We are pleased that you have chosen to complete a part of your studies here. With your plan, you are taking on a special challenge: going to study in a foreign country and in a foreign city, and in a language that may still be foreign to you. That takes courage and a great deal of commitment! We will do our best to support you during your stay, for we want your experience at KIMEP to be a positive one – both academically and personally. KIMEP is the oldest western-style university in Kazakhstan and offers the broad range of study programs. People from many countries study, teach, and work in the university’s 3 faculties and 11 departments. Approximately 13 percent of our 3000 students and almost 80 percent of our professors are of foreign nationality. Many of our successful research projects are based on international collaboration. We see internationality as both a challenge and a mark of quality. The Department of International Academic Mobility is responsible for promoting international activities at KIMEP, including student activities. This is a particularly important point for us, for as a student you, too, contribute towards the internationality of the university: You bring us your experiences from your university at home, and you take your experiences in Kazakhstan back to your own country. And so we encourage you to make use of your time and opportunities in Almaty: Get to know people! Talk to people, ask questions, and exchange ideas with others! Don’t be afraid to enter into discussion with your fellow students, or to explain your perspectives to your instructors. You will learn the most about us that way, and we will benefit from your showing us that in addition to the “KIMEP way,” there are other ways, too. On this note, we wish you all the best and a most interesting stay at our University, in the city of Almaty, and in Kazakhstan. Academic practices and principles KIMEP follows the credit system in evaluating students’ performance (read more about it in the next section). Teaching, studying, and working at KIMEP are conducted in English. At the second year every student is assigned a faculty member as his or her academic advisor. In general, students should expect Western teaching and studying methods that imply pro-active student participation in seminars and workshops, or, in other words, more independent way of learning and studying; they are going to work in teams, do group assignments and presentations, and conduct their own research. Though attendance to all classes is crucial in evaluating the student’s progress, many professors do not take official attendance, but seminars and coursework are very demanding and students are highly recommended not to miss classes at all. There is no discrimination at KIMEP on racial, national, sexual, religious, or any other terms. Kazakhstan students live and study together with their international classmates. Approximately 160 faculty members, or about 40 percent of total faculty, are from 30 different countries such as the USA, the UK, Canada, India, Italy, Bangladesh, and others who hold terminal degrees from recognized universities worldwide. Among other innovations is the students’ evaluation of teachers’ performance. Monitoring is done once a semester and then passed to the faculty academic councils for further quality assurance work. It should be also noted that teacher-student relations demand high performance from each other, a feature that reflects mutual respect and openness. The Academic Year consists of two semesters Fall and Spring. There are additional short semesters in summer: Summer 1 and Summer 2. Summer 2 is presented by the International Summer School. Students may design their own schedule. Minimum 1 course and maximum 6 courses are allowed to register per regular semester. Maximum 3 courses are allowed for registration in Summer 1 and 1 course only in Summer 2 semester. Classes may last from 50 to 75 minutes. Some classes imply lecture and tutorials sessions. Typically a semester long course will meet for forty-five class contact hours and is worth three credits. However, some courses are worth more than three credits and some worth less. To earn a degree from KIMEP University, a student completes a set of credit requirements for a particular program. Another requirement for graduation is a minimum level of scholastic performance, which is measured by the grade point average or GPA. KIMEP University uses a letter grading system and follows North American and ECTS credit systems. More detailed Academic Policies and Procedures may be found in KIMEP Catalog. 