Vol. XXIV No. 73 26 November N Transformational Leadership activity held early 40 executives and middle-level managers of NAMRIA gathered at the Lay Formation Center of the San Carlos Seminary in Guadalupe Viejo, Makati City on 16 November 2012 for a one-day Transformational Leadership activity. The values enrichment activity for NAMRIA officials was spearheaded by the following San Carlos Pastoral Formation resource persons and facilitators: Ate Gaines Marie, Kuya Noel, Kuya Edgar, and Kuya Matt. In his Welcome Remarks on behalf of NAMRIA Administrator Peter N. Tiangco, NAMRIA DA Jose C. Cabanayan, Jr. cited the appropriateness of the activity for the agency especially for the transformation of key officials to become better leaders. To further improve the supervisor-subordinate relationship in the office, he encouraged the participants to listen to the concerns and needs of employees, give them empathy and support, keep the communication lines open, and respect their individual contributions. In their respective sessions, the four resource persons gave the participants important lessons on love and respect. Learning was provided through Ate Gaines Marie’s sharing of her “Parable of the Pushcart” to illustrate affirming the dignity of one’s personhood in the midst of adversity; Kuya Noel’s sharing of the role in his life of his Tatay Berto, “ang tatay na nagturo ng mabuting asal”, to illustrate the transformational process or the journey of the heart; Kuya Edgar’s sharing of the ill-effects of hurtful words and the misdeed’s leading to great repentance and even greater regret; and Kuya Matt’s sharing of his tumultuous journey through life that led him from darkness to light. Among the many items for reflection given by the resource persons were the four sources of the great malady affecting people at present: (1) narcissism in having too much love for oneself; (2) pragmatism in the erroneous belief that everything that works for us is good so no change is necessary; (3) unbridled restlessness stemming from so much multitasking that causes one to lose focus; and (4) loss of interiority in not practicing gratitude in the positive sense with whiners and complainers thinking that the world owes them a big favor. Other gems of thought from the activity include the following: “Hindi puwedeng pagbatayan ang kung ano at meron ka sa buhay para masabi mo na ito ang amount ng dangal ng isang tao”; “Hindi mo man makita ang ginugusto mong pagbabago, simulan mo”; “Marami tayong mabibigat na hinaharap sa buhay but life is a life of choices and not a life of chances”; “Believe in equality, in dignity”; “Kung saan ka itinanim, doon ka mamumunga”; “Never doubt na mali ang naging desisyon mo ng pagbibigay ng iyong sarili; “No rewind, no replay ang buhay kaya kung ano man yung mali natin sa kahapon then let it be, let us rectify what is there to rectify but tanggapin natin nang maluwag sa ating dibdib kung ano naman ang puwedeng tanggapin na lang”; and “Let us embrace each day fully for it will never pass again in our lives.” In her closing remarks, Deputy Administrator Linda SD. Papa thanked the resource persons for the learning experiences they shared with the participants. She likewise reiterated the hope expressed by Ate Gaines Marie that the transformation leadership activity will be continuing. She called on the participants to pray for each other and for NAMRIA in order for the agency to better serve the public. Personnel Management and Development Section staffers headed by Officer In Charge Agnes G. Radam were on hand for the duration of the activity to provide training support. mpb Transformational Leadership activity site in Guadalupe Viejo, Makati City Lay Force ministers (from left) Gaines Marie, Noel, Edgar, and Matt.
