“A community needs a soul if it is to
become a true home for human beings.
You, the people must give it this soul.”
—Pope John Paul II
Looking back on the events that have marked our community
in the 2012-2013 school year, it is clear to me that the words
of the late Pope John Paul II have never been truer! Every
community depends upon its members to give it the soul to
make it a true home for each other. St. Francis High School
has been a true home because so many people give it the
soul that enables us to feel at home amongst each other.
We experience this, not only when we are celebrating our
accomplishments, but most importantly, when we have been
instruments of peace to each other when injury, doubt,
despair, darkness and sadness have broken into the homes of our students, parents,
faculty, staff , alumni and benefactors.
With the opening of the new Kuhn Memorial Stadium, we will be bringing back
home many programs that have not been able to practice or compete on campus.
Our Track & Field, Football, Cheer, Dance, Lacrosse, Marching Band, and Soccer
programs will all enjoy a beautiful new facility to display their talents and skills.
We invite all Alumni that have not been back to campus in many years to
come back home this fall to reminisce with longtime friends and to be inspired by
the growth of your alma mater. We will have an Alumni Hospitality Tent at each
of our home football games.
This is an exciting time as we celebrate a partnership for Catholic Education
that engages the entire St. Francis High School Family---Benefactors, Faculty &
Staff, Parents and Students and Alumni. We celebrate a vision where co-curricular
activities are events that bring a community together as a family. Parents,
grandparents, neighbors and friends join together in the spirit of youth and the
friendly atmospheres cheering on the efforts of student artists, athletes, musicians,
thespians, coaches, directors and producers.
We look forward to seeing you at the Stadium Dedication on August 30! In the
meantime, enjoy your summer!

The Kuhn Memorial Stadium begins its legacy
The ground was blessed for St. Francis High School’s
new Kuhn Memorial Stadium on May 14, 2013 during
a groundbreaking ceremony. Special remarks were
delivered by Ron ’65 and Theresa ’67 Kuhn, and alumni
parents Pat Rosmonowski and Phil Kerr. The blessing
of the ground, architects, and contractors was delivered
by Fr. John Belmonte, SJ, PhD, Superintendent of
Catholic Schools. A gathering of about 200 supporters,
students and school board members attended and
comingled afterwards for photos and a reception
graciously provided by the SFHS Parents’ Organization.
Groundbreaking Dedication
With love to their grandparents, the Abernathy family
dedicated the new running track to Scott Nelson.
A dedicated coach, mentor and teacher who has done
so much... with so little...for so long.
In his 25 years of coaching Spartan Cross Country
and Track & Field, Scott has motivated his athletes
to many accomplishments. Even without a real track,
during that time he has coached 11 State Champions
with four State records and numerous All-State athletes.
His teams earned 55 Conference titles, 18 Regional titles,
13 Sectional titles with 45 teams earning a spot in the
State finals. He has been named “Coach of the Year” by
the Daily Herald, Press Publications, Illinois Track and
Cross Country Coaches Association, and Illinois Girls’
Coaches Association. In 2011, he was a national finalist
for the Brooks Inspiring Coach of the Year award. The
2000 and 2001 Girls’ Cross Country teams finished 2nd
at State, the 2004 Boys’ Cross Country team finished
3rd at State, and the 2013 Boys and Girls Cross Country
teams finish 23rd and 14th respectively at State.

“It’s clear... Coach Nelson is not only a coach
and mentor to many, but a father to many as well.”
Coach Nelson has always set very high standards and
believes that hard work, dedication, and perseverance
lead to success. As a former athlete fondly says “he
isn’t just a coach, but also a mentor and teacher to his
athletes.” Coach Nelson has turned around many lives
by mentoring teens through tough family situations,
tutored his students to help with grades, and even let
an athlete live with him.

Thirty years ago Jamie was Valedictorian; in 2013
Megan followed in his footsteps. We asked Jamie
and Megan to reflect on their time and St. Francis.
“Megan and her father have a relaxed,
thoughtful demeanor punctuated by a warm smile.
They both love learning; in fact, Megan may
be the best student I’ve ever taught. Although
James is a diehard conservative, I think there
is still hope for Megan! And Mrs. Parisi has
done a stellar job planning and administering
our special faculty lunches!”
—Mark L Kolodziej, English Department Chair
“The biggest surprise was, as a
parent, one does not just send
your children ‘off to school’. They
become part of something much
greater; it is a community, a family.
Volunteering at SFHS is a way
to help build a connection and
enhance the experience of both
the parents and students. We
choose to support SFHS in order
to insure the legacy and make it
available for others to experience.
Parents don’t need a child
participating in an activity to
attend and feel comfortable
attending the activity.”