13 Academic calendar Academic calendar 2015-2016: Fall Spring Summer1 Summer2 (15 weeks, excluding Examination period) (15 weeks, excluding Examination period) (6 weeks, 75 min classes) (For Modules by KIMEP and visiting professors) (3 weeks, 150 min classes) Advising starts Tuesday, June 30, 2015 Monday, November 23, 2015 Monday, April 04, 2016 Monday, April 04, 2016 Registration for 4th year undergraduate students, Honored students, students with special needs and all Master students begins (1/3 payment and Student Fee are required prior to registration for Fall semester) Tuesday, July 28, 2015 Tuesday, December 15, 2015 Tuesday, April 26, 2016 Tuesday, April 26, 2016 Registration for 3d year Undergraduate students begins (1/3 payment and Student Fee are required prior to registration for Fall semester) Friday, July 31, 2015 Friday, December 18, 2015 Friday, April 29, 2016 Friday, April 29, 2016 Registration for 2d year Undergraduate students begins (1/3 payment and Student Fee are required prior to registration for Fall semester) Tuesday, August 04, 2015 Tuesday, December 22, 2015 Tuesday, May 03, 2016 Tuesday, May 03, 2016 Registration for 1t year Undergraduate students begins (1/3 payment and Student Fee are required prior to registration for Fall semester) Friday, August 07, 2015 Friday, December 25, 2015 Friday, May 06, 2016 Friday, May 06, 2016 Registration for non-degree students begins (100% payment for all courses + Student Fee is required) Monday, August 10, 2015 Monday, December 28, 2015 Tuesday, May 10, 2016 Tuesday, May 10, 2016 Registration ends Sunday, August 23, 2015 Sunday, January 10, 2016 Sunday, May 22, 2016 Sunday, July 10, 2016 Classes start Monday, August 24, 2015 Monday, January 11, 2016 Monday, May 23, 2016 Monday, July 11, 2016 Add/Drop period 24 -30 August, 2015 11 -17 January, 2016 23 -24 May, 2016 11 - 12 July, 2016 Late Registration period for all students (need Instructors’ approval) 31 August - 06 September, 2015 18 - 24 January, 2016 25 -26 May, 2016 - Withdraw from a Course with 80% Tuition Refund (online) 31 August - 06 September, 2015 18 - 24 January, 2016 - - Withdraw from a Course with 60% Tuition Refund (online) 07 -13 September 2015 25 -31 January, 2016 - - 14 Withdraw from a Course with 40% Tuition Refund (online) 14 -20 September 2015 01 - 07 February, 2016 - - Withdraw from a Course with 20% Tuition Refund (online) 21 - 27 September, 2015 8 -14 February, 2016 - - (after this date there are no refunds for withdrawals from courses) Sunday, September 27, 2015 Sunday, February 14, 2016 - - Second Payment Deadline (second 1/3 of total tuition is due) [1] Friday, September 25, 2015 Friday, February 12, 2016 - - “I” grades from previous semester convert into “F”s (7’th week of classes) 05 - 11 October, 2015 22-28 February, 2016 First Mid-term Assesments Submission of Scores (6’th week of classes) 28 September - 4 October, 2015 15 -21 February, 2016 - - Reading week 12 - 18 October, 2015 7 -13 March, 2016 - - Third Payment Deadline (final 1/3 of total tuition is due) Friday, October 23, 2015 Friday, March 11, 2016 - - Second Mid-term Assesments Submission of Scores (12’th week of classes) 9 - 15 November, 2015 28 March - 3 April, 2016 - - Last Day to Withdraw from a Course with grade of “W” (online) Friday, December 11, 2015 Wednesday, May 04, 2016 Friday, July 01, 2016 Friday, July 29, 2016 Classes End Saturday, December 12, 2015 Wednesday, May 04, 2016 Friday, July 01, 2016 Friday, July 29, 2016 Final Assesments Starts, Examination Period 13, 14, 15, 18 - 23 December, 2015 5,6,8,10 -15 May, 2016 Friday, July 01, 2016 Friday, July 29, 2016 Semester Ends Wednesday, December 23, 2015 Sunday, May 15, 2016 Friday, July 01, 2016 Friday, July 29, 2016 All grades officially submitted Wednesday, December 30, 2015 Monday, May 23, 2016 Friday, July 08, 2016 Friday, August 05, 2016 Change Grade Forms due Friday, January 15, 2016 Monday, May 30, 2016 Friday, July 15, 2016 Friday, August 12, 2016 Graduation Ceremony - Saturday, May 21, 2016 - - * please see catalogue for KIMEP make up policy 15 Tuition and fees Tuition at KIMEP is paid based on the number of courses a student registers for in any given semester. Life in Almaty Adaptation Kazakhstan might still be seen as a rather unusual expatriate destination; there are few online resources or guide books to help prospective expats prepare for their new life. Newcomers to KIMEP are recommended to get advice on interested questions from current students or International Relations Office. Below we present some essential matters to know about. Language barrier in Kazakhstan While Russian is acknowledged as the ‘language of business’ in