security Photo:www.takingtotheopenroad.com As armed robberies at malls around the country are on the rise, the Garden Route Mall in George has also stepped up their security to ensure the safety of all tenants and shoppers. Rion Olivier, Garden Route Mall centre manager, says they have always placed a great deal of importance on security. “We have an excellent working relationship with our local Conville Police, which has been ongoing for several years. In the past two months we have stepped up the frequency of our monthly meetings with senior officers, and officers visit the centre at unscheduled times on a daily basis. We would like to thank them for their conscientious efforts in this regard,” said Olivier. Olivier gave the assurance that they have a number of strict security measures in place and regularly re-evaluate their security protocols, thus making sure they are up to date with the latest and most relevant information. “Our closedcircuit television camera system was upgraded two years ago at substantial cost, and is fully operational. “We hold regular cluster meetings with different categories of tenants such as banks, jewellers and cellphone stores to discuss queries, concerns and security protocols. We also pass on any information and circulate safety and security tips to all our tenants that may be useful to rele- vant tenants to be on the look-out for pre-identified suspects.” He said in the event of a robbery, they advise employers not to try and stop thieves who are often armed and may become violent. “It is better for the police’s tactical unit and our armed response to attempt to arrest the armed thieves outside the mall’s boundaries.” Captain Malcolm Pojie, the Southern Cape Police spokesperson, said their Festive Season Security Strategy, which runs until 31 January, treats shopping centre safety as high priority. The Garden Route cluster commander, Major- General Thembikile Patekile would like to wish all Georgians and visitors to the Garden Route a safe festive season. He asked the public to abide by the law and to report any illegal activity to the nearest police station. See all the relevant emergency and police station contact numbers in the Holiday Guide index. Be prepared for every eventuality including theft, fire, lightning, power surges, or water damage. Here are some tips on how you can take care of your PC before the holidays: Very few of us nowadays do not have cameras on our cellphones or iPads, etc., so let’s start using them more constructively. Take clear pictures of all the important, precious items in your house, so you have a clear inventory for the insurers. This is so important because it is easy to miss something out until it is too late and you have submitted your claim. Make sure, when it comes to technical items, that the brand name is clearly visible. This one is essential. Each time you go to the mall or the beach or wherever, with your children, take a picture of them, obviously showing what they are wearing, so, if they get lost, or, heaven forbid, abducted, you can give the security, scanner. The biggest mistake that is made is forgetting to unplug the modem. If there is an electrical storm, it will almost always result in the modem blowing. Store your laptop in a safe place Keep it in a locked cupboard or somewhere else that is equally secure and non-visible. If you are taking your laptop with you, it is advisable to carry it in something other than a laptop bag so as not to draw too much attention to it. Some ideas include a briefcase, suitcase, tog bag, or backpack. Some companies even make laptop bags that look like big brown envelopes. Who knows, he might be just the crook the police are looking for. You may have to call in late to work because the washing machine has overflowed, or you have a flat tyre or a myriad other reasons. Take a photo of the disaster/dilemma, to prove to your boss that you are not just making an excuse to have a few extra hours snooze time! ënde e s e G tyd Fees 2. Stop all mail delivery services you may have such as newspaper delivery, as an obvious sign that you are not at home is when the mail is piled up at the door. 3. Ask a trusted neighbour or friend in the area to pop in to your home occasionally to empty the post box and make sure everything is still intact inside. “An even better option would be to ask someone to house-sit for you, but this is not always possible as many people go away during this period,” continues Kritzinger. 4. This one seems like a no-brainer but don’t tell too many people you’re going away and definitely don’t post it on social media. It’s also debatable whether it’s wise to tell your service providers such as the armed response company as there may have been instances in the past of inside jobs,” warns Kritzinger. 5. Test your alarm system before you go away to make sure all sensors work properly. Alarm systems degenerate with time and there may be a faulty connection or depleted battery with one or more of the sensors especially if it is an old system. “Best to know it is working 100% before you leave,” concludes Kritzinger. ecurity MSEC SEKURITEITSTELSELS (Source: www.all4women.co.za) ‘Take clear pictures of all the important, precious items in your house, so you have a clear inventory for the insurers. An unfortunate fact is that house break-ins are on the rise during the holidays when crooks can take advantage of the unlikely event of being disturbed as many homeowners are at their holiday destinations. CEO of Realtors International Durbanville Manja Kritzinger offers the top five tips to secure the home while families are away. “They may sound obvious but you would be surprised how many people don’t think about doing the basics to keep their home secure during the holidays,” comments Kritzinger. 1. Try to make your home appear as if someone is still living there while you are away. You can do this by automating your lights and sprinkler system to switch on at certain times of the day and night. This gives the illusion that someone is inside. “You can also download apps that allow you to access these functions as well as the alarm and camera systems in the home for extra piece of mind,” advises Kritzinger.
