went to see a Sufi and told him about his (re)search. The Sufi said: 'Go away and ponder this - IHMN.' The man went away. When he came back, the Sufi is dead. 'Now I shall never know the Truth', moaned the puzzler! At that moment Sufi's chief disciple appeared. 'If you are worrying about secret meaning of IHMN, I will tell you. It is initials of Persian Phrase "In huruf maani nadarand" - "these letters have no meaning."' 'But why should I be given such a task?' cried the puzzling man. 'Because, when a donkey comes to you, you give him cabbages. That is his nutrition, no matter what Donkey calls it. Donkeys probably think that they are doing something far more significant than eating cabbages.' 3 SIMPLICITY A scholar said to ...: "You often say that our logical questions are incomprehensible to you. Can you give an example of what they seem like to you?" "Here is an example. I was once travelling by train and we went through seven tunnels. Opposite me was sitting a peasant who obviously never been in a train before. After seventh tunnel the peasant tapped me on the knee and said: 'This Train is complicated. On my donkey I can get to my village in only one day. But by train, which seem to be travelling faster than a donkey, we have not yet arrived at home, though the sun has risen and set seven whole times.'" ... I like this too - it can so easily be expressed in English but no great men of letters have written them. ... A certain Bektashi dervish was respected for his piety and appearance of virtue. Whenever anyone asks him how he had become so holy, he always answered: "I know what is in Koran." One day when he just given this reply to an enquirer in a coffee house, when an imbecile asked: "Well, what is in the Koran?" "In the Koran," said Bektashi, "There are two pressed flowers and a letter from my friend Abdullah." 4 ONE MORE TIME Hafiz is not Hafiz if love can't cross the barrier of Pacific or Indian ocean and reach the shores of English, America, Canada, Arabia, Africa, ... , India, Language, or Time: THESE BEAUTIFUL LOVE GAMES Young lovers wisely say: "Let's try from this angle, May be something marvelous would happen, May be three suns and two moons will roll out, From some unknown place in the body, Our passion yet to detonate." Old lovers say: "We may do it one more time, How about vertical or upside down - Swinging on a rope from ceiling, May be a part of God is Still hiding in a corner of our heart, Our devotion yet to reveal." Bottom Line: Please do not stop playing this Game of love. 5 CONTACT I had just kissed the black stone When some women came hurrying. They had come to perform the ritual rounds, Covering their faces with veil. They uncovered themselves, They are like rays of Sun coming out of clouds, "Restrain yourself!" they seem to say, Since souls can be lost in eye contacts..... ~ Ibn Arabi 6 DOG COULD BEAR A guard hit a dog with a stick. It howled as it suffered. 'Why has he struck you?' 'He could not bear to see one better.' ....Shibli 7 FOOD OF PARADISE Yunus, son of Adam thought, in various channels that the food, he consumes for his sustenance, reaches him truly divined by Almighty and no other. In case he throws himself in the hands of Allah, any how Almighty shall conceive a way to supply the food to reach him. Perhaps thus he might be able to reach Almighty himself tracking the route of food supply. Thinking thus he left his abode and placed himself directly at the hands of Allah in a place on the bank of Tigris River. He did not wish to beg since he wished to discover the path of food reaching him straight from Almighty the creator. While birds and beasts around him were happy receiving their desires fulfilled in their domain created by Almighty, Yunus received nothing. He spent watching the river waves and fishes and listening to sounds from people busy on their route to home or business. He did not lose hope. Yunus watched the river and kept his prayer schedule - once decision is taken he is determined to see the end. Two days passed, before his mid-noon prayer he saw a packet was floating in the river coming downstream. He went in the water and fetched the packet - it was wrapped in leaves and tied with palm fiber. Packet contained 3/4th pound of Fragrant Halwa from Baghdad - delicious from the very look of it with appetizing smell, and plenty of nourishment. Belief thus confirmed and in possession of Halwa from Paradise, Yunus thought, if this be repeated every day then surely he would be able to reach the source - The Almighty. He waited for the Halwa from Paradise to come on next day and found the same floating down the river Tigris. Yunus set out to find out the source upstream of the Halwa. It took many days to reach a place where the river is broad and there is an island, wherein was a palace. From distance he also noticed one beautiful girl came out of palace balcony for a moment and threw his food packet into the river. Yunus now knew the giver however did not know the Truth. He could not contain his curiosity to know the truth behind the packet. He met a dervish in the river bank who was about to leave. Dervish told him that the beautiful in the palace is a princess but a prisoner of an evil just now. The Evil has barred everyone to approach that palace with a spell since she declined to marry him. She is served by many maids in the place but all approaches and exits to palace is barred however. Dervish taught Yunus many words, many sounds, many actions, many symbols, and many prayers; invoking them Yunus could possibly call upon Jinns and with their help bring down the defense. Yunus was curious to know the truth of origin of Halwa. He did respectfully whatever needed to be done to bring down the defense. A bridge rose from the river bed and he could enter the palace and give freedom to all the prisoners including Princess. Princess approached Yunus and asked Yunus, how could he be rewarded for the great deeds he has done to free her island palace. Yunus only wished to know the truth about the packet she threw everyday in the river Tigris. she said that she is obligated to tell the truth to him though private - it is her remnant of daily toilet that she uses for her body from some paste and asses milk. After bath she makes a packet and throws it away. Yunus realized truth as per individuals understanding - what is remnant of toilet paste for Princess is Food of Paradise for him. 8 Those who wish to know further, according to Halqavi, the author, this story can be read by any one any time and does not need special conditioning. Yunus, son of Adam, was Syrian, died in 1670. He had remarkable healing power and was an inventor. 9 WHEN WATERS WERE CHANGED Khidr the Teacher of Moses called upon Mankind and announce on such and such date all waters would be changed all over the world. Unless hoarded all waters shall disappear. It would be later replaced with new kind. Drinking of new water would make one insane. Only one man listened to it and he collected some water in jars and kept it hidden. On that certain day, all water supply from streams river wells .. Went dry. This man of course did not have any concern since he had his water supply while none had. When new water came through streams, rivers and wells, all drank the same. This man observed them from distance and found they indeed gone crazy - behaving, doing, and talking unbecoming of themselves. For some days he remained aloof and drank from his own water supply till he realized that it is not much fun being sane alone. He then abandoned his water supply and drank the new water and became one of the insane. Others thought for no reason this man acted real crazy but now he is one of them, miraculously he is cured of his craziness. They thought no more about this. 10 THE THREE TRUTHS The ... are known as Seekers of Truth - the knowledge of Reality. Rudarigh, a great lord of Murcia Spain, decided to possess this Truth. He sought out Omar el-Alawi of Tarragona and brought him to his court and said, "I order you to tell the truths which you know and must be told in manner I understand, otherwise your life is forfeit." Omar asked, "Do you observe in your court when an arrested person tells truth in answer to a question that the truth does not incriminate him, and he is released to freedom?" "That is so", the lord said. "I call upon everyone to witness this by the honor of our lord, and I will tell three truths and not one", said Omar. "We must also be satisfied and proof must accompany the telling, that you claim Truths are indeed so", said Rudarigh. "For such a lord as you are, we can give truths not one but three and they are all self evident", said Omar. 'The first Truth - I am he who is called Omar the Sufi of Tarragona. "The second Truth is that you have agreed to release me if I tell the truth." "The third is that you wish to know the truth as you understand it". Such was the impression on tyrant that he could not deny freedom to Omar. Those who want to know more, this is an oral account by el-Mutanabbi and he ordained that this episode must not be written down for 1000 years; he has died 1000 years ago. Being it an Oral account, it has undergone continuous change in accordance with changes of time and place. 11 MAULANA BAHAUDIN NAQSHBAND Was asked 'How is it that ignoble men or infants, as in so many stories, can be spiritualized by a glance or touch, or coming in contact with a great teacher?' This was his reply: .... The great emperor of Byzantium had a dreadful disease. All attempts to cure the same was futile - no doctor could cure! As a last resort in order to save the life of emperor messengers were sent to every part of the world and to all known great masters with a full list of symptoms of the dreadful disease with the hope of possible cure for the same. One such messenger arrived at the school of El-Ghazali the great sage of the east. El-Ghazli asked one of his disciples, El-Arif, to make the journey to Constantinople. At the court of Emperor El-Arif was to affect a cure. He asked what all remedies has been tried, what further cures were being contemplated, and then he made full examination of the patient. Then he asked for full court to be convened next day, where he was to make a declaration how to affect a cure. When all the nobles were gathered, Sheikh El-Arif said, 'It is better His Majesty better uses faith.' One cleric answered that it was not true that Emperor did not have faith but unfortunately it no longer had therapeutic effect. "In that case I am afraid to say that there is only one procedure for cure but it is so dreadful that I can't even mention the same". All noble men in the court prevailed on Sufi to at least let that be known for the sake of the health of Emperor. "The Emperor needed to be bathed in blood of several hundred children of age less then age of seven." The Sufi said. The entire court was stunned. It took quite a while for everyone to contemplate, if this cure is indeed worth a try. Several hundred innocent children may be slaughtered without any result. So many prospective future to be destroyed for the cure of the Emperor's disease. How to really effect taking away innocent lives of children from their mothers! After long debate it was however decided that The Emperors life is more important than several hundred children of age less than seven. The death of Emperor may result in destruction of kingdom itself from unknown enemies who can destroy many millions and effect slavery for thousand years to its people. All the mothers were ordered to send their children in a calendar month to come for the cure of Emperor's disease. This was most tormenting time for everyone and it needed great mental preparation. As the time ticked away and the great preparation was going on for collecting of children of right age, the emperor himself was very confused. The mothers of children all willed a cure for Emperor's malady before the day of blood bath. Slowly it dawned to emperor that his life is not really more important to cause death of several hundred children of age less than seven - he did not mind dying and did not need a cure! The Emperor soon recovered and was cured of his disease! El-Asafi explained, 'As he had no faith, emperor needed something equivalent to it, this is his single mindedness coupled with constructive desires of several hundred children's mothers for Emperors remission before the dreadful day - made the decision for emperor to effect the alternative that he can do without a cure. ' When this was conveyed to El-Ghazali, he said: 'An effect could be devised to operate within the TIME allotted to its attainment.' .... 'A Sufi knows how to administer the science of truth not only to his disciple but to ignoble men or infants knowing their inner condition after proper examination' - explained Khawja (the Head of) Maulana (Our Master) Bahaudin (Designer School). 12 LIMITATION IMPOSED BY DOGMA The great Sultan Mahmud was in the streets of Ghazna, his capital. he saw a poor porter struggling under the weight of a heavy stone which he was carrying on his back. Moved with sympathy, Muhmud called out to him, in royal command: "Drop that stone, porter." Immediately he was obeyed. The stone lay there on the middle of road for years to come creating obstacle to all passersby. Number of citizen interceded with the king to give a command for the stone to be taken away. Mahmud thought and replied: "That which has been done by command cannot be rescinded by an equal command, lest the people think imperial orders are motivated by whims. Let the stones remain there." The stone remained there for rest of Mahmud's life. Even when he is dead, from respect of royal commands, the stones were never removed. .... Mahmud was telling those who could understand to obey temporal authority, but to realize that those who rule by inflexible dogma can't be of complete use to humankind. 13 THE MAN WHOSE TIME WAS WRONG Abdul Qadir died in 1166. His shrine is in Bagdad. His descent is from Hassan the grandson of Mohammed. He is known as Sayedna, 'our prince'. When he lay in death bed a mysterious Arab delivered a letter – ‘Every man or animal has to taste death. From Lover to Beloved.’ There are many books written about him, Hiyat-i-Hazrat is one such. It began like this ….. ‘His appearance was formidable. One day only one disciple dared to ask him a question: “Can you not give us power to improve earth and the lot of the people on earth?” His face darkened and he replied: “I will do better, I shall give this power to future descendant of you, since at present there is no device exist to bring about such improvement in large scale. You shall be rewarded and your descendants shall be rewarded for your aspiration.” Following story is from Abdul Qadir: The man Whose Time Was Wrong. ............. Once upon a time, there was a rich merchant, who lived in Baghdad. He had a large house, many dhows, many properties, a large business network that extended as far as Indies. He gained this through own work, inheritance, being at the right time and at right place, and advice from Sultan of Cordoba – king of West. Something went wrong. A tyrant seized his land and property. His fleet to Indies met with typhoons. Disasters struck his family. Even his close friends lost the power to be in harmony with him, though both intended to have social relationship. He decided to journey to west and to meet his patron King of Spain – the Sultan. On his way, he was looted and captured by bandit and sold as slave. He escaped from slavery but without food and water and most miserable life only from a morsel of food given by dervishes. He looked miserable with sun burnt leather like body – villagers drove him away. Hardly could he have a gulp of fresh water. At last he reached the gate of Palace of Sultan. Even here he was treated horribly – he was pushed away by soldiers, chamberlains refused to talk with him. Anyhow he managed a minor job at King’s court. It took him three years to earn enough to buy a dress befitting to applying to Master of Ceremonies for admission to the royal presence. By now his behavior and manner was so bad that the Master put him on course and training to make worthy of present at court. All these he endured, and long last after three years he could enter King’s audience hall. The King instantly recognized him, called him and bade him sit in a place of honor beside him. “Your majesty, I suffered most terribly these past years. My lands were usurped, my ships lost along with my capital, for three years I battled against hunger, bandit, desert, people, language – I am here now and put myself in your mercy.” King turned to Chamberlin, “Give him hundred sheep.” King’s generosity was substantially less than what he hoped for. Anyway he withdrew after customary salutation. But no sooner he reached the scanty pasture with his 100 sheep, a plague struck and he lost all his sheep. He returned to court. King asked: ”How are sheep?” 14 “They died as soon as I got them to pasture.” King made a sign, and directed, “Give him 50 sheep.” Feeling ashamed, the shepherd now took the sheep to mountainside. But soon attacked by wild dogs appeared and chased them away over the mountain edge and all were killed. The merchant returned to King and told his story. This time, he was given 25 sheep. Without any more hope, the shepherd left for pasture with 25 sheep. As soon as he reached, each of his ewes gave birth to twins. Then again twins were born. These new twins were fat and well fleeced and made excellent eating. He now bought more sheep, they too initially skimpy grew strong and healthy; resembled the amazing new breed that he was rearing. After three years he returned to King’s court splendidly attired with report of the sheep prospered in his stewardship. “Are you now successful shepherd?” the monarch asked. “Yes indeed.” “Very well, yonder is the kingdom of Seville whose throne is my gift, go and let it be known that I make you king of Seville.” King touched him on shoulder with ceremonial axe. “Why didn’t you make me king when I first came to you?” the merchant burst out. King said: “On that day you took the sheep up the mountain and lost them, had you taken control of kingdom of Seville, there would not have been one stone on top another today.” 15 MARUF This Dervish tale that has appeared in Arabian Nights stories: Maruf lived in Cairo with his wife Fatima. This hag treated him so badly, repaying every good action of his with a very bad one plus loads of abuse. Maruf looked upon her as an example of inexplicable contrariness of the world. Bowed down with sense of real injustice, driven to extremity of despair, he fled to ruined monastery near the city where he plunged himself to prayer and supplication, calling out incessantly: ”Lord, I beg thee for a means of release, send me at immense distance so that I can find release and hope.” He continued to plead for several hours when an apparition came through the wall – it has huge height and strange appearance. This is Abdaal – human beings who have attained power inconceivable for ordinary human beings. “I am Abdel-Makan, servant of this place, what do you ask of me?” Maruf told him his problems. Abdel took him in his back instantly flew to a far city on the borders of China, a rich and beautiful place. At the sudden of Maruf in the market place dressed strangely, people gathered around Maruf asking him question. They started jeering and throwing sticks and stone at him. When he was still hackled, a merchant rode by and dispersed the crowed saying: “Have shame! A stranger is guest, bound to us by sacred bonds of hospitality and worthy of protection.” He is Ali. He explained to Maruf, how he has progressed from rags to riches in this strange city of Ikhtiyar where merchants tend believe and not skeptic, if you tell them story of riches they would believe you and lend you more, but if you tell them you are poor you would not receive any alms. So he told them stories of his wealth on its way and borrowed money, judiciously investing that he made more money and returned the borrowed money – and that is how he became successful. Ali took Maruf to number of wealthy merchants who bought Maruf story of caravan with priceless riches on their way and favored Maruf with substantial loans. Maruf however unlike Ali was not business minded and gifted away to poor and needy. Months passed but no caravan of Maruf arrived, all merchants worried complained to King about Maruf. King called Maruf and decided to find out the truth. He set a trap, he placed a priceless jewel in the hands of Marut and asked him to take it if that be worthy of him. Maruf returned the jewel saying his caravan loads far worthier and valuable wealth he does not need this. King got much moved with greed. He decided to marry his only daughter to Maruf and asked the merchants to hold the peace still Maruf’s caravan arrives. However his Wazir advised king that Maruf is bluffer. King ignored this since he knew Wazir wanted to marry his daughter. Maruf when told about this he told Wazir to tell king that until his caravan arrives he can’t provide for his princess-wife marriage must be postponed. Hearing this King opened his treasury to Maruf asking him to take away whatever need to make worthy of him of a suitable way of life consonant of a royalson-in-law. Never any one had witnessed such an extravagant marriage. Riches doled out to any even who just heard about this wedding. At the wedding night Maruf was troubled, ‘I am troubled that I have to 16 account for this to your father, I have taken so much from him’, he said to princess. Princess replied, “Think nothing of it, when your caravan arrives all shall be well.’ Wazir renewed again his agitation asked king to find out about mystery of caravan through the princess at an opportune moment. When they lay in one another’s arm, princess asked Maruf about missing caravan. Maruf decided to speak the truth: “Wazir is right but his words due to his greed. Your father too gave way yourself to me out of greed. But why did you consent to marry me?” Princess said: “you are my wedded husband and I shall not disgrace you. Take this 50000 gold pieces and flee this country, when settled you send message for me and I shall join you wherever you are.” Maruf fled the country dressed as slave at dead of night. Princess Dunia was called by king and Wazir for her report. She said: “When I was about to ask Maruf, a strange thing happened, Ten Mamelukes, dressed most magnificently, arrived beneath the palace window carrying a letter from chief of Maruf’s caravan. The letter said that they have been delayed by numerous attacks by beduines, fifty of guards of 500 have been killed, and a quantity of merchandise – two hundred camel loads have been carried off.” “What did Maruf say?” king and Wazir asked. “He said very little this loss is nothing however he at once rode off to meet the caravan and bring it back to us.” Thus she bought time. Maruf did not know where he was going, he arrived in a place where a peasant was ploughing, he sais “Be my guest King’s slave” and he left for home to fetch some food for Maruf. Maruf touched by his kindness thought of helping the peasant with bit of ploughing. He had not done many furrows when his plough hit a stone. He pulled it away and saw a flight of stairs that lead to a chamber filled with treasures. Maruf discovered a crystal box with a ring, he rubbed the ring and strange apparition appeared, “I am Father of happiness and what can I do for you?” Maruf the cobbler ordered the treasure to be brought above the ground and loaded into a huge caravan. Peasant presently returned with barley and pulse. Maruf ate some and gave him gold and claim a greater reward later. Maruf sent messenger to city of his father-in-law to announce his arrival in advance. The princess did not know what truth is. She suspected Maruf lied to her. King attacked the Wazir for ever suggesting Maruf is pauper. Ali thought caravan is the work of princess in order to save Maruf. All the merchants were happy, so is all poor and needy getting so much gifts from Maruf. Wazir did not believe all this since never any rich ever gives away the manner Maruf is giving away. He caught Maruf in the garden plied him with music and wine, got the secret of magic ring from him, rubbed and got jinn to transfer Maruf to desert, and presented himself to king and overthrew him, and even tried to seduce the princess. The princess however, when Wazir came to her, got the ring from his finger and got the Father of happiness and deposed him to dungeon, and fetched back Maruf. She freed King, and Maruf became the Wazir. They lived happy thereafter. The king died; Maruf succeeded him. He had a son. But Princess became sick, she left both ring and child to Maruf to take care of them and died. 17 One night Maruf woke up with a start and found Fatima his first wife is lying beside him. She told her after Maruf left her she got reduced to begging and unending grief. One day she was crying out loud when a jinn appeared and told her the adventures of Maruf. She asked him to take her to Ikhtiyar and she brought there in speed of light. Maruf explained his position but warned her to behalf herself to be a queen. She did likewise but hated the little prince. One day when Maruf went to sleep she took the magical ring, but little prince saw that and he threw his tiny sword and killed her. Maruf sent for peasant who was responsible for Father of Happiness Jinn. Maruf made him Wazir and married his daughter. There after they all lived happily and success. ….. If you have been following and reading this story to the end, and then you would observe that this story unlike any story from west has no Moral. This only depicts series of cause and effect relationship and that is feature of some Sufi literature. This is markedly different kind of teaching Sufi masters wish the listener or reader to have – there is no lesson to learn from life. 18 WISDOM FOR SALE A man named Saifulmuluk spent half his life in seeking truth. He read all books on ancient wisdom, he traveled to every known or unknown countries hear what every spiritual leader had to say. He spent days in working and nights in contemplation of great mysteries. One day he heard of great poet Ansari. He packed his bag and headed for Heart. At the door he found it is written, ‘Knowledge is sold here’. This must be a mistake or to dissuade idle curiosity seeker, thinking thus he stepped in. Inside Ansari is bent over in age was writing poem. ‘Have you come to buy knowledge?’ Ansari asked. Saiful nodded. ‘Give me all the money you have.’ Saiful produced 100 silver coins. ‘With only this much, you can have only three pieces of knowledge!’ ‘Do you really mean that, I thought you are humble dedicated man?’ ‘We live in the world surrounded by its material facts,’ said the sage, ‘because I know certain things that others do not know, I have to spend money, among other things, to be of service where a kind word or ‘baraka’ is not valued’. He took the silver, ‘Listen well. First one is: A small cloud signals danger.’ ‘But is this knowledge? It does not tell me nature of man, or ultimate truth or for that matter, place of human beings in the world’, asked Saifulmuluk. ‘If you are going to decide what I might tell you, you may better take your money and go away. What is the big use of knowledge about a man’s place in the world, if the man is dead?’ Saifulmuluk was silenced. “Second one is: if you find a bird, a cat, and a dog in one place, get hold of them and look them after, till the end.” “This may have deep metaphysical meaning,” Saiful thought, “it may get clear if I think upon it long enough.” “The last: when you have experienced certain things which seem irrelevant, keeping your faith in the earlier advices, then and only then, a door will open for you, ‘Enter that door’”. Saifulmuluk wanted to stay little longer with this baffling sage, but he was pushed out of the door rather roughly by Ansari. Saiful kept wandering and went to Kashmir to study under another teacher. When he was travelling through central Asia again, in Bokhara in a market place, he saw a man leading away a bird a cat and a dog where an auction was taking place. Saiful thought, ’had I not spent so much time in Kashmir then I would have been able to buy these animals, it appears that they are part of my destiny. But then he thought, he is yet to notice ‘Any Small Cloud.’ But succession order need not be Time ordered! Anyway he looked for the man who bought the animals, and if the animals are still in one place. This man’s name was Ashikikhuda. He only bought the animals out of sympathy that they were cooped up in the auctioneer’s room for several weeks waiting for a buyer. He really had no use for them and was very happy selling them to Saifulmuluk. 19 Saiful settled in Bokhara since it was no more practical travel with animals. He became a wool spinner in a factory. Three years passed. He became master spinner and became respectable member of the community along with animals. One day he walked out skirt of the town he saw a strange looking tiny cloud hovering over the horizon, his memory was jogged, the first piece of advice of Ansari came into his mind –“A small cloud signals danger!” Saiful returned immediately to his house collected his animal and fled to arrive at Isfahan almost penniless. Some days later he heard Bokhara was invaded by an army and all were slaughtered dead. And the words of Ansari came to his mind, ‘what is the use of knowledge for a man if he is dead?’ The people of Isfahan were not enamored by wool spinner or his animals – Saiful lived in extreme poverty. He could take no more. Out of hunger, out of desperation, he started crying, ‘You who have been changed, O holy ones, please come to my aid, I am reduced to a state that through my efforts I can’t live any longer, or provide for my animals.’ He lay there between sleeping and awakening, and had a dream as if it was true. He saw a stream and a tree, and a crevice into which a ring rolled into emitting many colored intermittent lights. In the morning he was sane enough to look for the stream and the tree. He found one similar to his vision, and there was a hole near the tree, putting a stick inside the hole he could get hold of the ring. Washing and polishing it, he realized its magical power. He made a small hut and started living with his pet and many wild animals. He became old and were known as Saif Baba. Many people passed by and tried to teach him many things but he waited for the end as predicted by Ansari his master. Staying with the animals he learnt there language too. One day he heard the sparrow telling him, ‘You are so closed that that no one can open your door. So many people have tried in the past but failed.’ Saif Baba was surprised that a sparrow talking to him. He asked ‘how do you know? My master told me to wait till the end. And I do not see any door opening either.’ The bird said, ‘you are wrong, all these travelers were sent by the same source Khoja Ansari himself – your source of knowledge, to see if you have acquired enough insight to follow them.’ ‘This I don’t believe, if that be so can you tell me, even with advantage I have over animals, how come I do not see what you see?’ Saif Baba asked. “That is simple, the animals said, you are so accustomed to seeing in one and only one particular way with your success of finding two truths delivered by your master Ansari, that you do not see any other way; your blindness while it is visible to us all the time, is invisible to you!’ ‘So I could have found the Door of the third piece of Advice long ago, if I were properly attuned to it?’ “Yes,” said the dog joining the discussion, in fact the door has opened at least a dozen times in the past, but you did not see, and we did. But because we are animal we could not tell you.” “Then how could you tell me now?” “Because lately, you have become more human, and now you have only one chance, since you are already very old.” Saif Baba thought, “They have no right to say this to me, I only provide for them. But if they are wrong does not matter, however if they are right I can hardly take any chance because of my overcoming age.” 20 He then enquired with good spirit that can be called by the great ring of Solomon that he found in the hole below the tree. The Spirit however answered that he is forbidden to tell any remedy for his blindness but Saif Baba’s disease has a name called “Permanent hidden prejudice” that rules Saif Baba’s thoughts and makes it difficult for him to progress in The Way. One day a dervish pitched a tent on Saif Baba’s door step. Saif Baba approached him. Dervish said, “I am not interested in hearing your story of Master Ansari, cloud, animals, and even your magic ring. Go away I have no time for them and your useless talks”. “What can I do, I feel responsible for animals, and confusion about myself, and there is no more guidance in my three pieces of Advice.” Saif Baba said. “You have talked sincerely, hand over the animals to me, you have made a beginning, and I shall tell you the answer.” “You ask too much, I do not know you’ how can I trust you?’ Saif Baba asked. “You have revealed your concern, your proprietorship of your animal, and doubt about me. If you judge me with emotion or logic, you can’t benefit from me. Go away; verily my name is ‘Darwaja’”. Now Darwaja means door, Saif Baba thought – ‘could he be the Door Master Ansari talked about!’ “Could You be the Door I am seeking, I am not sure?” “Go away; I am not interested in your speculation. Don’t you see that first two advices were for your mind, and third piece can only be understood, only when you perceive that they were meant for your MIND!” After two more years of confusion and anxiety, Saif Baba suddenly realized the truth. He called his animals and let them go, “you are on your own now. This is the END.” A door opened in the tree beside the stream, he walked over threshold, and he saw answers are written about life and death, about mortality and humanity, about knowledge and ignorance; they have plagued him all his life. ‘Attachment to externals’, said voice within the cavern, ‘ has held you back all these years, take here only part of the wisdom still open to you.’ ………………………….. This is favorite Sufi theme – ‘Truth is trying to manifest itself’ again and again to humanity. It appears to each human in many guises again and again, they are difficult to penetrate, and at first sight may have no connection with each other. Only development of ‘special perception’ enables a man to be aware of this unseen process. 21 SURE TO MAKE YOU SMILE Mulla every one knows came from country where fruit is a fruit, meat is meat, and curry is never eaten. Having newly descended from Kafiristan, Mullah was plodding the dusty Indian road. soon thirst took over, "I must find somewhere that good fruit to be had". No sooner the words formed in his head he saw a benevolent looking man under the shade of a tree with a basket in front of him piled high with juicy red fruits. Taking two tiny copper coins from the end of his turban Mulla handed them over to the man. Without a word the man gave the whole basket to Mullah, for this must be a cheap king of fruit. Nasiruddin sat down in the place vacated by the man and started eating the fruits. Within a few seconds his mouth started burning, tears streamed through his cheeks, fires were on his throat. Mullah went on eating. An hour or two passed when an Afghan hill man came by, Mulla hailed him, "Brother this infidel fruits must have originated in the very mouth of Sheitan!" "Fool, stop eating those, never heard of chillis of Hindustan? Death will surely claim a victim before sun is down!" Waking up the day you are TRULY happy - you shall know that I (the devil) am no more and you don't need to send WORDS OF HOPE no more. 31 LORENZ CURVE Couple of years back I found out that some of our esteemed University Professors of Economics do not understand what Lorenz curve is, what possible shapes it can have, and its relationship with income distribution or wealth distribution and its significance in relation to Politics, Governance, Banks, Money printing, or Bail out. [I do not invite any debate or counter points - I care less if you read my writings or not. This is strictly one way communication] Lorenz curves whether income or wealth shows distribution of the same over a nation. The curve has to lie strictly below the hypotenuse of the right angle triangle with unit base and unit height. The area between the hypotenuse and the curve is the measure of income distribution. it can be zero minimum, maximum being half (area of the triangle, when one individual own everything, or has all income). 'Zero' is healthy, 'Half' is unhealthy. In US it is nearly 'Half' in fact it has crossed theoretical limit long ago!!!! How could this happen for a democracy is unbelievable. Does it mean that out of 100 person, only one person works and earn while 99 persons are being just lazy and do not work. No this has been achieved systematically, by the system we have developed by legislation year after year. When Government decides to print money and give it Bank - it gives loan. Banks are supposed return back this loan. However they don't. The money leaves the Bank and accumulates in individuals possessions who run this outfits. However they protected by legislation, and further protected by Government who writes off this Loan and their inability. They are further given loans to recover their loss. No money that goes out of Bank really gets to borrower - borrower only gets some short time material possession - like a place stay - a car to roam around. They simply do not belong to them but mortgaged to bank. While this be so when Banks are bailed out, or loaned money from Government - it is the people of the country is giving equal share to the Bank not out of choice but by virtue of elected officials. When Bank's are bailed out, the entire nation goes negative and owes the loan instead of Banks. Lorenz curve drops below X-axis in the negative Y-axis for most of 0 to 1 of x-axis till it shoots up to 1. Thus income distribution of USA has crossed the theoretical limit of 1/2 for quite some time now. As far As Income distribution goes. What about wealth distribution? Wealth is dynamic changes over time - it is land mass, production, value addition, depreciation - but for Lorenz curve it is again One (1). How this wealth is distributed over the entire population? Michelle Bachman has called on the press to investigate "anti-American" members of Congress. Rand Paul called the president "un-American" for trying to hold BP accountable for the damage to the Gulf region. Oliver North says that President Obama 37 has a "core-philosophy of being anti-American." The appropriately named Dick Morris says that Obama is the "first anti-American president." This isn't exactly a new coinage. The un and anti have been pulled out many times to fling against those who have in the past protested some aspect of national policy, especially those who've failed to cheer loudly enough for war. But these days it's not so much generic hippy punching that brings out the twins. Instead they're generally fired over the bow of anyone the right sees as deviating from the one true path -- that of the unrestrained free market. President Obama is a frequent target because of his many real and imagined slights against the market. After all, while the current president didn't start the bank bailout (even if many Americans think he did), he did support at least mild regulation of Wall Street run wild, and he spent all that money on "shovel ready" infrastructure products even though it meant running up the debt, he did invest in the failing auto industry, and he... um, well, he's done lots of other socialist things too. They're sure of it. Barack Obama has even promoted the kind of America where children give away lemonade (really, that's what's wrong with America -- too much free lemonade). Conservatives pull out the "anti-American" tag in going after every intrusion of the government into the economy. They leave little doubt that America and the "free market" are synonymous. But here't here's the thing: there is an American eonomic system, and while defining what it is takes a little time, defining what it's not is simple. It's not the free market. The American economic system -- the system defined by George Washington and Alexander Hamilton -came directly out of the challenges faced by our nation. America, as a new country, was at a huge disadvantage to Europe when it came to the ability to produce manufactured goods. American-made goods at the time were often lesser quality, more expensive, or both when compared to products coming from European factories. Both men were well aware of free market principles (On the Wealth of Nations was published in 1776) and there were those among the founders that pushed Washington to run the country along a purely market-driven philosophy. An unregulated free market backed up by the gold standard was the basis of the "English System," and the British had enjoyed more than a little success. Washington and Hamilton might have emulated the nation they had just defeated on the battlefield, but that wasn't the path they chose. Instead, steep tariffs were imposed on imported goods. These inflated the price of products from European factories and allowed American makers to both capture more of the market and turn a higher profit. With that money, American factories were enlarged and became more numerous. There was another problem at the time -- states were nearly bankrupt. The cost of financing the War of Independence had emptied the coffers, and many states were having trouble paying off their loans. At the same time, hundreds of state and local banks were operating under different rules, different rates, even different currencies. The country was awash in speculators taking advantage of differences in exchange rates and shipping costs to rack up fortunes while farmers and craftsmen suffered. Think Wall Street was crazy in 2007? Imagine a country with dozens of different currencies and no one regulating the exchange rates. Now imagine how many people learned to game the system. To address this, Hamilton proposed that the federal government bail-out the states and regulate the financial markets. There was only one problem with this idea -- the