The actual induction ceremony will be on Thursday, October 23, at 6:30 p.m., in the TLH Mall. We invite families to attend this prestigious ceremony for our academically successful students. Radio’s Birthday Mike Tollin (director), Radio, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Ed Harris at Radio premiere. James Robert “Radio” Kennedy turns 68 on Tuesday, October 14. What can we say? We love him! What a wonderful life story he has lived thus far! His party will be around 6:00 pm on Tuesday, October 14, at Chick-fil-A on Highway 81. P.S. He loves gifts (but no food, please)! Listening to Radio Life is full of ironies. One would think that most high schools have at least one famous student who has brought great recognition to the institution. Maybe it is a student who graduated from Harvard, maybe one who won the Pulitzer Prize for journalism, maybe a famous professional athlete. T. L. Hanna has had all of these, but none can come close to our most famous “student.” James “Radio” Kennedy, a 67-year-old, mentally challenged man, showed up on a football field behind the old McCants in the mid-1960’s and has been an integral part of the school ever since. At that time, he was a teenager, with a transistor radio seemingly attached to his ear, who could barely speak, had never attended school, and never learned to read or write. He was called “that guy with the radio” in the beginning because no one knew his name. Later, he was nicknamed “Radio” by the coaches and players. He became a fixture at football practices, standing passively and watching, until one day when he began to mimic the coaches’ signals and tried his hand at yelling out commands. In the beginning he could not speak. But some unimaginable event happened inside his brain when he watched football being coached and played. Whatever disability that existed in that brain of his began to regress and provided space for new neurological matter that understood football completely. Football ignited his spirit and created a new purpose for his life. As he arrived to that football field each day, he could have been labeled a distraction and sent away. But he was not. The coaches embraced him, and as coaches came and went, someone would always take over his care. Coach Jim Fraser and several others had the honors, but eventually Coach Harold Jones took over the job and has been his “daddy” ever since. Generations of Hanna students and faculty have had an opportunity to know Radio. Everyone has a story to tell, some of them priceless: his eating a cooler full of sandwiches that had been made for the team and stored safely on the bus; his pass-kick-and-throw half-time shows; his permanent status as a junior, with no threat of graduation; his perfect rendition of James Brown’s “I Feel Good;” his hysterical imitations of Coach Jim Fraser and Coach Wayne Jones; his astounding ability to name the mascot of any team in the state; and his response to the question, “Where do they normally keep this tractor, Radio?” When TLH was located on the current McCants campus, the fire marshal made a visit to the school one day. Someone had parked a small tractor in a shed attached to the newest gym there, an obvious violation of fire code. Someone rushed down to move the tractor. Radio was outside of the gym when the fire marshal came by. He looked at Radio and asked, “Radio, where do they normally keep that tractor?” Radio pointed to the shed. Needless to say, he was reprimanded for telling the fire marshal where the tractor was normally kept. To this day, if someone asks him about this tractor, he will say, “Ain’t nunna my bizniss.” The stories could fill the pages of a lengthy book, each showing the child-like innocence and loving heart that exists within him. It would be easy to talk about all the school and coaches have done for Radio, but the miraculous thing about this story is what Radio has done for the school. It is perhaps a lesson of which all of us need to be reminded. Because he was embraced by caring people, he was stimulated to learn. Because he was loved, he found his place in the world. Because people looked past his disabilities and imperfections, he found a way to make his own unique contribution to society. What a lesson there is to be learned here. How many lost souls could be saved with a little love and compassion? The thousands of students who have made their way through the halls of T. L. Hanna over the last fifty years have seen the results of the love and caring given to Radio. We have had the distinct privilege of providing them with a real-life model of what love and caring can do for the human spirit. Radio has a permanent smile on his face. He is never without his ability to shake hands and hug necks. He returns exponentially whatever love is given to him. And here the irony rests. He gives back much more than he has received. Today, after Sports Illustrated, Readers’ Digest, ESPN, CBS News, and Hollywood have all told his story, we marvel at this simple disabled man who still rides the bus to high school each day. It is miraculous how a disabled child in a grocery cart riding the hills behind the old McCants in Anderson, South Carolina, could have arrived to this point – having a movie made about him; being a guest at numerous professional athletic events, having hundreds of visitors each year wanting to meet him, being nationally recognized and, finally, being universally loved. It was destiny that he arrived on that football field some fifty years ago. He is without a Harvard degree or Pulitzer Prize or professional athletic contract, but his fame has surpassed all of these accolades. And the story is simple: love and compassion can change lives. It has changed his, and, in return, he has changed ours, and we are better people for having known him. Happy birthday, Radio. Boys’ Soccer Parent Meeting