The River Wyre connects the Forest of Bowland Hills with
Morecambe Bay, on the way it flows through a variety of
villages, landscapes and wildlife habitats. Our programme
is designed to help you enjoy the Wyre landscapes and get
involved in a variety of activities. We believe that everyone
can enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits of physical
activity in Wyre through taking part in this programme.

Partners
This programme of activities is produced with the help
and support of the following partners:
The programme also signposts you to country parks, parks,
natural areas, picnic sites, circular and long distance walks
and waterfront views.
Take part in cycle rides around Garstang, sailing on the
Wyre Estuary and beach sports on the Waterfront. Join the
trysport team and improve your sporting skills from football
to hockey to canoeing, try our weekly Walkin’ Wyre Health
Walks, monthly Legstretchers and Monday walks.
Why not go for a birdwatch on the Wyre and Ribble
Estuaries or walk into Wyre, Fylde and Blackpool’s
Countryside and visit Local Nature Reserves and beauty
spots. Visit our two theatres to enjoy tea dances and find out
about the cultural activities in the borough. Experience the
Garstang Walking Festival in May and the Fleetwood
Running Weekend in September and Festival Bowland
throughout the year.

• Be safe – plan ahead and follow any signs.
• Leave gates and property as you find them.
• Protect plants and animals, and take
your litter home.
• Keep dogs under close control.
• Consider other people.
• The seaside is a great place to visit but it can be
dangerous if you don’t take care while you are
there.
• Please leave things where you find them and
don’t take them home.
• Make sure you know the tide times and keep
checking so you don’t get cut off as the tide
comes in.
• Please keep your dog under control.
• Sand dunes are fragile.
• Stay healthy by washing hands after visting
the beach.
• Take your litter home and clear up after your dog.
• Do not enter the water unless you are trained
to do so.
• Local tide times are available from tourist
information centres.

GENERAL BOOKING INFORMATION
Many activities must be booked in advance as they can
only accommodate a limited number of people.
Reservations can be made through the contact details
given with each activity. Many activities are free but
some have small charges to cover cost. Please check
when booking.
Please note that Guided Walks Booking information is on
page 6 with the walking grades.
Group Bookings
Organised groups cannot be accommodated on these
activities. If your group would like a bespoke activity,
please contact the Countryside Team on 01253 887220
or the Leisure team on 01253 887379.
Poor Weather
Please note that a leader will be at the start of an
activity whatever the weather. In extreme conditions a
decision will be taken on the day by the leader and
group whether or not to cancel.
Meeting Points
Check pages 37, 38, and 39 for details of the meeting
points, each location has a reference number that is
given with the activity (eg. Churchtown 28). The
meeting point will be given at the time of booking.

Health
If you have any medical conditions that the activity
leader should know about, please mention this at the
start of the activity. You may be asked to complete a
simple health questionnaire at the start of some
activities. Or check with your GP or health practitioner
before you take part for information on the GP referral
programme in North Lancashire.

Safety
When attending an activity, please take the advice of the
leader/coach. We reserve the right to refuse to take
people on activities if we feel they are unsuitably
equipped for the activity. If you intend to leave early
please inform your leader/coach. For your own safety,
please come dressed to match the type of activity and
weather with appropriate footwear and waterproof
clothing.
Access for All Trampers and Wheels for All Bikes
For additional assistance or support on walks please

to make use of the Wheels for All adapted Bicycles and
explore the Waterfront at Fleetwood or arrange for use
of an all terrain motorised wheelchair based at Stanah,
the Tramper is specially designed to help you get around
over mud, stones, grass and rough ground.

Guided Walks Booking Infomation
The following information relates to all guided walk activities run by Wyre Coast and Countryside Service. There
are some activities in the programme that are run by our partners and for these activities alternative contact
details and booking arrangements are given.
Price Details
Most activities are priced at £3.00 for adults and £2.00 for children/concessions. However, some minibus trips,
specialists activities and workshops are priced between £2.00 and £15.00. Any bookable activity should be paid
for in advance. Reservations can be made through the Garstang Tourist Information Centre or as indicated in the
programme, one month in advance of the activity. At the time of booking, full details of the venue, route and
cost will be given. All tickets must be paid for in advance, no refunds will be given. Please make cheques payable
to Wyre Borough Council. Please send your remittance to Countryside Walks Bookings, Garstang Tourist

you decide if the walk is for you. For some of our longer walks
such as the Wilderness walks you will need to bring a packed
lunch with you.
Health Walks
These are up to one hour in duration and are on easy to use
walking routes they are designed for people who are wanting to improve
their health and well-being. Dogs are welcome on these walks with a lead.
(Hearing and seeing guide dogs are welcome on all walks).
Legstretchers
These are the next step up from the health walks and are designed
to help you get fit, stay fit and keep healthy. Dogs are welcome on
these walks with a lead. (Hearing and seeing guide dogs are welcome on
all walks). Up to 2 hours in duration.
Friday Freewheelers
Short walks up to 1 hour in duration with routes to enable families
with push chairs and prams, wheelchairs and trampers.
Festivals, Open Days
Days in our parks and visitor centres where visitors can experience
a programme of events and activities.

This activity is suitable for disabled people. Please ring to find out

Wheels for all Cycles
Activities to celebrate the landscape and wildlife of the Forest of
Bowland (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).
Conservation activities are for those people who want to have a go
at learning a skill such as tree-planting or who want to do their bit
to look after the local environment. Equipment and tuition will be
provided by the leader on the day. You may need to bring a packed
lunch and drink with you on this activity.
If you find it difficult to walk in the countryside why not hire a
Tramper, an all terrain electric vehicle which will take you where you
never thought possible.
This activity is suitable for people using wheels for all bicycles.