federal government was also in debt, and banks were unlikely to loan them money that would be used to regulate those same institutions. Hamilton had an answer for that. He proposed that the US government become the largest stockholder in a bank. Not an existing bank, a new bank. The government would create this bank as a private 38 company, but the government would own the majority of stock. The government would also lay down the rules for the bank, including limits on who could buy stock and what type of investments the bank could make. From this new bank, the government would borrow the money to pay off the states and address federal needs. The first and largest federal need? The $2 million it would take to buy stock in the new bank. The solution? The new bank loaned it to us. Got that? We made the bank, the bank then loaned us the money to buy the bank. Even paying back the loan was more than we could afford, so Hamilton made a proposal popular with politicians in any age, a "sin tax." In this case, it was a tax on imported and domestic spirits (to see how well that went, just look up the Whiskey Rebellion). With the money from the new government-owned bank, the US could take care of its own debts and those of the states. The government could regulate currency and set rules on trading. It also started in on a series of large infrastructure projects -- roads, canals, and public buildings. That, brothers and sisters, was the American economic system. Those who worry that we've wandered too far from the vision of the founding fathers might want to remember that in George Washington's first term, the government was involved in: ï‚· ï‚· ï‚· ï‚· ï‚· selectively restricting imports bailing out debts of states being the majority owner of a private company clamping down on fiscal speculation executing a "stimulus plan" of infrastructure projects And all of this goodness was paid for by new taxes. The American school of economics was founded on these ideas: selective tariffs, government regulation of banks, and strong investment in infrastructure. Under later presidents a fourth plank was added to this platform -- investment in public education. Within a space of decades, the American school of economics gave us... America. America the economic power that matched, then surpassed any of its European rivals. The success of American economics was so clear that Lincoln's economic advisor, could write these words... Two systems are before the world;... One looks to increasing the necessity of commerce; the other to increasing the power to maintain it. One looks to underworking the Hindoo, and sinking the rest of the world to his level; the other to raising the standard of man throughout the world to our level. One looks to pauperism, ignorance, depopulation, and barbarism; the other to increasing wealth, comfort, intelligence, combination of action, and civilization. One looks towards universal war; the other towards universal peace. That other system, the sinking, pauper-ignorance-war making system? That was the English System, the system we now call "the free market." Of course, the American school of economics was never followed by 100% of Americans. It's fortunes waxed and waned, taking huge hits at the start of the 20th century -- particularly under Woodrow Wilson. These days, we're taught to believe that protectionism was one of the causes of the 1929 stock 39 market crash, but the truth is it was leaving the old system that caused a unsupportable increase in stock prices. Reduction of tariffs, easing of regulation, and the end of the National Bank system moved money away from internal investments and toward international trade and speculation. The SmootHawley Tariff Act was signed into being after the crash in an attempt to restore some fragment of the old system. It's not clear what, if any, effect these tariffs had, but under the New Deal funds were diverted from speculation back to infrastructure -- pulling America up from the depression. These days we're also fed the idea that in this "flat" world, any attempt to return to the American system would be disastrous. We couldn't possibly impose tariffs as post-war Japan did until it was operating at a trade surplus. We couldn't possibly deal that way with our "partners" such as China -where American automobiles face steep tariffs so steep that their products are uncompetitive unless they partner with Chinese-owned companies. The evidence of the last century is that nations practicing a "free trade" system, always export jobs to countries practicing the American system. But hey, America can't possibly use the American system. It would be... un-American. The free market system was not the original economic system of America. It wasn't the system that brought us to international power, not the system that carried us through World War II, not written into our Constitution in any way. In fact, one of the primary powers granted federal authority is the regulation of the economy. It was clearly understood that economic anarchy was incompatible with democracy. In saying that any move against an absolute free market is un-American, conservatives are declaring that Washington was un-American, Hamilton was un-American, Lincoln was un-American. The truth is that the free market is opposed to the American economic system, but America the country has no predefined economic system. It's not hard-coded that we follow the American system, the free market system, or any other system. One of the goals of the constitution was to give us the flexibility to adapt economic policy to the times. Pretending that we must remain wedded to one system no matter what (even when that system has as long a record of failure as the so-called free market) -- that's really anti-American. 40 AN AMERICAN BOOK In my cruise through American Literature I read voraciously whatever I came across or suggested. I am not claiming wisdom but I got acquainted with what I thoughts – AMERICAN. Decades later I came to read American literature again along with my children in their schools and college curriculum and I sadly realized what I thought American Literature – is not American in America. Repeatedly any number of times one is taught Anne’s Diary (70 plus years old written by a child) or American Constitution (rewritten every day by many many adults). Once upon a time I used to spend lot of time in book stores – now even when I am waiting for many hours in a Airport I do not by mistake get into a book stores. The profession of law is said to be a noble one, and old dodderers like me have been brought up on this fable. Yes – it is only a fable. Because after being 59 years in active practice. I am convinced that there are far too many dents in the practising lawyer’s self-styled image of nobility. The American lawyer Marc Galanter when he was last in India a month ago told us about the prevalent joke in the US: about lawyers. The joke is in the form of a question – answer. The question is: “What do you say to 50000 lawyers dropped to the bottom of the deepest ocean? And the answer is: “Well, that’s good beginning”. That is what most people think about practising lawyers in India and in America. I do honestly believe that the activity of judging cases is far nobler. This is why I was delighted when the Chief Justice of Delhi told me at a dinner that we both attended sometime ago that a course was being introduced in the Delhi National Law School University for a Post-graduate Diploma in “Judging and Court Management” – I am quite excited because it is a novel idea. I believe it opens a niche or entry to enthusiastic and scholarly young men and women of the law straight from the law colleges to the Bench. I have known for many years the Chief Justice of Delhi and your Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ranbir Singh. Excellence has been their motto. In fact Ajit Shah I have known ever since he was a practising lawyer in Bombay and for the many long years that he was sitting as a Judge of the Bombay High Court. I have always been of the firm opinion that he is a role-model for all Judges and I say this in the presence of the Chief Justice of India, because I know he does not disagree with this assessment. The fact that Justice A.P. Shah is not yet in the Supreme Court is a God-send to the Judges and lawyers of the Delhi High Court but it is a matter of disappointment for the rest of us who have known him personally and this is only because of the vagaries of our present system of judicial appointments. The primacy for recommending appointments is no longer with the Chief Justice – You must all know that the present system of appointment has a hoary past because many Chief Justices ago, the Government of the time whose party commanded more than a two-thirds majority in Parliament had said that Judges had to reflect the philosophy of the Government in power and only “forward looking” Judges would henceforth be appointed to the High Judicial Offices of State. Human nature being what it is, some Judges stepped out of line and offered their services saying that they were highly forward looking - and it was to reverse this trend of jumping-on-the-bandwagon that was responsible for the somewhat strained and difficult-to-explain interpretation of Article 124 in what has come to be known as the Second Judges Case: The decision said that Judges had to be recommended not by the CJI but by a triumvirate consisting of the CJI and two senior most Judges, and any such recommendation that was not accepted by the Government was to be treated as being vitiated by mala fides. This is how it all began: and it was only because, again many CJI’s ago, that when one of them who shall be nameless asserted primacy and wanted a particular nominee appointed which neither his colleagues in the collegium nor Government wanted – that a Presidential Reference to the Supreme Court was conceived to gain time – ostensibly to interpret the ruling in the Second Judges case – But the ruling was 52 not disturbed except that the collegium of three only became (in the third Judges case) a collegium of five. But experience has shown (and you will pardon me Chief Justice for saying so) that collegiums whether of 3 or 5 have not worked. A most glaring instance has been that of the Chief Justice of a High Court, the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh who was in line for appointment many vacancies ago - at least two years ago - but could not or would not be recommended only because (and this is so well known as to be almost indisputable) – only because one member of the colleguim steadfastly refused to accept him for appointment as Judge of the Supreme Court. So he was over-looked – not once not twice but three times. The moment that member of the collegium retired at age 65, the newly constituted collegium immediately recommended the Chief Justice of M.P. and he has been rightly appointed by the President as a Judge of the Supreme Court and is to be sworn in tomorrow morning. This instance speaks volumes for the current judicial appointment procedure – making more comment superfluous. Since Government and the Judges will not have an Independent Commission for appointment of Judges, I would rather have the old position restored than the uncertain present one: viz. better that the Primacy of the Chief Justice of India be restored when Judges were appointed by the Government of the Day in consultation with the CJI: When he was not mandated to only consult with the senior-most but could ask anyone of his colleagues. The reason why I got this choleric thought off my chest is because I hate to speak behind anyone’s back. Hence I thought it best to proclaim what I and many members of the Bar think – here in the presence of the CJI, and not in his absence. Ultimately you Post-Graduates Diploma seekers are going to be Judges and you must know what is the current situation and current thinking. This is why I have let off a little steam right at the beginning. Now the great question - can you be a good Judge if you haven’t practised the law? Well Chief Justice Venkatachaliah thought – not - and he was a great Chief Justice – When I mentioned to him the name of a very eminent academician Prof. Madhava Menon for a seat on the highest Court – our Constitution itself provides that an eminent jurist may be so appointed who is not necessarily a practising lawyer - Chief Justice Venkatachaliah demurred and said that without practice at the Bar it is just not possible to have a good Judge. That was many years ago. Today – I am not so sure. This experiment which the University has now embarked on – is in my opinion is a good experiment-almost as good if not a better than putting 50000 lawyers at the bottom of the deepest ocean. But, as the saying goes, the goodness of the pudding is in the eating, and four or five years of intense tuition will give us the ultimate verdict - whether we can produce good Judges from intelligent law-students who have not practised the law. Your training programme would have to be intense and sustained and you must work hard. Spend one hour a day in the Delhi High Court and one hour on Mondays and Fridays in the Supreme Court and you will witness the enormous work-load. Abroad in civil law countries they have career judges (as they are called) and the system has worked well in European countries. I don’t see why we in India cannot succeed. I must complement the University on the subjects that have been chosen for this course. They are well thought out and I particularly like the course set out in paper 1.2 and 1.3 – intensive functional study of civil procedure, evidence and rules of Court and the study of Criminal procedure, evidence and rules of Court. The three great Codes of our legal system are the CPC the Cr.PC and the law of evidence: and no one can say he knows that law unless he or she has mastered these foundational under pinnings of our legal system. Everything else – including constitutional law you can pick up if you are studious, but CPC and Cr.PC and Evidence you must know – yes, all its provisions you must know at instant recall: this is why District Judges who come to the High Court, and then some of them are brought to the Supreme Court, are highly regarded for their grounding in the three Great Codes. 