PASTOR’S REPORT Report of Rev. Jeffrey A. Swanson, Transitional Pastor Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:2 With these, or similar, words the Apostle Paul would greet those to whom a Letter was written. Many of these Letters are include in the New Testament. And many of you will recognize these words as the way I begin the Pastor’s Message each time we gather for Worship. Grace and Peace are not static greetings. Peace is a greeting not just for the moment but for the whole of human life. Peace is for the complete and total human for the entirety of human experience. It is a wonder-filled, wonderful, greeting for every moment of every day. In the same way, Grace is not a simple wish for the moment. Grace spoken to another is an invocation of Divine, holy blessing upon another for the whole of life. God alone is the Giver of real Grace – undeserved Love and Forgiveness. Nothing we can do, earn, merit of accomplish can cause Grace to be ours – it is completely a Gift from God. In this Annual Report, you will read about many activities in the gathering of people called St. John Lutheran. You will learn about and be reminded of many activities and accomplishments. These activities have been tools and opportunities for participants to come to know the Giver of Grace, the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The re-counting of these activities and opportunities reveal to us where we have been and where we are as a congregation of Lutherans in Sioux City, Iowa. It is good and important to know where one has been and where one is at in the moment. As a congregation, during this time of transition, together we will prayerfully and joyfully set about setting a course into the future. Transition is all about Mission possibilities and direction. We consider the question, “Here is where we are now, where would God have us go from here?” Whatever our decisions and the course we choose, we will need to keep in mind several truths. First, whatever is decided and chosen, there are no “winners” and no “losers.” Our life together, as the People of God, is not a matter of us vs. them, but of the whole Body of Christ seeking God’s Will and Direction in all we do – TOGETHER. And second, all participants at St. John are valued, cherished, vital to the moving forward of the mission and ministry God has called us to in this location. Just as your own body is made of many a various parts – all important – to the functioning of your body, so too, with the congregation as a part of the whole Body of Christ in the world. Each one of you is blessed and empowered by the Spirit of God with gifts and abilities to shape and direct our life together. We are bound to listen and have conversation together. 1 Together, we will be the voice of Grace and Peace to one another as we meet challenges and opportunities together. We will hold one another in Prayer through difficulties and in celebration. And we will live out the strong conviction that our gathering is more than habit, location, or “good coffee and treats”. We are the active, lively, dynamic Body of the Living God declaring “Good News of Great Joy” to the neighborhood and the community. I would like to extend a word of “Thanks” and “Profound Appreciation” to the Church Council and the Church Staff for excellent work and faithful service provided to the congregation this past year. So much happens “behind the scenes” in our ministry together – it is often these good and faithful servants hard at work, heeding God’s Call to service. Thank you! Also, Thank You to the members of St. John for your gracious and kind welcome, for your gracious gifts during the Christmas Season, and for your faithful support of our mission together in this location. Through your faithfulness we are able to give God glory through what we do together in ministry with children, youth, young adults, and senior adults. To each of you, I extend my personal thanks and gratitude for your generous gifts and faithful service. Grace and Peace to each of you, every day, always, in Jesus Christ! Pastor Jeffrey A. Thank you for sharing your time and talents in our congregation. As the year closes, I reflect back on some of the changes at St. John Lutheran Church. One of the most noteworthy changes was the retirement of Pastor Greg Hanneman after faithfully serving our congregation for nearly 12 years. We celebrated with Pastor Greg and Janelle after their last worship service on Reformation Sunday, October 25th. We were very sad to see them go, but are happy that they are closer to their family. Thankfully, with the focused efforts of the Congregation