Science 8: Dissecting a Sheep Eye Lab Instructions
You will be dissecting a sheep's eye next class in order to see the anatomy and understand how an eye
works. While the sheep eye is very similar to the human eye, there are some key differences.
You will be writing a full lab report for this assignment. Please see the "Grade 8 Lab Report Format"
for general instructions on how to write this. Please write all headings clearly and underline them. Part
of writing a good lab report is making sure it is neat and organized.
Use pg. 212 in your text book to help you get ready for the lab report.


You need to have the purpose, safety, materials, procedure sections complete before you can
start the lab.
o You must write out each step for the procedure. The textbook contains quite a bit of
extra information. Only write down the things you must DO.
You also need to have the observation section ready to fill in before the lab starts.
YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE DISSECTION IF THIS IS NOT DONE WHEN
YOU ARRIVE TO CLASS
The observation section will need to state/answer the following:
1)
2)
3)
4)
5)
A sketch and label of the eye as seen from the front before you start dissecting.
A sketch and label of the eye as seen from the side before you start dissecting.
What colour is the iris in the eye you are dissecting?
A description of the lens.
A description of the retina.
The following are a list of questions you will need to answer after the lab:
1) List 4 differences between the anatomy of a sheep eye and a human eye.
2) Draw and label a cross section diagram of an eye.
3) In paragraph form explain how an eye functions to let us see, in as much detail as you can.
Pretend you are explaining it to a friend or a sibling that has no idea how it works. You may
want to make reference to your diagram.
