Acknowledgements
Many thanks go to each and every one of you who sponsored an event or donated a service. Your energy and devotion to providing marvelous opportunities is deeply appreciated. A special thank you to “first timers,” and to those
who are willing to continue offering wonderful events we look forward to
each year. The success of Dining for Dollar$ is a result of your creative entertaining ideas and gracious hospitality.
Thank you to the incredibly talented Abby Koch, (a valued member of our
church staff) for her many hours spent creating and publishing the bidding
booklet “in-house” which saves us a lot of money. Where does she find all of
those pictures?!
To all of the volunteers who helped at the Dining for Dollar$ table, and who
will be helping during the three weeks of bidding; thanks for showing up and
lending a hand!
To Dave Hunt, a big thank you for serving as our Excel Guru and special consultant. We couldn’t have done it without your knowledge and guidance.
Thank you Peggy and John Holl for creating the bidding tables and signs for
the auction, which make the whole auction process flow smoothly. And a very
special thanks to all who bid generously on events. You get to have fun and
the Church receives needed revenues.
—Marla English and Robie Evans,
Dining for Dollar$ Co-Chairs

Welcome to Dining for Dollar$ 2013
Items in this booklet are segregated by category to make it easier for you to decide which ones
you want to bid on. Carefully review and select the events/services you are most interested in.
After each service on May 5, May 12, and May 19, come to the Lower Patio and Bard Hall and
enter your bids on the bid rosters. Feel free to buy places at events as gifts for your friends
and family, as well as for yourself.
Bids go to the highest bidder. Each bidding category has only the number of spaces available
for the event. The next highest bidder may outbid the last bidder in a category. For example, if
six people bid $30.00 on an event intended for six people and the seventh person bids $40.00,
the last person in the $30.00 category loses the bid.
Buy It Now: The “Buy it Now” (maximum bid) guarantees you seats at the event.
When the “Buy it Now” event category is full the bidding for that event ends.
Family Events: Additional details/instructions will be included on the bidding roster for
those events where a family can bid as a family, not as individuals.
If you want two or more spaces for an event, you may use the same bidding number,
even if you decide later to pay separately. For example, if you and a friend or you and a
spouse want to attend the same event you may write your bid number on two separate
lines on the bid sheet, one per each person attending.
Be sure to monitor your bids up through 1:30 p.m. on May 19, because, in the case of some
popular events, you might be outbid!
Winners: Within two weeks after the bidding closes, all bidders will receive a letter informing
them of what they have won. Exception, for any events taking place in June you will be notified
by May 31.
Payment Schedule:
Single Payment: By July 1, 2013 or
Two Payments: ½ of bid due by July 1 2013;
final payment due by December 1, 2013.
Payment by check (to First UU Church). Include “D4$” and your Bidding Number
to assure credit for your payment. We hope that by spreading out the payment, you
will be able to bid on and enjoy more events.
No refunds! If you win a bid, but can’t attend the event, please contact the host, then donate
your spot to a friend or family member. You may also call the Church Office and ask that
Suzette Southfox, Director of Membership and Development, donate your spot to a New
Church Member. Money will not be refunded.
All proceeds go to the Church and portions that exceed the fair market value of the event are
tax deductible. Consult your tax advisor as needed.
If you have any questions, please contact Dave Hunt
at 858-945-4825 or uusancal@san,rr.com.

The movement began in 1897 to obtain the right of all women to vote and finally
on August 26, 1920 it became law. Please come dressed in period costume, and
celebrate this historical event. We will discuss how it all began and learn why we
have so much to thank those courageous women who made it possible for our
voices to be heard today. Enjoy a delightful lunch made from recipes from the
original Suffragette cookbook and followed by dessert and sherry. A special surprise piece of jewelry will also be included as a remembrance of this historical

#111 Gourmet Vegetarian Tasting Menu
Host(s): Laurie Crehan & Newt Ferris
Date: 8/10/2013
Time: 6:00 PM
Our meal will be based on the recipes of Yotam Ottolenghi, an Israeli‐born
chef and cookbook author known for dishes that emphasize vegetables. He
lives in London, where he and his Palestinian business partner own three
popular takeout food shops and two new restaurants. Ottolenghi has been the
author of the weekly New Vegetarian column in the Guardian newspaper for 12
years. Many of his recipes feature middle‐eastern flavors. We will sample a
variety of his creations in this multi‐course meal made from recipes from his
cookbook Plenty, including dishes such as Eggplant with Buttermilk Sauce,
Vegetable Paella, and Cabbage and Kohlrabi Salad. Note: These dishes are not
vegan as many will contain dairy.

