AP Spanish is a full year course following similar guidelines for previous Spanish levels, but on
parallel to a college level course in Spanish Composition and Conversation. This course will be
conducted exclusively in Spanish and require daily conversation in Spanish from the students.
Students will develop skills to understand others and express themselves accurately, coherently
and fluently in formal and informal situations. Students will be able to read and understand
literary texts, various articles, films and television programs upon completing the course.
Course Objectives
-to review grammar extensively for linguistic accuracy
-to build students’ Spanish skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking
-to provide students with opportunities to integrate these skills
-to give students opportunities to develop these skills interpersonally, interpretively and
presentationally
-to expose students to a variety of authentic materials in Spanish: both audio and print sources

TEACHING STRATEGIES FOR INDIVIDUAL AND INTEGRATED SKILLS
Reading Skills: Students will be exposed to a variety of authentic texts in Spanish: short
stories, poetry, advertisements and newspaper or magazine articles from a variety of Spanishspeaking countries. Students will be able to analyze passages, identify and summarize main
points, answer questions and make appropriate inferences about the texts. To help students
integrate skills, students will write reactions to what they have read and share them with the class
orally. Should a literary reader text not be required, the teacher will provide the students with
copies of the literary selections.
Writing Skills: Students will have the opportunity to write in a variety of forms, styles and
registers, similar to what they might encounter on the AP exam. Informal writings will include
weekly journal entries and letters or emails to friends, teachers, and editors of a newspaper or
employers. Formal writing situations will include cohesive and coherent essays on a general
topic. Students will also have the opportunity to integrate reading, writing and listening skills
with prompts similar to those they will encounter on the AP exam.
Listening Skills: The class is conducted in Spanish and students are expected to use Spanish in
the classroom. In addition, students will listen to a variety of authentic audio sources from
different Spanish-speaking countries: news reports, conversations, interviews, songs, film,
video, lectures and listening comprehension activities. Students will have several opportunities
to integrate skills with listening selections. Students will be asked to write a reaction to the audio
piece. Students will be able to share with their classmates their opinions and interpretations of a
particular audio selection. Students will also read articles from magazines similar to the audio
selections and compare and contrast them orally in group discussions.
Speaking Skills: Students are expected to use only Spanish in the classroom. Students will have
several opportunities to speak using a variety of settings, discourse and registers. Some speaking
activities include: oral presentations on an article, skits, interviews, in-class discussions and
presentations, daily question and answer practice, paired or small group activities, debates and
simulated situations. Students will be given the opportunity to integrate reading, listening and
speaking skills with prompts similar to those found on the AP exam.
Exam Preparation: Throughout the year the students will be working in the AP Prep book
completing each section. Students will receive feedback on ways to improve their free response
samples. Before the actual exam, the students will take a practice exam and become familiar with
the format and recording equipment used on exam day.
