Chemistry Unit 1

Unit #1: Bonding

Describe how the distribution of electrons within an atom determines its interactions with other atoms; describe the attractive forces between molecules and their effect on chemical and physical properties. (C3.1, C3.2, C3.3)

C.3.1 Describe, compare, and contrast the characteristics of the interactions between atoms in ionic and covalent compounds.

SWBAT: Create electron dot diagrams based on the position of elements in the periodic table; model how electron transfer forms ionic bonds between metal and non-metal atoms; model how electrons are shared to form covalent bonds; compare and contrast metallic bonds to ionic and covalent bonds; draw particle diagrams of each type of bond.

C.3.2 Compare and contrast how ionic and covalent compounds form.

SWBAT: Explain how cations and anions form; identify the electrical charge of an ionic compound; model the octet rule in formation of covalent bonds; identify the different types of bonds that can be formed in covalent bonds (single, double, triple, etc.) based on the octet rule.

C.3.3 Compare and contrast ionic, covalent network, metallic and polar and non-polar molecular crystals with respect to constituent particles, strength of bonds, melting and boiling points, and conductivity; provide examples of each type.

SWBAT: Describe the representative units that define molecular compounds and ionic compounds; describe three properties of ionic and covalent compounds; explain how the strength of a covalent bond is related to its bond dissociation strength.