#112 French Vietnamese Dinner
Host(s): Laurie Crehan & Newt Ferris
Starting Bid
: $ 40

: $ 75
France’s colonization of Vietnam and much of what was
then known as Indochina began as early as the 17th century. Through much of the 19th century and until after
WWII, France ruled Vietnam with an iron fist. Even
though the Vietnamese resented their French overlords,
they eagerly embraced French foods such as bread
(especially in the form of baguettes), crepes, pates, and
sauces. Join us for a multi-course dinner that demonstrates how the comingling of these two cultures produced
unique, delicious foods.

immense tapestry of cuisines.” Join us for a multi-course dinner

The 7th annual and very popular traditional Moroccan dinner with
UU additions served in style of a Chinese Banquet, one dish at a
time. Start off with the traditional (and delicious) Bisteeya, a crisp
pie-like dish with chicken, egg and sugared almonds. This course
is served with hot mint tea. Then comes Harira Soup followed by
Seafood Tagine, Couscous with 7 vegetables interspersed with a
selection of salads to include Moroccan Melange, accompanied by
compatible wines and anise scented bread. To end the evening, a
special Moroccan pastry and Pistachio ice cream will be accompanied by spiced (decaf) coffee and various liqueurs. Dave will sing

#306 Poetry with POP!
Host(s): Harry Griswold & Stephanie Webber
Poetry in a Sunday service gets one shot. It has to have POP! - get our attention, make us feel something,
get its point across. Those are heavy demands on a few words. Resident poet Harry Griswold is determined to find out what kind of poetry might work well in a service and he hopes to uncover some really
good poems along the way. He's on a quest for answers. An old writing adage says: "No surprise for the
writer, no surprise for the reader". Thus, students are told don't bother to write a poem if you already
know the ending. This search is like that. Harry will share what he finds in a lively Sunday afternoon discussion and reading of poems accompanied by delicious finger food, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks. Fun!

#508 Japanese Friendship Garden After Hours Tour
then Margaritas & Tasty Treats
Host(s): Joan Cudhea & Tomas Firle, Dave Hunt & Toni Turbyfill
Most people have been to Balboa Park and its many museums. But few are familiar with one of the
gems of the park—the Japanese Friendship Garden, also known as San Kei En (Three Scene Garden). Tucked on a spit of land next to the Organ Pavilion just below the Prado Restaurant, this
lovely 2‐acre garden includes a strolling garden, a dry Zen‐style frame garden, a Koi Pond with
Turtle Island, and other exquisite features. The 9-acre canyon expansion will be open and flowering
cherries in full bloom will enchant you. Since Joan is a Docent at San Kei En, you will be treated to
details and stories that you would otherwise miss, and we will have the park to ourselves as it
closes at 4:00 PM to the general public. Following the tour, we will drive back to church where
Dave Hunt and Toni Turbyfill will mix their famous Margaritas. Wine, iced green tea, and soft
drinks will also be available, along with a variety of hors d'oeuvres, where we can relax and enjoy a
peaceful afternoon with our UU friends, new and old. Note: Meet at the Church parking lot to
carpool no later than 3:45 PM, or meet at the entrance to the Japanese Friendship Garden at 4:00
PM. Latecomers will skip the canyon portion of the tour, but will still enjoy the exquisite upper

#510 California Impressionists at the Irvine Museum
Host(s): Steve Howard & Beverly Brown
This is an all-day outing to Irvine. We don't know what will be

California scenes. We will gather at our house in University City

The Irvine Museum is small, so we will spend about an hour enjoying the paintings. Then, lunch at an inexpensive deli nearby

Come and enjoy these spectacular 40 acres of wilderness that Robie's great-grandparents and great-great aunt
homesteaded in 1917. The trickling riverbed of the Sweetwater River runs through the property and makes nice
viewing or exploring from the homebase. It is a private, peaceful and relaxing spot where the only thing viewable
are mountains, wildflowers and birds. The river trickles through huge slabs of granite hills and the family motto is
"Don't run on the rocks!" The fall is hard on the head and other miscellaneous bones. The risk is yours. For the
hearty hikers, we will have a group hike up to Loveland Reservoir Dam along an old road where vehicles no longer
travel. Late morning snacks and an afternoon barbecue will be prepared by Chef Ray. The non-hikers can hang out
at homebase overlooking the riverbed and just "chill out." We hear there will be a storyteller present to tell of the
old days! It's a place we call the "middle of nowhere" and means a lot to us. There is no electricity or running water, but there is a 37' RV with a generator, water and toilet! This event sold out last year! Bid early!!

