Global Journal Project Building Business Skills. Connecting Communities. Sharing Stories. Descriptions of Internships with Global Journal Project Mission of GJP Global Journal Project (GJP) empowers high school students through business skills to connect communities by sharing stories. We provide students and their faculty advisers with the necessary tools, resources, and mentorship for operating a student-run magazine business. The GJP model joins three diverse high schools (public, private and international) that form a chapter and collaborate to produce a high-quality, crosscultural print and online magazine as “a shared voice.” The profits earned by the chapters are reinvested in service through community-based educational events and member-selected philanthropic projects. GJP is a startup that incorporated in June 2012, but with a tested model that had existed for a year before we made modifications for expansion. As a business intern, you will participate in building this organization as we expand throughout Southern California. We currently offer two types of internship: the GJP Office Internship and the GJP Chapter Coordinator Internship. Please see below for fuller descriptions and a list of skills and attitudes that we are searching for in interns. GJP Office Internship Our office is located at 2270 Camino Vida Roble, Suite K, Carlsbad, CA. We are open every weekday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., but we do work as well on high-school campuses throughout the San Diego area, when the schools request such visits. Interns may work on projects from their college campuses or residence, with scheduled strategic meetings with the Executive Director in their local area. No daily commute to the Carlsbad office is required. The GJP Office Internship is corporate in nature, and most of your interaction will be with the Executive Director, vendors, and faculty advisers for Chapters. If you select this internship, you will work primarily in our office and may perform any of the following tasks: • • • • • • Business planner: you will participate in building this organization as we expand; your work will be strategic and/or logistical in nature. Promoter and marketer: you will contribute to the development of materials in various media, including social networks, video, and print. Program developer: you will help build templates, tools, and guides for new Chapters, aimed at a high-school audience. Fundraiser: you help employ grassroots, community-based fundraising techniques to inform the community of GJP and gather support. Accountant: you will perform accounting tasks for both GJP and the Chapters. Event planner: we have periodic events for GJP and the various Chapters, and you will work with GJP staff and other volunteers to make these successful. Global Journal Project 2270 Camino Vida Roble, Ste. K, Carlsbad, CA 92011 www.thegjp.org GJP Chapter Coordinator Internship Although we are located in one office, most of our work happens on high school campuses throughout San Diego and in other areas of the country. GJP staff members provide material, logistical, and strategic support to the Chapters, using all methods of communication, on and offsite. You will meet regularly with the Executive Director on or near your campus or residence, and you will work onsite with high-school students and their faculty advisers. You may perform any of the following tasks: • • • • Consultant: with your more extensive knowledge of publication or business, you serve as a consultant to the Chapter staff members on communication, editing, marketing, accounting, business development, and/or event planning. Advocate and recruiter: you represent GJP during school visits and recruit students who are interested in starting a GJP Chapter at their school. You will help facilitate the process of bringing a GJP Chapter to that campus. Publication adviser: you provide guidance to the editing staff on soliciting, editing, designing the layout, and publishing both a print and an online magazine. Editor: although this can fall under the previous category, this role involves primarily copyediting (coaching and doing) and helping Chapters define their editorial identity through choices of content. Appropriate Skills and Attitudes for Both Internships The tasks are many and vary quite a bit, and most of them require the same skillset and attitudes, both of which we hope to cultivate in the high-school students with whom you might work. At GJP, we value most of all the cultivation of human relationships and the sharing of stories as the vehicle to strengthen them. As such, we look for the following in our staff, volunteers, and interns: • • • • • • • • Effective and clear communicator Ability to work with people of all ages, especially students in high school Organization and punctuality The belief that we can create meaningful and on-going relationships with other people across cultural and geographical boundaries A desire to make positive change in public and private secondary education A think-globally perspective balanced with an act-locally mindset Professionalism and willingness to have fun Desire to try new things and to test new ideas Compensation GJP Interns are financially compensated at an hourly rate of $10 per hour.
