Fall 2013 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Annual Report of Giving WELCOME l 2 From the Editor Another year has passed so quickly. My mind races as I ponder over what I wish to share in this letter. Each year I write about the wonderful experiences and accomplishments at Catherine McAuley High School, and each year they seem to get better and better. We are truly blessed. Kathryn McBrady ’15 is part of the Maine Youth Leadership Program for sophomores who effectively lead and serve. The 2013 Varsity Lacrosse Team was chosen by other lacrosse teams in the SMAA to receive the Class A Eastern Maine Sportsmanship Award. McAuley’s Class of 2013 earned $1.4 million in college scholarships. For the sixth straight year, McAuley’s graduating class achieved 100% college acceptance. Rachel Taylor ’15 joined thousands of other cyclists and the American Lung Association in the Trek Across Maine. It was Taylor’s seventh year on the Trek with her father; together, they have raised over $8,000 in seven years. Taylor Whaley ’15 & Katie Call ’15 attended the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Program for outstanding sophomores committed to leadership, service and innovation. 2012/13 faculty and staff are truly committed to supporting our young women, not only by their hard work, but through 100% participation in the Annual Fund Campaign. Madeleine LaBrecque ’16, Maria Ramsay ’14, Nina Intharakunha ’16 and Julia Cornell ’14 attended Seeds of Peace this summer. McAuley’s yearbook was named a 2013 Jostens National Yearbook of Excellence for being a dynamic and engaging piece. Greta DiPierro ’15 & Adele Werner ’15 received the Rotary Youth Leadership Award for commitment to leadership, citizenship and personal growth. Catherine McAuley High School 631 Stevens Avenue, Portland, Maine 04103 | 207-797-3802 | mcauleyhs.org As alumnae, students, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends of CMHS, you know in your mind and heart what a truly special place this is for the community. In my years working in the Advancement Office, I have celebrated thirteen first days of school and attended thirteen commencements – watching, sharing and celebrating in the transformation of the lives of nearly 1,000 young women – our young women. I would not trade these years for anything. Beyond our current students and recent alumnae, I have had the honor of celebrating many anniversary reunions, as well as thirteen 50th class reunions, with so many amazing, loving, talented and supportive women – fellow alumnae that I am so proud to call my “sisters.” I hope that you take the time to examine each photo and read each line so you, too, can feel, through this Mercian, the love, commitment and success that we are so fortunate to experience each day at our school. We see great support for this mission through volunteers and our generous donors. Families who choose a private education make a commitment and sacrifice because they believe in its value. Many who attend McAuley would not have this opportunity if not for the sacrifices of the donors – listed throughout these pages. THANK YOU. I hope you enjoy this publication and remain involved with Catherine McAuley High School as we confidently forge into the future. M ORE GREEN IS GOLDEN Several environmental sustainability projects are underway at McAuley. Our physics and environmental science students have partnered together to build an innovative, bike-powered milkshake/smoothie maker as part of a greater project: funding a water bottle filling station to reduce plastic waste in the school. Milkshakes and smoothies will be on sale this fall, with the goal of purchasing the water station as soon as possible. Three apple trees will be planted on the campus to teach our girls about cultivation, while a compost bin was recently added to the school’s cafeteria. McAuley food waste will be composted at the home of history teacher, Joe Wagner, who will use the soil as fertilizer for his apple trees. McAuley students will work with Wagner to press and sell cider in the fall to benefit the Keep Me Warm fuel assistance program. These projects are the culmination of a year-long McAuley initiative inspired by the Sisters-of-Mercy-affiliated Pachamama Alliance, creating a socially just, environmentally sustainable, spiritually-fulfilled human presence on this planet – A New Dream for Humanity (www.pachamama.org). 2. E XCELLENT EQUESTRIENNE Elizabeth Emerson ‘16 recently competed in her first three-phase event on July 7, at Pipestave Hill Horse Trials in West Newbury, MA, an event recognized by the U.S. Eventing Association. Liz competed in three different tests at the Modified Beginner Novice level: a dressage test, a stadium jumping test with jumps at 2’9”, and a cross country test. She received third place in dressage with a score of 32.0 or 136/200. Liz also competed in cross country and show jumping, clearing both rounds. Once both were complete and her scores were entered, she finished in second place for overall competition. Liz has been riding for seven years and has a true talent and passion for the horses and this sport. The summer before her freshman year at CMHS, she and another student worked several hours researching the opportunity of an Equestrian Club at the school. Due to their efforts and the willingness of Linda Freeman, Guidance Coordinator, as moderator, McAuley was able to re-establish this club after thirty years. Congratulations, Liz, on your accomplishments! 