Join me in a rich day of exploring your inner life through the artistic and therapeutic process of SoulCollage®. This is a process of creating unique collaged cards from your found and magazine images for the
primary purpose of self-exploration, self-acceptance, and soul-tending. I have been exploring the SoulCollage® process for about three years and recently completed the training to become a facilitator. For me,
the process has been a meaningful journey into my creative soul. This process is simple, fun, and artistic;
yet, no previous art experience is necessary to have a perfectly wonderful day and create personal and
amazing art. Anyone able to manage scissors and glue can create beautiful cards and enjoy sharing them
with others. This day will include a brief outline of the process, an opportunity to create one or more
cards from magazine images or personal art that you copy and bring. I will provide all art materials
needed, but encourage you to start saving magazine images that are meaningful to you. Our day will conclude as we join as a group and intuitively let the cards voice their messages to our inner muses and willing souls. I will be in touch with the winning bidders to provide examples and answer any questions before
we meet at my home on September 7th. I will provide drinks and cookies and ask that you bring your
own bag lunch.

#713 How To Refresh & Preserve Your Favorite Photos
Host(s): Maggie Marshall
Most people have hundreds (and many of you thousands) of pictures on your phones and computers. Some
of you have heavy old dusty photo albums plus boxes of loose pictures but rarely have a quick way to show
your favorites to friends and family. Are you looking for a creative way to share your treasured memories
with others? If so, this might be the workshop for you! You can think of me as a “photo coach” with a
light-hearted sense of humor. I’m ready to help you move forward on something you’ve wanted to do for a
very long time. Going through snapshots can be an emotional journey, and I promise to keep the process simple.
My philosophy is “less is more”! Our process will begin
with a meet-and-greet to clearly outline what needs to be
done, and when we’re finished working together you will
have learned: how to easily select your VERY favorite photos, the space-saver method of cropping, and the practical
techniques of gluing your pictures into a fresh mini photo
album. I have experience teaching this 7-step process at
Voluntary Simplicity workshops and it is a privilege to
work with individuals to help capture and preserve their
priceless memories. Your bid is for a three-hour one-toone session plus a start-up overview. I'll come to your
home, or we can work in my home office in Del Cerro.

#720 Tap Away Your Pain and Painful Emotions
Host(s): Lianda Ludwig
Have any STRESS in your life? Continuous stress can cause emotional and physical pain.
Instead of relying on a pill, or a doctor's visit, you can learn an amazing technique to tap
away the problem. It's fast and effective and it lasts! In fact, EFT, Meridian tapping is so
amazing, that most people think it works like being hypnotized, or mind over matter. But
EFT is based on the practice of Chinese acupuncture that has been used for successfully
for thousands of years. Instead of inserting tiny needles into acupuncture energy meridians,
you gently tap on your own body meridians located close to the skin’s surface. Bring your
pain and your problems, and we'll tap them away! Lianda Ludwig, M.S. is a Stress Relief
Coach-sultant (ask her what that means!).

Buy It Now
: $ 150
Host(s): Maxine Levaren
Do you have a novel, a memoir, a cookbook, a collection of poetry or short stories, or any other type
of book you'd like to publish? I can help you create your book, for print, and for the Kindle and Nook.
A self-published author, I've already done it, and can do it for you, too. When you have completed
your manuscript, we'll spend about 3 hours formatting it for print and creating a cover (we'll use
your photo or design.) Once the format is accepted, you'll order one or more proof copies, which you
will go over carefully to check for any spelling or grammatical errors, enter them in the manuscript
and reformat. You can do as many proofs as you want—when you're satisfied, we'll format if for the
Kindle and Nook, and then you're off and running with your published work!
