The aircraft are being converted from passenger planes to freighters. Dr. Andreas Sperl, CEO of EADS Elbe Flugzeugwerke Dresden GmbH, carried out the official handover to DHL subsidiary European Air Transport GmbH (EAT) in Leipzig, Germany. Roland Werner, State Secretary of Traffic at the State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Labor and Transport of the German state of Saxony, was present for the event. DHL Express, the world leader in international express shipping, purchased 18 Airbus A300600 passenger planes to modernize its European air fleet. EADS Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden is converting the planes into freighter through mid-2013. “The best indicator that you’re doing a good job is when a customer places another order. That’s why we’re proud to have the opportunity to work for DHL, the global market leader in express and logistics, again. I’m happy to hand over the first of 18 converted A300-600 aircraft to EAT Leipzig,” said Sperl. “DHL and EFW have had a long and mutually beneficial partnership. Almost exactly 14 years ago, on December 12, 1997, the first converted A300-B4200 was delivered to EAT Brussels. Another six aircraft were converted by EFW in the years to follow and operated by DHL. This current contract from DHL is a historic one for EFW. It’s the largest order we’ve ever received. The aircraft DHL purchased were in outstanding condition even before conversion and they’ll be an important part of the modernization of EAT’s fleet. It’s also a good day for the state of Saxony, the home of Elbe Flugzeugewerke. Two global market leaders in their industries are working together in Saxony, creating jobs and a future for the people of our state.” Deutsche Post DHL The Mail & Logistics Group Berlin Press Office Hallesches Ufer 60 10963 Berlin Phone Fax 030 627 81-33 33 030 627 81-32 41 Email pressestelle.berlin@deutschepost.de www.dhl.com 1/3 The A300-600 offers completely new and modern technology compared to its predecessor, the A300-B4-200. With a payload of some 49 tons, it can carry up to five tons more cargo, fly 900 kilometers farther, consume up to 20 percent less fuel and generates less noise than its predecessor. By introducing the A300-600 as a mid-range freighter, the company ensures continuously high reliability and on-time performance for years to come. “At the same time this brings us a big step closer to our goal to reduce our carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2020,” said Markus Otto, CEO of EAT Leipzig. DHL will put the new Airbus into operation on November 21, 2011, on the Leipzig/Halle-Frankfurt-London/Luton route. “What’s more, we’re going to hire 140 new employees for a long period of time as a result of introducing the A300-600 aircraft. So we’re keeping our promise to create more jobs in the region.” “DHL’s activity at its air freight hub in Leipzig/Hall has led to a number of additional companies settling near the airport and is seen as a promising job generator for the entire state of Saxony and central Germany. This major contract for converting the aircraft awarded by DHL to EADS Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH in Dresden has secured even more jobs for Saxony,” said Roland Werner. He also welcomed the use of quieter aircraft because this relieves residents from aircraft noise. The DHL Air Hub in Leipzig/Halle has been the operational base for most of DHL’s European air fleet since the beginning of 2008. Each day more than 55 aircraft service intra-European and intercontinental express flight routes from there. Deutsche Post DHL has invested over €300 million in the hub. More than 3,000 employees ensure that 1,500 tons of freight are routed through the hub each day. Since September 2011, another DHL division – DHL Supply Chain – is building a €14-million, multi-user logistics center right next to the airport. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2014. The core competencies of the two DHL divisions – international time definite delivery services at Express and customized contract logistics at Supply Chain – will be bundled there and 175 jobs will be created. – End – Media Contact: Deutsche Post DHL Berlin Press office Barbara Scheil / Manfred Hauschild Deutsche Post DHL The Mail & Logistics Group Berlin Press Office Hallesches Ufer 60 10963 Berlin Phone Fax 030 627 81-33 33 030 627 81-32 41 Email pressestelle.berlin@deutschepost.de www.dhl.com 2/3 Phone: +49 (0) 30 62781-3333 Email: pressestelle.berlin@deutschepost.de EADS Elbe Flugzeugwerke Dresden Press and Public Relations Christopher Profitlich Phone: +49 (0) 351 8839-2516 Email: Christopher.profitlich@efw.eads.net DHL – The Logistics company for the world DHL is the global market leader in the logistics industry and “The Logistics company for the world”. Award honors the DAX company for the most-transparent policies in human resources Board Member for Personnel Scheurle: “Diversity and transparency contribute to long-term business success” Bonn, November 16, 2011: Deutsche Post DHL, the world’s leading mail and logistics company, has just received two awards for its