Spring 2016 Instructional Technology Workshops Face to Face and Synchronous Workshops Introduction to Screencasting Facilitator: Dave Giberson Feb. 26 9:00 am – noon Miramar W-222 and remote via Zoom https://zoom.us/j/8254669471 District Flex #85940 Screencasting, the recording of computer screen video with voiceover, is both the simplest and most powerful instructional multimedia technique in use today. Though one can learn to screencast in a matter of minutes, the instructional potential of screencasting is never exhausted. Indeed, screencasting is the core technology of the “Flipped” classroom and is incredibly valuable for creating content for online classes. We’ll look at the pedagogy of screencasting and several free or inexpensive tools that are quick to learn and easy to use. Lecture Capture Facilitator: Dave Giberson Mar. 4 - 9:00 am – noon Miramar W-222 and remote via Zoom https://zoom.us/j/8254669471 District Flex #85941 One of THE most popular instructional technology services provided to students across the globe is lecture capture, the recording of audio and video during a live classroom lecture and making the recording available to students via the web, on-demand in a timely manner. Upwards of 90% of students have favorable opinions about this service and speak highly of efforts to make such recordings available to them. While many instructors have dark suspicions about students just wanting to be able to cut class without consequences, numerous studies here and in the UK suggest that providing lecture recording has little or no impact on classroom attendance. In this seminar, we’ll look at two tools that are free (to SDCCD faculty at least) and can be used in any classroom equipped with a computer and projector. Zoom in the Classroom Facilitator: Dave Giberson Mar. 11 - 9:00 am – noon Miramar W-222 and remote via Zoom https://zoom.us/j/8254669471 District Flex #85942 Even in fully online courses, a bit of synchronous interaction with your students can be a wonderful thing. It enhances student engagement and gives your students the chance to get to know you and ask questions in real time. By far the best tool we have available for this now is Zoom.us. Join us for an overview of Zoom and information on acquiring a free Zoom account for unlimited use. We love Zoom and find the experience to be almost as good as being in the classroom. Indeed, Zoom can extend the walls of your classroom to infinity! Instructional Online Video Production Facilitator: Dave Giberson Mar. 18 - 9:00 am – noon Miramar W-222 and remote via Zoom https://zoom.us/j/8254669471 District Flex #85943 Online, on-demand video is a very powerful instructional tool. It’s especially useful in inverted instruction (class flipping) and in online instruction. It can greatly enhance the sense of instructor presence in an online course and promote student engagement in any delivery method. Advances in technology and technique have made production of online video far easier and cheaper that anyone ever imagined. Join us for a discussion of the use and value of online video and demonstrations of inexpensive and easy production methods. Sharing Content With Padlet Facilitator: Dave Giberson Mar. 25 - 10:00 am – 11:30 am Miramar W-222 and remote via Zoom https://zoom.us/j/8254669471 District Flex #85944 Padlet is a simple, powerful bulletin wall application that makes online sharing of all sorts of content easy, quick, and fun. Imagine a cork board that extends forever and reaches everywhere. It’s absolutely the quickest and easiest way I know to share text, documents, images and audio and video links. What’s more, it’s totally free! Join us online to learn how to create your own Padlets and embed them into Blackboard. Captioning Web Video Facilitator: Dave Giberson Apr. 8 - 9:00 am – noon Miramar W-222 and remote via Zoom https://zoom.us/j/8254669471 District Flex #85945 As powerful as online video and multimedia can be, they cannot be used in California unless they are accessible to ALL of our students. It is our legal and moral obligation to see that even our students with sensory challenges can benefit from these wonderful resources. One of the most critical steps in ensuring the accessibility of rich media is the captioning thereof. In this seminar we’ll look at the easiest and cheapest ways to accomplish this goal.