53 Believe me, generally speaking practising lawyers who become judges are not that familiar with the three Great Codes – because many lawyers during the past 25 years have hardly conducted a trial civil or criminal: and it is in trials that a practising lawyer can show his true mettle. The judge who sits in such trials has to be more proficient: than the lawyer appearing before him. There is a book recently published in America called “Life without Lawyers” with a sub-title: “Liberating Americans from too much Law.” American Society is becoming excessively legalised, and I believe Indian Society and the Indian Courts in pay too little attention in their decision making to directive principles of State policy which is at the heart of our Constitution. Too much – far too much – has been spoken and written about: Easy Accessibility of Justice for the Poor. But far too little has been done to ensure it. Does the fault lies with the law or with those who operate it? The Answer is a bit of both. The opening words of the Constitution – “We the People” - tell us at the start, who this Constitution is for? Those who read the newspapers every morning can be pardoned for exclaiming “My God - what people”. In a pluralistic society like ours in a vast sub-continent like this – in a land of a million mutinies – as V.S. Naipaul describes it – WHO (REALLY) ARE THE PEOPLE? For me, they are all typified by that great cartoonist Laxman’s “Common Man” – whose 8-feet high bronze statue President K.R. Narayanan unveiled in Pune some years ago – the statute has been extolled as the “worlds’ tallest metal statue of a cartoon character”. Laxman’s Common man typifies – as no other single manifestation does – the quizzical doubts of the person for whom our great document of Governance is written: each generation throws up its Common Man; a generation being defined as that body of individuals born about the same period: a generation as you know is usually computed at 30 years. By this computation there have been two generations since 1950 and if we are to show the present generation (typified by the Common Man) this document of Governance or tell him about it, he is bound to ask. “Tell-me-what has it done for us? How are we better off?” These are the most difficult of questions, that you – the Judges under training, the new Judges of tomorrow, must ponder over because, only a clear answer to them will help us in our very difficult – seemingly impossible quest – viz. accessibility of justice for the common man. I like to I think however that we would have been able to comprehend the poor (and done something about them) if we had followed the path laid for us by the Founding Fathers. Every Constitution must have an ideal and purpose, and the more I get acquainted with this longest constitution in the world the more I believe that its heart is in Part-IV. If we look for the reason why we have floundered, over five decades why we have not been able to successfully work the Constitution – despite the efforts of politicians, lawyers, commissions and committees – it is only because we have not had the will to implement the directive principles of State policy – principles declared fundamental in the governance of the country. The Constitution had 54 imposed a duty on the State to apply these principles in making laws but alas they had precluded Courts from enforcing them. (Article 37) I like to think that if the framers of the Constitution had foreseen the pro-active judiciary that we have today (and which we have had for some time) – a judiciary which tells the Government how to distribute excess food, what crops to grow and what not to grow, what economic projects are good for the country and which are not, What fuel should be used in the engines of our motor-cars and scooters! – if the framers had in fact envisaged or contemplated this – then they would not only have been aghast and surprised – I believe that the Constitution Framers (adaptable as they were) would have promptly made Part-IV enforceable by Courts! However, as the role of the judiciary was perceived in the nineteen forties and fifties these directive principles were not conceived to be enforceable: and so they were left out in the cold by the Judiciary – ignored by all Governments that we have had since then. Legislative and executive wings of State – the elected representatives of the people – were expected to provide for the welfare of the people. And they have miserably failed. I believe they have miserably failed not because our laws (Central and State) do not take into account Part-IV of the Constitution, but simply because making laws is not enough: applying and enforcing laws which is the primary duty of the State - requires a certain idealism which the Constitution commanded – a certain awareness of Constitutional norms - which alas over the years we the people – or rather, them, the people in governance - have totally lost. It is to me a matter of great regret that our Constitution which borrowed from a host of written documents around the world did not choose to adopt those fine evocative words in that renowned democratic declaration of modern times – the declaration of independence adopted by the American colonies – this is how the material part read: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Note the emphasis on the Pursuit of Happiness – that is and should be the prime aim and object of every Government. A start has been made on Easy Access to Justice by the establishment of the Consumer Forums – where there are no Court fees and where lawyers are not encouraged. But the general condition of the litigant in civil Courts and particularly in the criminal Courts is abysmal. A book by my young friend Justice S. Murlidhar, “Law, Poverty and Legal Aid”, contains a foreword by the great protagonist of Legal Aid, Justice V R Krishna Iyer. In it Krishna Iyer says that: “The law is what law does and so justice is what justice does.” It is on this not very secure foundation that the life and liberty of what he calls “the little Indian” depends. Unfortunately the law does little for the little Indian, and Justice does even less. We need more civil society initiatives, such as encouraging law students who have still not lost their idealism to represent litigants in small cases particularly in the criminal Courts. They have experimented with this, with some success, in the Philippines. Students have the ability to critique the system and somehow paralegals, as contrasted with the black-coated fraternity, are unspoiled by the system. And we need judges with – compassion - not ignorant judges with compassion because that produces palm-tree justice, but competent erudite judges with compassion: to administer justice not ad hoc justice but justice on some principle – or as the Constitution says: justice according to law. In Murlidhar’s book the author criticizes the system where at the end of a long criminal litigation where the person emerges as innocent – which happens to be the case in 90 per cent of the criminal cases which go into the criminal justice system - he is not compensated for the incarceration – not even 55 awarded the costs of a long tortuous litigation. There is a very important passage in the book and it reads: “The mere provision of legal services may not alter the way in which the poor are treated within the criminal justice system without fundamental changes in the behaviour of the personnel manning the institutions that comprise the criminal justice system.” Yes we need more and more inspired Judges to push civil and criminal cases along to a final conclusion – and I look to you young men and women who will soon be in the driving seat of the law. Remember we need Judges with compassion to appreciate the plight of the poor who are caught up in the tentacles of the system: judges with humility and an ability to learn. All of you are going to be Judges and if you want to learn how to write good judgments you can certainly read the current judgments of the day for substance – but I would recommend that you avoid it for style: the Judges of today tell me that they have no time to write good judgments. But that’s all wrong. You have time to write good judgments if you find the time to write good judgments. If instead of themselves taking up 80 or 90 matters on Mondays and Friday: there is a less number it was only 20 or 30 when I first came to the Supreme Court in 1972. Far better that the knock on the doors the SLPs - are left to be determined by a retired coterie of Judges so that there would be time for the permanent Judges to think better and write better judgments. But alas, the present system imposes an enormous strain on all sitting Judges. If you wish to write good judgments there is an article which appeared in the Bombay Law Reporter Journal section in 1949 – yes, sixty years ago – on the art of writing to judgments by Lord McMillan, a Privy Councillor. Since judgments of the Supreme Court continue to be written in English and even if this changes and you begin or you are made to write your judgments in Hindi – the national language – I would earnestly request you all to read this article and if you cannot find it you can always ask me and I will be ready to send it to you. Alexander Solzhenitsyn, the great Russian critic of the Communist system of Government (when it was unpopular and dangerous to be its critic) had once said something very significant: “A man used to moving about the streets riding in a motor-car” (he had said) “can never understand a pedestrian – even at a symposium or at a forum” and if I may add in a Court. People in the upper echelons of Society and the people who administer the law, the bureaucrats and officials are simply out of touch with the common man and the common people. You young people coming directly from academia to the Bench must never lose your concern for the common man. And always be enthusiastic about your work. Remember what Emerson said: nothing great is ever achieved without enthusiasm”. And I wish you all the success in the world. I enormously enjoyed reading this. As a common man I left India 10 years back and did not go back to see the changes. I did not give up my citizenship, since I do not like to be any other person but common man elsewhere. I have become a thermometer or barometer of the atmosphere I am in - I do not belch out siren asking for help since no common man in anywhere in the world has any help. I do not enjoy but I know I have to enjoy prevalently uncommon happenings that shall be happening that is enjoyable. 56 In a way it was perhaps my mistake to leave India, thinking that I shall perhaps be better off in a country from which we are exporting poison to destroy our many thousand years old stable system that could not be dominated upon by invasions after invasions. But greed is such a contagious disease it catches up with supersonic fit. While collapse of US system shall happen when nature intervenes - since it produces food so much that state gives money not to produce and sinks produce into sea. The system shall break down if there a change of season and a dry or a wet spell. The only other thing America needs is injected poverty or discrimination so that they can get adequate number of teenagers in their arm force. The sins of this country if remain in its boundary it is better for others. Some of its European friends too are realizing the same. India can ill sustain importing this sin named 'American Dream' - literal translation of the same 'have no consideration for anyone but gather by all means.' India may not sustain its degeneration with this exported dream. It is on the verge of Collapse. 57 BAQI BILLAH OF DELHI It was said that a man went to the assembly of the master Baqi-Billah of Delhi and said: 'I have been reading famous verse of Master Hafiz, "If your teacher bids you stain your prayer-carpet with wine, obey him," but I have a difficulty.' Baqi-Billah said: 'Dwell apart from me for some time and I shall illustrate the matter for you.' After a considerable period of time, the disciple received a letter from the sage. It said: "Take all the money you have and give it to the gate keeper of any brothel." The disciple was shocked, and for a time thought that the master must be a fraud. After wrestling with days however he went to nearest house of ill-fame and presented the man at the door with all the money he had. 'For such a sum of money' said the doorman, 'I shall allot you the choicest gem of our collection, an untouched woman.' As soon as he entered the room, the woman there said: 'I have been tricked into being in this house, and am held here by force and threats. If your sense of justice is stronger than your reason for coming here, help me to escape.' Then the disciple knew the meaning of the poem of Hafiz, 'If your teacher bids you to stain your prayer carpet with wine, obey him.' 58 WHEN A MAN MEETS HIMSELF ".... You can do it, but not when you presume that you can do it without any practice, without any training, in the midst of being quite uncertain as to what it is you are why you like or dislike anything. When you have found yourself you can have knowledge. Until then you can only have opinions. Opinions are based on habit and what you conceive to be convenient to you. The study of the way requires self encounter along the way. You have not met yourself yet. Only advantage of meeting others in the meantime is that one of them may present you to yourself. Before you do that, you will possibly imagine that you have met yourself many times. But truth is that when you do meet yourself, you come into a permanent endowment and bequest of knowledge that is like no other experience on earth." - Tariqavi 59 AHANGAR Ahangar was mighty sword smith who used to live in easter valley of Ahghanistan. In peace time he used to make ploughs, and horse shoes. Above all he sang. Many used to come from distant land to hear his song - Valley of paradise. While he sang all as long as he sang any one listened were transfixed and heaven could be felt in the surroundings. After the song is over when silence is broken - all would ask 'Is this paradise real?' The song had strange lilt and haunting quality; most of all it had a story distantly familiar and people felt they knew this valley. Many came from distant land beyond Hindu -Kush, from Herat and Paghman, from Qataghan and Badakhsan, from forest of Walnut trees, from snow capped mountains and Cetral Asia to hear this song. 