5 3. S OCIAL ACTION FOR SUMMER FUN On Tuesday, May 14, the Social Action Club sponsored a dress-up day to benefit Camp Susan Curtis, a summer camp for underprivileged children located in Stoneham, Maine. McAuley students donated bug spray, sunscreen and money to this specific cause. At the last Social Action Club meeting for the 2012/2013 school year, Mia Fisher ‘14, the Club’s newly-elected president, presented Camp Susan Curtis’ Executive Director, Melissa Cilley, with a check for $360 and baskets of bug spray and sunscreen. The monetary donation will be used to replace the beds at the camp for the summer residents. 4. LOOK OUT BELOW The annual physics egg drop is a highlight of McAuley’s physics classes! Each spring, physics students use their vast knowledge to construct a device of only toothpicks, glue, and a few sheets of paper that will carry an egg safely to the ground upon being dropped from the second floor. Faculty and students gather in support and excitement to watch the year’s unique, hand crafted devices dropped one by one from the balcony or window. It always proves to be a fun-filled, though potentially messy, culmination to the year! 5. S UMMER FUN This summer, we offered a variety of camps to the community. Soccer, Field Hockey, Softball, Lacrosse, Basketball and Study Skills filled the fields, gym and classrooms with the sound of enthusiastic laughter and sportsmanship. The girls learned new skills and made lots of new friends. We heard that some of the girls are even marking their calendars for next year’s camps! LEADERSHIP l 5 LEADERSHIP Introducing Deborah Kost Dirigo Girls State McAuley welcomes a new Head of School Another Example of the All-Girl Advantage McAuley is pleased to announce the arrival of Deborah Kost (pronounced like “coast”) as our new Head of School. On August 25, 2013, Deborah succeeded retiring Head of School Margaret Downing, who returned to her family and professional life in Massachusetts. Thank you, Margaret Downing! Our deepest thanks goes out to our retiring Head of School, Margaret (Peg) Downing. Ms. Downing was a strong steward of McAuley during her three years of tenure, overseeing the expansion of our Virtual High School program, raising SAT scores significantly above the state average, and a 100% college placement rate for graduating seniors. The McAuley community is very grateful for Ms. Downing’s commitment to our school and will greatly miss her wealth of expertise, drive for academic excellence, and passion for upholding the values of the Sisters of Mercy. We also extend our congratulations to staff members, Lynne Erkkinen and Claire Blais, on their retirements after years of exemplary service. Lynne spent many years shaping minds and encouraging girls to think outside the box. She will now spend her days enjoying time with her grandsons. Claire taught Religion at McAuley and in her retirement will be traveling to Arizona to visit family. “She shares our passion for providing a world-class academic program and deeply understands the value of an all-girls education.” Deborah brings over 20 years of school leadership and teaching experience to her new position, as well as a strong belief in an all-girls education. Deborah served as Dean of Students for the Friends Select School in Philadelphia, Head of School for the Haddonfield Friends School in New Jersey and Head of School for The Janus School in Pennsylvania. She has most recently been serving as an educational and leadership consultant for several schools, including a Catholic girls high school near Philadelphia. Deborah earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Arizona and her Masters Degree in Education from Lehigh University, along with a Certificate and Fellowship work at both Villanova and Columbia Universities. “We are thrilled to welcome Deborah to McAuley. She shares our passion for providing a world-class —Heidi Osborn academic program and deeply understands the value of an all-girls education,” states Heidi Osborn, Chair of the McAuley Board of Trustees. “Under her leadership, we can confidently take the school to the next level while continuing to offer young women a complete, holistic education— fostering growth and development in mind, body and spirit.” The school enlisted the help of acclaimed search firm, Carney, Sandoe & Associates, to identify key prospects to fill the leadership position. Upon reviewing candidates both locally and from across the country and drawing feedback from faculty, staff and parents, the search committee—comprised of board members and representatives from the Sisters of Mercy— selected Ms. Kost. The selection was based upon her breadth of experience, proven results, and passion for the McAuley mission of encouraging young women to find their voice as they become leaders in the school, the community and beyond. l this june, Carolyn Liziewski ‘14 and Sophie Warren ‘14 