It can’t be said enough that your support really does make a difference. For an overview of what we were able to do with your support in the 2007/2008 season, and for an update on Symphony Space funding and finances, please see the following Annual Report. We welcomed 2009 with a bang: many of you packed into both theatres for our free screening of the 2009 Presidential Inauguration—what a joy it was to share this historic event with you. That same week, Joyce Carol Oates joined us to host Selected Shorts, Phyllis Chen delighted her Thalia audience with pieces for toy (and full-size) pianos, and Mark O’Connor and Sharon Isbin premiered Strings and Threads, O’Connor’s piece for guitar and violin. Throughout February, The 1939 Project highlighted the extraordinary cultural output from that year with a festival of films, literary and musical performances, and discussions on the significance and influence of that time. We’ve got just as many not-to-bemissed shows coming up in the next couple of months—and with some of the lowest ticket prices in town, our shows are the best bet for the whole family! Dance a pirate jig with the buccaneer rock group Captain Bogg and Salty at their New York debut at Just Kidding on Saturday, March 28, and take part in some “April Foolery” at Selected Shorts on Wednesday, April 1. Spring also means dance season at Symphony Space. See the back of this newsletter for more exciting details! On April 6, Symphony Space will celebrate Broadway luminaries LinManuel Miranda, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Donna Murphy, and the Rodgers Family Foundation at our annual Gala at The Edison Ballroom. The Broadwaythemed Gala will include special performances by presenters and honorees and will surely get everyone in the mood for this year’s music marathon, Wall to Wall Broadway on May 16 (more on page 3). Finally, the more than 750 student participants of the All Write! adult literacy program are busy at work crafting stories and poems, some of which will be presented at the final performance in May. To read one of their poems and learn more about this remarkable program, see page 1. This edition of Symphony Stories highlights just a few of our outstanding programs. And thank you! with Wall to Wall Bach on May 17, 2008. More than 3,500 people came to hear the glorious music, which culminated with the B-minor Mass performed by the American Symphony Orchestra, just as it did in 1978. Nine-and-a-half of the 12½ hours were made available free to the world via live streaming on our website. COREY HAYES Symphony Space’s 30th anniversary season exemplified the high quality and diverse programming for which it is well known. The sunburst 30th anniversary logo was seen all over town as part of an extensive campaign to acquaint people with what we offer. Some 150,000 people attended the more than 600 events that took place during the year, and many hundreds of thousands more enjoyed Selected Shorts on the radio or through the new podcasts. The high point of the year was the soldout Symphony Space is 30: A Star-Studded Birthday Bash on January 10, 2008. It brought together some 80 celebrity guests in a love fest that transcended the footlights. Old friends and new came together in celebration of the artistic excellence that Symphony Space strives for every day. Excerpts from the Bash and interviews with several of the artists were used as the basis for “Symphony Space is 30,” a documentary film that recounted our history, celebrated our present, and looked forward to the future. To see the film, go to symphonyspace.org/about and click on the photo of Jerry Stiller, one of the memorable performers from the Bash who appears in the film. The day after the Birthday Bash, we launched Symphony Space Live, a new Internet-based music program that brings the excitement and vitality of live Symphony Space concerts to an international audience. It started out with only 12 programs but grew to more than 20 by the end of the year. You can listen to highlights from the now legendary Wall to Wall Sondheim, last year’s Wall to Wall Bach, and everything from Eastern European folk music to Elliott Carter and anything in between. Check it out at symphonyspace.org/live. To date, we’ve confirmed appearances by cast members from South Pacific, Hair, and The Lion King. There will be surprise guests throughout the day who will perform and talk about their personal Broadway experiences, which will make this a celebration like no other. If you’ve been to past Wall to Walls, you know you can’t predict just who you’ll get to see. Check out symphonyspace.org for updates as the day draws closer. The first Wall to Wall back in January 1978 established Symphony Space and Wall to Wall as neighborhood institutions and we are honored to be able to continue to present this annual “gift to the city” (New York Times) just when we can all use a healthy helping of Broadway magic. Our entire staff actually looks forward to working that 14-hour day every year, when we all come together to enjoy great music in a wonderful space among friends. We expect Wall to Wall Broadway to attract record crowds, but remember that members receive priority admission, so don’t let long lines discourage you from coming right in! Education 17% Theatre 14% Rentals & Other 15% Music 16% every-day low prices (seldom more than $30). The endowment contributed a substantial 23% of our income. With the recent downturn in the economy, this income will have to be made up from other sources going forward. A healthy 71 cents of every dollar that came in went directly for programs. Literature, education, and music programming (including Wall to Wall) consumed the largest shares of the budget. Symphony Space to most people means great performances and low ticket prices. To those who know us a little better, it means top flight education programs that serve some of the least fortunate citizens of our city. But to those of us who work at and serve on the Board of Symphony Space, it means a community of artists and audiences who come together to make magic together in a darkened theatre, nearly every day of the year. Thank you for being part of Symphony Space. Paul Gemignani On Saturday, May 16, Symphony Space will resound with the music of Broadway, featuring the music of classic composers such as Berlin, Bernstein, Gershwin, Loesser, Porter, Rodgers, Sondheim, and Weill (all of whom have been the subjects of past Wall to Walls of their own), as well as Elton John, Adam Guettel, Jerome Kern, Lerner and Loewe, Kander and Ebb, and many others. Dance is Afoot this Spring symphonyspace The snow is melting and soon it will be time for dancers to step, waltz, and tour jété through the doors and onto the Symphony Space stages. April is Dance Month at Symphony Space, and we’re thrilled to bring Keigwin Kabaret back to spice up the Thalia with a three-week Thursday through Saturday run (April 2 to 18). Join the always entertaining Murray Hill for “a ride in the skies” as he hosts the Kabaret with special guests including Bradford Scobie, the Launch Movement Experiment, and many others. The Keigwin Kabaret’s smart burlesque has been described as “glamour, sex, music, and dance” served up “with kinky élan” (The Village Voice). If you missed this naughty and nice company’s last visit in 2007, don’t let this opportunity to enjoy provocative and witty dance pass you by. And what does the phrase “Blues in the Night” mean to you? Color? Mood? Music? We asked twelve choreographers to answer that same question. Choreographer Nicole Wolcott, a Keigwin + Company co-founder, answers with her mesmerizing piece VERGE, a dark dream sequence for five dancers. To see this and other interpretations of the theme, stop by the 2009 Dance Sampler on Saturday, April 25. Each year, The Dance Sampler highlights the great talent of New York choreographers in a three-hour festival of dance, allowing fans to see a variety of work in one sitting.