Looking back...Mr. Kolodziej had the most lasting
impact and greatest influence on me while at SFHS.
While his perm and penchant for cats, fishing and
brandy were all a little disturbing, I learned a lot
from him in both English and Political Science.
What I learned from him served me well in college
and serves me well even today in my career. I have
to read many reports/memos in my job, and I often
think that the author could benefit from taking
Mr. Kolodziej’s English class!
I can remember sitting in Mr. Jones’ classroom
the first day of school waiting for Biology class to
begin and thinking “Oh my gosh, I have 4 more
years of high school ahead of me.” I had no idea
in that moment how much fun and how many
lasting relationships I would have as a result of my
experience there.
“I’d like everyone to know about the lasting sense of
community and fellowship that St. Francis engenders. It’s
not just a great school academically, but it also helps shape
the whole person–socially, spiritually and academically. I look
back on my years there as a very special time in my life.”
If someone out there is thinking about donating or
volunteering at St. Francis...do it! The school has
come so far since I attended— the Kuhn Cultural
Arts Center, Spyglass, the science wing, and soon a
new athletic facility. All of these things are possible
because of the generous contributions from alumni
and other benefactors. As an alum, contributing
to the school is like paying it forward for the role
St. Francis played in your development; in some
ways, SFHS helped shape the person you are
today—why not continue to make that possible for
future alumni as well?
Megan Parisi ’13
“I wish other people knew how close and supportive
the SFHS community is and realized what a great place
St. Francis is to send your kids!”
My parents had the greatest influence on me
during my time at St. Francis. They were always
encouraging me to lead a balanced life and wanted
me to take my studies seriously but not miss out
on the classic high school experiences.
My best day at SFHS was the first day of senior
year. We were all so excited to finally be the
oldest at the school. We had a tailgate to start the
day, and everyone was legitimately happy to be
at school that day. When I first began school at
St. Francis, I was struck by how welcoming the
entire community was. It truly felt like everyone
enjoyed being there, and I was excited to spend
the next four years with my classmates. I was most
surprised by how much I truly enjoyed the Francis
experience. The family feel here was a welcome
surprise.

Nicole graduated at the top of the class of 2003.
Ten years later we asked her to catch us up on
ALL her adventures!
After graduating St. Francis, I first attended art
school at the Savannah College of Art and Design
for a quarter and was on their volleyball team. I soon
realized that SCAD was just not a good fit for me.
So, I started college again as a freshman at the
University of Notre Dame, where I double-majored
in Film & Television and Japanese. While I was a
student at Notre Dame, I studied abroad twice,
spending one semester at Nanzan University
in Nagoya, Japan and one semester in London,
studying in the Notre Dame London Program.
During my semester in London, I was blessed with
the opportunity to also visit Italy, France, Germany,
and the Czech Republic. I spent the next summer
studying at the Middlebury College Japanese
Language school.
After returning from Japan, I spent a year applying
to graduate schools while I worked as a technician
at a physical therapy clinic in Wheaton. In the fall
of 2011, I began a master’s program in Japanese
Language and Civilization at the University of
Colorado at Boulder. I worked as a graduate teaching
assistant for the Intermediate Japanese class. I am
currently continuing my master’s program as an
exchange graduate student at Sophia University in
Tokyo. My plans after graduation are not decided
yet, but I hope to acquire a job that utilizes my
Japanese skills.
Ten years can go so
quickly. Can you believe
its reunion time all ready!

After graduating summa cum laude from Notre
Dame and being inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa
Society, I moved to Japan to spend two years
teaching English in a rural mountain town as part of
the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program.
The JET Program is now in its 26th year and one of
the world’s largest exchange programs.
Things weren’t always perfect or convenient during
my time in the Japanese countryside (monkeys and
Japanese giant hornets), but I was able to create
numerous unforgettable memories including
climbing Mount Fuji!
I was also able to visit South Korea and China and
see the Great Wall of China while I still lived so close.
In July of 2010 I was ready to move onward to another
chapter of my life and I still remember crying as I
gave my farewell speech to my students and fellow
teachers. Everyone in the Japanese countryside had
been so incredibly kind to me!
I would say that in the past 10 years, being able
to travel and live overseas multiple times (in places
like Japan, England, France, Italy, Germany, the
Czech Republic, China, and South Korea) has
really changed me for the better as a person. My
way of thinking has broadened substantially and I
continually strive to learn about other cultures and
increase my open-mindedness in all aspects of life.
I am so happy to have friends from all across the
globe now and I hope to be able to see them and the
rest of the world, while also remaining close with
my family and friends at home, as I continue forward
in my life.