Council and the Western Iowa Synod, a Transitional Pastor was named within a very short timeframe. Pastor Jeffrey Swanson began in the office on November 16th and led his first worship service with us on November 22nd. Pastor Swanson will continue to serve as a part-time Pastor with New Life Lutheran Church in Sergeant Bluff and parttime with our congregation. We are grateful and happy to have him here at St. John Lutheran Church. The Council is continuing to work with the Western Iowa Synod office through the call committee process. Here are a few highlights from 2015: Reactivated Youth Group, under the direction of Youth Committee Chair, Paige Petersen Co-Hosted Voiced United! Workshop and Concert Bell Choir performed in Twelfth Night concert Gifted over $11,000 from Endowment fund Continued outreach ministry to local soup kitchen providing volunteers on a quarterly basis Donated over 370 kits, 64 quilts/blankets and almost 100 lbs. of soap to needy individuals and families through the Lutheran World Relief program and Global Health Ministries. Held 10th Annual Belgian Waffle Breakfast fundraiser, which netted over $2,500. Although looking back is important, looking forward is where we need to focus. There are many exciting things coming up as we move on to 2016 and I am excited to work alongside each and every one of you this next year! Together in Christ, Dale Erickson 4 EVANGELISM Thank you so much to all of the people who have served as greeters and ambassadors over the past year! You are very much appreciated… as are ALL of you who make our visitors and members feel welcome! I apologize for not having done more over the past few months as chair of this committee. I have several irons in the fire for 2016, however, and our committee will be working closely throughout the year with our Pastor Jeff, as well as Pastor Jeff Ungs (Director of Evangelical Mission for the Western Iowa Synod), and also the members of the Siouxland Table. Our goal is for Evangelism to be the underpinning of ALL our committees here at St. John. To this end, I plan on meeting and working with the other Chairs, periodically, to align our focus so we can assist each other with our projects and goals, meeting the needs of our congregation AND reaching out to the needs of our neighborhood and city. Evangelism NEEDS to be a strong pillar in the foundation of our congregation! Our committee will be working diligently in 2016 to provide our members with a variety of learning opportunities and avenues for outreach so EVERYONE can find a place to plug in and be involved! God is alive and God is relevant to our lives!! The Good News of the Gospel is why we exist as a church family… we ARE the Body of Christ, to each other and to the world! We are looking forward with hope and excitement! Respectfully Submitted, Chemine Mulford STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE I want to thank my great Committee again this year. The Stewardship Committee helped serve a Lenten dinner with the Men’s Group. In October and November the Committee also conducted the yearly Stewardship Campaign sending Faith Promise Cards and distributing Time and Talent Surveys. Under recommendation from the Planning Committee, we made it our goal to increase participation in the Stewardship Committee in 2014 for 2015: the result was a three-fold increase in returns for both documents. Participation in the 2015 Stewardship Campaign for 2016 was better yet. Respectfully Submitted, Stewardship Committee 5 CONGREGATIONAL LIFE The purpose of the Congregational Life Committee is to enhance the church life of St. John’s members by promoting events that bring the congregation together in a social setting. Members of the committee are Dale and Linda Erickson, Dick and Dana Herr, Terry Hudson, Rich and Judy Olson, Jeanette Tiede, Jayne and John Willer (chair). The Committee has organized several events this past year. These include a thank you coffee for Ethel Nichols for serving 33 years as Treasurer at St. John, the Annual Meeting potluck, Lenten suppers, Stone Park service and picnic, Pastor Hanneman farewell and retirement coffee, Thanksgiving dinner, and decorating the church for Christmas with new decorations. Thank you to all the many volunteers and the committee members who have helped this past year. Many people who are not officially members of this committee have contributed by assisting us. So many are always willing to help … clean up the kitchen, put up or take down decorations. Respectfully submitted, John Willer, chairperson EDUCATION COMMITTEE The Education Committee for 2015 consisted of Shari