Elements of high quality child care curriculum will be explored. The focus will be on the early childhood educator’s role to create high quality child care environments. The role of the early childhood educator in providing high quality care through fostering emotional wellbeing and social competence will be studied. The early childhood educator’s use of positive guidance to facilitate the child’s growing self concept and self control will be examined. The aspects of carefully designed schedules and the routines and transitions within them and the role they play to ensure high quality child care programs will be explored. (Conestoga College: Introduction to ECE – ECE1030) Child Development: TOF4TQ Pass level – 60% Credit value – 1.0 This course introduces the chronological study of human development. It begins with prenatal influences and examines the age-stages of conception and infancy. The interactive nature of the physical, cognitive and psychosocial domains of the influence on human development will be emphasized. The major theories of development will be used to analyze different developmental events through the life span. A central theme of the course is the nature-nurture controversy. (Conestoga College: Child Development: The Early Years, ECE1065) Fitness: PLI4TQ Pass level – 55% Credit value – 1.0 Provides students understanding of components of fitness and its application to their lifestyle. Students develop and implement a personal fitness program by applying basic concepts of fitness and demonstrating appropriate fitness skills. This course balances fitness theory with practical training and will vary as the course progresses. (Conestoga College: Get Fit 1, LIBS1230) Human Services: HHK4T Pass level – 60% Credit value – 1.0 In this course, students will focus on developing an awareness of themselves as a helper. By learning the fundamentals of the helping process, a focus of beginning to understand how to approach clients’ needs, will develop. Through exploring and applying casework principles, skills in approaching and developing the professional relationship will develop. Students will also examine how their values and personal styles relate to effective helping. A review of theories of helping will assist students in developing a comprehensive view of approaching problem solving. Experience in public speaking and developing presentation skills will supplement didactic presentations. (Conestoga College: Human Services 1 – HSF1050) Canadian Criminal Justice Systems: HCF4TQ Pass level – 55% Credit value – 1.0 This course provides an overview of the Canadian Criminal Justice System with a particular emphasis on the history, function, role and organization of Canadian law enforcement services; it examines the operation of the criminal justice system. Each of the major components from enforcement through the courts and correctional services will be explored. (Conestoga College: Canadian Criminal Justice Systems – LAW1060) Security Fundamentals Pass Level – 50% Credit value – 1.0 This course is intended for new security guards and/or security guards who need to meet the training requirement to obtain an Ontario Security Guard License. This course contains 12 core modules as prescribed by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services, including emergency first aid. (Conestoga College: Security Guard Licencing for Ontario – SECU1040 Connecting You to Your Future … and Beyond MOE Course Name & Code PSW Practice A: HIC4TQ Pass level – 65% Credit value – 1.0 Course Description This course introduces the student to the role, responsibilities and scope of practice, including workplace legislation and established policies and procedures relevant to the Personal Support Worker. The student is introduced to the roles of the health care team with a focus on inter-professional relationships. Current issues and trends in health care delivery and their impact on the Personal Support Worker will be discussed. The students will be introduced to the concept of individuality. In this course the student will cover basic oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on workplace application and be introduced to the concepts of communication and interpersonal skills essential to establishing and maintaining effective relationships with clients and family members. Problem solving and decision making skills will be presented and the use of written materials, including documentation and care planning will be discussed. The principles of teaching and learning, observation skills, and reporting to supervisors will be taught. Students will be provided with opportunities to practice these skills. The concepts introduced in this course are incorporated in all courses. (Conestoga College: Professional Practice A – PSW1480) PSW Practice B: HIJ4TQ Pass level – 65% Credit value – 1.0 This course continues to emphasize the role of the Personal Support Worker and the individuality of the client. It also continues to build on basic oral and written communication skills for the workplace. Students will learn how to plan, write and revise written communication using correct grammar, sentence structure and mechanics. Students will also communicate orally, through regular short presentations and classroom work. The concept of inter-professional teamwork and the importance of inter-professional communication will be discussed. Students will learn the importance of the role of the Personal Support Worker in relation to inter-professional collaboration. Stress and time management skills will be course themes. Family violence and abuse will be discussed and the student will learn how to respond appropriately if abuse is suspected. The concepts introduced in this course are expressed in all courses. (Conestoga College: Professional Practice B – PSW1490) Basic Design: AEL4TQ Pass level – 55% Credit value – 1.0 Using a variety of tools and visual exercises this course will introduce the student to organizing elements of twodimensional design. Elements such as line, space, texture, value, colour, and spatial illusion will be explored. To enable the student to employ visual awareness and dynamics in the field of two dimensional design. Critical evaluation skills will play a key part of individual class discussion and group critiques. (Conestoga College: Basic Design A – ARTS1000) Design: AEF4TQ Pass level – 55% Credit value – 1.0 Basic Design B will study how to organize and manage visual information. Using a variety of tools and visual exercises this course will introduce the student to the principles of design (balance, proportion, harmony, unity, contrast, emphasis, repetition and visual movement). Elements of design will be related to the principles in order to enable the student to employ visual awareness and dynamics in the field of two dimensional designs. Critical evaluation skills will play a key part of individual class discussion and group critiques.
