Cleveland Hillel Foundation Annual Report 2013-2014 EST. 1947 Cleveland Foundation CULTIVATING JEWISH LIFE ON CAMPUS AND IN THE COMMUNITY Dear Friends, The success of any organization or business isn’t dependent upon one person - it’s “team work” that makes any group excel. That’s exactly how it is at Cleveland Hillel. It’s our hard working staff, our student leaders and participants, Board of Trustees, donors, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland and the faculty and staff on the campuses we serve that makes Cleveland Hillel what it is. This past year, through everyone’s collaboration, we provided more than 524 undergraduate programs on the CWRU, Cleveland State, Oberlin and John Carroll campuses and another 53 programs for graduate students and young professionals. Jewish undergraduate and graduate students from The Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Institute of Music, Ursuline, Baldwin Wallace, Notre Dame, Cuyahoga Community College and Lakeland Community Colleges are invited and encouraged to attend our programs too. Perhaps the most exciting leap forward this past year has been the successful fundraising and planning for our new Hillel building, next door to our current home. We expect to move into the new Norma and Albert Geller Hillel Student Center at Case Western Reserve University in 2015! We are grateful to the Gellers for their magnanimous gift, the help and support of CWRUs Development staff, Brian Sokol, Chuck Miller and Bruce Loessin and, as always, President Barbara Snyder. The Building Committee chair, Harvey Siegel, the Campaign chair, Bill Heller and past president Zack Paris, have given hundreds of hours toward making this dream closer to reality for our students. I can’t thank them enough. As always, The Jewish Federation of Cleveland has been a fabulous partner in this, and all of our efforts. While we are getting closer to our campaign goal, we still have a way to go and look forward to speaking with anyone interested in making a capital campaign gift. The new Norma & Albert Geller Hillel will provide increased visibility for Hillel with a main entrance on Euclid Avenue. The 12,000 square foot center will provide places for students to mingle, socialize, study, enjoy multi-faceted programming and attend holiday and Shabbat services. The outdoor plaza will increase our connection to the CWRU campus and allow everyone to take advantage of green space. Flexible classrooms will accommodate hundreds of students for multiple activities during the academic year. We will also have a kosher food option. Hillel hosted two new programs for the community and students this year. The first, held in the fall, was “Crossroads to Future”, a look at the job market in Cleveland today and With Blessings, Nancy K. Levin, President tomorrow. Upper classmen learned how professional fields will interconnect and what job opportunities will exist for those who choose to call Cleveland home. The spring program, “Campus Super Stars,” gave vocal and instrumental music students the stage to perform and win monetary prizes. We have already begun working to enhance these programs, and others, for the upcoming school year! I’d like to welcome our interim Executive Director, Jordan Rothkopf, our new Undergraduate Jewish Student Life Director, Matt Newman and our new Israel Fellow, Sapir Shimony. I know these dynamic professionals will find working with our “seasoned” pros Jill Ross, Andrea Weiser, Kim Littman and Kathleen McCarthy in Cleveland and Rabbi Shimon Brand, Samia Mansour & new program associate Isabel Sherrel in Oberlin. Together this “village” of professionals will continue to provide creative and stimulating programming to all of the students and young professionals we serve. I look forward to welcoming you all at the events we have planned for the new building. As always, I thank everyone involved in making Cleveland Hillel what it is. Thank you for your generosity of time, work and financial support. Most importantly, THANK YOU for your continued support of Jewish student life and all that it means to the future of the Jewish people. BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS Cleveland Metro Undergrad Hillel @ CWRU, Hillel @ CSU Hillel @ JCU Hillel Students at the Kosher Rib Burnoff Students from Case Western Reserve, Cleveland State and John Carroll Universities and Oberlin College work with staff members to plan and execute their social, cultural, community, Israeli and Judaic programming. The student population at each school has varying program interests so scheduling and developing diverse programs to meet those needs is skillfully planned by Hillel staff and students. Many of the Jewish undergraduate students who attend the Cleveland Institute of Music and Cleveland Institute of Art participate in the CWRU Hillel events while Jewish students at Lakeland, Ursuline, Notre Dame, Tri C, and Baldwin Wallace have an option of which Hillel programs they chose to participate in. “I feel like Hillel is synonymous with community. Without it, I wouldn’t have felt so supported in the expression of my Jewish identity.” Nichole Simonivic, John Carroll University, class of 2016 “Without Hillel, I wouldn’t have had anywhere to go for Shabbat dinners. Hillel allows me to connect with other Jews on campus and maintain my Jewish identity” Becca Dreyer, CWRU, class of 2014 “Ever since I came to Case, I have found Hillel to be a ‘home away from home’. It has provided me with countless meals, allowed me to celebrate the holidays with peers in a way that is most unique, been a place to rest between classes and given me friends for life. I’m looking forward to being a part of JCLE as I begin my Master’s Degree at Case.” Mathew Barkan, CWRU, class of 2014 John Carroll Hillel students participated In a University sponsored diversity panel Banoti, our women’s programming group, picked apples for Rosh Hashanah. CUTTING EDGE Hillel @ Oberlin Past & current Hillel chairs Oberlin Hillel provides students a way to connect with their Jewish identity in a variety of ways including celebrating Shabbat and holidays, attending a variety of religious services, helping run and participate in the Kosher-Halal Co-op, joining a variety of student groups like the Oberlin Zionists and the Jewish Women’s Group and becoming involved in many cultural, artistic and religious activities. Special lectures, visiting scholars and mini-courses on an array of topics, round out a stimulating environment for Jewish students at Oberlin. The first all-night Passover seder was held “Hillel is a real community that helped me feel comfortable and accepted in my first