The New England Center for Investigative Reporting has taken a close look at why so few tickets are available, and here are some answers: Gone is the cream of the ticket inventory, weekend games against other top teams. The vast majority nearly 70 percent of tickets sold to date were reserved months or even years ago by corporations and individual season ticket holders or scooped up by ticket resellers, according to an analysis of team seat sales confirmed by the Red Sox. It was here when George Washington visited, both as a general on his way to take command of the Continental Army and as the country’s first president on his inaugural tour in 1789. The giant black oak was here for the invention of automobiles and two world wars. “I saw the coming of the railroads. . . . I was here as the Industrial Revolution made Springfield a manufacturing giant,” said Jim Boone, taking on the voice of the oak tree that towers outside his home on Florida Street in the city’s McKnight neighborhood. Recently, Jim and his wife, Merry Boone, who moved into the home in 1976, celebrated the life of the oak, which will soon have to be cut down due to old age. “We didn’t want to be the ones to bring it down, but it’s dangerous to keep it. It cannot die a natural death like in the forest falling limb by limb so we have to cut it down,” Merry Boone said. “The current house was built in 1887. There was a house prior to that in the 1870s. The tree was here well before both houses. Foresters have looked at it and said it dates over 200 years,” Jim Boone said. A core sample taken on Oct. 24 determined the tree dates back 300 years or more. “Over the last few years, some large branches have fallen even on calm days,” Boone said. “We had arborists come out and look at it, and they said the tree has passed its prime and is hollow in some places. Kennedy Middle School on Berkshire Avenue plan on refilling it as many times as they can. Maryorie Mendez, 13, Kay L. Lopez, 14, and Maunel Medeiros, 13 are all eighth-graders on the All Stars student advisor group. They will be making daily rounds until Nov. 17 collecting pennies for the Pennies Plus Campaign, an effort started at the mayor’s office to raise money for the American Red Cross. All of the money will go directly to the 65 evacuee families affected by Hurricane Katrina who are living in the Springfield area. Principal Frances Cameron attended the city-wide principals meeting about the campaign, and went back to her school ready to get the students involved. “I thought it was a wonderful idea especially because it is a local effort for families affected by the hurricane,” she said. Natalie Shaw, the group’s advisor, quickly found students who were interested in participating. “The principal came to me with the project and said she needed some students to work on it as a group.
