Smoking
Smoking has been directly linked with cancers of the lung, mouth, throat, larynx,
oesophagus and bladder. In addition, smokers appear to have a higher risk of cancers of
the pancreas, kidney and stomach. Cigarette smoking is the most important self-inflicted
cause of illness and premature death in Western countries.
While most people are aware of the cancer risk from smoking, there are also many other
less well publicised smoking -related diseases. A smoker’s cough may progress to chronic
bronchitis and emphysema, causing breathlessness severe enough to stop someone
leading a normal lifestyle. Smokers also have a much greater chance of suffering from
angina, heart attacks or a stroke, or of needed an amputation because of blocked
circulation in one or more of their limbs.
It is generally never too late to benefit from giving up smoking. For example, the risk of
premature death from heart attack is almost halved within five years of quitting tobacco.
Nearly four out of every five smokers say that they would like to quit, however the fact that
only about one quarter of those who try, manage to give up demonstrates how powerfully
addictive the smoking habit is.
