My name is Natalie Hiles, and I am the Nursing Games Call for Volunteers Hello fellow nurses! I am the Nursing Senator. Welcome to my little corner! Hi Nursing Students, My name is Natalie Hiles and I am the Nursing Senator for the 2014-2015 academic school year. I attend weekly senate caucus meetings and University Senate meetings monthly. For those who are not so familiar with Senate Caucus and McGill Senate, fear no more! Valerie De Broux, our awesome NUS BSc(N) VP academic and I have a quick Q & A for all you inquisitive nursing students about senate. Val: So Natalie, What is Senate Caucus? Natalie: Senate Caucus is where all the student senators meet on Monday nights to discuss student concerns and write policies as a group. Val: What is McGill Senate? Natalie: Senate embodies the McGill population as a whole. McGill Senate handles the policies and guidelines that manage all academic matters at McGill. McGill Senate is comprised of professors, students, senators, and administrators. This is where students have the most political influence, so let your Student Senator (ME) know what matters to you! To learn more about Senate and its committees, check out http://ssmu.mcgill.ca/senators/ All nursing students are encouraged to attend as audience members at senate. Audience members cannot speak on the floor of Senate, but your presence is an important way to remind Senators that they must represent the needs of the greater McGill community. You can check out Senate meetings in Leacock 232 Do you have a competitive edge? Do you go through Frosh withdrawal when the winter blues set in? Well, we've got great news for you! What: We need delegation leaders, referees for the various sports, OSCE situation leaders, and general volunteers When: Jan 23rd-25th, 2015 How: email Melisa Gudzio at volunteers.jiiq2015@gmail.com Health Challenge at 14:30, one Wednesday a month. Part of my job is to advance the diverse needs of the nursing students here at McGill. I am here to help all Nursing students in social, cultural, and personal opportunities as well to aid in improving the access to our professors. I am here to aid in the assistance of any issue or concern with matters dealing with McGill and with the Ingram School of Nursing. The student senators are working on creating two new policies for McGill University. I would like to hear from the Nursing students on what your thoughts and/or experiences are with the below two matters so I can better shape the policy for the Ingram School of Nursing. Please let me know what your thoughts and view are on the below topics: 1. Mental Health Access You can find the current policy on Mental health here 2. Your Athletic Rep is bringing you our first McGill NUS Health Challenge!!! It’s starting on Monday, September 22 and will last until November 30! You just have to go on http://www.defi-sante.net/? lang=eng, create your account under McGill NUS and create or join a team. What is the health challenge? It is a 10 weeklong challenge between BScN U0, U1, U2, U3, BNI U2 and U3. It is designed to help us do more physical activity and adopt a healthier lifestyle. How can I register? You register on the website (http://www.defisante.net/?lang=eng) and you create or join a team of 1 to 5 participants. You have to register the team in its current year of study (BScN U0, U1, U2, U3, BNI U2, U3). How does it work? You enter your daily/weekly physical activity in your account, and then your activity is converted to a number of health-kilometers, which are added to the total number of health-kilometers of your team and your year of study. How are the health kilometers calculated? The amount of health-kilometers that an activity gives you corresponds to the amount of energy spent doing an activity. This calculation is based on 3 variables: the type of activity, the duration and the intensity. The intensity variable is dependent of your health condition. You can also get health-kilometers by following your health objectives (ex: eat at least 5 vegetables and fruits a day; sleep at least 7h per night etc...). What happens at the end of the challenge? At the end of the challenge (10 weeks), the year of study that cumulated the more health-kilometers is declared the winner of this semester health challenge; declared the winner of this semester health challenge; and the first 3 teams that cumulated the more health-kilometers will win awesome prices!!! (gift cards, gym pass, free fitness class etc...) If you have any question regarding the health challenge, feel free to contact me at camille.garillot@mail.mcgill.ca.