There will be a Parent meeting on Monday October 27th in the TL Hanna Lecture Hall at 6:30 pm for all boys interested in playing soccer this year. If you cannot make the meeting or have any other questions, please contact Coach Joyner at craigjoyner@anderson5.net . Riley Lovorn Still Making TLH Proud Riley Lovorn (right), 2014 TLH Grad, is Playing Golf for the Clemson Tigers! Riley Lovorn had a stellar career as a golfer at TLH. She graduated last year and went on to play for the Clemson Tigers. While at TLH, she proved herself to be a multi-talented student. Not only was she a star on TLH Girls’ Golf Team, but she also won the 2014 Art Award; was named “Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year;” won the Jamie Shaw Memorial Scholarship, the Frances and Louis Kitching Scholarship, and the Laura Leigh Tye Memorial Scholarship. As a freshman at CU, she could have played back-up to the more experienced players on the team – but no such luck for the upperclassmen. Riley has qualified for the first two Tiger tournaments of the year and appears to be following the success trajectory she set for herself in high school. Good luck to Riley as she becomes a great collegiate golfer for the Clemson Tigers Women's Golf Team. We are proud! T.L. We have the absolute best students at our school. When substitutes come here, they will come by my office to compliment the behavior of students. When our students go on trips, I will get emails from people telling me how polite and nice they were. I want to share below one such email I received today. I am sorry that I am just getting around to writing you. I meant to do it after the Schlotzsky's Invitational meet this past Saturday, Oct. 4th. I want to recognize a show of outstanding sportsmanship by one of your girls cross country runners, Devon Finley. My daughter runs for Wade Hampton HS in Greenville. She ran in the meet Saturday with an ankle injury that no one realized was as bad as it was (or she would not have run)! She typically runs around a 23:00 5k. That day, knowing that her ankle was bothering her and the course was hard, she planned to just take it easy. I have never seen her struggle in a meet as much as she did that day. She never cries, and came by me at mile one crying. I knew she was in pain, but she kept going. At mile 2 I noticed a T.L. Hanna runner that was staying with her, encouraging her, & talking to her every step of the way. Mile 3 came, and she was still with her! Not leaving her side until the very last stretch of the race. I asked some friends of mine, who also have daughters on your team, what her name was. They told me Devon Finley. My daughter could not even talk during the race. She wanted to tell her she didn't have to stay with her. I have a feeling Devon would have stayed with her regardless. At the finish line she was able to hug Devon and thank her. I found her parents, and thanked them too for raising such a compassionate daughter. You don't see this often enough, and I was very moved my her show of sportsmanship! You may have seen this side of her before, but in case you hadn't I wanted to make sure you knew what a wonderful person you have on your team! I feel she should be recognized for her actions. Good luck with the rest of your season! Book Drive In conjunction with the SCABSE, T. L. Hanna is hosting a book drive to collect new or gently used children’s books which will be distributed throughout the community to benefit Anderson School District Five students. The book drive will occur from October 13 – October 24, 2014. Collection boxes will be available for drop off in the following locations at TLH: Media Center, Room 100, Room 117, Room 314, Room 611 and Guidance. If you are cleaning out such items from your home, please remember our book drive. There are many children in our community who do not have children’s books in their homes. Research has shown that a tremendous amount reading expertise can be built in these early years, while children who are not exposed to books and reading may struggle with reading the rest of their lives. Thank you for any children’s books you can contribute. Please beware and talk to grandparents about falling for this. Below is our faculty member’s story. “The Fake Accident Ploy” The con artist gets the victim to wire or send money on the pretext that the person’s child or another relative is in the hospital and needs the money. See more at: http://www.ncoa.org/enhance-economic-security/economic-securityInitiative/savvy-saving-seniors/top-10-scams-targeting.html#sthash.MwjmFdCx.dpuf This recently happened to my husband’s mother who is newly widowed. A group of people called claiming to be friends of one of the grandchildren, Tyler. They called her to inform her of a wreck that happened earlier and that he needed her to go to CVS Drugstore, buy several temporary Visa cards, scratch off the back and read them the numbers to them over the phone. She did as they asked because the individuals said that that the grandson would go to jail if she didn’t do as they said. The grandparent asked to speak to Tyler, and they actually put a young male on the phone to talk to her. He knew to call her “Grandmommy”. He was convincing and knew all of his information and more. They even knew that there was a CVS just across the street which meant that they also knew her address. Before she could get back home, they called her a second time to say that his wreck involved a pregnant female and they needed more money. She fell for it again, buying another Visa and giving them more money. In all, $2,200 was given to them over the phone. The elderly are being targeted. These scam artists are very convincing. Please share with any older relatives, neighbors, friends that you can. Aladdin A co-production between Calhoun Academy of the Arts and Southwood Academy of the Arts.
