always love others as ourselves. We have disobeyed You and deserve
to be punished. But we are truly sorry for our sins, and trusting in
Jesus we pray: Have mercy on us and forgive us.
Hymn 408: T he Friend I Need

What a friend Jesus is to lay down His life for you! In Him all your sins
are forgiven. Peace be with you.
C: Amen. Thanks be to God!
Prayer:
P: Heavenly Father, who through the work of Your Son Jesus Christ
restored to us Your peace, we give You all glory, thanks, and praise.
Strengthen our friendship with You through Your Word and Sacraments.
Through the Spirit’s work strengthen our relationships with friends here
on earth, especially those who have joined us here today. We pray in

The offering of grateful hearts
Prayer of the church:
Pastor: plain type.
Cong: underlined, boldface type.
Dear Lord Jesus, Friend of sinners and Savior of all mankind: You
intended that people of all races from every corner of the world
should live in peace, harmony, and friendship with one another and
with You. But sin has caused r ifts in families, unr est in our
communities, as well as strife and war between nations. We, too, have
been the cause of many arguments and divisions. Sin dr ives a wedge
between people and it cuts us off from You, the holy God. Our only plea
is that You would forgive us for Your mercy’s sake.
We praise You for entering our world as one of us to heal divisions and
break down the barrier of sin. Thank You for being the obedient Servant
we could not be. Thank You for offer ing the pr ice to set us fr ee
which was beyond our ability to pay. Thank You for being the Friend
who daily assures us of forgiveness and blessing on life’s journey.
You have graciously provided believing friends who comfort and
encourage us with Your promises. Help us to express our appreciation for
their love.
Lord, by Your Spirit fill us with Your love that we may love like You.
Enable us to be faithful friends to others. Give us cour age to point
out sin, not in selfish pride, but in love to show others their need for
forgiveness. Give us opportunity to share the thrilling news that You
have made our peace with God by Your cross. May we see all people
whom You bring into our lives as precious souls You would have us
befriend.
As Your friends who have received eternal riches, we gladly bring You
our earthly offerings and pray that they may help in the preaching,
teaching, and spreading of Your Word. Give us our daily bread in the
manner and amount You know is best.
Old Testament lesson:
1 Samuel 18:1-4….The love of friends shows in freely giving for the
good of one another.
Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was
knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Saul
took him that day, and would not let him go home to his father’s house
anymore. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved
him as his own soul. And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and
gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his
belt.
VBS children: God Loves Me Dearly
Epistle lesson:
Philippians 1:1-11….Jesus unites us in a bond of loving fellowship.
Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in
Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:
Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every
prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, for your fellowship
in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this very
thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until
the day of Jesus Christ; just as it is right for me to think this of you all,
because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the
defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of
grace. For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the
affection of Jesus Christ.
And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in
knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are
excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of
Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus
Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
The Apostles’ Creed:
Bless all who are gathered here with Your friendship today and forever in
glory. In Your name we pray. Amen.
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered
under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He
descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He
7

ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the
Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and
the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the
body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn: Lord, Help Us Walk Your Servant Way
Sermon: John 15:9-17
“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. If
you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have
kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love. These things I
have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy
may be full. This is My commandment, that you love one another as I
have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s
life for his friends. You are My friends if you do whatever I command
you. No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what
his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I
heard from My Father I have made known to you. You did not choose
Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit,
and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My
name He may give you. These things I command you, that you love one
another.”
