Our new students, birth through kindergarten, are in the classes of the EEU. Our bright graduate students are taking their places in the viewing booths and classrooms to answer the questions and deepen the research in early childhood education and developmental disabilities. It is an exciting time at the Haring Center! Your support makes it possible for inclusive education to continue its movement in bringing children of all abilities together, supporting all families and preparing future teachers to create inclusive communities within their classrooms. We had another extraordinary year thanks to your generosity. This year, the Haring Center’s annual auction raised the necessary $600,000 to keep the doors open to the Experimental Education Unit (EEU). Dr. Kathleen Meeker recently joined the EEU faculty in the UW College of Education and she is now working with the Haring Center — conducting research through the Applied Research Unit (ARU), training through the Professional Development Unit (PDU), and working in the classrooms at the EEU. She specializes in professional development systems for early childhood professionals, innovative web tools for evidence-based practices, and practical strategies for promoting social-emotional competence in young children with and without special needs. Join us for the Fall DUBS Talk (Develop Understand Build) at the Haring Center to hear more about Dr. Meeker’s work. In 2014, the Haring Center’s PDU entered into an exciting partnership with Washington State’s Department of Early Learning through the Early Achievers program. The purpose of Early Achievers is to improve the quality of childcare and early learning programs. Through this $1 million grant, PDU staff are implementing ongoing coaching and training to support early learning professionals, thereby providing the highest quality individualized teaching for children with special needs and challenging behaviors to ensure their successful inclusion. Already, this specialized training and support through the Early Achievers program is reaching over 58,000 children in Washington. In the coming year, we will launch our Campaign for Inclusion. I invite you to join us as we lead the movement for inclusion to create a world where all children learn, play and grow together. The Haring Center’s annual auction will be an opportunity to support the Haring Center today, while the Campaign for Inclusion is an opportunity to support the Haring Center forever. Please enjoy the articles in our inaugural annual stewardship report. I hope you learn something new about the research, training and service happening here every day. I hope you continue your support of inclusive education — in your classroom, your community or through supporting the Haring Center. Thank you! Sincerely, Ilene Schwartz 3 HARING CENTER ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Ilene Schwartz Director of the Haring Center 11 YEARS OF PARTNERSHIP 4 HARING CENTER ANNUAL REPORT 2015 From humble beginnings, the Haring Center’s partnership with Whole Foods Market has blossomed into a relationship that extends far beyond significant financial support. Back in 2004, an employee at the company’s Roosevelt Square location asked if Whole Foods Market might donate a gift basket to the annual auction supporting the Experimental Education Unit, which their child attended at the time. Grant Daisley, Whole Foods Market associate marketing coordinator, said the request sparked the store to look deeper. After meeting with EEU staff, the company decided to not only provide a gift basket, but donate much of the food for the gala. Within a couple years, it was donating all food and mixers, valued at approximately $25,000 annually. In addition to financial support, Daisley noted the children of several Whole Foods Market team members have attended the EEU. “They see the impact of the EEU first hand,” Daisley said. “It’s important for our team members to support that work and they are our best ambassadors to get the word out to customers.” At 11 years and counting, Whole Foods Market’s partnership with the Haring Center is its longest running community partnership in the Pacific Northwest. Whole Foods Market’s support grew even stronger in 2010 with the launch of its reusable bags featuring artwork created by EEU children. Each spring, students create artwork for the bags, which are sold at the company’s seven Seattle area stores. “The fun thing for us is we don’t just sell the bags, we celebrate them,” Daisley said. “Our team members look forward to them. They become a collectible item and we have customers buying them every year.” Over the past five years, bag sales have generated more than $84,000 to support the EEU’s Healthy Living program, which provides free, healthy meals to students. “The first step to a good learning environment is good, healthy food,” Daisley said. “And for us it’s always about the food — good, healthy, nutritious, sustainable food. So being able to give back to a school and promote development and learning is a perfect fit with our mission.” At 11 years and counting, Whole Foods Market’s partnership with the Haring Center is its longest running community partnership in the Pacific Northwest. “We have a tremendous appreciation for the many people who are touched by the Haring Center,” Daisley said. “We value standing up to support that work.” 5 HARING CENTER ANNUAL REPORT 2015 THE BEST REWARD 6 HARING CENTER ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Erin Greager fell in love at first sight. Standing in the classroom where she would soon work, seeing the children play with one another, she knew the Experimental Education Unit was the right place for her. “I hadn’t spent much time around kids with autism and it was fascinating to meet these young people who had so much potential,” Greager said. Her first assignment upon joining the EEU in 2003 as a classroom aide was to work one-on-one with a 4-year-old boy. “He had a really funny, quirky sense of humor,” she said. “If I was able to make him laugh about something, I could get him engaged in the materials and get him on track.” Today, Greager is one of the school’s head teachers, working with 14 children on the autism spectrum. “One of my favorite parts of this job is supporting families so they can see the successes their kids are having,” she said. Each milestone — going potty on their own, making friends, talking for the first time — is rewarded with smiles or tears of joy. “That’s the best reward,” Greager said. “Our families are working so hard. It’s incredibly motivating for me to get to know them, be a part of their journey and see how much our children can accomplish.” One of my favorite parts of this job is supporting families so they can see the successes their kids are having. 7 HARING CENTER ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Financial Summary — Fiscal Year 2015 66+34 1+86+94 EXPERIMENTAL EDUCATION UNIT FUNDING SUMMARY Experimental Education Unit................................$2,736,010 (66%) Gifts & Discretionary.............................................$1,394,534 (34%) TOTAL REVENUE............................................ $4,130,544 (100%) EXPERIMENTAL EDUCATION UNIT EXPENSES Salaries & Benefits .................................................. 3,386,765 (86%) Other Contractual Services.......................................... 348,813 (9%) Supplies & Materials..................................................... 180,600 (4%) Auxilary (Contracted Services, Travel, Equipment, Tuition) ..................................................... $36,865 (1%) Total Expenses................................................. 3,953,043 (100%) Our Impact $0 Cost to families for EEU educational services. 1360 Number of education professionals receiving intensive training every year through the Haring Center. 8 HARING CENTER ANNUAL REPORT 2015 6000 Families benefiting from a single graduate student trained at the Haring Center over the course of her/his career.
