WInter Carnival fireworks lit up the night sky at McCauley Mountain on Valentine's night last year. The light display capped off a frigid but busy event filled with ski jumping, royalty, races and a dance for sweethearts. This year's event will be just as packed with fun winter activities.
By BRITTANY GROW
Adirondack Express Staff
Ice castles, torch-light ski parades, fireworks and royalty are only a few things that make Winter Carnival a magical event every year. Normally taking place around
President's week, the carnival will be the first weekend in February this year, due to the growing popularity and how the already busy week President's week is for the town.
Various groups are responsible for the successful carnival every year including the Winter Carnival committee, the Town of Webb junior class, the C.A.A. and Polar
Bear Ski Club.
Being a family oriented event, there are activities for people of all ages. The junior class helps with a lot of the student participatory events such as the popular cardboard sled races, an event that many start preparing for months in advance.
There are even racers that come to the cardboard sled races as participants in the
Adirondack Cardboard Sled Race Circuit.
The Polar Bear Ski Club will have their hands full as they manage most of the activities that take place on the slopes such as the daredevil jumps and the torchlight ski parade.
Quite a bit goes into the planning of the
Winter Carnival every year and one task that is managed behind the scenes is the building of the majestic ice castle. A group of local men get together and exchange their ideas as to what they think the castle

Hans Schmid pushes his masterpiece red dragon cardboard sled up the hill at
McCauley. The cardboard sled races are a Winter Carnival favorite.
Carnival from page 6 should look like. However, the size and shape of the castle cannot be fully planned out until they see the mound of snow that is available for them to work with. A lot of hard work goes in to the making of the castle and it pays off every year with a work of art that lasts from the Tuesday before the Winter Carnival until the snow begins to melt.
Another highlight to the Winter Carnival is the unveiling of the king and queen. It is said to be a highly top secret process according to Steve Uzdavinis.
"When you see colored smoke coming from the chalet chimney at McCauley, that is the signal that a new king and queen have been elected," says Uzdavinis. Back when the Winer Carnival began, the royal couple was not always a couple, and they were not always local. For instance, the
King and Queen in 1952 was Heisman trophy winner Dick Kazmaier and Miss
Drum Major of America, Dottie Grover.
There were more out of town royalty in the years that followed, but that eventually gave way to electing members of the Old
Forge community to be the carnivals king and queen. The process of nominating the king and queen now typically steers towards a local couple, though they may also be individuals, who have contributed a great deal to the Old Forge winter sports and activities. It is an honor to be elected, because it is a way for the town to say thank you for all the hard work and dedication that has been put forth throughout the year and even years prior.
Some of the activities this year will stay true to form from years past, with a parade and ice skating party Friday night, skiing, the coronation of king and queen, dinner and dancing, torchlight ski parade, daredevil jumpers and fireworks Saturday night and ending with the winter sports challenge sponsored by Kiwanis,
Snowflake Derby, cardboard sled races and fat tire bike demonstration Sunday.
For a fun filled family time, kicking off
2016 in style, the Winter Carnival will be the place to go Feb. 5-7. We hope to see you and your cardboard sleds up at
McCauley Mountain.

A view from the top; there's a breathtaking vista at every turn atop McCauley.
By MEGAN ULRICH
Express News Staff
McCauley Mountain is a skier's treasure nestled in Old Forge. It's a small-town mountain with a family feel that offers all the excitement and amenities of bigger hills. With a new, upgraded snowmaking system and faster chair lift, McCauley is an exciting place to be for the 2015-16 ski season. The average natural snowfall is between 280 and 400 inches and the mountain boasts snowmaking on 65 percent of its trails, making it a destination for many New York skiers.
From the moment the first flakes fly, local kids are chomping at the bit to get on the mountain, and most of them know every detail of the trails at a young age.
The school bus delivers Town of Webb
School students each day, some of them high school racers, others Polar Bear racers and some just enjoying an afternoon of free-skiing.
They know the names of all the folks running the show; those at the front of the house and the ones behind the scenes.

