The participants watched the bold and powerful documentary “Disability Culture Rap” which explores the Anthony Tussler, Disability Rights Advocate and history, pride, and changing attitudes Historian, speaks to the about disability in society. Following the documentary, participants engaged in an interactive discussion about disability identity, language, and culture. A wide range of Youth and Youth Stakeholders participated in the event which included: the Marin County Office of Education, Assemblymember Participants engaging in disability identity exercises Summit at the College of Marin. Mary Mathews is a certified CWIC, Community Work Incentive Coordinator. She works with individuals to provide guidance as they transition from Social Security Benefits back to work. “Often when people have an accident or illness and have to go on long term disability benefits, they believe that they are unable to return to work for fear of losing their benefits. This just isn’t true.” Mary has helped direct many people to valuable community resources for retraining in a new career. One of her clients, after surviving a cancer diagnosis, wanted to start her own business as a book-keeper. She was able to get funds from Department of Rehabilitation for tuition and books, as well as receive counseling about how her new job would affect her SSDI benefits. She is now well on her way to enjoying a new job and quality of life. Marin Center for Independent Living will be offering Work Incentive Training Seminars in the next few months to help educate clients about earnings and benefits. Mary can be contacted at ext. 18. Successful Selection of Private Agency or Home Health Aide The number of agencies and individuals providing home health aides in Marin is expanding. The choices can be daunting. Here are some simple facts you should know before you make that call. Choosing a Private Agency. Many home health agencies do not employ the workers provided to you. They are called referral agencies. They find their home health aides, screen them, including criminal background checks in some cases, and place them in your home. You could end up responsible for taxes and other obligations. The caregivers may be self bonded and insured. They are considered by the agency to be independent contractors. You need to ask what your tax obligations and insurance requirements might be and get it in writing. Full service agencies employ the caregivers they refer to you. If you want to ensure that you have no employer responsibilities and that you are inquiring for help from a full service agency, the first question you should ask is “Are your caregivers your employees?.” Hiring Privately. There are many highly trained professional home health aides who prefer a one on one relationship with their clients. Our registry has a good reputation for providing qualified, carefully screened aides with many years of experience. It is a good option if you are willing to assume the responsibilities of an employer. We provide referrals for payroll, worker’s compensation, etc. and assist you in making a good match.
