Relax & Rejuvenate in Nature, One Vermont Campsite at a Time
O
ften, the most memorable camping trips are the ones comprised
of the simplest of pleasures: a lake
or bubbling brook, leaves rustling
overhead, and access to quiet, beckoning forests. This summer, discover these outdoor “amenities” in
abundance at Vermont’s 39 State
Parks and 66 private campgrounds.
There’s no rush, no crowds, no
worries, and plenty to do - or not
do - for an awe-inspiring getaway.

or busy families looking to slow down or
friends and couples seeking active adventures, setting the pace to relax and play comes
easily. Evening mealtimes often serve up happy
reminisces of the day’s activities and joyful
deliberation on what to do tomorrow and the
next day, and so on. Traditional camp cookouts
of hot dogs and s’mores can also feature local
flavors like artisan cheese and craft beer by the
campfire. Time in nature, slowed down and
savored, produces vivid snapshots to revisit for
a lifetime.
While some of Vermont’s most beloved attributes like mountain views and clean air infused
with the smell of fresh cut grass are enjoyed by
most, Vermont State Parks rangers and campground owners appreciate that campers are not
one size fits all. They offer rugged camping experiences for the back-country traveler as well
as accommodations for those who prefer more
creature comforts. In the Green Mountain
State, it’s as you wish: choose back-to-basics
primitive sites on the campground’s remote
edges; get comfy on easily accessible tent sites
with electric and water hookups, or nestle into
resort-style amenities of RV parks with spacious
cabins, onsite markets and commons equipped
with WIFI. So pack up your tent and hiking
boots or load up the camper and don’t forget
your sunscreen. It’s time to recharge, reconnect with one another, and become reacquainted with Mother Nature and her restorative ways.
Unwind and relax at your own pace. Landlovers will find campgrounds with
plenty

More adventurous campers
will be thrilled
by the state’s
array of recreation, guides
and outfitters:
rock climbing,
tree-top obstacle courses,
off-road Segway tours,
road cycling,
fly fishing,
wind-surfing,
gold-panning, and the list goes on. Vermont
is equally rich in cultural offerings; day-trips
along Vermont’s 10 Scenic Byways reveal significant historic sites, a breadth of artisans and
galleries, and museums with thought-provoking exhibits.
Rest assured campers, you’ll get a good night’s
rest after playing to your heart’s content. But
don’t zip up that sleeping bag and tent before
looking up to marvel at the endless stars.

The Vermont Campground Association
brings you this guide as your resource
to help plan your camping trip to Vermont. We hope that you take home
cherished memories and return many
times to our beautiful state.
PRIVATE CAMPGROUNDS provide a diverse
range of camping facilities and settings.
They are listed on the map on pages
18-19 and color coded by region (i.e. bl).
Vermont’s STATE PARK CAMPGROUNDS AND
DAY USE AREAS pride themselves in preserving the beauty and character of
each park by offering “camping in as
natural a setting as possible.” They do
not have RV hook-ups at their campsites. However, dumping stations are
available and RV’s are welcome. They
are listed on the map on pages 18-19
and color coded by region (i.e. dq).
RATES AND POLICIES: Please refer to each campground’s individual listing. Rates are subject to
change. Tax is charged as applicable. Rates, refunds and operational policies are determined by
individual campgrounds. Please check details at
the time of registration. Contact the individual
campground to get answers for any questions
that you may have regarding that particular campground.
VISITOR FEES: Most of our campgrounds charge
for visitors, especially on holiday weekends, when
their facilities are already maximized. They understand that you may want to invite friends and family to share your experiences of camping in Vermont. Our park owners realize that these visitors
may be our next camping guests. Owners strive
to provide the best camping experience for their
guests and visitors at a reasonable cost. In order
to do so, campgrounds may charge your visitors
a fee to use the pools, restrooms, and other facilities. VCA appreciates your understanding, and
suggests that you contact the individual campground for their visitor fees.
Being listed, or having an advertisement in the
Vermont Campground Guide does not imply
or suggest that the Vermont Campground
Association Inc. or its officers, endorse or
sanction the companies or individuals being
listed or advertised. VCA does not inspect
member campgrounds. The VCA was established
for marketing purposes; it has no regulatory
authority over its members, advertisers, or the
rates, policies, or practices under which they may
operate.

hether you are a seasoned camper or first
timer, there are countless recreational
opportunities for biking, hiking, canoeing and
kayaking, hunting and fishing, or just horseback
riding quietly along a wooded trail to accompany
your outdoor experience.
Biking
can be as simple and quiet as taking the
family along one of Vermont’s many back roads or
on one of our great multi-use trails such as the Cross
Vermont Trail or the Lake Champlain Bikeway.
There are also many mountain biking trails for riders
of every level. Kingdom Trails in the Northeast
Kingdom are well known for their variety of trails,
from those especially for families to mountain bike
trails for experts. Ascutney Trails in central Vermont
has 30 miles of mapped trails. Grafton Ponds in
southern Vermont offers 2,000 acres of biking trails
and scenery to enjoy.
Canoeing and kayaking
offers families an
opportunity to enjoy Vermont’s many lakes and
rivers, from the expansive Lake Champlain to the
Connecticut River running the length of our eastern
border with NH. The Northern Forest Canoe Trail
meanders through northern Vermont offering a
variety of boating options. Experience the quiet
fun and freedom of Stand Up Paddling (SUP)
on Vermont’s lakes and ponds, or enjoy an active
vacation in Vermont on the Class III and IV rapids
of the West River in southern Vermont, one of the
state’s hidden treasures.
Hiking
is allowed on many of the biking trails
listed above, but for the true hiker, one looks to
the Appalachian and Long Trail which traverses the
length of the state from Pownal to Jay. Vermont’s
State Parks offer a variety of nature trails along
our many shorelines to challenging trails to the
top of Mount Ascutney or Vermont’s tallest peak,
Mount Mansfield. The State Parks also offer the
Vermont Outdoor Adventure Challenge, a program
for families to earn points to receive free passes to
the State Parks.