packed their bags and headed to Husson University in Bangor for the 67th session of Dirigo Girls State. Sophie Warren, ’14 (left) and Carolyn Liziewski, ’14 (right) with Senator Susan Collins at Eggs & Issues in August 2013. American Legion Auxiliary Girls State is a nonpartisan program teaching young women responsible citizenship and love for God and Country. Since the inception of the program in 1937, nearly one million young women have had the opportunity to learn first-hand how their state and local governments work. Carolyn and Sophie were chosen by the faculty to represent McAuley at Dirigo. Participants were divided into towns and took on separate leadership roles in government. Carolyn served as her town moderator, officiating a town meeting following the rules of parliamentary procedure. Sophie served as a selectwoman, answering questions and offering opinions on town legislation for her peers. Later in the week, they were divided into political parties—Carolyn, the Federalist Party and Sophie, the Nationalist Party. The parties caucused and the girls participated in mock county and state government. By the end of the week, Sophie had conducted a successful gubernatorial campaign and was elected as the Dirigo Girls State Governor. Carolyn’s Secretary of State campaign was also successful, and when her party won a legislative majority she took on the role in Sophie’s cabinet. At the final awards ceremony, Sophie gave her inaugural address before the citizens of Dirigo and was sworn in to serve as the governor for the upcoming year. She was honored with a government participation award for her leadership role and was chosen to attend Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. in late July, where she served as one of Maine’s senators. Carolyn was selected as the Outstanding Girl from her town and as the Second Outstanding Girl in the state. She was the first runner-up to attend Girls Nation. Both Carolyn and Sophie thoroughly enjoyed their experiences at Dirigo Girls State and they are excited to share their new governing and leadership skills—and memories. At McAuley, they both serve on the Student Council Executive Board, and Sophie is the Senior Class President. In addition to their activities at McAuley and their roles at Girls State, Carolyn is a former United States Senate Page and Sophie is very involved in the youth empowerment group Seeds of Peace. 6 COMMENCEMENT l Extraordinary Essayist On June 16, 2013, the Portland Press Herald featured ten college entrance essays that caught their attention. Molly Mack, CMHS ’13, was one of the ten, and the excerpt below explains why. Congratulations, Molly, and good luck with your nursing studies at St. Joseph’s College. “I realized I had experienced something special in my life ... to witness another’s end of life is eye-opening and illuminating. Witnessing the death of my grandfather, but more so assisting and comforting him at his bedside, I learned many things about myself I may have never acquired without this experience ... I needed to feel assured that Grampa felt as comfortable as possible and experienced as little pain as possible; but most importantly, I wanted him to feel the love of his family surrounding him. These goals are the same goals all dedicated hospice nurses desire for their patients ... caregiving came naturally to me. I was calm, compassionate, and selfless while assisting my ailing grandfather. At the time, my only focus consisted of what I could do next to provide him more support. My friends, my basketball game, my homework suddenly became unimportant. This heartbreaking yet significant occurrence provided me with new knowledge about myself and the woman I will one day become ... Now, my sole focus is to learn how to be a skilled and empathetic hospice nurse. Through his death, Grampa showed me how I want to live the rest of my life.” 6 COMMUNITY Front row, from left: Dick Peterson, Heidi Osborn, Susan Peck, Sharon McKenna. The exciting evening featured great auction items and a dynamic new emcee, Jim Fitzgerald, Par ’13. The energy was incredible and so was the fundraising total: $50,000 for McAuley’s Annual Fund. It’s always great to catch up with old friends while supporting such a wonderful cause. If you would like to help plan this event, contact the Advancement Office with questions at 207-797-3802 x2017. We are looking forward to the 2014 Auction, so mark your calendars for March 29! SEAS OF PEACE This summer Sophie Warren ’14 had the unique privilege of setting sail from Boston Harbor on the beautiful S.S. Roseway as a participant in the Seas of Peace Program. This is the first year Seas of Peace has been able to do its land-portion at its camp location in Maine, and it was a special gift for all involved. The participants worked hard for a week - prior to sailing, undergoing intensive dialogue and leadership training sessions, group challenge activities, sailing instruction, and so much more, including cooking and cleaning for the entire group! The 16 participants truly gave their all to this program and to one another, and they certainly carried a great deal of pride, enthusiasm, energy, and desire to keep growing and learning