'As real as real could be', Ahangar would answer. 'How do you know?' they would ask, 'have you ever been there?' 'Not in ordinary way,' Ahangar would answer. They would ask where that paradise is. '"It is where the azure sky originate from silhouettes of mountain' and he would gaze at the distant boundary of Mountains. Ahangar was in love with Aisha but she was least interested in him and she would laugh at Ahangar. She did not believe paradise did exist. So did Hassan a braggart and fearsome swordsman who swore to marry Aisha. 'if you believe that valley is real as you say in those mountains of Sangar where blue haze rises, why don't you find out? Hassan asked. 'That won't be right, I know that', Ahangar said. 'Aisha does not believe in your absurd story of paradise; you believe what is convenient to you, while would not believe what is otherwise. In case you marry Aisha, there shall not be trust between you and Aisha - all manner of evil shall result from this union. You must find your real paradise before you marry her. 60 'Do you want me to go to the valley then? Will Aisha marry me if I go and return safely?' asked Ahangar. 'Yes' Hassan and Audience said together. 'Yes' Aisha murmured. Collecting some dried mulberries and a scrap of bread Ahanghar left for the distant mountain. He climbed and climbed till he reached a wall encircling the mountain. With great difficulty he climbed the wall soon to reach another one, then another then another - totally five of them. Descending the last one he found himself in a valley strikingly similar to his own! People came out to meet him - he realized something very strange is happening. Months later Ahanghar the smith limped back to his native village walking like an old man to his humble hut. Word spread throughout the countryside - all gathered before his hut and wanted to hear his stories adventure. Hassan the swordsman on behalf all the people spoke and called Ahanghar to the window, 'Did you Master Ahanghar reach the valley of paradise?' Every one was surprised to see how old Ahanghar has become. 'I did'. 'What was it like?' Ahanghar fumbled for words, and looked at assembly with weariness and hopelessness. 'I climbed and climbed. When it felt that there can be no human habitation in such a desolate place, after many trials and disappointments I came upon a valley. This valley was exactly like the one in which we live. And then I saw the people - they are not only like us people: they are the same people. For every Hassan, every Aisha, every Ahanghar and every anybody we have here, there is another one, exactly same in that valley. These are likenesses and reflections to us when we such things. But it is we who are likeness and reflections of them - we are here, we are their twins ....' 61 Every one thought Ahanghar gone mad from his privations, Aisha married Hassan. Ahanghar grew rapidly old and died. All the people who listened to this from the lips of Ahanghar rapidly grew old and lost interest in life itself. They always felt something going to happen over which they have no control from which they have no hope. This story is told every 1000 years and quickly forgotten as soon as those who have heard the story is dead. 62 INFECTION It was a very dark night. Mulla was crossing a desert. He heard some sound coming from somewhere. He followed the sound and found it is coming from a ditch. It was dug by Darbesh who was making that sound Mullah asked "can I be with you I am very afraid". Darbash, "You may but do not disturb me. I have to finish quite a few things." Once in the ditch Mullah pulled away Darbesh' rug and wrapped himself shivering out of fear. After sometime he started making gurgling sound. Darbesh asked, "what are you doing?" "I can't stop chattering! More over my throat is dry, I want to drink." "Take this tumbler about 200 yards on the left you shall find well." Darvesh said. "No you go and get me water, I am afraid to go out of this Ditch". Reluctantly Darbesh got out with tumbler and his dagger to fetch water for Mullah Nasiruddin. Mulla pulled Darvesh back asked for the Dagger, "If someone comes how do I defend myself?" Darvesh left with tumbler to fetch water for Mullah. As he approached the ditch where Mullah is now occupying for himself, Mullah shouted, "Don't you dare come near, you shall have this dagger in your heart!" "But it is me Darbesh, who went to fetch water for you!" Darvesh said. "How do I know, you may be the same unknown in the garb of Darbesh for whose sake I got into this ditch". 63 ECONOMIST Opinionated, small-minded NL from abroad is lecturing an audience of engineers, business men, politicians, collection of mutual back scratching academicians, and over painted fancy dressed women intellectuals. He is lecturing on Naya and Niti. He always talks on subjects’ matters as if they are invented first time by him. As hours went by Mulla saw this man's thoughts ran in pattern. He is aged 75 plus but remains a victim of vanity and pride. Mulla saw how minor points of unrealistic intellectualism for its own sake were magnified by him and applied in every situation. Subjects after subjects were discussed, and the intellectual cited books and precedents, false analogies and extraordinary presumptions without intuitive reality. In Sonorous voice he would repeat 'Naya' 'Niti'. As if there is so much melody in his voice even if reality is missing. At length he produced a book - his latest that contained his life time scholarship wisdom and earned him prize and fame. Nasirudin came forward and requested to see the book. Holding it in front of the eyes he started turning pages after pages for several minutes. The assembly looked on. The NL started fidgeting and puffing. At last he could contain himself no more. "You are holding my book upside down!" he screamed. "I know," said Nassirudin. "Since it is one of the archetype which seem to have produced YOU, it seems only sensible thing to do (hold it upside down), if one is to really learn from it." 64 Cancer’s a Funny Thing J. B. S. Yet, thanks to modern surgeon’s skills, It can be killed before it kills Upon a scientific basis In nineteen out of twenty cases. I noticed I was passing blood (Only a few drops, not a flood). So pausing on my homeward way From Tallahassee to Bombay I asked a doctor, now my friend, To peer into my hinder end, To prove or to disprove the rumour That I had a malignant tumour. They pumped in BaS04. Till I could really stand no more, And, when sufficient had been pressed in, They photographed my large intestine, In order to decide the issue They next scraped out some bits of tissue. (Before they did so, some good pal Had knocked me out with pentothal, Whose action is extremely quick, And does not leave me feeling sick.) The microscope returned the answer That I had certainly got cancer, So I was wheeled into the theatre Where holes were made to make me better. One set is in my perineurn Where I can feel, but can’t yet see ‘em. Another made me like a kipper Or female prey of Jack the Ripper, Through this incision, I don’t doubt, The neoplasm was taken out, Along with colon, and lymph nodes Where cancer cells might find abodes. A third much smaller hole is meant To function as a ventral vent: So now I am like two-faced Janus The only* god who sees his anus. I’ll swear, without the risk of perjury, It was a snappy bit of surgery. My rectum is a serious loss to me, 65 But I’ve a very neat colostomy, And hope, as soon as I am able, To make it keep a fixed time-table. So do not wait for aches and pains To have a surgeon mend your drains; If he says “cancer” you’re a dunce Unless you have it out at once, For if you wait it’s sure to swell, And may have progeny as well. I know that cancer often kills, But so do cars and sleeping pills; And it can hurt one till one sweats, So can bad teeth and unpaid debts. That delivers messages from any one or every one - suppose a letter is delivered to the messenger - it won’t be delivered - what about reply - the sender shall get a reply every moment till he is no more – A Fresh New Moment Enveloped with ‘His Own Expectations’. One has option but to forget the disappointment and if possible enjoy the moment. One instead keeps the disappointment – it should not have happened! With life’s list of disappointments one makes a trip to pilgrimage - kisses the stone and throws the long letter written over life time, how (s)he was deceived every moments of Life, into a letter box -mumbling 'you know all' - carries water from Zam-Zam or Ganga or a flower as an acknowledgement that the letter was delivered. Faithful can start the life new without the collection of disappointments – afresh. Meditation is the only way for unfaithful to throw away one’s own disappointments. After doing away with the whole list of Life’s disappointments – there is the Silence - unfaithful lands on the current moment – Magnetic Magic Carpet – the reality. One can never step out. Sometimes letters come into my mail box - urgent - reply etc - sometimes from some special unfaithful I compose a letter such as this. The nature has no obligation to be rational logical or axiomatic or repetitive or measurable or mathematical - a human composition of any kind - language! The nature has no obligation to anyone to fulfill one’s expectations. While nature is true – it has no implications – no depth – no bottom – no further truth. One is forever saddled on magic carpet – One is forever flying from moment to moment – One can’t ever step out of reality – one can’t get off one’s magic carpet – One must enjoy this moment without option. One can’t have more or less! One can’t help nor harm!! One can’t be helped or harmed!!! None has control over one’s Self and all is Him, the supreme. This moment is The Self. This moment is the truth. “One can unite with this very moment and enjoy the supreme bliss; or grieve.” 67 Chapter Minneapolis This is my last week here. It is Time to look around. America is full of churches – I have not visited a church for many years except when I used to go with my son to his Boy Scout gatherings. However church plays very core role for most American. I am not so fond of music especially American – I have not been part of that entertainment so far. I do not participate in amusement parks and but museums I enjoy – all kinds. I fondly recollect a 3D 25’x15’x10’ color holography I saw that of a Mermaid – looks real that vanishes as you go past it. I have seen a 100 years old city in down town Dallas – live and colorful with real people houses hotels Restaurants Churches Carriages chorus group dancing in Parks – I was taken 100 years back in time. I like to travel in time. I am living in a house that belongs to a middle aged woman and her dog. We do not much interact. The dog makes its appearance when I open the garage door. But I do not react about its excitement of seeing me. I go down stairs to be with myself. In the past I have really enjoyed some conducted tours and I always recommend such tours. I took a tour of Boeing – saw its gigantic infrastructure and the assembly line of Planes being made. Contrary to my expectations they do not make engines or interior. I also saw their new 787 Dream liner molded body. Within days it made its maiden test flight. Yesterday I made a list of places I must visit. Often I do not make all of them. Today at my first stop entered a medical instrument museum. Very old devices used for locating acupuncture insertion points. The name of the museum is Bakken – maker of cardiac pacemaker. This place not only holds a great library of ancient medical books but also have garden of medicinal herbs and trees. There was a two person game to move a ball towards or away from your opponent by relaxing. Electricity and magnetism may play role in healing. Zero gravity, memory erasure… It took me a while to locate the place. My GPS took me round and round. I was the last to enter – half an hour before close. Loitering around, I entered a dark room. On an operation table under a cover lie a body perhaps that of Frankenstein. There was a golden button – that asked me to press. The room is where Frankenstein’s monster is born. Room went dark. It was 12 minutes show created with multimedia sound light and movement and narration at the background. I am to see now live sea animals. In Cincinnati, near my home in Columbus - there is one large aquarium under Ohio River. I wish I had a camera. It is so luxurious to see fishes and sharks and other sea animals floating all around you. They are astonishingly beautiful creatures of the sea with lovely skin, texture and functional streamlined body far more Beautiful that of human. Corals and Sea anemones have breath taking beauty. It took so much planning and execution – nothing left to chances – creator took care to create a truly beautiful planet. 