How does APU do things?
Academic Advising

Required
Academic advising provides
you with the expertise of faculty about your major. It is
not simply picking out classes, it is planning your future,
suggesting when and where
you should study abroad,
intern possibilities and mentorship from an expert in your
field of study. The advisor is
a resource person available to
explore life, vocational, and
educational goals/growth, as
well as aid in academic planning and course selection. For
those students who haven’t
declared a major, the Office
of Academic Advising can
advise you about the General
Studies requirements and lead
you to resources on campus
specific to your needs.

When
Academic advising is scheduled in October and March of
each year to pre-register for
the following semester. You
must make an appointment
for advising in the office of
your major (or Office of Academic Advising if you don’t
have a major).
An Advisement Report is a
degree audit that provides
you with an online accounting of classes you have taken
thus far to meet particular
requirements & what requirements you still need to
fulfill. This way you may
always check your progress
with the requirements for
your major as well as for
General Studies. Follow the
steps below to access your
degree audit:
1. Go to home.apu.edu and
log in. 2. Select the “Student
Center” tab. 3. Click the
“My Academics” link. 4.
Click “View my Advisement
Report” next to Academic
Requirements.
 Simply click on the course
that interests you, and a
description of that course
will appear (with the prerequisites and co-requisite
requirements).

General Studies Requirements
APU’s General Studies Requirements include Skills and University
Requirements and six Integrative
Core Requirements, which include
elective unit requirements. Of the
courses taken to fulfill these requirements, at least 18 units must be
courses at the 300 or higher level. All
of these requirements must be met
by approved classes. Please note
that elective unit requirements may
be fulfilled by designated “elective” or
“core” classes.
All courses approved to satisfy general studies requirements are identified in the Class Schedule and are
included on the list of approved general studies courses. This list is
found in One Stop and in the
Academic Advising & Retention
office and on the APU website:
http://www.apu.edu/provost/generalst
udies/
Additional courses may be approved
in the future. Students are encouraged to integrate studies courses
throughout all their years at APU.
Even though students work closely
with a faculty advisor in determining
their general studies requirements,
the responsibility of fulfilling these
general studies requirements is solely that of the student. For further information, please see One Stop
and/or Academic Advising &
Retention office.
Some General Studies requirements
may be reduced based on the number of units you transfer in at the time
you apply to APU. For a clear understanding of the possible reduction of
requirements, see your Admissions
Counselor.
