Malcolm Baldrige Award
UW-Stout is the first recipient of the Malcolm Baldrige Award for quality in higher education. Since that time,
UW-Stout has worked with educational institutions in 39 states and 25 countries to share information and assist
schools that are interested in quality improvement through the application of the Baldrige criteria.
The Baldrige Award is presented by the President of the United States to businesses – manufacturing and service,
education and health care – that apply and are judged to be outstanding in seven areas: leadership, strategic
planning, customer and market focus, information and analysis, human resource focus, process management and
business results.

Bowman Hall
Bowman Hall characterizes UW-Stout. At the center of campus, its solid
traditional exterior houses a modern interior devoted to serving students.
The building is home to a variety of student service offices including
Dean of Students, Counseling Center, Disability Services, Multicultural
Student Services, Advisement Center, Registration and Records, Student
Support Services and Financial Aid. Planning, Assessment, Quality and
Research is also housed here.
The building is named for Clyde A. Bowman who came to Stout in 1919
to administer the industrial education division. His tenure spanned the
administrations of three Stout Institute presidents, and he served as a
temporary president upon L. D. Harvey’s death.

Millennium Hall
Aptly named Millennium Hall, the building was constructed in 2000
and dedicated the following year. This technology-based facility was
designed for distance learning; faculty, staff and student training;
telecommunications and computer support; and media production. It is also
available to local business and industry to aid in their needs for on-site or
distance-delivered training and communications.
This state-of-the-art facility is home to UW-Stout’s distance education
classrooms, as well as the offices of Telecommunications and Networking,
Learning Technology Services and the Nakatani Teaching and Learning
Center. The Admissions office relocated to Millennium Hall in 2011.

Harvey Hall Theatre
The 95-year-old, historic theater reopened on April 1,
2011, after a $5.6 million renovation. The theater, originally called Stout Institute
Auditorium, opened on May 30, 1916. The renovation included reconstruction of the stage
and stage rigging, lighting and sound systems, dressing rooms, entrance, vestibules and box
office. In keeping with the historic nature of a 1920s theater, the aesthetics are very warm,
comfortable and welcoming.
Actor James Whitmore, presidential hopeful John F. Kennedy and the Vienna Boys Choir
are just some of the well-known people and performers who have appeared on stage at
historic Harvey Hall Theatre at UW-Stout.

Alma Mater
On the banks of Lake Menomin
Stands our alma mater true,
With tower high and brilliant “S”
For her we’ll dare and do.
We’ll sing her praises many,
We’ll glorify her name
And on throughout the years of time
Our love for Stout proclaim.
Academic Regalia
Many colorful robes are seen at college and university graduation ceremonies. Academic regalia date to the
medieval origins of the university, when most scholars were also members of religious orders. Robes were also
needed in those days to keep warm.
Today’s academic robes are largely standardized, although individual universities often make exceptions. Bachelor’s,
master’s and doctor’s robes are typically black, but differ in style. The bachelor’s gown has pointed sleeves, the
master’s has oblong sleeves, and the doctoral gown has bell-shaped sleeves. The doctor’s gown is also trimmed in
the front with black velvet, with three velvet crossbars on each sleeve.
At UW-Stout, faculty and advanced-degree graduates also wear traditional hoods. The doctor’s hood is longer than
the master’s, and has a wider velvet edging. For both master’s and doctor’s hoods, the hood is lined with academic
colors of the granting institution (UW-Stout’s academic colors are blue and white), and the velvet trimming
marks the academic discipline of the degree.
The UW-Stout Chancellor, University Marshal, Assistant Marshals, and any other faculty member holding a
doctorate who so desires may be seen wearing the UW-Stout doctoral robe. This robe is blue, representing the
university’s academic colors, with black doctoral style velvet edging and sleeve crossbars. The UW-Stout doctoral
hood is lined with blue and white — the academic colors.
Mortarboard tassels for UW-Stout bachelor’s graduates are white for those being awarded a bachelor of arts degree,
yellow for the bachelor of science degree.
UW-Stout Honors College graduates are recognized with a royal blue satin stole. Graduating students who are
members of recognized learned and/or professional societies may be honored for special academic achievement by
wearing regalia such as a neck honor cord, ribbon, or suspended medallion.

University of Wisconsin-Stout
The Naming of UW-Stout
The University known today as UW-Stout is the only institution in the UW
System name for an individual – it’s founder, James Huff Stout. At several
points in the school’s history, its name changed, either as a sign of a change in
administration or as an attempt to change the image of the institution.
Stout Manual Training Schools, 1891 to 1908
Under the auspices of the Menomonie Public Schools, James Huff Stout funded
various educational enterprises. In 1891, manual training and domestic science
training was introduced through the Stout Manual Training School. 1894
brought the introduction of kindergarten classes. In 1899, the Kindergarten
Training School began to prepare kindergarten teachers. A School of Physical
Culture opened in 1901, which provided physical training. In 1903, training
schools for manual training teachers and domestic science teachers were added.
By 1907, a Homemaker’s School had opened and a trade school was planned.
The Stout Institute, 1908 to 1955
To simplify administration and clarify ownership of and responsibility for the
various public and Stout Training Schools, The Stout Institute was formed in
1908. The institute was designed to “provide facilities in the way of buildings,
equipment and teachers, through which young people of both sexes may secure such
instruction and training in industrial and related lines of educational effort as will
enable them to become efficient industrial, social and economic units within their
environment.” In 1911, following Senator Stout’s death, ownership transferred to
the State of Wisconsin.
Stout State College, 1955 to 1964
The Stout Institute Board of Trustees was abolished, and the institution came
under the jurisdiction of the Board of Regents of the State Colleges, a move that
the institute board resisted, fearing a loss of prestige from being a special college. In
retrospect, joining the “league,” as President Fryklund expressed it, proved to be a
distinct advantage to the school and its faculty.
Stout State University, 1964 to 1971
The name change was authorized by the Board of Regents who believed that
the “state colleges had reached another plateau in their development.” Increased
enrollment brought new and enlarged facilities. A traditional focus was
maintained even while new majors were added and new directions were given to
established majors.
University of Wisconsin-Stout, 1971 to present
The Wisconsin State Universities and the University of Wisconsin campuses
merged to form the University of Wisconsin System. UW-Stout was designated
by the Board of Regents as one of only two special mission universities in the UW
System. UW-Stout was to offer focused programs “related to professional careers
in industry, technology, home economics, applied art and the helping professions.”
In March 2007, UW-Stout was designated “Wisconsin’s Polytechnic University”
by the UW System Board of Regents.