year at Oberlin. I got to explore Jewish practices and values with a group of people who are passionate about those things and want to build a vibrant Jewish life. It feels great to be a part of a group that cares so much about the things we do and supports one another.” Talia Rodwin, Oberlin College, class of 2017 The annual Muslim – Jewish community picnic held at the beginning & end of each school year Challah Cappella is Oberlin’s first and only Jewish a cappella group. COMMUNITY BUILDING JCLE/ Graduate Students Over 200 young professionals attend the annual JCLE Masquerade celebrating Purim. The Jooze Cruise sailed the Cuyahoga and Lake Erie with 140 young professionals. JCLE volunteers at Race for the Place benefits The Gathering Place. JCLE, now in its fourth year, is one of Cleveland Hillel’s newer programs. It provides an array of activities for 21-29 year old graduate students and young professionals living in Cleveland. By participating in social programming, sporting events, civic engagement opportunities, networking opportunities and Shabbat dinners and holiday celebrations, JCLE reaches out to students and young professionals new to Cleveland as well as those who have been in town for a while. The Heart of Rock and Roll at the House of Blues was a smashing success! “My favorite Hillel programs were graduate student Shabbat dinners. Without Hillel, I wouldn’t have had a social network in Cleveland beyond graduate school. To me Hillel is synonymous with “gezellig”, which is a Dutch word meaning everything from cozy to friendly, from comfortable to relaxing and from enjoyable to gregarious. It connotes time spent with loved ones, seeing a friend after a long absence or general togetherness.” Shira Strauss, Case Western Reserve University, JD, 2014 “JCLE is a great opportunity for young Jewish people to meet in a social setting. As someone new to Cleveland, JCLE events are an easy way to see what Cleveland has to offer. Without Hillel, I wouldn’t have had a place to celebrate Passover and the High Holidays.” Alex Apple, CWRU Dental Student PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Summer Internship Program A community service component is a part of the SIP program The Summer Internship Program, celebrating its 7th year, places rising college juniors and seniors in paid internships in Cleveland area businesses and non-profit organizations for ten weeks during the summer. The program provides a great way for students to gain professional skills while stimulating interest in careers and life in Cleveland, so they will choose to return after they graduate. An engaging orientation, wonderful professional experiences, opportunities to experience Cleveland in a unique way, chances to socialize, volunteer and work with their peers and meeting business leaders in town are all important components of the Summer Internship Program. A tour of downtown CLE, included the Arcade HUGE THANKS TO OUR SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS AND THEIR EMPLOYERS! I had an opportunity unparalleled to my friends in other cities working at the NRP Group. The opportunity to meet people who are so invested in various aspects of Northeast Ohio made me realize all that Cleveland has to offer professionally and culturally.” Jared Rubin, University of Indiana, class of 2015 “The Cleveland Hillel Summer Internship Program presented me with a great opportunity to utilize my technical skills in an environment that provided me with experience that I plan on using for years to come. I met other interns, like myself, and together we were able to discover how great of a city Cleveland truly is. Best of all, I was able to engage with other Jewish students which gave me a sense of belonging, something I cannot say about most internships.” Alec Torch, Ohio University, class of 2016 Program & Special Events During the Year CROSSROADS TO THE FUTURE Held on October 16, 2013, Crossroads to the Future looked at Cleveland today and tomorrow through a lively panel discussion. The speakers also discussed the high quality of life in Greater Cleveland and explained the many job opportunities that will be available for those young adults who choose to remain in Cleveland after they graduate or return to Cleveland. Panelists included Stephanie Y. McHenry, Vice President for Business Affairs & Finance at Cleveland State University, Dr. David C. Kaelber, MD, PhD, FAAP and FACP, an internist, pediatrician, Chief Medical Informatics Officer of the Metrohealth System and Director of the Center for Clinical Informatics Research and Education, Jonathan Leiken, partner at Jones Day and Chair of the Board of the Cleveland metropolitan Bar Association and Oleg Fridman, who with his partners, all recent graduates of Case Western Reserve University, co-founded ONOSYS, an online restaurant ordering company, recently purchased by LivingSocial. The event, held at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History was attended by 125 community members and students. CAMPUS SUPER STARS Cleveland Hillel joined the list of several other Hillels across the country when it invited vocal and instrumental music students from area universities to participate in Campus Super Stars. Auditions were held in March and the top ten acts were invited to compete for prizes on April 10th at Night Town where Brendan Ring, the owner of Night Town, served as the Master of Ceremonies. Over 100 sponsors and friends of Hillel watched the incredible talent as Susan Bengston, Eric Graf and Jaewon Kim won first, second and third prizes, respectively. Serving as judges for the evening were Erin Cameron Miller, the General Manager of Cain Park and Donald Rosenberg, former music critic of the Plain Dealer and immediate past president of the Music Critics Association of North America. Campaign for the Albert & Norma Geller Hillel Student Center at Case Western Reserve University Norma & Albert Geller Hillel’s new student center, is scheduled to open in 2015, replacing the current home which opened in 1972. The building, which provides a prominent spot fronting Euclid Avenue, will provide a “home away from home” for the growing number of Jewish students attending CWRU, as well as neighboring Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland Institute of Music and students from the eight other colleges and universities Cleveland Hillel serves. The new building will perpetuate and enrich the legacy of the Cleveland Hillel Foundation. The opportunity to help create a new, vibrant Hillel student center is deeply rewarding to the Albert and Norma Geller. We are so very grateful to them for their exceptional gift.