Salmon, Chairperson, Gale Horan, Brian Mulford, Heidi Hutton, Sharon Gauslow, Radine Wassell, Deb Gilson and Carol Hauser. Shari Salmon taught Sunday School with assistance from AmyHobson. Kelley Gilson directed the Sunday School Choir. There are six younger students actively involved in Sunday School: Elizabeth Salmon, Logan Salmon, Alex Hobson, Brody Hobson, Gregory Beals and Sophia Nelson. The Sunday School students participated in the Christmas program and sang at the December 27th worship service. Kelley Gilson directed. I would like to thank all the volunteers as well as the parents for their support of the Education Committee at St. John’s this past year. Respectfully submitted, Shari Salmon, Chairperson 6 BUSY WORKERS FOR MISSIONS Our group decided to change its name this year from Come and Sew to Busy Workers for Missions. We were hoping that someone who did not care about sewing would come and join us. Anyone is welcome to do the many things we do for missions and to have fellowship with others. Quilts can be pinned together and tied. Those desiring to sew can sew the quilts together. Others can help put kits together and can pack them in the boxes for Global Health Ministries and Lutheran World Relief. Those quilts and kits sent in November from St. John were: -60 Quilts -62 Baby Care Kits -16 Fabric Kits -71 Personal Care Kits -183 School Kits -93 pounds Soap -4 Blankets -30 Newborn Kits -10 Hospice Kits Thanks to everyone this year who worked on the quilts and kits, who helped bring supplies, who helped assembled the kits, and who helped delivered the boxes. Thanks to all of you for your generous participation in this wonderful mission of the church. Respectfully submitted, Rima Hartman SOCIAL MINISTRIES Thank you to committee members: Sharon Gauslow, Rima Hartman, Jeannette Tiede and Kristi Walz for your help this past year. This past year we continued our focus on helping the less fortunate in our community by collecting loose change each month and dividing the proceeds equally to the Gospel Mission, the Soup Kitchen and the Siouxland Foodbank Backpack program. The last few months of the year we modified our collection of this change to include our Sunday School kids in the collection and changed it form Spare Change Sunday to Noisy Change Sunday. The kids really seem to enjoy being a part of the process and the congregation has been very open to it as well as they seem to be very cheerful givers. In fact, when you compare receipts from the earlier part of the year to these past couple of months, you can see donations have significantly increased (i.e. approx. $40 to over $100 per month). Our committee decided to donate the change received in November, December and January to the Warming Shelter. Again, I cannot fail to mention the time and talents of many of our members committed to helping prepare and serve at the Soup Kitchen over the past year. Thank you to all for support in the form of prayers as well! In Christ’s Love, Linda Erickson, Chair 7 MEMORIAL COMMITTEE The Memorials Committee members include: Lynne McBride, Jim Dye, Arden Marquardt, Glenn Ivarsen, Judy Nelson, Judy Olson, Pastor Hanneman and Dana Herr. With heavy hearts, we mourn the loss of Lynne McBride and treasure her commitment to this committee. Please refer to the Treasurer Report/Memorial Fund for specific details regarding funds received and disbursed during 2015. Each memorial gift is acknowledged with a hand written thank you. We would like to thank all who provided gifts to the Memorial Committee throughout the year. The committee meets on a quarterly basis each year. We encourage recommendations for projects that would enhance fellowship activities or the worship experience. Several projects were completed this year. Memorial funds in memory of Lee Deuhr helped with the replacement of the dishwasher in the kitchen. I’d like to thank Sharon Gauslow for the beautiful remodel of the ladies restroom in memory of Carol Hudson. The Congregational Life Committee used memorial funds to update the Christmas decorations for the sanctuary. New candle lighters were purchased. We also provided the poinsettia plants for the altar during Advent. The Memorials Book is kept current with member deaths and gifting information. Respectfully submitted, Dana Herr, Committee Co-Chair PROPERTY COMMITTEE The Property Committee is pleased to report the following projects were completed in 2015: Exterior church building professionally power washed in late fall. Bids received and reviewed for new high-efficiency furnace/air conditioning at parsonage. Council selected bid at December 2015 meeting (funded by