ROYAL TITLE FOR CBM COUNTRY REPRESENTATIVE
On 27th June 2011, The King of Surakarta in Central Java bestowed a
royal title to Dr. Andrew Mohanraj, CBM Country Representative for
Indonesia, in a special ceremony held at the Palace of Surakarta. The title
Kanjeng Raden Aryo (roughly translated as Royal Courtier of the Most
High) is a high ranking title, usually reserved for the nobility of the
Surakarta Royal Household, and was given to Dr Mohanraj in appreciation
of CBM’s long standing support to partners in that region. In the citation,
it was stated that the title was being awarded, “In appreciation of the
work done by Dr Andrew Mohanraj and his organisation in helping the
people of Java in their time of adversity”
CBM has been supporting community based rehabilitation work in the
central region of Java for more than two decades. Emergency related
support was given in the aftermath of the devastating Yogyakarta
earthquake in 2006 and again in 2010 after the eruption of Mount Merapi.
Despite being a Republic, Indonesia recognises several hereditary rulers
and aristocratic systems, the prominent ones being the Kingdoms of
Yogyakarta and Surakarta. Together with Yogyakarta, the Kingdom of
Surakarta is the heir to the Mataram Kingdom that was split into two
kingdoms in 1755. Before the nation of Indonesia was formed, Surakarta
was an autonomous kingdom ruled by the Sunan (Sultan or King). The
present King in Surakarta is HRH King Pakubuwono XIII.