By Amanda Schmidt
St. Francis Mentor Program is a program
that brings together St. Francis students
and the kids at Marian Park in Wheaton.
We plan activities for the kids to be
able to interact and have a good time.
It allows the children to form relationships with the high school students
and the students to act as role models
to all of the kids. The Mentor Program
was a project that I created as part of
the Peacebuilders Initiative. Peacebuilders
is a program that brings together fifty
juniors and seniors from the Chicagoland
area. We spent one week in the summer
at the Catholic Theology Union in
Chicago. While at CTU we took Theology
classes in the morning and in the
afternoon we were assigned service
sites. My service site was Marillac Social
Center, a summer program/school for
underprivileged children in Chicago.
I spent the week in the first grade
classroom as a teacher’s aid.

St. Francis alumnus and Drexel University student, Marc Barrowclift ’11
participated in an amazing technology project this past April. Marc along
with three other students and their instructor unveiled their creation...
the biggest video game ever. During the annual Tech Week, Marc and
the team used the north side of the 29 story Cira Building in downtown
Philadelphia, PA as the screen to play the classic Atari games Pong! as
well as Tetris and Snake.
The controllers were set up on a terrace half a mile away! An old-school
joystick panel was connected to a laptop computer, which was connected
to a wifi hotspot and linked wirelessly to the computers that controled
the building’s lights. Speakers were set up to play the ‘bloop’ of each
successful bounce and the sound of each miss. This project utilized many
aspects of the latest electronic technology while entertaining the entire
city with a night of ‘old school’ gaming!

The Student Ambassador Lead Team (SALT) leads all student ambassadors
of the program. Mary Prebys ’13 and Stephanie Passialis ’13 directed the team
this past year. Within this group, individual leaders guide their own student
ambassador teams. These leaders included seniors Hanna Malak, Samantha
Miller, Alyssa Fernandez, Tia Talley, Meghan Wagner, Lauren Shields, Sarah
Huddleston, junior Michael Andelbrandt, and sophomore Alison Murphy.
The Student Ambassador Program manages recruiting events and any SFHS
events involving 6th to 8th grade students, such as school visits, Open Houses,
and Entrance Exams. Student ambassadors also work SFHS parent-coffee
events, the annual Spartan initiation for incoming freshmen students, and
the Freshman Registration Mass.
Each grade level of ambassadors has its own set of skills and responsibilities.
Senior ambassadors are proficient in public speaking, customer service, sales,
and event planning and management, skills which are important for future life
opportunities. For example, each senior ambassador has the opportunity to speak
publicly to unfamiliar people, including adults, in a comfortable, familiar setting.
“Our seniors gain real life work experience that looks great on college resumes,”
says Mr. Tuskey, Director of Recruiting. In addition, the senior ambassadors
help direct most events, visit nearby grade schools, and act as role-models to
underclass ambassadors and students.
Along with participating in recruiting activities, junior ambassadors assist senior
ambassadors at certain recruiting events and school visits. Sophomore ambassadors
also assist juniors and seniors as needed; however, their main role in the program
is supporting the SFHS Shadow Program. This program invites 7th and 8th grade
students to experience the life of a Spartan first-hand by ‘shadowing’ a freshman
for a day at St. Francis. These freshmen are not officially ambassadors, but they
play a vital role in the program and by shadow hosting potential Spartans they
take the first step to joining the program their sophomore year.
30 Years of Service
Congratulations to (L to R) Larry Baker,
Sue A. Kolasinski, Tia Holinger, and
Joan O. Kustak, on their 30 years of
teaching and inspiring the students
of St. Francis! When asked to reflect on
their milestone they had these quotes:
“St. Francis has been my home and family
for thirty years and I am blest to be here.
I probably have the best job ever!”
—Joan O. Kustak, Math Dept.
“My 30 years at St. Francis have been
wonderful and life-changing. I feel truly
blessed to be part of this great community!”
–Sue A. Kolasinski, Math Dept. Chair
“What can I say but ‘Time flies when you
are having fun!’”
–Tia Holinger, Fine Art Dept. Chair
“100% EFFORT + DESIRE = SUCCESS!
Thank you SFHS Family for 30 great years!”
–Larry Baker, Business Office Associate
As this school year comes to a close, the Student Ambassador Program events
slow down, senior ambassadors take roles as mentors for juniors and sophomores,
freshmen students interested in the program begin to apply, and the group starts
planning goals for these next few months. In August, the ambassadors will
cordially welcome the new St. Francis freshmen class to the school. “We hope to
have a smooth registration process this year,” says Mr. Tuskey. Then the program
will get ready to host approximately one-hundred 7th grade ‘shadows’ interested
in becoming Spartans the following year.

butt,” Spartans coach Jim Winslow

They took it in and gave it back
and controlled what they needed to
control.”They ended the season 17-1.