Kazakhstan there has been a push to increase the use of Kazakh and to re-introduce lost traditions in the country. Most expatriates working in Kazakhstan will need to learn Russian as this is universally understood in the workplace. However, even a few words of Kazakh will be highly appreciated by the locals. For most foreign workers, however, this is not that much of an issue at work since most companies that employ non-natives are multinational companies with English-speaking managers. Still, living in Kazakhstan would be a more pleasant and enriching experience for an expat to, at least, try to learn the native language. Although there is some discussion about altering the alphabet and moving the Kazakh language over to Roman script, both Kazakh and Russian are written in the Cyrillic alphabet. Thus it makes sense to learn Cyrillic letters to adapt to reading street names, understand what you are buying in a restaurant or supermarket, or saying destinations to taxi driver. Most Kazakhstanis are keen to learn English and there is no shortage of opportunities to learn Russian and/or Kazakh through a language exchange agreement. International students are offered to enroll into classes of Intensive Kazakh/Russian languages (both academic and non-academic) available at the World Languages Program at KIMEP. Contact person: Kamiya Abdulkhakimova, Program Development Manager (Email: kamiya@kimep.kz; Tel:+7 (727) 270-44-83, office 208/adm). [Buh-ghun ah-uh-wa-rye-yh son-dai zhahk-sy] It is a beautiful day. Segodnya prekrasnyy den’. Bugun aurayie tamasha. Bureaucracy in Kazakhstan The post Soviet bureaucracy in Kazakhstan is highly developed, confusing and often frustrating to both expatriates and Kazakhstanis alike. The bureaucracy might be often the biggest cultural shock for expatriates arriving in Kazakhstan. On arrival all expatriates are required to register with the authorities (KIMEP will arrange this) and renew the registration each time they leave the country or every 90 days if they have not gone abroad in that time. A passport has to be carried at all times and shown to the authorities on request. Remain polite at all times and keep a sense of humour and you will find most people willing to do their best to help. Business culture in Kazakhstan One thing also to learn when living among the locals is respect for hierarchy, especially in the family. People in Kazakhstan are very particular about social rankings and disrespect for a senior is considered an offense. Kazakhstanis want to be perceived to be helpful and always avoid letting people down. The Soviet legacy also means that peoples’ roles within an organisation are very heavily defined with a clear chain of responsibility. This combination means that people will often avoid giving a negative answer to any question and will simply ‘table’ difficult issues hoping that they will be resolved by someone else. Make an effort to understand the structure of any business, who is responsible for what areas and address all queries to the appropriate person. Expats will also have to get used to repeating their queries a number of times without getting frustrated. 39 Hospitality in Kazakhstan New arrivals should not be surprised if they get invited to the home on a Kazakh they’ve recently met. If invited for a meal it is polite to bring a small gift for the hosts and to try a bit of every food offered. If offering flowers to a host, never bring an even number of flowers. It is acceptable for a guest to be late for less than 30 minutes. However, anyone who expects to be late for such an invitation is expected to make a call informing the host of the late arrival; not doing so is considered rude. An expatriate in Kazakhstan who is honored with an invitation should not be surprised to be served bread which is considered sacred in this land. At any gathering almost everyone will be expected to make a toast. Expats invited to a function will not be expected to make their toast in Russian or Kazakh, the simple act of making the toast is usually enough. However, if you know in advance that a toast will be required it is worth getting a local to teach you a short sentence or phrase in one of the local languages. The extra effort will always be noticed and appreciated. People can appear superficially rude on the streets so do not expect people to hold doors or assist with a child’s stroller. However, expats will soon see that this is very much a superficiality, as Kazakhstani people are extremely friendly and very hospitable. Food in Kazakhstan The traditional Kazakh diet is heavily meat based. Vegetable intake, especially greens, is