ithin this working landscape, visitors find towns
and villages that are home to a bounty of
Vermont products, from award winning cheddar
and ice cream to handcrafted wood furniture, to
historic quarried marble and granite that adorn
sculpture gardens and enriched town’s architectural
edifices.
Farms and fields align with small towns as the
Connecticut River lazily meanders along the eastern
border of the state providing access points for fishing
and boating. Quechee Gorge, known as “Vermont’s
Little Grand Canyon,” imparts a dramatic visual on
visitors while the Scenic Route 100 Byway, fondly
also termed the Skiers’ Highway, meanders along
the mountain ranges connecting ski towns and small
villages. Here, the Long Trail, Vermont’s end-toend hiking path parallels Route 100 to the west
as the Appalachian Trail branches off and winds
easterly toward Maine.

scenic drives across mountain passes, or “gaps:”
Middlebury Gap, Appalachian Gap, Brandon Gap,
Middlebury Gap, Roxbury Gap and Lincoln Gap all
ascend the mountains of this region. Also, take the
path oft traveled by literary enthusiasts by visiting
the Robert Frost National Historic Landmark and
rustic wooden writing cabin where the famed
American poet found his inspiration.
Some of the many stops along the Vermont African
American Heritage Trail in this region include the
Justin Morrill Homestead, the home of Stephen
Douglas, Rokeby Museum, and Middlebury College.

With Lake Champlain to the west, the

Green Mountains in between, this area’s
recreational pleasures are boundless. Float
down the river to your campsite at Wilgus State Park or paddle Lake Champlain
or any number of smaller lakes. Hike the
Green Mountain National Forest, the Long

or check out mountain biking trails via

Throughout the summer and fall, visitors will find numerous craft, art
and antique shows, flea markets, agricultural fairs and field days – like
the Tunbridge World’s Fair or Vermont State Fair in Rutland, and
weekly theatre, farmers’ markets and band stand music on town greens.
A visit to Montpelier, the smallest state capital in the country, may
inspire a tour of the Vermont History Museum. Or stroll the historic
grounds of Plymouth Notch, virtually unchanged since the early 1900s.
This rural, largely preserved Vermont village includes the homes of
President Calvin Coolidge’s family and neighbors, a general store,
church and the 1924 Summer White House office. Even the cheese
factory still makes cheese using the original 1890 recipe.

isitors to the smallest region of the state will
find a celebrated way of life with boundless
activities interwoven amidst a richly diverse
landscape. Water flows and frames the region, from
the Connecticut River on the eastern border to the
Battenkill River on the western edge of the state
so swimming, boating, nature-watching and world
renowned fly-fishing are readily accessible activities.
The West River cuts a centerline through the
region, flowing southeast, and routinely challenges
white-water rafters with cherished heart-pounding
adventures, particularly in the late spring and early
summer.

In old Bennington, amid historic estates, nearby
churches and museums, the tallest structure in
Vermont rises into the skyline. A 306’ stone obelisk,
the Bennington Battle Monument commemorates
the 1777 battle in which General John Stark, aided
by the Green Mountain Boys, defeated the King
of England’s troops. A quick elevator ride to the
observation floor reveals multi-state views.
Driving tours of southern Vermont can lead to
several of Vermont’s scenic byways, including the
Molly Stark Byway, Scenic Route 100 Byway, Shires
of Vermont Byway, Stone Valley Byway and the
southern portion of the Connecticut River Byway.
Traveling up the center of the region offers colorful
“peak” views that visually stun, especially during
the fall foliage season, from mid-September to
mid-October. Here, Mount Snow, Stratton, Magic
and Bromley Mountain resorts encourage visitors
to explore on foot, via mountain bike, golf cart,
atop a chairlift or gondola, or even while whizzing
downhill via alpine slide or zip line. Another visual
exhilaration can be found on the blacktop; witness
the scenery of the surrounding Green Mountains,

for its songbird chorus in springtime.
You’ll find riverside trails and the gorgeous

What Can I Do
to Help Save
Vermont Trees?

On the water, memories aren’t made,
they’re caught.
Don’t risk starting a new infestation
of an invasive insect or disease.
If you bring firewood when camping,
you risk carrying tree-eating insects
inside the firewood. The insects
can crawl out, spread to trees at the
campground or State Park,
and destroy forests nearby.
You can still have a roaring campfire
if you just burn safe.
• Buy firewood near where you will
burn it. You can get wood at the
campground or from local vendors.
• If you transport firewood within
Vermont, a good rule of thumb is
only burn wood that was cut with in 50 miles.
• If visiting from out of state, find
out about firewood regulations at
www.vtinvasives.org.
Get out there and catch some memories.