with them onto the boat. Over a seven day period, these young adults worked right alongside a professional crew to steer and man the boat, while continuing the important and substantive conversations they began at Camp. This was a transformative experience, and we are all proud of the commitment Sophie and her teammates exhibited. On Friday evening, alumnae gathered in the mall for wine, cheese and reminiscing. On Saturday, we filled the Auditorium for Mass with Fr. Picard and our special 50th anniversary graduates, while many classes held additional class celebrations throughout Portland. We had many special guests in attendance at our lobster salad picnic: Sr. Mary Louis Auger, CHS ’37, oldest alumna; Laura Shorthill, CMHS ’03, youngest alumna; and the alumna traveling farthest was Joyce Fuller Norton, CHS ’53 traveling from Granite Bay, California. BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT After a five-year break, McAuley reinstated its annual golf tournament and for the first time partnered with the Jimmy Fund. The June 24 tournament at the Falmouth Country Club raised over $7,500 for McAuley, as well as $7,500 for the Jimmy Fund. We held an in-house competition to see how many raffle tickets the girls could sell in exchange for a cash prize. Olivia Karen Pitale Woodbury, CMHS ’84, Par ‘09, with husband Dalphonse ’15 sold almost $1,000 Jack, son David and friend Quinn O’Hanlon. worth to win; Emma Downey ’16 came in second selling close to $500; and Allie ‘14 and Sarah ‘16 Clement sold $400 to share third place. Great job, girls! Next year, we’d like to see every girl sell at least five booklets and be in the running to win a cash prize at the end. “It was a little choppy, but I felt great out there,” said the incoming freshwoman. ”This is my third year competing and by far my best.” Neff-Jendrasko finished third overall in the woman’s 2.5k and was also the youngest woman finisher in that distance. Phenomenal work, Ana! TEAM KYLE On Tuesday, August 6, Emma Spies, ‘17 lead another successful fundraiser for Angel Flight Northeast, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit that provides free plane rides to children and adults suffering from cancer and other chronic debilitating diseases and conditions. This year’s event was held in memory of Kyle St. Clair, an eight-year-old Scarborough boy who passed away in January 2013 from lung disease and dysmotility, a gastrointestinal disease that attacks the digestive tract. St. Clair himself benefited from the Angel Flight program. Spies and members of her Scarborough neighborhood added $2600 to the already-raised $4000 collected over the past three years for this organization. Lemonade, iced tea, sweets and pizza were some of the featured treats for purchase, along with fun activities for children and adults alike. Kudos to you, Emma, on your dedication to serving others! And So Does Run for Hope Living Her Dream Our Annual Benefit Run Goes the Distance Again Sarah Ryan takes a new job with WNBA champs Sarah Marshall Ryan ’03 left her mark on McAuley, both academically and athletically. She was a three sport athlete (a rarity in those times) and a member of the National Honor Society. Sarah earned many accolades through basketball, including leading the McAuley Lions to two straight Class A Basketball State Championships. She was chosen as the Western Class A tournament’s “Red” McMann Award— the MVP Award for the tournament—three successive years. Perhaps the highest honor was being chosen Gatorade Player of the Year in 2002 and 2003. Sarah was a star point guard at Boston College, where she led the Eagles to the National Tournament each year and graduated with a degree in communications. TOP LEFT: Alumnae gathering around our mascot to celebrate the event. Congratulations to McAuley’s Outdoor Track Team for a great showing at this year’s Class C State Track Meet. TOP RIGHT: Lacrosse Team posing in shirts they designed to wear for the race. BELOW: Four generations of the Rand family walking, running and cheering! The 7th Annual Run for Hope to Benefit the Jim and Maxine Pouravelis Fund had both a great turnout and beautiful running weather. What more could you ask for? On May 18th, 2013 over 200 runners and walkers came out to support the Jim and Maxine Pouravelis Fund, which awards tuition scholarships to deserving young women at McAuley. A flurry of runners took off from Stevens Avenue early in the morning, and in just 18:1, Gilberto Rosado of Portland finished first for the men and three minutes later, Tessa Prince of Portland finished first for the women. We always enjoy seeing familiar groups sign up for the Run. This year, we had several alumnae participate along with their families (pictured above), as well as current McAuley athletic teams. The McAuley Lacrosse Team (pictured above) won the Best Group participant award for the third consecutive year. Through your support and commitment, we continue to offer scholarships—and the All Girl Advantage—to dedicated young women. Thanks to the generosity of our community, we were able to award $20,000 to ten students for the 2013-2014 school year. They are so grateful for the opportunity. Don’t forget to