two anonymous donors). Continued replacing church light bulbs with new energy efficient light bulbs. This process started a couple years ago. As the fluorescent surface lights go bad, they will be replaced. Local sign company contacted to give church sign updated look. The company came out in December and will be presenting ideas to Council in early 2016. Reviewed property/worker’s comp insurance bids in depth. Council approved switching insurance companies beginning 1/1/16, with a projected cost savings of over $1,000 annually. Lines in parking lot were redrawn. Goals for 2016 include: replace gutters at parsonage, replace windows at parsonage and church, fix basement walls at parsonage, clean or possibly replace carpet in church social hall, seek lawn mowing bids, strip and wax hallway floors at church, continue replacing light bulbs with energy efficient ones, replace tiles in sanctuary, update main church sign. I would like to thank the members of the Property Committee for their hard work and efforts. Respectfully submitted, Property Committee Chair, John Gilson 8 YOUTH COMMITTEE Hebrews 6:9 (NLT) “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone especially to those in the family of faith.” Youth Group Activities in 2015: August 10: Our first youth meeting! August 14: youth washed windows at Holy Spirit Retirement Home August 22: youth helped Busy Workers put 100 school kits together August 31: youth rock climbing at Long Lines Rec Center and incorporated a lesson about Moses climbing Mt. Sinai August: youth launched “Build a Foundation” brick fundraiser (WE HAVE RAISED $1,312!!) September 12: youth helped with St. John’s Waffle Feed September 21: youth helped Gigi’s Playhouse clean and organize toys October 4: youth raised money and participated in Gigi’s Playhouse Walk event October 17: youth fundraiser – provided concessions at the St. John’s Parsonage auction October 19: youth attended the movie Woodlawn October: youth adopted 3 city street sidewalks/blocks November 1: youth served treats at fellowship and cleaned up to say thank-you for St. John member support November 12: Terry Hudson conducted acolyte training for youth and a calendar was circulated to parents for sign-up. I have talked with Pastor Swanson about training the remaining 2 youth and getting a solid calendar. I also spoke with Shelly about adding an acolyte piece to the weekly bulletin and newsletter. Susan Ivarsen cleaned all acolyte robes and sashes. Terry ordered new candle lighters, and also thought new sashes were needed. November 15: youth served at St. John’s Thanksgiving Dinner November 22: youth helped decorate St. John’s church for Christmas December: The kids and I started reading a devotional and a scripture reading each meeting. Pastor Swanson had the idea to start each meeting reading a devotional. We then start a discussion based on each scripture that is part of the devotional for the day. This has been going very well, and the kids sometimes seem to know more about scripture than I do myself, which is very encouraging! December: I have been working with Chemine Mulford and Tom Munson on coming up with a music piece the youth might perform during a church service, whether they sing, play an instrument, or assist with staging and props, etc. December 21: For Christmas I bought the kids “Jesus Calling” devotionals by Sarah Young. November-December: It has been difficult to schedule activities due to the holidays, so we took advantage of the time and have started working hard on getting the youth room finished. Almost 2 walls are painted, and we would like to order curtains, get some bean bag furniture, a radio, and maybe a foosball table, etc. 9 Youth Group Goals for 2016: Finish youth room Complete the “Build a Foundation” fundraiser and come up with other fundraising ideas Purchase Bible study workbooks Travel to Grotto Continue mission-centered, community service projects: Food Bank, Mercy Meals, Soup Kitchen, Gigi’s Playhouse, Ronald McDonald House, Holy Spirit Retirement Home, nursing home visits, etc. Develop more Christian-centered, fun youth activities (movie night, talent show, support-afriend night, family night, etc.) Connect with other churches for projects and activities WORSHIP COMMITTEE The Worship Committee is comprised of Linda Erickson, Deb Skouge, Chemine Mulford, and Mary Stock. Pat Duff also served much of the year on the committee. The Worship Committee is supported by the altar guild (headed by Sue Ivarsen) and its volunteers, ushers (John Willer), lectors (Gale Horan), nursery, communion assistants, and vocal and bell choirs (Chemine). While we most notice these participants on Sunday morning, they are very active throughout the week with practices, communion set-up, and planning. In January, the bell choir again participated in the 34th annual 12th night at Central Baptist Church. The worship and social committees served taverns for a Wednesday evening Lenten dinner. Easter 2015. 