human-resources policies. The Group’s diversity management was honored with the first-ever German Diversity Award 2011, which was presented under the motto of “Thinking, Talking, Acting and Working Together – Diversity as an Opportunity.” The award was sponsored by the German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche, the consultancy McKinsey&Company and the consumer business Henkel. The price was awarded in four categories to companies, individuals and innovative projects that encourage a working environment characterized by diversity in Germany. Deutsche Post DHL also received this year’s award given by the Human Capital Club e.V., a group established in 2001 that includes many partner organizations in German-speaking regions, including the German Association of Human Resources Management and the German Network of Business Ethics. Here Deutsche Post DHL was awarded as the DAX company with the most-transparent personnel policies. “Deutsche Post DHL’s core business is all about crossing borders and facilitating exchange and communication. We can do our job only if our employees work together hand in hand,” says Walter Scheurle, Board Member for Personnel of Deutsche Post DHL. “We view the diversity that has arisen over the years as a true competitive edge. After all, we as a multicultural company have an opportunity to learn from one another every day.” Deutsche Post DHL The Mail & Logistics Group Delivery address Charles-de-Gaulle-Str. 20 53113 Bonn GERMANY Phone +49 (0)228 182-99 44 Fax +49 (0)228 182-98 80 E-mail pressestelle@deutschepost.de www.dhl.com The commitment of Deutsche Post DHL to human resources is reflected in its Group Strategy 2015, the guiding principle of “Respect and Results,” and the effort to become the employer of choice in the mail and logistics industry and its “People Strategy.” Here, diversity management has been given a clear role: Against the backdrop of demographic change and the transformation of the job market, the company plans to consciously promote diversity in its workforce and the formation of multicultural and heterogeneous teams. Deutsche Post DHL is also determined to fill as many job vacancies as possible with applicants who have diverse backgrounds. The company uses a number of measures and initiatives to put its diversity management into practice. These steps range from a partnership with Teach First Germany and “UPstairs,” a scholarship program for employees’ children, to a concept called MIDEAL (a German acronym that stands for living with each other at work) that the company uses to actively oppose discrimination and violence. To promote diversity in the Group, Deutsche Post DHL also supports the RainbowNet, an internal network for lesbian, homosexual, bisexual and transsexual employees. “The intensive discussions among many colleagues with various experiences, languages, religions and cultural and ethnic backgrounds really enrich our company. But it can work only on the basis of tolerance and mutual respect,” Scheurle says. As a labor-intensive company, Deutsche Post DHL needs to retain experienced, loyal experts and executives and recruit talented people. With its Sustainability Report, its information on the Internet and its award-winning online career portal, the Group gives the general public a number of opportunities to learn about its human-resources policies and its commitment to corporate social responsibility. This high level of transparency has now been recognized with the Human Capital Club Award. The best DAX company was determined on the basis of the Human Capital Transparency Monitor (HCTM) of the Human Capital Club e.V. in cooperation with Professor Dr. Ingo Weller of the Institute of Human Capital Management at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. Deutsche Post DHL scored particularly high regarding information about training positions, the age structure of the company’s workforce, women in the company, the employee survey, talent management, recruitment, the Global Compact and the Global Reporting Initiative. “Transparency in human-resources policies polishes a company’s image and creates trust – among employees, customers and potential applicants,” Scheurle says. “As a result, diversity and transparency are the prerequisite for successful human-resources policies and contribute significantly to the company’s long-range development.” 2 Deutsche Post DHL also set standards regarding its employees’ health: For the second consecutive year, the company has received the Corporate Health Award 2011 in the category of transport/logistics. The award was presented at the beginning of November by the German business newspaper Handelsblatt, TÜV SÜD Life Services and EuPD Research. The award-winning health-management system at Deutsche Post DHL was recognized this year for its model integration of health management into all company processes and company policies. - End - Media inquiries: Deutsche Post DHL Corporate Communications Nina Mohammadi Tel.: +49 (0)228 182-9944 E-mail: pressestelle@deutschepost.de Deutsche Post DHL is the world’s leading postal and logistics services group.
