Marching Eagles Advance to Semi-State Competition
The Marching Eagles have added a new
chapter to the band’s history. After
making a re-appearance at Regionals,
the Marching Eagles earned a coveted
gold rating and, more importantly, a
spot among Indiana’s elite at the SemiState competition.
The band stepped on to the field at
Chesterton looking to raise the bar
with their best performance yet. The
atmosphere was electric; it was do-or-die
for the Eagles, who hoped to capitalize
on an already great season.
CCHS came into the competition
ranked 9th in North Division in Class B
by IndianaMarching.com, and they
hoped to make some noise and rise in
the rankings. But the rankings didn’t
mean a thing to the Eagles, who know
that nothing is ever certain in their line
of performance. It was a tough week of
practice for the band, and they ran, reran, and triple-ran through their show,
cleaning every detail, in the pursuit of
perfection. They couldn’t rest until
their dreams had been confirmed and
they had their ticket to the Semi-State
show at Warren Central.
And their dreams came true! After a
stunning performance which any band
would have been proud of, the Eagles
themselves confirmed that they were
moving on. The moment that it was
announced the Eagles would perform
at Semi-State seemed to be a motion of
agreement from the judges.
However, there was still work to be
done. During a tough week of practices,
the band added a new dimension to
their performance, with a thicker sound
and a greater variety of visuals to add to
their scores.
Then it was game time. The cold and
windy weather greatly affected the
band’s performance both musically and
visually. However, even with the possibility of an indoor performance looming, the band was able to overcome the
obstacles that mother nature had presented and gave the performance of a
lifetime.
The Marching Eagles finished five
places higher than predicted and
earned their highest score at an ISSMA
competition in six years. Although they
did not advance to state, everyone was
very proud of the band’s efforts. “I am
extremely pleased with our band’s performance at Semi-State,” said Mr. Criss
The band then ended their season with
another piece of history added. After
finishing in 6th place each of the past
three years at Mid-States Finals, the
Marching Eagles were eager to break
into the top five.
After their preliminaries performance,
the band was placed 3rd and less than a
point away from 2nd place. Then after
their best show of the season, the
Marching Eagles broke open the gap
and jumped up to 2nd place for their
best finish ever at Mid-States Finals.
This has indeed been a thrilling season
for the band. It has been required a lot
of time and focus from everyone.
“We’ve worked hard up to this point,
and our performance at Semi-State
showcased all our efforts and abilities,”
said senior Allison Wood. The band
would like to thank all the staff members, band parents, and other people
the community who have shown continuing support for the CCHS Marching Eagles.

CCHS Varsity Basketball Team visits Michigan State
Members of the Columbia City
varsity and junior varsity boys’
basketball teams recently traveled
to Michigan for a preseason
team-building trip. The first
night the team members traveled
to Grand Rapids where they
practiced at East Kentwood High
School—the largest high school in
the State of Michigan. Following
the late night practice, they were
entertained by participating in
Coach Davis’ mock NBA draft.
Next the team traveled to East
Lansing where they were provided the opportunity to sit in on
and watch the Michigan State
men’s basketball team practice. The
Spartans are currently ranked number six in the country. Following the
Spartan practice, the Eagles held a
ball arena. “Practicing on the Breslin Center floor was definitely one
of the best parts of the trip,” mentioned junior guard Brice Lantz
when asked about the weekend.
practice of their own. Much to the
surprise of the players the Saturday
afternoon practice was held in
Michigan State’s 15,000 seat basket-
The day concluded with the Eagle
players hanging out in the Spartan’s multi-million dollar locker
room and players’ lounge, which
included a nine panel big screen
TV, a dozen leather recliners, three
or four gaming systems, and a
ping-pong table. “The trip was
great,” said senior Adam Murphy,
“partly to be able to do all of the
things we did, but mainly just to
get away and hang-out together.”
The Eagles opened their season November 26 at home hosting Whitko.

CONSTRUCTION CAREER ACADEMY—ACCEPTANCE
Fred Eckart and the BCA (Building Contractors Association) of Northeast Indiana
announced that three CCHS students, Zac
Grable, James Myers, and Steven Plew, have
all been accepted to participate in the 8th
annual Construction Career Academy in Ft.
Wayne. The Construction Career Academy
is held over three days and highlights 16
construction trades and professions. The
Academy relates the skills and abilities
needed by professional contractors and
builds awareness of apprenticeship opportunities and their need for employees with
formal education after high school. Admission is limited to the top three students
from each school. Both Steven and James
are looking at this as an opportunity to
investigate various jobs, apprenticeship
programs, and post-secondary education.
Zac is following his original future plan and
plans to attend Ball State to major in architecture. All three are looking forward to
networking with professionals in all 16
construction trades. More information can
be obtained about the Building Contractors
Association of Northeast Indiana and the
Construction Career Academy at

YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS PRESENT
PLANS
Many young people have a dream of owning
their own business and being their own
boss. Miss Rush’s fall trimester entrepreneur students developed a written business
plan for a business of their choice and presented that plan to a panel of business/
industry members at the conclusion of fall
trimester. These businesses were created
and developed by the following entrepreneur students: Synyster Guitars, Zach
Shifflett; AH Customs, Austin Hartman;
Sk8 Trix, Sarah Bowers; Ruckman Grain &
Chemical Co., Seth Ruckman; Kay’s Fine
Dining, Krista Line; Mata’s Chills, Nick

MEDICAL INTERNS BEGIN
ROTATION AT WHITLEY
CCHS’s internship partnership with Parkview Whitley Hospital began ten years ago
and continues to thrive. Bridgett Johnson,
V.P. Patient Services, welcomes CCHS
students each trimester and encourages
them to ask questions of her staff and
learn as much as possible about the vast
number of careers at Parkview Whitley
during their 10-week unpaid internship.
Program Coordinator, Elizabeth Hanna
says, “The staff at Parkview Whitley Hospital works so closely with our students to
help them develop a well-rounded understanding of what it takes to work in the
medical field. The staff’s hands-on approach to teaching really shows in the excitement of our students as they talk about
the knowledge and experience they gain
while at Whitley. The interns know that
their mentors truly care about them and

CAREER’S: TOOL FOR COLLEGE &
CAREER PLACEMENT
Business and industry surveys indicate that
economic survival in the 21st century will
demand that students know and understand both fundamental and technical
concepts of business as well as possess the
ability to execute these concepts in nearly
any job/career setting. Every trimester
sophomore students in Orientation to Life
and Careers learn about their aptitudes,
interests, and personality traits as they
relate to possible educational and occupational opportunities, and each student
participates in a job-shadowing and a mock
interview. Mock interviews were conducted by Heather Juillerat of Star Insurance; Cathy Gardner, W.C. Planning &
Building; Michelle Culbertson, Columbia
City Chamber; Cathy Reeg of Star Financial Bank; Betty Mishler, EDC; Vanessa
Bills, Whitley County Foundation; and
our CDC staff: Jeff Clark, Elizabeth
Hanna, and Cheryl Schuman.

Whitley Medical.)
Students participating winter trimester at
Parkveiw Whitley include: Alyse Perry,
Christin Rethlake, Breanna Schaper, Marla
Walters, Karlee Macy, Mindi Hoffman,
Alex Bunyan, Nick Rupert, Austin Straub,
and Justin Hearld.