10 In April, the vocal choir took part in training at Morningside Lutheran, under the direction of Dr. Gary Hines, from the Sounds of Blackness, Minneapolis. 11 Christmas Eve 2015 Throughout the year, Chemine and others worked on updating the music library. This led to the idea of cataloging our choir music into an inventory spreadsheet, and working with other churches to share music with one another. This could help both St. John and other churches reduce the cost of ordering many new pieces each year. For the coming year, another choir workshop will be held in April. We hope to have the opportunity to bring in guest musicians to join with our vocal choir. We are also looking into possibly streaming our worship services through our website. Finally, we invite anyone interested in joining the worship committee, volunteering to help in any facet of worship, or offering ideas to help all of us in our worship of our God. Respectfully submitted, Tom Stock, Committee Chair 12 ENDOWMENT COMMITTEE The Endowment Committee met twice during 2015. The April meeting was devoted to reviewing the status of the fund at the end of the first quarter. Gifting decisions for 2015 were made in November as indicated below. The following persons served on the committee during the year. Their terms end on December 31st of the indicated years. Carol Hudson passed away in May and her seat remained unfilled for the rest of the year. Elwood Marquardt agreed to fill out the remainder of Carol’s term beginning January 1, 2016. Terry Hudson (2017) Keith Weaver (2017) Mary Stock (2016) Carol Hudson (2016) Elwood Marquardt (2015) Wendy Jackson, Financial Secretary, and James Beals, Treasurer, served as advisory members of the committee with voice but not vote. The committee again voted to make the 2015 allocations from the fund at is November meeting rather than wait until after the first of the year. The decisions were based on five percent of the balance of the fund as of September 30, 2015 which stood at $218,659.97. The amount available for gifting was again $11,000. The committee made the following gifting recommendations for approval by the Congregation Council at its December meeting. $1,100 each to the Warming Shelter, the Sioux City Soup Kitchen, the Salvation Army, and the Food Bank of Siouxland. $4,400 to ELCA Worldwide for gifts of $3,575 for five family farms, $500 for a biogas stove, $300 for three groves of fruit tree seedlings, and $25 for farming tools and training. $2,200 to St. John Lutheran Church to be used at the discretion of the Congregation Council for projects at the church. Respectfully submitted, Terry D. Hudson, Chair 13 PLANNING COMMITTEE Our Mission Statement The mission of St. John Lutheran Church is to provide opportunity for every individual to experience the joy of Jesus Christ through worship, education, fellowship and outreach. Unity: My vision, as chair of the Planning Committee, was to increase communication with each committee and between committees and to be an encouragement while they fulfilled their individual tasks. We set up meetings with committees, two at a time, providing a place to brainstorm and look at any concerns the committees may have. With the help of each member, we completed this goal. Challenges: Our biggest challenge has been realized and that is Pastor Hanneman’s retirement. Other challenges we are still facing: Declining membership, aging congregation, lack of youth, outreach to inactive members, and facing financial concerns. During this transitional period: What is your role? Praying daily, worshiping weekly, reading and studying the Bible regularly, serving others, in and beyond our congregation, encouraging and nurturing spiritual growth in others, giving generously of our time, talents and material resources. The role of the Planning Committee has changed since we were first formed. Since the Synod has stepped forward to direct our congregation, we have decided to discontinue meeting until we see we are needed again. Respectfully submitted by the Planning Committee, Jaimee Nutt, Tom Stock, John and Brenda Lohse and Glenn Ivarsen 14 AUDIT COMMITTEE Audit Committee met on January 10 at 9 a.m. Committee members present included: Sharon Gauslow, Elwood Marquardt, Jeanette Tiede, and Linda Erickson.
