Fire Instructor I Student Syllabus Overview/Scope This is a five day course: 32 hours of instruction and 8 hours of certification evaluation. The course prepares fire and emergency service instructors for planning instruction, using a variety of instructional methods, teaching diverse learners, and evaluating course outcomes. The course also provides guidelines for addressing the critical issues of safety, the legal issues of training, and opportunities for participants to participate in application activities. The target audience is emergency services personnel who have, or may have, a responsibility to teach training classes. Course Prerequisites There are no prerequisites for this course. Learning Objectives After completing the course the student will have met the sections required for Fire Instructor I in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1041 professional qualifications standard. Students who successfully complete the OSU/FST certification process will be certified as Fire Instructor I. The International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) accredits the OSU/FST certification for Fire Instructor I. Information on the certification process is provided on pp. 6 and 7. Text The text for the course is Fire and Emergency Services Instructor, 7th edition, by IFSTA (#36693). Every student must have access to a text in order to prepare for class, study for the certification process, and complete the assignments and activities. While not required, the study guide (#36694) for Fire and Emergency Services Instructor is a valuable tool for preparing for the certification test. Both the text and study guide are available from Fire Protection Publications, 800.654.4055, or from the Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum, (405)-424-1452. Class Schedule The instructor will provide a class schedule at the first class session. A general course schedule, including reading assignments, is provided on pp. 4 and 5. Each quiz will cover information provided in class the previous day. The quizzes are listed in the course schedule. You must earn a minimum of 70 total points from the four (4) quizzes to be able to participate in the certification process on the last day of the course. This is 70% of the total points possible on the quizzes. Pre-Course Reading Assignment This course covers almost 300 pages of information in the textbook. It is simply not possible to read all of this information for the first time once the class has begun AND study for the quizzes and prepare for the student presentation. You are strongly encouraged to complete the reading assignments for all the units prior to the first day of class. The specific pages for each unit are listed in the right-hand column of the course schedule. Presentation You are required to do a 10 to 15 minute presentation from a prepared lesson plan as part of the course final evaluation. The lesson plan will be provided during class and you will have an opportunity to practice the various parts of the lesson plan during class. The grading elements and criteria are listed below. You must earn a 'Satisfactory' on all nine (9) elements to pass the presentation. 1. Clearly states purpose of presentation and establishes relevance and benefit to the learner. 2. Implements motivation strategy according to the lesson plan. 3. Incorporates appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication techniques in presentation. 4. Asks appropriate questions to facilitate 2-way communication during presentation. 5. Engages students in active learning process. 6. Presents and applies all content points identified in the lesson plan. 7. Properly uses audiovisual materials and equipment. 8. Facilitates application of manipulative skills as identified in lesson plan in a safe manner. 9. Summarizes presentation. The goal of the instructor is to help you be successful during the course. You should immediately contact the instructor if you have any questions about the course or course work. Attendance Policy You are expected to attend each class session. Because each class session is 8 hours, a large amount of information will be missed by an absence. If an emergency arises, immediately inform the instructor and every effort will be made to accommodate the situation. However, every student must attend at least 75% of the course to be eligible for course credit. Academic Dishonesty Policy Academic misconduct includes cheating, plagiarism, falsification of records, unauthorized possession of examinations, intimidation, and any and all other actions that may improperly affect the evaluation of a student’s academic performance or achievement; assisting others in any such act; or attempts to engage in such acts. Any incident of academic misconduct will result in the student being dropped from the course and the sponsoring agency notified of the incident. Course Participation The course utilizes open discussions, individual activities, and small group activities to achieve the outcome objectives. Every student is expected to: come to course prepared to actively participate in discussions, read the text prior to the next day's modules, complete all homework assignments, respect the beliefs, opinions, and values of other students, and have an open mind about the issues being discussed. Skill #1 will be tested each time. The 2nd skill to be tested will be randomly selected from the remaining skills. Skill #1: The candidate shall teach a 10 to 15 minute emergency services class from a prepared lesson plan including set-up of the learning environment, gathering materials, delivering the lesson, operating audiovisual equipment and adjusting to changing conditions so that the lesson’s learning objectives are achieved. Skill #2: The candidate shall complete a Course Authorization Request and a Form 10 from information provided on a simulated in-house class. The information must be recorded accurately. Skill #3: The candidate shall outline an adaptation to a lesson plan or adjust a presentation for continuity, so that a lesson's objectives are accomplished and a safe learning environment is maintained. Skill #4: Given a simulated scenario, identify how to organize the learning environment to achieve lighting, climate, noise, seating, audiovisual equipment, teaching aids, and safety considerations. Skill #5: Given a skill sheet, evaluation requirements, and a simulated skills demonstration, evaluate the student’s performance so that the skill sheet is properly completed, student success determined, and feedback provided to the student.
