English as a Second Language (ESL) Students
A student using the ESL program as a gateway to a degree program must obtain conditional acceptance
through the Office of Admissions. Students who wish to apply for the ESL program without applying for a
degree program may do so by contacting the International Student Office. Students are placed into courses
based on their ESL ACCUPlacer placement test score.
35
Calculation of Credit
For purposes of calculating units of credit, one quarter credit is equivalent to ten hours of lecture
instruction, twenty hours of laboratory instruction, or thirty hours of externship experience, in most cases.
The conversion for nursing clinicals is forty to one; the conversion for medical assisting is thirty-six to
one. Many courses at Stratford University are designed to be a combination of lecture and laboratory
instruction. Students should expect to spend a minimum of two hours studying or completing assignments
outside of class for every hour spent in class or under direct faculty instruction.
52
Admissions Process
Incoming students take the ESL ACCUPlacerOxford Online Placement Test test on a computer in the
learning resource center. The ACCUPlacer is proctored and It tests students’ abilities in listening, reading,
sentence meaning, and language use to measure all language skills.
