Research/Work
Experience
Graduate Research, Department of Biology, University of
Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22908 (Jan 2001 – Present)
Advisor: Dr. Emilie Rissman
• I am currently examining the involvement of both endogenous estrogen and
dietary phytoestrogens in sexual differentiation of the brain using an aromatase
knockout mouse model. In addition, I am investigating the interactions between
the classic estrogen receptors, α and β, in regards to their involvement in female
sexual behavior.
Graduate Research, Department of Neuroscience, University of
Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22908 (Aug 2000-Dec 2000)
Advisor: Dr. Jeremy Tuttle
• I investigated the neuroprotective effects of Nerve Growth Factor (NGF)
in an Alzheimer’s human cell culture model exposed to amyloid protein using a
two-site enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
Graduate Research Assistant, Department of Zoology, Miami
University, Oxford, OH 45056 (Aug 1998 – Aug 2000)
Advisor: Dr. Lori G. Isaacson
• During my Master’s program, I investigated neuronal plasticity elicited by
exogenous nerve growth factor within extracerebral blood vessels, superior
cervical ganglia, trigeminal ganglia, spinal cord, and brain in an in vivo rat
model.
• Coordination and instruction of undergraduate research within the laboratory
Graduate Teaching Assistant, Animal Physiology (Zoo 305)
Department of Zoology, Miami University, Oxford, OH 45056
(Aug 1998-Dec 1998; Aug 1999-Dec 1999) Supervisors: Dr.
Robert Sherman and Dr. Dennis Claussen
Undergraduate Research Assistant, Howard Hughes Summer
Intern, Department of Zoology, Miami University, Oxford, OH
45056 (May 1997-Aug 1997) Advisor: Dr. Ronald L. Wiley
• Analysis of the effects of central command and intramuscular pressure on
blood pressure during isometric exercise
Cadaver Dissection Assistant, Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, MI
49242 (Jan 1995-May 1998)
• One of two undergraduate students performing all dissection preparations for
the Biology 307 and 308 Anatomy courses
• Helped direct laboratory procedures and oversaw gross anatomy review
sessions
Hillsdale College Physiology Laboratory Student Worker,
Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, MI (Jan 1995 – May 1998)
• Designed and implemented exercise rehabilitation programs and monitored
equipment usage and maintenance