Getting a lift ticket at McCauley is not the lengthy production that it can be at some larger mountains. In just a few minutes one of the staff will have your ticket or season pass and fill you in on the specials that are best for you and your family. There are full and half-day rates, season passes for alpine and cross country trails, and five day passes available. Crazy
Fridays offer $12 lift tickets and parents can ski with their kids for five bucks from
2-4:15 p.m., Monday through Thursday.
There are also group discounts available.
A McCauley Mountain season pass entitles skiers to reciprocal days at other area mountains, as well.
There are trails for every capability, from black diamonds for the advanced skier to the bunny slope for beginners. If it's your first time hitting the slopes, there are private and semi-private lessons available.
Learn all the basics of skiing and hop on the slopes with confidence.
After a day on the slopes there is a warm fire to toast chilly hands and the Last Run
Cafe offers adults a spot to enjoy an apres ski beverage. The kids will enjoy the picnic table set up and relaxed atmosphere in the chalet for lunch or a last afternoon snack or cup of cocoa. There's also free wifi available in the chalet.
Throughout the season there are special events at the mountain. There are opportunities for night skiing, plenty of chances to catch a ski race and evenings with live music. There are also annual events hosted by the mountain that are sure to be a good time.
The Winter Carnival, with its torchlight skiers and fireworks, St. Patrick's Day
Party and festivities, Mountainman-
McCauley Mountain Quest snowshoe race, Bill Koch youth races, Citizens
Downhill ski race weekend and much more.
It's a season of fun at McCauley
Mountain. For more information about special events, rates and hours visit mccauleyny.com or call (315) 369-3225.
See you on the hill!

Visitors are pleased with the eating establishments in the Central Adirondacks.
Recently, the readers of Snowmobiling magazine selected the Old Forge area as
having the best restaurants of any sledding hot-spot in the country. They said they
were impressed with the quality, variety, and value of the food and the fine service
they received. We think you will agree.

Winter Guide 2015-2016 35

John and Linda Sarkisian and Doug Smith, owners of Smith Marine in Old Forge.
By BRITTANY GROW
Adirondack Express Staff
As the cold weather sets in and snowfall lurks around the corner, the snowmobile dealers happily get their inventory ready for the eager riders that have been waiting since last snowmobile season to get on new sleds.
The crew at Smith Marine were buried behind a snowmobile mountain, as 300 sleds were delivered, 240 of which were pre-ordered, with another 60 expected to arrive at a later date. As the number one dealer east of the Mississippi with their spring presales beating out the competition across the country, Smith
Marine has been an award winning organization.
Doug Smith says Ski-doo listened to the wants and needs of the customers and made small changes in a lot of the sleds in their line. For instance, the four-stroke
1200 has been the same since 2009 so a complete rehaul was done, and the touring sled was given a more modern look. Slight changes in all of the snowmobiles will hopefully offer a better ride, nicer look, and overall better experience for the rider.
"We are looking forward to a great season. Even though we had all the

Snowmobiles from page 35 presale orders, we still don't have as many snowmobiles on hand to sell as we would like so we will be going out to get more," said Smith.
Over at Don't Polaris, Jamie Loson is also looking forward to a busy season. As one of the oldest, originally owned dealerships in the country, the Loson family has been selling Polaris snowmobiles since 1968. There are a handful of dealers that have been around as long as they have, but have since out the door like hot cakes, Martin says their Arctic Cats tend to go out the door a little faster than their Yamaha sleds due to the fact that there are more models to choose from with a large mix in types of sleds. Starting as small as their Kitty Cats for youth, Arctic Cat goes all the way up to the Turbo model, a popular model for those looking to win snowmobile races with a 180 horsepower engine. With a vast selection of snowmobiles to choose from, Big Moose Yamaha also has a large changed hands. The Loson's originated with Don, and the business is now passed down to Jamie.
As a master servicing dealership with over 40 years retail selection to go along with the snowmobile of your choice.
‘We are already very busy, so hopefully we will have another good winter, and that the of experience, one update Loson is trails will be in great condition. Also, we particularly happy about is the Axys hope everyone stays safe while riding.’ chassis that was very popular in the

OSON snowmobiles last year, and will continue to on in the 2016 models. Loson considers the sleds to be easy to handle and very reliable.
When asked what he looks forward to this season, Loson said, "We are already very busy, so hopefully we will have another good winter, and that the trails will be in great condition. Also, we hope everyone stays safe while riding."
Big Moose Yamaha and Arctic Cat owner Phil Martin also looks forward to snowfall so that riders can come up and enjoy the trails. Like the other dealers in
Old Forge, Martin says they had a great deal of sales during the preseason, with many of the interested buyers calling around the third week of July. Although
Martin also said they do the majority of their snowmobile sales from December
26 on, right in the midst of snowmobile season.
While the snowmobile's may be going
Martin says he considers Big Moose
Yamaha to be a clothing superstore based on their ten different clothing lines they carry with items starting as small as size two children and going up to adult 7xl.
Along with the vast sizes in clothing, Big
Moose Yamaha carries boots that go up to a size 17, and snowmobile helmets going as large as 5xl. One would think that a size 5xl wouldn't sell as frequently as the smaller sizes, but according to
Martin they sell approximately a dozen a year.
With so many different dealers in the
Town of Webb, it is a one stop shop for any and all snowmobiles and retail items you could possibly want. Snodeo is the perfect place to see what everyone has to offer and even take demo rides. It is also a great place to do some Christmas shopping and support the brands and dealers you know and love.
