Basketball player at Father Ryan HS who had a major impact on helping to break the color barrier,
not only at Father Ryan, but across the state of TN...believed to be the first African-American to
play for a predominantly white high school team in the NIL, the state of Tennessee, and presumably
the South...in December of 1963, Willie and his teammate, Jessie Porter, stepeed on the court for
Father Ryan and history was made...in his 2-year career the Irish posted a 52-6 record...led his team
against a nationally touted Pearl HS in front of a crowd of 8,300...game believed to have been the 1st
in the South between an African-American school and a predominantly white school...Willie was
