THE MARIN INDEPENDENT
Angels By The Bay
Angels by the Bay was
another huge success!! With
the MCIL Auxiliary Board
having already raised over
$65,000 in event
sponsorship, the sold out
crowd of over 250 guests
joined us on October 8th at
Deborah January and her 93 year old
the beautiful Corinthian
mother, Eleanor Rosenthal (MCIL Client)
Yacht Club in Tiburon.
Guests enjoyed sweeping views of the City by the Bay
while sipping fine wines from several exclusive wineries,
taking in live jazz with the Indian
Summer Band, and bidding on
fabulous silent auction items. Yes,
the day was simply perfect!
During our gourmet lunch, several
MCIL consumers shared their
empowering success stories,
reminding us why we were there–
to strengthen and support the
mission of the Marin Center for
Guests Roxanne and Alex Najafi
Independent Living. Joanie
of Alex’s Dry Cleaning.
Greggains and Rich Walcoff, our
Masters of Ceremonies, fearlessly led our live auction
and Fund A Need. The event raised over $110,000 in
support of our services for older adults and people with
disabilities in Marin County. To top off an amazing day,
our guests (MCIL Angels) enjoyed an incredible Blue
Angels air show!
Guests Mike Popovich of Mechanics
Bank, Dick Silveira, and Michael Green.
We, at MCIL are proud to move
forward into our 33rd year of
serving Marin County’s older
adults and individuals with
disabilities. It is with a truly
grateful heart that we thank you
for your continued support.
Happy Holidays to you and
yours.

Marin County Recognizes First Annual
Disability History Week in California
Marin Center for Independent
Living and the College of Marin
successfully celebrated
Disability History Week by
hosting the first Disability
History Summit! Last August
the California legislature
passed a resolution proclaiming every second week in
October to be Disability History Week. The resolution
was brought forth by youth throughout the state who
wanted to expose students in California public and
private schools to the history and culture of people with
disabilities.
The Summit was an all day event that
took place on October 20th.
Participants were immersed in
disability culture, history, and pride.
The participants watched the bold and
powerful documentary “Disability
Culture Rap” which explores the
Anthony Tussler, Disability
Rights Advocate and
history, pride, and changing attitudes
Historian, speaks to the
about disability in society. Following
the documentary, participants engaged in an interactive
discussion about disability identity, language, and
culture.
A wide range of
Youth and Youth
Stakeholders
participated in the
event which
included: the Marin
County Office of
Education,
Assemblymember Participants engaging in disability identity exercises
Summit at the College of Marin.
Jared Huffman’s
Office, and
Senator Mark Leno’s Office. Summit attendees recently
formed the Progressive Youth Council (PYC). The
PYC will strategize on ways to expand disability history
week in Marin.

MARIN ACCESS MOBILITY MANAGEMENT
CENTER NOW OPEN!
The Marin Access Mobility Management Center, a new
community based, high-tech transportation management
center, opened on October 1st, 2010. Sponsored by Marin
Transit and operated by Whistlestop, the new center will
coordinate transportation resources to meet the needs of
Marin’s older adults, persons with disabilities and low-income
residents.
The first Marin Access service introduced on October 1 is
One-Stop Transportation Information & Referral to the various
transportation programs available in Marin – public, nonprofit, and for-profit. This service helps callers identify which
type of transportation will best meet their needs. Call Marin
Access at 415-454-0902. The Marin Access website (under
development) will also have a searchable database of
transportation providers.
Over the coming months, Marin Access will be adding the
following: interactive website, pre-paid rider accounts,
expanded education and outreach, donated vehicle program,
and expanded coordination of transportation services. Need
transportation information? Call Marin Access at 415-4540902!
Retuning to Work?
MCIL helps people with disabilities return to work. Mary
Mathews is a certified CWIC, Community Work Incentive
Coordinator. She works with individuals to provide guidance
as they transition from Social Security Benefits back to work.
“Often when people have an accident or illness and have to
go on long term disability benefits, they believe that they are
unable to return to work for fear of losing their benefits. This
just isn’t true.” Mary has helped direct many people to
valuable community resources for retraining in a new career.
One of her clients, after surviving a cancer diagnosis, wanted
to start her own business as a book-keeper. She was able to
get funds from Department of Rehabilitation for tuition and
books, as well as receive counseling about how her new job
would affect her SSDI benefits. She is now well on her way to
enjoying a new job and quality of life. Marin Center for
Independent Living will be offering Work Incentive Training
Seminars in the next few months to help educate clients
about earnings and benefits. Mary can be contacted at ext.
18.

Successful Selection of Private Agency
or Home Health Aide
The number of agencies and individuals providing
home health aides in Marin is expanding. The
choices can be daunting. Here are some simple facts
you should know before you make that call.
Choosing a Private Agency. Many home health
agencies do not employ the workers provided to you.
They are called referral agencies. They find their
home health aides, screen them, including criminal
background checks in some cases, and place them in
your home. You could end up responsible for taxes
and other obligations. The caregivers may be self
bonded and insured. They are considered by the
agency to be independent contractors. You need to
ask what your tax obligations and insurance
requirements might be and get it in writing.
Full service agencies employ the caregivers they refer
to you. If you want to ensure that you have no
employer responsibilities and that you are inquiring for
help from a full service agency, the first question you
should ask is “Are your caregivers your employees?.”
Hiring Privately. There are many highly trained
professional home health aides who prefer a one on
one relationship with their clients. Our registry has a
good reputation for providing qualified, carefully
screened aides with many years of experience. It is a
good option if you are willing to assume the
responsibilities of an employer. We provide referrals
for payroll, worker’s compensation, etc. and assist you
in making a good match.
