Edexcel A2
Chemistry
George Facer
Structure of the book
The textbook covers the Edexcel specification for
A2 chemistry. Generally, the order follows that of the
specification. However, in order to bring all the
Unit 5 organic chemistry together in consecutive
chapters, the chapter on kinetics precedes those on
aromatic chemistry and organic mechanisms. To give
the student a better understanding of, and feel for,
some topics, the content of the book occasionally
goes beyond the confines of the A2 specification.
Full colour
throughout
The first eight chapters describe and explain the
material of Unit 4: Periodicity, quantitative
equilibria and functional group chemistry.
The following eight chapters cover the material of
Unit 5: Transition metals, quantitative kinetics
and applied organic chemistry. Each section
concludes with a practice unit test and the book
ends with a synoptic test paper (Practice Unit
Test 6B).
Margin comments are provided throughout the
book. These comprise valuable reminders and
snippets of information and include examiner’s
tips, which clarify what students need to know
and common sources of confusion.
Although this book is not a guide to the practical
chemistry that all A2 candidates will study, many
of the reactions that will be met in the laboratory are
detailed throughout the book.
A periodic table is displayed inside the back cover
of the book. This should be referred to for atomic
numbers, atomic masses and symbols of the
elements.
The author
George Facer is a chair of examiners. He was Head
of Science and Chemistry at Sherborne School for
many years and is the author of numerous chemistry
books, including the textbook Edexcel AS Chemistry

Student Workbooks will support your teaching
and help your students’ skills development.
The three AS and three A2 Student Workbooks each
cover key topics in core subject areas of AS/A-level
chemistry, relevant to all the main specifications, and
conclude with synoptic questions drawing together
different elements of the subject area.
Each topic comprises:
2 pages of source material (background material,
formulae, diagrams, etc.) giving an overview of the
topic; and
4–5 pages of related exercises designed to develop
and test student skills, with space provided for
written answers.
16
The exercises take various forms, including exam-style
questions, although the workbooks are not intended
as mock exams. They are designed for systematic
classroom use to support your own scheme of work
or as part of a revision programme.
Answers to the exercises are provided in an
accompanying set of Teacher Notes. Where there is
no objectively ‘right’ answer, the Notes identify the
key points that should appear in the answer.
The AS and A2 Chemistry Student Workbooks are
written by Rob King, a highly experienced teacher,
examiner and author.
Student Workbooks are available only in class sets
of 10, priced at £35 per set plus postage and packing.
Each workbook is between 48 and 58 pages long.

AS/A2 Multiple Choice Student Workbooks
These two workbooks provide an accessible and
engaging way to assess the degree to which students
have understood the key elements of each section of
the specification.
Written by Rob King, each full colour workbook is
over 80 pages long and contains nearly 600 questions
on the key topics of the main specification areas of
either AS or A2 chemistry. Student knowledge of each
topic is tested by 18 multiple choice and 18 shortanswer questions, with a further set of general
questions at the end of each section testing
understanding of the subject area. A test should take
about 50 minutes and can be assessed using the
allocated mark scheme. Answers and/or suggested
responses are provided in an accompanying set of
Teacher Notes.
The workbooks are available only in class sets of 10,
priced at £40 per set plus postage and packing. Each
set of workbooks contains one free copy of Teacher

AS/A-Level Resource Packs
AS/A-Level Chemistry Resource Packs
Harry Hammond, Rob King & Eric Sie
AS/A-Level Chemistry Resource Packs contain lesson
plans, photocopiable resource material and practical
ideas to offer you new ways of teaching the theory
behind AS/A-level chemistry.
The aim of the packs is to combine the teaching
of traditional theory with the latest ideas in
practicals and teaching aids, reducing your
preparation time and helping you deliver effective,
stimulating lessons.
The series of six packs covers all aspects of the
Subject Criteria for AS/A-level chemistry, and
throughout each pack there are invaluable tips for
teaching particularly awkward areas of the AS/A-level
specifications.
How the packs work
Each pack comprises 140–340 pages of photocopiable
material covering four or more topics, with each topic
further divided into sub-topics.
Each topic is addressed through:
a teaching plan, providing the teacher with
an outline of the topic, some ideas as to how to
introduce the new concepts that emerge, when
to use the material provided in the pack, and
time estimates for each sub-topic
resource sheets, designed to be used as handouts
or OHTs, including diagrams of structures, worked
examples of various types of calculation, apparatus,
data and charts
worksheets (and class-sheets) for each of the subtopics, primarily for use as homework, but with the
option of classroom use. Each worksheet is graded,
with the easier questions at the beginning and the
more involved questions towards the end. Answers are
given for all questions, both numerical and descriptive
And, where appropriate, each topic also contains:
practicals and demonstrations, all tried and tested,
with both traditional and more unusual ideas for
experimentation
teacher and technician notes, with full
requirements for each practical, as well as
sample results and answers to questions set
at the end of the practicals/demonstrations
revision sheets for each sub-topic, consisting
of a series of questions and answers to help the
students with their revision
a test on each sub-topic of between 40 and 90
minutes
a testing section of past questions (and answers),
from a variety of boards, containing multiple-choice,
structured and free response questions, relating
directly to the work covered in the topic
Key benefits
Dramatically cut your preparation time
Provide teaching schemes which have been
proven to work
Offer complete flexibility, as teaching plans are
self-contained
Provide homework and additional tasks for
students
Provide a solution to staff absence