WYRE WAY CHALLENGE – DURING
GARSTANG WALKING FESTIVAL
Take up the challenge of this four day, local long distance
walk. The Wyre Way follows the course of the River Wyre
from the Irish Sea to its source in the Bowland Fells. The
walk starts from Knott End, on the edge of Morecambe
Bay and follows public footpaths around the Wyre Estuary,
then through the river’s lower reaches to Garstang. The
route then travels up through Scorton and Dolphinholme
into the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty.Why not join this 46 mile challenge, walk the
whole route for £35 or pay £10 per day.

The course covers basic sailing skills and is geared to both
adults and children and general runs over 2 successive
weekends. The club provides all the buoyancy aids,
waterproofs and helmets if needed. All instruction
complies with the Royal Yachting Association
requirements for “Approved Sail Training Schools” and
only uses trained instructors who are certified by the RYA

FOREST OF BOWLAND
The Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty (AONB). It is a nationally protected landscape
and internationally important for its heather moorland,
blanket bog and rare birds. The AONB is managed by a
partnership of landowners, farmers, voluntary
organisations, local councils and government agencies,
who work to protect, conserve and enhance the natural
and cultural heritage of this special area. For more

experience the Forest of Bowland AONB.
Brock

A picnic area and car park, set in the steep sided wooded
valley of the River Brock, providing access to riverside
and woodland walks. Good for woodland birdwatching.

A small hill near Scorton that gives good views of the
surrounding countryside. Crossed by a series of
footpaths and linked with Grizedale Valley. The moorland
and woodland on the hillside is rich in wildlife.

A bridlepath links the valley with Barnacre and Nether
Wyresdale through ancient woodlands and past
reservoirs.
Scorton Millennium Way
A level riverside path linking Cabus, Scorton and the
Wyre Way. Created and managed by the Scorton
Community.
Scorton Picnic Area
Enjoy a visit to villages such as Scorton, Caldervale and
Bleasdale which act as a gateway to the Forest of
Bowland. A Tramper is available for hire to help disabled
people explore local paths and routes in Bowland from

GARSTANG
Garstang Tourist Information Centre

Situated at the north end of Garstang adjacent to the
car park and the River Wyre. The Centre provides Tourist
Information, booking services, exhibition spaces/activity
room and a base for the Countryside Ranger Service.
The Centre is an ideal place to start a variety of
longer distance walks linking the Lancaster Canal,
Forest of Bowland, surrounding countryside and villages.
Garstang Millennium Green
and Riverside Trail

The Millennium Green is an area of Open Space
alongside the River Wyre owned and managed by the
Garstang Millennium Green Trust. The level surfaced
paths link into the Riverside Trail, a circular route from
the Discovery Centre and the Wyre Way.
Lancaster Canal
In Wyre the canal heads north from Bilsborrow passing
through Garstang to Forton, it provides a great place to
walk, to watch the canal boats cruising, fishermen
angling and enjoy the wildlife and scenery of this lively
waterway landscape.

Rossall Point Picnic Area
OVER WYRE & MORECAMBE BAY

This area of Wyre is adjacent to Morecambe Bay.
Morecambe Bay was formed by retreating glaciers which
deposited layers of sand and clay. As the sea rose the
low lying deposits were covered and the bay was formed.
It is the second largest bay in the UK. There are 310 km2
of inter-tidal sandflats and mudflats which are rich in
food for resident and migratory waders and wildfowl.
The Bay has been declared a Special Protection Area
(SPA) for the bird life and as a Special Area of
Conservation because of the marine habitat.
The scenery across the Bay to the Lake District and
the spectacular sunsets make it a very attractive area.
Lane Ends Picnic Area

The picnic area, owned by the Environment Agency,
offer excellent views of the Lake District and Morecambe
Bay. Good for birdwatching. Links into the Lancashire
coastal Way.
Knott-End to Fleetwood Ferry

The Ferry provides a vital link over the River Wyre
between the communities of Fleetwood and Knott-End.
Its a great place to start the 16 mile Wyre Estuary Way
or the 41 mile Wyre Way or enjoy a health walk starting
from Knott-End Café.
WYRE WATERFRONT AND TOWNS
This area lies to the west of the Wyre Estuary from
Fleetwood to Poulton-le-Fylde. There are miles of
waterfront to enjoy and many small pockets of open
space within this area. Places like Memorial Park, The
Towers and Pheasants Wood provide a valuable resource
for local people and wildlife.

Over 10 miles of easy to use promenade where people
can enjoy dramatic sea views over to Blackpool and to
the Lake District. Visitors can explore the seafront on
bike and on foot as well using the local tram and bus
services which help you get around the area.

Wyre Estuary Country Park

The Green Flag Award winning Country Park is situated
on the banks of the River Wyre in Thornton. A network
of level surfaced paths lead the visitor along estuarine
walks, providing an ideal place to study a variety of
habitats and wildlife. A bridlepath links the picnic areas
of Stanah, Cockle Hall and Skippool to the Wyreside
Visitor Centre. Circular routes can be created using local
footpaths, links with the Wyre Way. A Tramper is available
for hire from the Country Park.
Wyreside Visitor Centre
Situated next to the main car parking area at Stanah
Picnic Area, the Centre and Café provides a warm
welcome with light refreshments for taste and tourist
and visitor information for the Wyre Estuary Country
Park and the coast, you can also book your local theatre
events and activities here.
Riverside Room
Created with the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund,
this facility provides an ideal base for voluntary and
educational groups to explore the Wyre Estuary Country
park and its varied habitats. The building contains a
meeting room which is available for hire and is also a
base for the Country Park team , Countryside Ranger
service, volunteers and Walkin’ Wyre.