start training and mark your calendars for next year’s event on Saturday, May 17, 2014. Sarah Marshall Ryan ‘03 celebrates her new job with the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA. Today, Sarah is still very much in the game. The Atlanta Dream, which currently owns the best record in the WNBA’s Eastern Conference, has hired Sarah as sponsorship sales consultant. “Sarah has played women’s basketball at an elite level. She has a true passion for the game and knowledge of everything that goes into it,” said Ashley Preisinger, CEO of the Dream. “She could do many different things at this stage in her life, and we are thrilled to have her,” she adds. Ryan, who regularly attends Dream games with her husband, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, will support the team’s efforts in sponsorship sales. Since graduating, she has held administrative roles at various companies in Boston and Atlanta. Recently, she has been volunteering on a daily basis with the Boys & Girls Club’s after-school program. “It’s a thrill to return to basketball, even in a non-playing capacity.” said Ryan. “I’m passionate about sports and bringing attention to the women who play them. I hope my perspective as a former player can open people’s eyes to how great this team and the WNBA are.” Ryan (then Sarah Marshall) started three seasons for Boston College at point guard and ended her career second on the school’s all-time assists list. She was a three-time conference academic all-star, and was a part of two teams that made the Sweet Sixteen. The two-time Eastern Conference Champion Atlanta Dream, 10-3, is in its sixth season at Philips Arena as part of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Dream qualified for the playoffs in each of the past four seasons, including back-to-back conference titles in 2010 and 2011. Season tickets and single-game tickets for the 2013 season can be purchased by calling (877) 977-7729 or visiting www.AtlantaDream.net. l 10 There’s Still Time to Take Your Seat Looking for that special way to celebrate your favorite alumnae, teacher or staff member? LEGACY A Legacy of Learning through Music Plays On l 11 LEGACY In Memoriam, Sister Therese Harnois A legacy of music, service and love lives on. PHOTO, TOP LEFT: Sr. Mary Gratia and Sr. Therese Harnois in the Motherhouse. CENTER: Harnois Family Orchestra: Evangeline (cello), Mom/Marie (piano), Pauline (flute), Therese (violin), and Pierre (clarinet). RIGHT: Sister Harnois at a family picnic lunch in Rockland, Maine. Sister Harnois gets an autograph from composer Tim Janus at a concert at McAuley in 2012. The Sister Therese Harnois Scholarship was established in January 2013 in memory of Sister’s lifelong dedication to educating students through music. She was an accomplished musician and spent several years teaching at McAuley. After Sister retired, she continued to volunteer at CMHS, playing the piano at Masses, commencements, and performances. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who has the same love and appreciation of music and the fine arts that Sr. Therese held so dear. The recipient will have a financial need, and preference will be given to a returning student in her junior or senior year. The scholarship will be awarded by the Scholarship Committee at the end of the academic year to be funded in the fall of the following academic year. Should you wish to contribute to this scholarship please contact Eileen Veroneau Brown in the Advancement Office at 207797-3802 or eileen.brown@mcauleyhs. org. More details surrounding awards and criteria can be found at www.mcauleyhs.org. McAuley lost one of its dearest educators and supporters this January, when Sister M. Therese Harnois, RSM (also known as Sr. Mary Evangelista) passed away at the age of 86. One of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas and a longtime department chair at McAuley, Sister instilled her love of music and joy in service in generations of McAuley girls. Even after retirement, she accompanied some of our most moving moments on piano—Masses, commencements and performances. While we feel a tremendous sense of loss, we also feel great gratitude. Because of Sister, there is more music in our hearts. Sr. Therese was born in Portland, the daughter of Arthur Harnois and Marie Evangeline Giboin Harnois. Sister graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy, Portland. She joined her sister, Sr. Mary Gratia Harnois, and entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1947 from St. Joseph’s Parish. Sister began her higher education at St. Joseph’s College in Standish, subsequently earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music from Boston University. In addition to her early training, Sister had done extensive studies in music, specifically organ and church music at Marywood College, Pennsylvania, and Manhattanville College, New York. After completion of her education, Sister Therese began her ministry in music as a classroom teacher. She taught at St. Francis Parish, Brownville, Junction; St. Mary’s, Presque Isle; St. Joseph’s Parish, Gardiner; St. Theresa School, Brewer; St. Athanasius, Rumford; Immaculate Heart of