Information on Math Course Changes at Virginia Tech Virginia Tech is in the process of switching to math courses. In the past, students would take: • MATH1205, Calculus (3 credits) • MATH1206, Calculus (3 credits) • MATH1224, Vector Geometry (2 credits) • MATH2224, Multivariable Calculus (3 credits) • MATH1114, Linear Algebra (2 credits) • MATH2214, Differential Equations (3 credits) The new math required for the Class of 2018 and later will be: • MATH1225, Calculus I (4 credits) • MATH1226, Calculus II (4 credits) • MATH2204, Multivariable Calculus (3 credits) • MATH2114, Linear Algebra (3 credits) -‐ all engineering departments will accept MATH2114, Linear Algebra, but several departments will allow MATH1114 (2 credits) as an alternate. Mechanical engineering will require the 3 credit version for all students graduating 2018 and later. • MATH2214, Differential Equations (3 credits) (unchanged) New transfer students will be awarded math credits in such a way that gives them the maximum credits during the transition period – if you don’t think that this is true for your math credits, please let us know immediately. Many of you will see that your credits have been awarded with the new course numbers. Please let us know if you have any questions or see any problems with your math credits. Students graduating prior to 2018 can satisfy their math requirements with the old or new sequences; after that, students will need to meet the new requirements, including the 3 credit linear algebra course (MATH2114). The Math department has provided the following equivalencies when switching from the old to the new course numbers: • 1205 and 1206 will substitute for 1225. • 1206 and 2224 will substitute for 1226. • 1224 and 2224 will substitute for 2204. It is important that if you intend to finish the original courses, you do so quickly, as the old courses will be phased out at Virginia Tech per the schedule below: Summer 2014 Fall 2014 Spring 2015 Summer 2015 Fall 2015 and thereafter 1205 offered 1206 offered offered 1224 offered offered 2224 offered offered offered offered 1225 offered offered offered offered 1226 offered offered offered offered 2114 offered offered offered offered 2204 offered offered offered offered We have attempted to recommend the correct math courses for you based on your projected graduation date. All students will need a linear algebra course, differential equations, plus one of the calculus series. When in doubt about your graduation date, we recommend MATH2114 (3 credits) if you have not yet taken linear algebra. We strongly recommend that you double check your math credits and contact the Math department if you have questions about whether or not you will meet the proper math requirements.