Spring Production : Urinetown
This year’s Spring production was Urinetown, a satirical look at a ficticious city
suffering from a water shortage. The musical pokes fun at Broadway, capitalism,
and small-town politics as it follows star-crossed lovers Bobby and Hope and their
revolution against a powerful corporation and its oppression against the “have-nots.”

On March 9 the St. Francis family gathered for this year’s Ensuring Our Future
auction, entitled Under the Tuscan Sun. This is the school’s one and only fundraiser
to enrich the lives of St. Francis students as well as guarantee them a sustainable and
successful future. A few of the great experiences offered in the live auction and raffles
included Spring Break in Naples, A Semester of Free Tuition, and A Week Under the
Tuscan Sun. In addition to our exciting LIVE auction items there were ‘staycations’
(donated by St. Francis families), themed parties, co-curricular summer camps,
dining and entertainment certificates, and much more. All items were made possible
by the generous donations of the St. Francis Community. Plan on joining us for
next years’ event on March 8, 2014.
Pack the Place
With a thrilling double overtime, this year’s
Pack the Place was a huge success raising over
$4,000 for the Annual Auction. Starting
with our Family Mass and followed by a chili
and hot dog dinner courtesy of Sodexo, the
students and families were entertained by a
night of exciting Spartan basketball, raffles,
and a couple of missed free throw attempts
by President Bednar and Principal Huhn!

On April 13, 2013, the St. Francis community came together for an event
to help our fellow Spartan, Alex Novak. At the beginning of the school year,
a tragic accident left Alex wheelchair bound with severe head trauma, and the
family was in need of several things to help Alex and his quality of life, so the
St. Francis family answered the call. In conjunction with the Annual Jazz and
Swing Night, a pasta dinner was held in the cafeteria with a bake sale running
all night in the Slant Dome while the extremely talented jazz band strutted
their stuff. It was above and beyond anyone’s expectations, and it was a night
that will be remembered for years to come. Thanks to everyone’s efforts, over
$30,000 was given to the Novak Family for Alex’s benefit. It was truly a blessed
event and such a reflection of what our community can do.

Kate Code ’84 Kyer has been flying since 1982, has been an aviation professional
for 26 years and is currently a Captain of B757/767s for the United Parcel Service.
She and her husband live and breathe aviation. They both fly for a living, own their
own planes, and have their own airport located about 100 miles NE of Dallas.
Kate flies airshows on her days off during the summer and has been competing in
aerobatics for 15 years.
Shannon Zierk ’11 (below, front row
center) is an Elementary Ed. student at
Illinois State University. Shannon spent
her spring break in Selma and Mobile, AL
with 15 other college students from three
Illinois state schools teaching and working
with children as part of their education major.
Kate has been a pilot with UPS since 1991, having spent 18 years flying the DC-8,
and then the 757/767 since they retired the “8”. She flies all over Europe and Asia to
some really cool destinations. She wants other girls to know it’s possible to achieve the
same goals she dreamed about when women weren’t encouraged to do so in this field.
Her father told her she couldn’t fly for a living because she was a girl who “wore
glasses” (and this was in the 1980s!). While the climate is MUCH improved, there is
still work to be done.

James Louis ’74, Theresa ’75 Malkowski,

and Joseph ’84.
She and her husband have recently become more involved in encouraging young
people to learn to fly, via airshows and the EAA Young Eagles program. They
launched the first ever air show in Bonham, TX last November, and incorporated a
Young Eagles rally. Volunteers flew 81 kids on their very first flights that day! Last
year, Kate mentored to the young ladies in the Women Soar, You Soar program up at
the EAA convention in Oshkosh, WI.

MVP. Behnke, the
first-team all-Great

leadoff hitter, led
the Vikings in ten
offensive categories. In eight postseason
games she hit .556 with a slugging
percentage of .925. Her 66 hits set a
program record.
On Saturday May 11, the St. Francis community dedicated a beautiful
tree in honor of Megan Boken ‘07. The clouds parted and the sun
shown through as Fr. Jim Antiporek, St. Francis school board member
and pastor at St. Irene’s gave the blessing.
Many of Megan’s ‘06 State Championship volleyball teammates
were present for the occasion. They were joined by other members
of the volleyball community and the Boken family. There were many
touching tributes to Megan as teammates, coaches, and family
members were given an opportunity to water the tree and give
comments about Megan. The ‘06 team and families donated a
beautiful sitting rock with a plaque. Fr. Jim ended with the thought
that “this tree’s leaves and branches will give rest to St. Francis
students for many years.”
Thank you to Bruss Nursery for donating Megan’s tree.