Mary School, Fairfield; Cathedral School, Portland; before going to the newly built Catherine McAuley High School where she chaired the music department for 20 years. Her former students would often remark how she passed on her love of music to them, and they, in turn, gave it to their children. During her retirement years, she kept busy at St. Pius Church as organist and receptionist; taking telephone duty at St. Joseph’s Convent, Portland and at St. Peter’s Parish as Organist, Choir Director and telephone duty. One of her special volunteer works was to send religious magazines and books to those who were in jail or prison. She would often tuck in a religious card to let them know that they were prayed for. Sr. Therese came from a family of musicians. Her special instrument was the violin for which she had a great talent. Sr. Therese enjoyed music and was more than happy to join a chorus or be in a barbershop quartet. A gracious and humble lady, Sr. Therese carried out whatever she did with charity, simplicity and kindness, living her motto, Templum Dio (Temple of God). In addition to her beloved parents, Arthur and Marie Evangeline, she was predeceased by her siblings, Ernestine Harnois, Evangeline DeRoche, SJA ’42, Pierre Harnois, Rosemarie Taliento, SJA ‘49 and Yvonne Hagerty, SJA ‘54. Shortly following her death her sister, Sr. Mary Gratia (Pauline), SJA ‘42 passed. She is survived by many devoted family members and friends. Along with her sisters listed above - the following are alumnae of SJA/CMHS: Claire Deroche, SJA ’67, Cecile Deroche-Cain, SJA ’68, Celeste Deroche, CMHS ’78, Camille Deroche Clifford, CMHS ’83, Lisa Taliento Agren, CMHS ’76, Corinne Agren, CMHS ’07, Allana Agren, CMHS ’13, Gina Taliento St. Clair, CMHS ’79, Maria Taliento Segal, CMHS ’79, Lauren Segal, CMHS ’07, Carla Taliento Savino, CMHS ’81, Krista Taliento, CMHS ’84, and Ann-Marie Taliento Bolduc, CMHS ’87. In celebration and stewardship of the legacy of Sister Therese Harnois, McAuley has founded an academic scholarship that will assist young women with a passion for music and the fine arts with tuition in their junior and senior years (see sidebar at left). We are so grateful to have known her, and determined to see her legacy of learning through music play on. l 12 COMMENCEMENT l 13 From left, graduates of the Class of 2013: Caitlyn Connolly, Charlotte Murphy, Rachel Wallace, Emily Chandler, Amy Zhang, Audrey Thames, Juwan Yanga, Kathleen Neault & Natalie Brown. Commencement 2013 “We, as McAuley girls and as the Class of 2013, have been competitive with other schools, other classes and other programs, but collaborative with each other. Here we encourage one another to succeed, to pursue academic, as well as athletic, humanitarian, and extracurricular, excellence.” —Taylor Church, CMHS ‘13, Class Valedictorian and Class President On June 2, 2013, we graduated our 44th class of strong, intelligent, remarkable women. Merrill Auditorium overflowed with family, friends and emotions. Guest speaker and alumna Amber Mooney, CMHS ‘04, reminded the audience and especially the graduates that the many gifts of a Mercy education may not be apparent right away. They are, however, instilled in you forever. “The education you have received has instilled in you the formula for success,” Amber explained. “But more importantly, the spirit of Catherine McAuley, the woman, has taught you the art of fulfillment. At the end of the day, without fulfillment, success means nothing.” Commencement is truly the fulfillment of years of hard work, hopes and dreams. We are so proud of the Class of 2013. They are truly women of vision. “McAuley has taught me so much about myself and how I should treat others. When people are that interested in you, that supportive of everything you do, I, as well as everyone else, know that something special is at work.” —Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Gajewski, CMHS ‘13, Class Salutatorian Julie Chandler, CMHS ’88 with daughter Emily Chandler ’13. Rudolphe Zaharis Planned Giving: Sister Mary Denis Schwartz Society The first bequest to McAuley was secured in 1968 by Sister Mary Denis Schwartz, the Superior General of the Sisters of Mercy in Maine. The number of boarding students at St. Joseph’s Academy had fallen to unsustainable levels, and the Diocese of Portland intended to close Cathedral High School because of the condition of the building. Through Sister Mary Denis’ initiative, the Sisters of Mercy donated the land to build Catherine McAuley High School. Sisters also donated their bequests from parents and loved ones to construct the building. The commitment of the Sisters of Mercy to the education of young women was memorialized in one bold step. Today, we ask alumnae and friends to follow the Sisters’ example and provide an estate gift to McAuley. Members of the Sister Mary Denis Schwartz Society have remembered McAuley in bequests, Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRTs), lead trusts, insurance, retirement funds, or life estate contract. Through their generous and wise planning, they guarantee the future of Catherine McAuley High School and Mercian education, and establish a philanthropic legacy.