68 More than life they exuded love! While I appreciate the beauties of creation I detest intellectual explanations of them – that it took many million or billion years to evolve! Near my home in Columbus, we have a zoo and perhaps it is the very largest in America. It takes several days to see it in full. Here for the first time I saw Penguins, otters, gorillas and chimpanzees. While NASA or Washington does not evoke any confidence – ordinary Americans are very extra-ordinary for their love for living creatures – they take care to create habitats enjoyable for the captives. I started early today. I had two destinations in my mind – Minneapolis Institute of Art and Russian Art Museum. But first took away all my time. I would take several days to finish all that is in display. Chinese, Indian, Roman, Greek, African, American, Modern, Arabia, Persian, Inca, Maya, American Indian ($7 for non-members), the collection is so beautifully placed and so eye catching. It is impossible for me to describe. I spent quite some time to buy one Buddha on stone – affordable and beautiful for my Columbus home. However it was so heavy to carry that I had to give up the desire. There was even a beautiful Czech car, and many manuscripts in ancient languages. Beautiful paintings, ceramic, wooden appliances, even a kitchen from Germany. Many of them from a private collection of a Minneapolis based business magnet. There was a breath taking statue of a veiled beauty. I have seen a full statue once in Salderjung Museum, Hyderabad – front is a veiled beauty while back is that of a warrior. I bought a small but beautiful ceramic teapot to enjoy my Darjeeling Tea in the morning. When someone comes from home, Indians take them around to see Niagara, Las Vegas, Washington, New York; but it shall far more worthwhile to spend a day in Minneapolis Institute of Art and it is free. There was large single stone bluish luminescent Chinese Jade sculpture – magnificent mountain streams and two poems written on the same. http://www.artsmia.org/ There were magnificent sculpture of female beauties – breath taking and eye catching. Often I pass through Chicago but I do not remember to have seen the Dinosaur at O’Hara. It struck me this time. I read the story of it being extinct 500 million years before. It was a huge creature. I also remembered the skeleton at ISI Geology building. Again my skeptic mind sneered at theory of evolution. Why one has to explain everything with a theory. It is a showmanship trying to establish oneself to be superior. Is anyone ever superior? Does nature know order? Is not chronology or time order is creation of mind? If all moments are not there always, painted well within the boundary of this very Moment! No single moment is ever repeated – there is no question an entire day is repeated over next trillion years. That much about history being repeated and then fit a theory to explain this fiction called History. It is better, if one is inclined to really learn, she visits all these museums like Minneapolis Institute of Art. One thing very strange about that Czech car (designed in 1959) – I searched but could not find the inlet for gas tank! There used to be a new Mercedes from 1930s in display at MBNA - silver in color too. It was display of wealth for MBNA – announcing solvency till it was bought over by Bank of America. But this car had an extraordinary beauty grace and color! 69 I saw one car museum in Washington next to a very large Stalactite cave. It had also an extraordinary collection of cars of truly beautiful design, some with very large steam engines. Next to that museum was a garden maze! I went with Soham and spent a whole day in caves museum and the garden Maze. The only worthwhile places I saw in Washington. Washington stinks of corruption – NASA, IRS, Smithsonian Museum, Capitol Hill, White House, Hotels, Streets and Metros. Another place I enjoyed is a private beach in Oceanic city with greenish water and wild horses. I learned how to slice through water and float on waves. 70 Is mother earth an Idiot Yesterday I was watching PBS – it was very long program about Obama’s deception. It was presented that there is not even one in the current Government that is not pre-selected by Wall Street and Bankers. Further they claimed it had been so for last 50 years in US Government irrespective of any party. Further they have been funding selection of foreign government - election or political process to place people of their choice. Are they not successful in India Pakistan Bangladesh and various other places – Australia European Union etc? It is a long program, I switched it off. Two days back the same PBS was telling me about Pentagon Papers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentagon_Papers) I was not moved, I switched the channel and watched ‘Everybody Likes …’ PBS often gives me information on subjects I do not need to know – it told me about peril of US farming for its emphasis on bio fuel. It appears there is little savings from it - at most 20% over fossil fuel while there is irreparable damage to soil ground water, toxic-river, and Lake. It appears vast area of farm land is no longer irrigable. I switch channel. Couple of weeks back I was a mere guest in my own house for some people invited. One of them was a very strong supporter of current president and now disillusioned, and another very strong supporter of financial system of USA. Both are very religious and faithful. I try to poke their faith and fallacies. Both are worried in their own ways about future. Retirement Investments ... Stability. I just told them things can’t go on like this for ever. Things are going to break down irreparably – the flood can’t be stopped. 36 months! One can’t be so intelligent that without doing any work - one is untouchable and supreme and have total control on entire resources of the nature. I tried to tell my guests – intellects have very limited power and nature has no reason to abide by rules of intellect. It is not axiomatic mathematical probabilistic or beautiful what we regard is beautiful. Being religious they would like to know more about God truth or vision of God. I puzzle them with questions and they turn violent – they challenge how come I know but all these greats in Harvard, Yale, MIT, Caltech, Berkley or Chicago do not know! I do not know of any knowledge that is proprietary of some named well where you have to buy ticket to drink and become learned. I am not fighting superstitions! I am told one sixth of US Economy is Insurance. I am again told Insurance companies are stuffing 80% by outsourcing. While Insurance companies are funded 100% by USA residents, and insurance cost is rising every 6 months – is it not criminal to out-source and for whose benefit? There is absolutely no improvement or automation of service in last 30 years. It was all manual then and so even now! I could not be challenged now since one of the guests belongs to IT department of an Insurance company for 30 71 years!! That company is laying off in thousands and jobs being out-sourced. He wondered aloud why his job is still there. Does flood care whose hut it is swallowing? President is doing his best to fund Insurance Industry in the name of modernization. Presidential priority next, after bailing out big Banks – too big to fail. They have to reorder their beliefs and sort them out in their mind. I ask them why China is progressing while Americans are threatened. Why American great universities while producing enumerable PhDs, Nobel Laureates, and theories, are not contributing an ounce to national wealth. There are countries like India Russia or Brazil too showing booming growth, while there is increasing unproductive mass population here. Does political experiment with Muslim world have any future? Why do we see phenomenal growth in Muslim population at the expense of faithless population among other religions? I tell them nature earth creates resources and distributes evenly around the world – it does not know and can’t distinguish between political boundary or intelligence or religions. It has no dear; it has no near, nor distant. All points on its surface, in its bowel, or in the heaven are at equal-loving-distance away. It is impossible to have more of anything than you already have – security happiness durability whatever be the key measure of your choice! Problem of intelligence is that - intelligence does not need hard work or perseverance – one can be intelligent too easily. Couple of years at Yale or Harvard would do that for any one from Timbactoo or Cambodia – one learns as good as anybody how to bluff or cheat in sonorous voice with speech cut copy pasted from archive of speeches - surpassing any home grown bright star. It is intelligent to create your puppet president and control all the production of promissory notes and distribute the same in all the places it is sought – stock markets in Mumbai, Hong Kong, Manila, Tokyo, or Moscow. Sit back and relax. Money there creates new billionaires! Banks go belly up but who cares we shall print more! Stock market does not create a Shilling worth of wealth anywhere in world but it creates puppet presidents!! Time is not very far when this bogus money is used to place their choice of remote control puppets as President and their choice of staff – all educated from Harvard or Yale!! New found wealth from USA invested in the name of Globalization, USA universities are flooded with foreign students and they are children of Novae Riche (politician businessmen or government officials). The banks that fund their studies did not exist 5 years back! Estimated $15 billion is the earnings from foreign students in USA!! They live in penthouse; drive Mercedes; developing right connections and intellects. Long live intelligence. Is mother earth an idiot? 72 All is me Even though I talk often about unselfishness, I have discovered I am the most selfish – I do care very little for anybody or anything else except what my pursuit for my gratification and I am uncompromising. I have withdrawn myself to the carpet under me – so much so I am design on the carpet and nothing neither more nor any less. The only reason to be so again very selfish – I do not like to repent over past loss – nor do I like to think what is in my store tomorrow. I simply do not like to know future. I fear knowing future may make me worry and lessen my joy for life this moment. My goal is thus to have a brain that of a butterfly. No savings no investment no exercise no hard work no relationship – fly around for a while like a butterfly and then drop dead with missing wing perhaps. Off and on, thoughts of death disease and violent accidents cross my mind – for a while chill runs through my mind I see the horror and horrible pain of disability – all possible future. But I do not have precaution – all these have appeared in my vision just now – and I must not do anything. I have to cross every moment in my life and the most important moment of all, is this current one – I must remain silent – I can’t be any separable entity on a current moment. In other words, I can’t simply have a separate existence at this moment other than the moment itself! What is the most significant achievement for any one? Receiving something that no one can snatch away and that cannot be exceeded – better than every moments of the past – better than all imagined moments of future! I have the real moment with total ownership of the same just now plus all the imagined moments over and above, under my command if only I wish!! I have written enough for all showing off my superiority to all and exposing my ignorance and inferiority all the time. While an insect or a grass knows that all that it notices is it – I do not know this simple fact – “All is me” 73 With high Hopes With high hopes I spent more than two hours on road and spent $30 on tickets and parking to visit two museums in Minneapolis – Science Museum and Walker Art Museum. Nothing astonishing did I find there to make me scientifically aligned or artistically aroused - typical American extravaganza that you often see in large Malls with very little astonishment. At Walker, you are trapped into underground car parking. You get into large empty rooms with nothing worthwhile to see with lot of non-sense and very cheap stuff on display – some are audio visual and you are not permitted to photograph. Only reason perhaps that you display it in internet and denying them admission fees. There was also two Japanese Choreographers who are giving nude show. I did not wish to waste my time on that show either – nude or dressed. All galleries might as well be called All American but – one was particularly called “American” – without any artistry in it. There was another big empty room and I was not allowed to photograph. Center of the room a floating aluminum sheet about one two inches on ground that had uneven surface the contour of which changing and showing slow movement within restricted region of the center un-marked. I used to create such animations with three dimensional objects when I was a child with foils, ball bearings, rubber band tension and wheels out of wooden or plastic thread rollers. Obviously it is an aluminum mat thrown over several battery operated engines with uneven spokes – they do not travel but creates moving animated surface on the sheet – illusion of creation of Quakes Mountains and valley. This was accompanied with some random soft murmuring sounds or noise. I would create many of them and far more interesting perhaps. In one room there were many large semi-transparent wax pieces hanged from ceiling of uneven heights – what art it was creating I would not be able to tell – it looked very cheap produce of little intellect. In another very big room with a very big name there was a very big table with heap of many thousands of jigsaw pieces all similar cut but many colors. All around the table are chairs. Some are making words and sentences with them – being creative perhaps. Steps and stairs in the building are too big and spacious. It is often difficult to climb up or down. Seating places are too hard and uncomfortable. Art can make one’s life difficult and uncomfortable. Walker’s staffs were dressed strangely behaved strangely too. The parking entry and exit give you a kind of uncertain feeling that perhaps you are lost and can’t get out. Before getting in or leaving my car in the parking – I waited for someone to come out or go in. I found one lady with an escort driving out. I stopped them and asked where to pay for parking – I had a ticket when I got into underground. She pointed to a door where there was unmanned pay booth. Before I ventured into the building I stayed put with an elderly couple who are struggling to pay for parking. After paying you have 15 minutes to get out. My confidence rose when I saw them succeeding in paying via credit card. While getting out it was my turn to struggle. Finally I too succeeded with the machine designed to confuse one. But getting out another puzzle – I followed exit sign but it took nearly 10 minutes till I saw day light out of that underground maze; it took hardly few seconds to enter !! Science Museum was a great effort to reach – it is in three (five officially) levels. Pre-historic Dinosaurs’ skeletons took most of the space. Someone wished to take a survey but I declined – what could I say them when the outfit is tasteless purposeful swindling operations. 