Student Syllabus
Overview/Scope
This is a five day course: 32 hours of instruction and 8 hours of certification evaluation.
The course prepares fire and emergency service instructors for planning instruction,
using a variety of instructional methods, teaching diverse learners, and evaluating
course outcomes. The course also provides guidelines for addressing the critical issues
of safety, the legal issues of training, and opportunities for participants to participate in
application activities. The target audience is emergency services personnel who have,
or may have, a responsibility to teach training classes.
Course Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Learning Objectives
After completing the course the student will have met the sections required for Fire
Instructor I in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1041 professional
qualifications standard. Students who successfully complete the OSU/FST certification
process will be certified as Fire Instructor I. The International Fire Service Accreditation
Congress (IFSAC) accredits the OSU/FST certification for Fire Instructor I. Information
on the certification process is provided on pp. 6 and 7.
Text
The text for the course is Fire and Emergency Services Instructor, 7th edition, by IFSTA
(#36693). Every student must have access to a text in order to prepare for class, study
for the certification process, and complete the assignments and activities.
While not required, the study guide (#36694) for Fire and Emergency Services
Instructor is a valuable tool for preparing for the certification test. Both the text and study
guide are available from Fire Protection Publications, 800.654.4055, or from the
Oklahoma State Firefighters Museum, (405)-424-1452.
Class Schedule
The instructor will provide a class schedule at the first class session. A general course
schedule, including reading assignments, is provided on pp. 4 and 5.
