The Girl Who Can Fight Back!
A special encounter with one of the PLMun’s Female Martial Artist.
Volume 1, Issue 1
By: Maria Theresa Hernandez
However, it is wise to enjoy the game and to think
that rivalries can be positive. So does Joan enjoy competing?
Does she actually enjoy fighting against opponents alongside
her teammates? Joan stated, “Yes, I enjoy competing against
our opponents for the reason that we learn something new
from our opponents and our teammates. Then again, the
techniques that we actually apply in every competition are
complex. So, it is hard for us to think of the how techniques
that opponents would suddenly throw at us can be hurtful.
The feeling that you have to do kung fu in order to fight and
win can be frightening.”
Of course, training is not easy and if one
can imagine, it is especially hard to train if the lessons
that must be learned involves getting kicked, beaten
up and hurt. Nonetheless, interestingly, Joan was able
to overcome the pain. So, is it just easier for her than
other typical girls? Does she enjoy learning kung fu?
How does she view the process of learning kung fu?
Joan says, “Yes, kung fu is fun. But of course, I can tell
you that it is not easy. Kung fu is not like any other
sports out there; it is martial arts, a DEADLY martial
arts. Since it teaches techniques on how to fight, we
have to get hurt. So,of course, the pain is part of the
lesson.”
February 9, 2015 – The New leaders for University Student

officers are expected to succeed the current council lead by
Jako Franco Manikan, the student regent, in the following

Kung fu must have given Joan great lessons as she
clearly put it all at heart. How can these lessons be applied in
life itself? Joan explains, “As a student who is taking Criminology, kung fu is completely fit for my course. Plus, since I am a
girl, people naturally deemed me defenceless. A lot more
people seem to be hostile now so I know that kung fu can help
me in defending myself and other people against violence.”

People naturally charge every struggle into experience or a new lesson learned. One of the challenges that are
filled with new lessons is competition. So, does Joan draw
lessons after every competition? She responded saying, “Of
course! In every competition, there is a loser and a winner. So
far, the lesson that I truly learned is to be humble.”
“The PLMun Kung Fu Club” must have highly
trained Joan considering how passionate she is about
the martial art. So after a long day of striving for mastery, what happens afterwards? Does she compete with
other schools? Joan answered, “Actually, we usually

Quantity Doubled,
Quality Lost?
The overwhelming population of 10, 837 students in
Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Muntinlupa this academic
year 2014-2015 compared with 9837 students last year
raised the eyebrows of the critiques in and out of the
campus. The more, the merrier, isn’t it? But sometimes,
it may be not. Considering the holding capacity of the
classrooms in the pamantasan, one can conclude that
the university is already crowded. Although we cannot
decline to those young people who are eager to enroll
and finish a degree in a most practical way they can
think of, the quality of education seems to be compromised.
Seeing a classroom full of students ready to learn is a
positive matter, but at the back of our minds we are
telling ourselves that how can a student learn well if
the classroom that they are in is congested? A classroom that normally holds a maximum of 30 persons is
now packed with 20 students more. Imagine the inconvenience that the students endure just to acquire the
much coveted knowledge that they rightfully deserve.
On the other hand, the scarcity of classrooms is not the
only issue here. Lack of facilities like inadequate supply
of arm chairs, damaged ceiling fans, and unkempt
comfort rooms seems to be a major problem as well.
Creating a classroom environment that is conducive for
learning is one of the factors
that the curriculum stakeholders
should consider in order to
attain the holistic development
of the learners. And who are
these curriculum stakeholders?
They are the teachers, principals/deans, school administration, faculty and staff, parents,
and even the learners themselves are a part of it. So, it only
means that the fate of a certain
learning institution lies in the
hands of these people. We
believe that in a unified effort
from these stakeholders, the betterment of our dearest
pamantasan is possible.
To start with, the selection of the students to be admitted in the pamantasan should be in line with the CHED
standards, meaning there are certain criteria that they
need to pass in order to be admitted in the school. The
process should be rigidly observed in order to pick the
deserving ones, the ones who can uplift the image of
the institution.
Secondly, there should be a coordination between the
administration and the faculty and staff. Since the
faculty members are more more aware about the
problems in the university, they should consult the
administration for help and assistance. Sometimes, the
problem that we mainly have is proper collaboration
with the authorities.
With all the inconvenience that the school faces right
now, it looks like the institution’s vision and mission
seems to be forgotten. The pursuit for excellence has
been taken-for-granted. The students suffer the consequences of this negligence the most. Now, the quality of more aware about the problems in the university, they

Lastly, the students should also take part in helping the
university improve. Aside from studying well and
passing all their subjects, they should also know how to
be considerate with the things that the school has.

As the saying goes, there is greatness in numbers. The
more people who will contribute for the school’s success,
the better. We should all work hand-in-hand to keep
the legacy that our Pamantasan preserves: which is to
provide quality education for all Muntinlupeños. With
that end in mind, population will not be an issue
anymore.

“Can you be a transformational leader?”
That question bothered me before our seminar in special
topic subject started. One of my classmates on that section actually asked
me that, and seeing the embellished signage posted on the board that bore
the words “TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER”, I realized that the topic
will be about leadership. Then an idea just popped out of my head and I
thought, “Am I qualified enough to become a transformational leader?”.

Fire drill last February 17, 2015.
―OMG, the tuition fee will go up? Kainis!‖
As a student of PLMun, have you ever found yourself
uttering these words? Most probably yes. After all, one
big reason why we all opted to go to our local university is because of its-budget-friendly tuition costs. Now,
come tuition fee hike, we can expect more grumbles
and scowls and an angry word here and there from the
students who will be at the receiving end of it.
annoyed at increasing tuition fees is that most of us are
hardly informed of when it will exactly increase, how
much will it be, a most importantly, why does it need
to increase. Students, many of them working to earn
for their schooling expenses themselves, are caught by
surprise come enrolment, when they find that the
tuition fee have gone up without warning. Also, what is
this about gradually increasing the tuition fee until we
could not afford it anymore? Isn’t this a locally-funded
institution, and don’t our parents’ taxes go to funding
it? Why should they charge more? What does increasing
the tuition fee serve, exactly?
“We, the students, and also the ones who help us get

Now, there is really no problem if students
need to pay a bit more in order to go to college; after
all, nothing in life is free and it is our duty to do our
share to achieve progress, which in the end would also
benefit the students themselves (hopefully). The only
snag is if there really is progress. We, the students, and
also the ones who help us get an education; truly hope
that improvement will be evident in a faster pace.
There is hope; the grounds are ever neater and greener,
thanks to accreditation visits and the landscaping that
has beautified our university environs; the once-closed
and waterless CRs are being opened and are having
running water, albeit sporadically; and the lack of
professors, though still not fully remedied, are being
answered.
In the next time we pay the increased
tuition fees in our dear university with the hard-earned
money of our parents or of ourselves, we hope that the
University administration would use it to continue
responding to the many problems our school has. And

might have those tablets promised in the school’s accreditation plans.

After the shaking, the best thing to do is to evacuate the building and go to the central assembly area. But be aware of your surroundings. Never evacuate automatically because there could be more danger
outside. Assess your location for any dangers (broken glass, fallen items,
fire, chemical spills, etc.) and report this to the rescue teams. Also check
for a safer passage or exit route from your room to the assembly area.
Do not use the elevators.

and electrical lines. That’s why it is
important to know how to use the fire
extinguisher just in case you’ll face a
case like this. PASS is the key!