74 I had similar disappointments with Smithsonian Museum in Washington with collections from NASA and Space Travel. I searched again the internet where should I go tomorrow … 75 I am not on sell I am supposed to leave for Columbus this morning and it is 11 am now but I have not started. I got up at 8 AM. I packed up last night partially – I was little apprehensive but did not believe the forecast but when I looked out – it is all snow. I am praying – it must stop. I am not sure with this heavy snowing whether I should start. I am looking at I-90 or I-94 as far as I could see with internet camera and traffic – but not confident unless snowing stops. I am stuck nowhere to go. I am alone in this world – no advice is enough to abandon the security of home however temporary to be in road leaving Minneapolis forever. 76 I snapped the above two in S3200 Coolpix in color but it is black white. I am talking to myself. Writing is talking to me. Thinking is searching for a similar situation and the result in order to make a decision. Why is decision needed? I used to watch snails when I was a child. Now again I am thinking. Can I think for a snail? I touch snail that is moving leaving a wet path of its movement. It stops. Its two antennas withdraw as well as the body. It waits for a while. Again the body comes out. Antennas come out the eyeballs move to their location watching the progress of snail. How far they see and what they see I do not know. Decision I see taken about the movement. Movement is necessary for food and pleasure – creation of little ones. Food is required for pleasure, growth, and multiplication. Why and how so many automations got created? I am seeing through my life time of observations – food pleasure and creation. I am talking to myself – babies I love but I doubt I love working hard and doing things out of fear inability to face disability to move my muscles yet prolonging my consciousness. Having come to this point - I am in confusion – in circles and can’t make any movement in any direction even though I have some goal. Two days back I went to see a waterfall. I usually do not like to drive without purpose. It took some driving till I came to a place, perhaps near to waterfall; there was a circle – round about. Circles I can’t tackle in USA. I really do not know where to go. My GPS was advising me to take an exit which one I do not know – I got out and again it was advising to get into the circle. At last I called off going to falls instead came back to safety of home – where all is static till I move out again. Madhuda is doing well and has got many houses including a palace. He also told he was grey but healthy – has ability to scale heights up to 18000 feet in the Himalayas. I talked to Basu – he has abandoned stability but on the move – he talked about his pilgrimages – I urged him to write. Jogu is in the back ground doing a sales job and his wife is a school teacher – daughter shall graduate soon as an engineer and a son in school. Massima is hard of hearing 91 years but with good memory but commanding – a girls school teacher for life time. I have this scrape book of characters - some living and some dead. I scan them to locate my own character and my movement - where I am going. Definitely I detest movement and look for permanency. The search for that point – my many life time goal – the permanent home somehow I must reach so that I can disregard all climates – snow sun flood draught or death. Not by declaration of reaching the end; but reaching the end of permanent home truly; that from which no bad weather, no change of fortune shall ever evict me. What is that home? It appears that I know that home – IT IS JUST NOW. However my hallucination does not stop! I can’t ever cross ‘just now’! Now, I am totally surrounded by MY imagination – My hallucination …nonexisting places and time. I do not feel comfortable – I am shivering in uncontrollable fear grief and misery! How do I rein in my imagination and think NOTHING, just now? I am incapable of practicing ‘doing nothing’ and thinking NOTHING – not in this life time. 77 I know my goal but the method of achieving my goal is not looking at photograph or a flower till they disappear in the background! My body bell rings with changing background – that is Just Now. I shiver and have epileptic fit and surrender to it. With nerves smoothened like that of a snail – I reach out with my antenna and absorb some more of NOW that is waiting to excite me into Hallucination – death or disaster or chaos! Time ticks away – I am going through Water Boarding treatment of NOW. It shall go on till ‘NOW but NO SHIVER’ – with or without Hallucination. My land lady in her sophisticated way pointed me out to a Hafiz I did not read but she read. [next] Do I create more and more? Do I talk more and more to me (can’t even blame my creator since there is no one in my viewing distance just now)? Do I think all the time that I am as melodious as Homer or Vyasa and my epic story shall enlighten many generations? How can I truly stop hallucinating!!! It is so foolish to think of one self as anyone other than yourself, when you have no EQUAL even when you have no senses. All that you have is present surrounded by untruth or ILLUSION. Whatever I write or do, I have no readership or viewer except myself. I have been provided with a plateful of fresh delicious meal all real – sight smell and beauty of the same, fills the surroundings – I have no obligation to enjoy the same – I may reject it and live in my imagination with no reality or truth in it – talking to myself as I am doing now. Do I congratulate me for my brightness or condemn my foolishness? I do neither (my emerging intelligence). NOW pokes my imagination – I imagine again with a hypothetical question to my self – even without body this moment shall I be imagining? {I learnt this stroking recently, it captures my imperfection} I need a MOMENT to dream or sleep or enjoy. Suppose I am all by myself do I create (can I) a moment for self indulgence? I am not imaginative enough to imagine that I created this moment, although I can imagine myself the composer of this text at this moment. I foolishly ask again how many life times I had before I could imagine with words color smell taste and touch …? Who is that me composing me before it could finally create a moment? Moment was created first and me next or both at the same time? Who is that entity that created the moment that I notice NOW? I can’t think me to be Synonymous to that Truth who created this moment. I can at best think not think ‘this moment’ to be its equal. Composing this moment out of nothing is miraculous feat impossible for me to achieve – even when I know for sure (?) there is no one who would stumble upon this words or understand. 78 I surely existed before my ‘Moment Now’ or my composition ‘till now’ with words. But I am the SAME AS THE DARKNESS and nothing else – I can’t imagine No one is begging me not to have the fundamental intelligence of SNAIL that I not only possess but execute – I must withdraw into nothing till my shivering and hallucination stops. Who created my shivering, and the hallucination of the pleasure that I run after at this moment, trashing all the divine real pleasure I am already surrounded with just now that belongs to me alone? Culmination of my lust for life is the end of having. I can’t be REBOUNDED by that impossible unconquerable impenetrable wall called just now that separates me (false) from me (truth). Me and my world being Virtual (past), caught in the mirror of Now (present), held by Absent Real. ALL THREE – I, my world, and Now merge into nothing (joy for lack of words) Why I (false) have the guise - my body and my collection of snaps? I can’t ever meet truth (me) since I can’t think truth in any guise. False can’t be Present. I am always absent! Along the way I learnt – I can conquer nothing – not my body, not my lust, not my longings, not my kernel pleasure, not my hallucinating compositions – I have no option but enjoy them even if they throw me into epileptic feat or nervous breakdown – heart burns – thrombosis of heart or mind – soil my attire – cause my public hanging or stoning to death … sending away to destination unknown in a raft alone to meet death (of consciousness) all by myself in the wide open JUST NOW, without any more word game. I am incapable of proving to me or any one. There is no honor in reaching me. It is end of me. I am absent. 79 Orphan by Hafiz You have fathered a child with me. You had your night of fun. If you no longer want the love my Beautiful body could yield At least take care of that Holy infant my heart has become. You sired an heir with me When You gave birth to my soul. I thought of complaining to all the angels Last night About Your treatment of this “Homeless child,” But then I remembered they too Have a long list of love-complaints Because They also know You so Well. 80 It took a while It took a while to understand what is being said in the last poem. I gave it a name also dropped a word. Now I understand. In a way, my cradle is Just Now, I can’t have any more ties outside the cradle. Yes he had his fun with my body and mind for so long; but tonight I am orphan – I neither have faith in me, my body, my mind, nor Him. I have no parents! Along the way I have lost all my friends my relations, my family, and now Him. I am floated into the merciless stream of moments – this very moment is my only home – I shall know no other stability, nor security. I have no one nothing and no heaven to look forward. I am entirely hopeless of better life – now or after. No creator – no creation. I am forever an orphan now without stability or ties. I have no option but enjoy now - my instability my loneliness and my unavoidable painful inglorious future without care. I am the end. 81 I love every bit of this world I am Snail again but with a difference. I did not tell you that Snails are bi-sexual (both male and female at the same time) animal and invertebrate. When two mature Snails come near touching distance each sends a prod to fuse into the gelatinous body of the other, and both reproduce their own little ones. It has intelligence to disregard danger and search for love. But I am dumb I embrace danger in order to do what I love – that includes expressing love to some that can make my life miserable – yet I do it ignoring all future suffering. I embrace death but I do not abstain from my love. I can’t justify myself or characterize myself more than what I have said just now. I embrace death – I step into the world expressing my love – I do not stop myself and I do not hide me nor my feelings. Along the way I am trying hard to enjoy my death in every imaginable way. Snails do it. Insects that jump into fire do it. I do it instinctively like an insect. Yes, I looked for an escape route to act instinctively and yet not engulfed by fire of suffering. I truly wanted to conquer the death trap called world. I tried to say with my action – I think say or do what I please – I do not volunteer but almighty world is welcome to destroy me in whatever manner it wants. I AM AFRAID but I do not abstain. I have done away with my entire defense but not my love I love every bit of this world 82 Joy Unlimited I am in a meeting at every moment. Some are painful and some are pleasant. Is it not possible to turn every moment to an experience of joy? Here is the blue print of implementation of Joy circuit. The Goal is ‘I love and enjoy every moment of my life.’ With this goal I do not have to give up anything I enjoy – my Joys! Once the goal is set, moments have to get transformed into Joy slowly but automatically, since I am inflexible on my goal and I do not abandon it even for a second. One receives Joy and Joy only. It is impossible to receive anyone or anything else. It is my commitment to myself to stay the course through all thick and thin, none is expected to appreciate my ways. Hence I must love and enjoy all expression of disgust if any. Whatever comes in contact with me has to get transformed into Joy or I vanish. Incidentally the word for GOAL in Sanskrit is MOKSHA. Another word very familiar with Hindus rather Vaishanv is Baikuntha – literally means “Place without Worry”. I have been driving for two days. I am travelling back to Columbus. Yesterday I was driving through almost a death region – snow and rain for 8 hours, after crossing Chicago, rain stopped but it was dark everywhere. I pulled off the road around 9 PM. I had a diner but hardly any sleep. All my nerves are alert. I thought of getting up early morning and starting at 6 AM but when I started it was 11AM. I was woken up several times to talk to several people over phone. All job related. I love nothing best but working. Theory is important for me since I can correct myself and tune my Goal leaving behind what has already been achieved; further I can help others too in reaching their goal. However supreme goal is the same for any one born human. There can’t be any superior goal and since this is permanent – hence it is tagged as truth. Simply speaking, visible epidermis of truth is This Moment. Invisible Truth is that ‘Me’ on whom I am permanent resident. I can only reach Him when I reach this moment. Only way to do the same is to ‘Perceive all as they are’. All my imaginations are false. False is all painful – its other name is Hell. If there is heaven – it necessarily has to be true – that is this moment. I am in Heaven if and only when I am this moment untied from all but being all. My ties are the one and only cause of my pain suffering shame grief or fear – they are all REAL. There is no way out of these ties – not floating on Ganges or being lost in desert.
