Our accomplishments for the year are as follows: • Our monthly luncheons have been well attended. We have approx. 40-60 members attending each event. This shows that the topics resonate with our members and is interesting. • We have introduced breakfast sessions and have seen that these programs are also well attended. These breakfast programs are in addition to the luncheon programs • Volunteers are key since the IIA Chapters are run by these dedicated volunteers who volunteer their time and effort for Chapter. In the past years we have seen a drop in the number of volunteers which we have reversed in the current year. Our frequent notices in the newsletter and website have resulted in additional volunteers. As the old volunteers wish to take a break, we continue to look for new volunteers. We have held joint programs with the ISACA and IIA encouraging members to mingle at social events and in joint luncheon events. This is a fantastic opportunity to network with members of other professional associations. For our student members and for our members who are beginners in the profession we have made the job boards free. This way employers can place free advertisements on our website. We have introduced two new member benefits programs so that members could avail of discounted schemes just by being a member of the local chapter. The chapter also gets sponsored when we have these tie-ups. It’s a win-win situation for the chapter and its members. We are introducing the program ‘Become an IIA exam author”, details of which are provided in this newsletter. It’s a great opportunity to give back to our profession. For our senior IIA executives we are crystalizing the Chief Audit Executive event to provide fellowship and networking opportunities to the leaders in our profession. This will be held in the second week of June. We are currently finalizing the list of CAE’s in Calgary and will be sending the invites soon. For the past several years we were not breaking even while conducting luncheons and IIA events. Financially, we are beginning to show surplus since we have sponsorships and increased attendance from our luncheon/breakfast events. Finally, we are set to retain the platinum chapter status for the current year. This shows that we are a reasonably active chapter catering to its local members. We are planning to have our AGM event and social event in June. Our website will have the details as soon as the venue/date is confirmed. Your Board is meeting in June-July to discuss the strategic objectives for 2015-16. If you feel that there is something that we are missing out or would like your Board to focus, send me an email and let us know or let us invite you to the strategic objective meeting so that you can contribute to the Chapter Objectives. Please continue to check out events, news, and important announcements by visiting the IIA, IIA Canada, and the Calgary Chapter websites. If you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact me at rdevadas@kpmg.ca Stay engaged. Stay connected. Rajgopal Devadas, CIA President, IIA Calgary Chapter 2|P a g e UPCOMING EVENTS Chief Audit Executive Roundtable – June 11, 2015 In the evening of June 11, the Calgary Chapter of the IIA is organizing a Chief Audit Executive (CAE) Roundtable. Audit Roundtables are for the senior-most leaders of an organization’s internal audit function. The roundtable offers a facilitated forum to discuss common IA challenges and concerns. Discussions held throughout the roundtable allow CAEs to share solutions and best practices, lessons learned, emerging trends and issues facing their departments. CAE Roundtables are held with other IIA chapters and are considered a positive experience for those in attendance. These are easy and informal events meant to provide a forum for discussion with minimal formal presentation. The agenda will be developed in advance and distributed to participants prior to the date. As a CAE, if you are interested in finding out more about this Roundtable, please get in touch with Raj Devadas @ rdevadas@kpmg.ca so that he can contact you directly along with an invitation to the event. Control self-assessment (CSA) is a technique that allows managers and work teams directly involved in business units, functions or processes to participate in assessing the organization's risk management and control processes. In its various formats, CSA can cover objectives, risks, controls and processes. Internal auditors can utilize CSA programs for gathering relevant information about risks and controls; for focusing audit work on high risk, unusual areas; and to forge greater collaboration with operating managers and work teams. Created specifically to provide an introduction for those new to internal audit, the seminar will provide background and context on the role of internal audit, key influences on the practice, and foundational concepts. https://chapters.theiia.org/IIA%2 0Canada/Events/Pages/eSeminar ---Introduction-to-InternalAudit.aspx # Date Event Topic 6 10/13/2015 7:30 AM To 10/16/2015 4:30 PM Toronto Seminar Week - Eaton Chelsea Hotel, Toronto 7 Oct 13, 2015 1:00 PM To 2:30 PM (ET) Webinar Free to Members - Board Oversight of Internal Audit How to Maximize IA Value 8 Oct 15, 2015 7:30 AM To Oct 16, 2015 12:00 PM Seminar - Audit Leadership Event - Eaton Chelsea Hotel, Toronto IIA Canada, in conjunction with the Toronto Chapter, invites you to Toronto Seminar week where 6-7 leading-edge courses will be available for registration. It is the job of the internal audit to find these potential “Kinks in the Armour”, acting as the eyes and ears of upper management, and providing assurance on the state of governance, risk management and control. Is there an effective reporting relationship between your internal audit and the Board? How can you be sure that your internal audit processes are working as well as they could? This 1.5 day session is for internal auditors in positions of leadership, such as Chief Audit Executives and Directors. The agenda will include presentations on key topics as well as a roundtable.
