University Life Committee September 4, 2014 Minutes Members Present: Magdy Akladios, Judy Chapmon, Abby Diaz, Kent Divoll, Karen Edwards, Jennifer Fritz, Martha Hood, Alfredo Perez-Davila, David Rachita Members Absent: Stephen Cotton, Renee Fici, Beth Hentges, Sana Zeidan Alternates Present: Patrick Cardenas, Bettye Grigsby, Colden Snow, Kristi Randolph Alternates Absent: Ed Puckett, Mary Ann Shallberg, Casey Roberson, Lei Wu Guest: Julie Garner (for SGA) Action Item Election of Chair – Dr. Magdy Akladios nominated Dr. Beth Hentges. Action: A motion was made by acclamation and seconded to accept the nomination of Dr. Beth Hentges. (Motion passed) Note: Dr. Hentges accepted this nomination via email. Select Meeting Time: After a brief discussion the committee agreed on two meeting options for the fall semester: 3rd Monday; 9:30am – 11:00am 3rd Thursday; 1:30pm – 3:00pm After confirming with the chair via email, it was determined the committee would meet on the 3rd Monday of each month from 9:30 to 11:00. Information/Discussion Items Hand Sanitizers - Dr. Akladios gave an update in the hand-sanitizer project and will be speaking with Ward Martaindale regarding a pilot program. Recycling - Dr. Fritz updated the committee on the recycling project and said they have met with Ward Martaindale and Derrell Means and they are in favor of a pilot program. Dr. Fritz said she needs additional students to help with the data collection and the stipulation is they have to do data collection at night, after the 10:00 p.m. class. She said if you know of any students that would like to volunteer to email her at fritzj@uhcl.edu. David Rachita suggested contacting Lawrance Samaranayake, Managing Director at UFA and Dr. Haney who is in charge of the “freshmen experience” for volunteers. Student Code of Conduct – David Rachita said the Student Code of Conduct was approved by University Council and is printed in the current student handbook. He said there was a discussion this summer regarding having one common code of conduct within the system. Smoking Policy – David Rachita said they are still planning on moving the smoking location at the Delta building and are waiting on the cement pad to be poured for the new location. David said that Derrell Means will be using his staff to do the work. With no further business to discuss, this meeting was adjourned.