often deficient. The Kazakh national dish is called Beshbarmak, known as “five fingers” because it is traditionally eaten with your hands, is made of lamb or mutton, noodles, and onions. Horse meat is very popular, often served in large uncut pieces which have been boiled. While Kazakhs are not very religious, most do not eat pork. Be aware of this if you are dining out with Kazakhs or planning a dinner at home. Also many dishes that are made elsewhere with pork (such as dumplings or sausage) are made with beef or mutton here. Other popular foods reflect the presence of various ethnic groups that have left their mark on Kazakh culture and include Uzbek plov (fried rice and meat), Russian pelmeny (meat pie), and Uighur manty (dumplings filled with ground meat, onion, pumpkin). Korean dishes are common, particularly salads, due to the influence of Korean immigrants. Tea is served several times a day, while fermented mare’s and camel’s milks are served on special occasions. If you’re a vegetarian, you’re probably thinking there’s nothing for you in Kazakhstan. In Almaty, however, the situation is slowly changing. But if you’re cooking your own food, you’ll be more than satisfied. Kazakhstan has some excellent products available at little markets everywhere. You will be amazed with the taste and availability of fresh organic veggies at low price! Inexperienced people may be sensitive to Kazakh dairy (horse and camel milk) and meat products (horse meat, smoked meat, meat delicacies); we recommended avoiding overdo in trying unusual meals for the first time. Dress in Kazakhstan Kazakhstanis tend to dress a lot more formally than most Americans or Europeans. As such, casual clothing, particularly technical outerwear in the cold winter, will immediately identify someone as an expat. Most nightclubs will have a dress code so don’t expect to go dancing 40 in jeans and trainers. Women face few social restrictions on dress, at least in the cities. The temperature range, particularly in the north of the country, is extreme (-40 to 35° Celcius), and as such Kazakhstanis have learned to respect the weather. It is not unusual to see people, particularly children, bundled up in thick coats, scarves, hats and boots in relatively warm temperatures. If you are not similarly attired expect to be stopped by the older generation and gently advised to be dress in warmer clothing. Religion and race in Kazakhstan Kazakhstan is a secular state, home to people of many different ethnicities. Kazakhs are proud of the diversity of their population and the country strives to promote peace between religions worldwide. There is freedom of worship but expatriates should not proselytize. The majority of the population (about 70 percent) are Muslim with the second largest religious grouping being Orthodox Christian. Both Eid and Orthodox Christmas are marked as public holidays. Alcohol is freely available, although imported wines are extremely expensive. Pork is also available, but only at certain stores. Furthermore, pork products are always kept separate from the other meat products (Halal). Most Kazakhstanis will enjoy a drink or, if not, will not object to your drinking. When inviting people for a meal do check their dietary preferences beforehand to ensure that they can eat the food you are serving. Basic Kazakh etiquettes Etiquette and cultural norms related to acceptable and unacceptable behavior vary between urban and rural Kazakhs. As a rule, rural Kazakhs tend to follow the cultural norms more strictly. Kazakh men always shake hands with someone they know when they see each other for the first time in a day. Usually the younger man initiates this, and shows respect by extending both hands and shaking the older man’s hand. Both Kazakhs and non-Kazakhs remove their shoes when inside a house. Guests always remove their shoes at the door and often put on a pair of slippers provided by the host or hostess. Central Asian streets often can be very dusty or muddy, so wearing shoes indoors is a serious social offense. Greetings are also very structured in Kazakhstan. In Kazakh culture, elder women and men are greeted with certain phrases showing respect. A Russian system of patronymics is still widely used. Public affection between friends is very common. Women and girls often hold hands as they walk; boys wrestle and often hook arms or walk with their arms around each other. Kissing cheeks and embracing is perfectly acceptable between good friends. 41 Tourist center Newly arrived students and tourists of Almaty are recommended to visit the Tourist Center to get a free Almaty city map and a guide book.
