1. Message – consists of information (ideas, thoughts, or data that you want to share with others).
2. Hardware – physical parts of the computer. Anything you can see. Example—monitor, printer,
and mouse.
3. Software – a program that contains instructions for a computer (also known as applications).
Examples – Microsoft Word, Ainsworth, Windows Media Player
4. Input – refers to the method used to enter or transmit your message to the computer. Examples –
keyboarding, speaking, and drawing.
5. Output – information or data retrieved or received from a computer. Examples – text on the
monitor, printed copy.
3. Explain the roles of an access point in a wireless network.
It is a piece of hardware that connects to a larger network.
The access point routes the signal from wireless devices to that
network. For example, you might use an access point to
accept signals and connect them to the Internet.
4. What is the purpose of a password? Give four rules for
choosing and using passwords.
The purpose of a password is to protect your data, files, pictures, e-mail, and other information from
unauthorized use by others.
1. Do not share your password with anyone. (Don’t leave it on a piece of paper by your computer)
2. Do not create an obvious password. (Don’t use pet’s name, girlfriend or boyfriend’s name, birth
date, address, etc. . .)
3. Do not create an unnecessarily long password.
4. Do not forget your password.
5. Why is a computer virus dangerous to your computer or network?
They are dangerous because they can quickly destroy data. They can also cause a computer or
network to stop working properly. In order to protect your data from computer viruses, you must
have installed a computer virus program: Norton, McAffee
6. Explain the difference between an operating system and software applications.

Software programs transform data into pictures, text, spoken words. Examples are Microsoft Word,
Adobe Photoshop. Operating systems runs everything on a computer. Examples are Windows,
Macintosh, Linux. Others OS systems would be Windows Pocket PC, Palm OS.
7. List and briefly describe three types of computer interfaces.
1. Text User Interface – users must type text to input commands to a
computer.
2. Graphic User Interface – uses pictures called icons to represent commands
or programs.

3. Speech User Interface – allows users to input commands by talking.
8. What happens when you click a program’s Minimize Control button? How can this action be
reversed?
The Minimize Control button reduces the window to a button on the taskbar. To reverse this action,
click on the Right click, Restore Control button. Or just left click and it restores itself.
9. What programs are usually included in an office suite application? Give three examples of office
suite software.
The programs that are usually included are word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database,
personal management, and internet browser programs.
Three examples would be Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, and Internet
Explorer), Lotus SmartSuite, Corel WordPerfect, Star Office, and AppleWorks
10. Give two advantages of using an office suite over using individual programs designed by different
companies.
1. Many features and commands that you learn to use in one program can also be used in other
programs in the suite.
2. Programs in a suite are designed to work together.

11. Describe two ways in which you can close a program when working with Microsoft Windows.
1. Click File from the Menu bar and click Exit.
2. Click the red close button on the right of the title bar.

12. When keying text in Microsoft Word, what action does pressing the Home key cause? When keying
text in Microsoft Word, what action does pressing the End key cause?
Pressing the Home key causes the insertion point to move quickly to the beginning of the line.
Pressing the End key causes the insertion point to move quickly to the end of the line.
13. What happens to a document that has not been saved when you shut down your computer?
It will be lost once the program is closed or the computer is shut down.
14. What is the purpose of the File, Close command in Microsoft Word?

The purpose of file close is to clear to screen of the document. If you haven’t saved yet, you will be
prompted to save.
15. What is the purpose of the Print Preview command in Microsoft Word, and when should you use it?
Use print preview to check the layout of your document such as margins, line spacing, and tabs,
before printing.
16. List three of the options that may be changed in the Print dialog box of Microsoft Word.
1. The number of copies
2. The printer the document is printing to

17. The Help feature in Microsoft Word includes options on three tabs. List and briefly describe the three
tabs.
1. Contents – displays a list of topics you can click on to display helpful information.
2. Answer Wizard – lets you ask a question
3. Index – enables you to key a word or select a keyword to display a list of topics pertaining to the
keyword.
18. How does the storage capacity of a floppy disk or CD compare to that of a hard drive on a computer
or a network?
Floppy disks and CDs are able to contain a lot less
information than a hard drive on a computer or a network.
Floppy’s room =1.44 megabytes
CD’s room =500 megabytes
Flash Drive = 256 mb to 1 gb
Hard drive’s room =74.4 gigabytes
19. List five actions that the Windows Explorer program
allows you to do.
1. Creating Folders
