It is my privilege to write the foreword to the Annual Report of Brahmi Educational And Cultural Trust, Bangalore for the financial year 2013-14. Another successful year has been completed in the life of our school Anjana Vidya Kendra. Life is full of uncertainties, but our dear children make it certain that they distinguish themselves academically as well as in the spheres of sports and culture, year after year, scaling new heights. That is one certainty that I have come to look forward to! Of course, the talents and energies of our children have been skillfully channelized by our team of dedicated teachers, under the guiding spirit of Dr. Channa Raju, Mrs. Uma Maheshwari and our young and enthusiastic Headmaster Sri Sujay. Our SSLC results are on an upward curve and this year, we had a pass percentage of 100 and our 19 students gave us 5 Distinctions and 12 First Classes! The top score was over 95%! Need I say more? Keeping in mind our goal of holistic development of the individual, our children were encouraged to participate in cultural and sports events at cluster and district levels, where they earned laurels for their school. The row of trophies and awards I saw in the school are gleaming with the pride of achievement. The food and Nutrition program and several volunteering initiatives have significantly contributed to this success. The need of the hour is to inculcate respect and appreciation for people of a different culture, language and religion than one's own. What better way to do it than celebrating festivals and commemorating important events of people belonging to various denominations? Fun-filled celebrations with song, dance and sweets usher in more goodwill and acceptance than any lecture can do. This is what we at Anjana believe in and the lovely photos in the Annual Report are the testimony! While we have much to be joyous about, we also have much to feel apprehensive about. The finances are a constant worry. In the last three years the prices of essential food items and fuel have risen 200% to 300%, leading to a cascading effect on the cost of living, way beyond our meager resources. The scope for raising the tuition fees is very limited in our rural environment and among the targeted daily wage earning community. The silver lining is that our patrons, well-wishers and volunteers have stood steadfast with us all these years in our journey and whose generosity has truly been our oxygen. Our deep gratitude goes to all of them. Anjana Vidya Kendra has lit a small candle of aspiration in the village. I earnestly hope that our donors observe what wonders their kindness has achieved in the lives of our rural children and decide to continue with their support even more vigorously and make the candle glow brighter and unwaveringly. Till a reasonable corpus is built, worries about sustainability will continue to haunt us and hinder the deepening of our existing programs or contemplating future progress. I am sure our well -wishers are listening! Brahmi Annual Report 2012-14 2 PART I : MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION A. The Science festival conducted as part of CSIR-NAL school adoption program was designed to create excitement and get rural students interested in learning science. Several Senior Scientists from National Aerospace Laboratories led by Directors Sri. Shyam Chetty were present to watch young scientist in action. ADMINISTRATIVE EXPENSES Brahmi uses the AnjanaVidya Kendra school premises as its office and does not have paid administrative staff. All activities pertaining to administration are carried out by the members of the board or volunteers purely on honorary basis. The same philosophy is implemented in AnjanaVidya Kendra School with teachers sharing all administrative activities of the school. 2. PARENTS CONTRIBUTION No tuition fee was charged in the first years of our school. We found a link between the school dropout rate and parents contribution, with dropout rates being high during the time when parents got education, school supplies and nutrition free. Team Brahmi implemented the scheme of monthly tuition fee/child equivalent to 1 day’s labour the school dropout rates reduced and we have had no instance of school dropout in the recent years. Parents contribute to 25-30% of our overall expenses in the form of tuition fee. The existing policy of the organization – Monthly Tuition fee at AnjanaSchool = 1 days unskilled male labour (payable in 2 installments during the academic year) For the year 2013-14 the tuition fee was Rs. 500/month. Nutrition/NoonMeal – Free (Sponsored by NGO partners/Supporters/Individuals) School Supplies – Free (Notebooks and Textbooks). 3. SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships were provided to deserving students in order to help them continue on the path of education either at AnjanaVidya Kendra School or pursue post-school education (11th and 12th /PUC); the following patrons have sponsored these scholarships : Sri. FUTURE AN FINANCIAL REQUIREMENTS Sustaining the current Educational and Food programs at school are on the top of our agenda. Brahmi is exploring possibility of extending seamless education to our children till 12th grade. The idea is being discussed with patrons and supporters, in view of requirement of additional funds towards appropriate infrastructure development and providing facilities and other implications. Implementing Govt’s directives on child safety measures. Appointing skilled and experienced – and motivated teachers – for a rural school, away from Bangalore city continues to be a challenge. Strengthening participation of charity partners to ensure our existing programs such as nutrition and volunteering activities such as providing yoga classes continue. REQUIREMENTS In order to maintain quality of education trained and experienced teachers will have to be retained; staff salaries would rise by a min. of 10% every year and in addition, teachers and staff require basic facilities such as accommodation close to the campus. Our laboratory, computer center and library continue to require support. Storage racks, tables, Equipment, Consumables and Books The school is running on meager corpus. Corpus position needs to be strengthened, especially with programs such as Noon meal in place. Scholarships to sponsor Tuition Fee and School Supplies for children at Anjana Scholarships to support higher education for students graduating from Anjana Classroom furniture for 4 high school class rooms Replacement of flooring and the windows in three old classrooms. Outdoor Sports and Play Equipment School Supplies – Text Books, Notebooks, Uniforms, Bags, Sweaters.
