Solari of Lake Gaston, VCU-CMH’s
oncology program recently added
advanced technology, which will
greatly enhance radiation therapy for
patients undergoing cancer treatment
at the Solari Radiation Therapy Center
in South Hill. It is expected to be
fully operational mid-late July after all
safety testing and quality verifications
are completed.
The technology called RapidArc
is a new approach to delivering
image-guided, intensity-modulated
radiation therapy (IG-IMRT). It
shapes and modulates a highly focused
treatment beam precisely targeting
the tumor sparing surrounding
healthy tissue, and significantly
shortens the treatment time from that

Patients are more comfortable during
their treatments because they do not
have to hold still for long periods of time and
they spend less time in their treatments each day,
allowing them to return to their daily routine.
Making a Difference in Cancer Care
RapidArc radiation therapy is especially effective
for the treatment of head and neck tumors, lung
and prostate cancer, as well as treatment for a
range of other cancerous tumors.

Since opening in July 2013, The Solari Radiation Therapy
Center has provided patients access to radiation therapy
for comprehensive cancer care, far exceeding the volume
that was anticipated for the first few years. Over the past 10
months of this fiscal year (July 2014-April 2015) the Center
has provided over 300 treatments each month, showing the
great need for this service in our area. Patients no longer
have to drive long distances each day for weeks of radiation
therapy greatly improving their quality of life.

Sharing Their Gifts of Art
On July 1, we will celebrate our first anniversary as VCU Community Memorial Hospital. Our
affiliation with VCU Health System began a new era in healthcare for this region. The past year has been
an exciting and busy one as we plan for our new hospital and expand our physician practices.
A Special Thank You to Our Local Artists
In the next few months, we will be unveiling images of our new hospital to the community. We have
selected the contractor and are finalizing design plans. Groundbreaking is anticipated for October
2015 and construction is expected to be completed in a little over two years. The new VCU-CMH
will be a full service 70 bed acute care hospital including an obstetrical and delivery unit and a cardiac
catheterization laboratory.
W. Scott Burnette,
CEO
We are so appreciative of the following local artists, who have graciously
shared their talents by allowing their original artwork to be currently
displayed in the Hendrick Cancer & Rehab Center/Solari Radiation
Therapy Center.
No final decision has been reached regarding the future use of the current CMH facility. A preliminary
study has been completed and the results are being thoroughly analyzed. I will keep you informed as we
make progress with all of this.

Physician recruitment to provide the services needed by the citizens of this region has been a top priority
for CMH and VCUHS over the past year. Multiple new physician practices are planned. Contracts for
two additional general surgeons, a cardiologist and an obstetrician /gynecologist were signed in March.
In addition, an ENT (ear/nose/throat physician), pediatrician and pulmonologist have been successfully
recruited. Recruitment efforts continue for an additional cardiologist, family practitioners and hospitalists.
With the opening of these practices and projected growth in hospital volume, the hiring of at least 42 fulltime employees is planned.
Quality care continues to be a top priority for us and I am pleased to report that we continue to receive
numerous state and national recognition awards for quality patient care and customer service; a testament
to the commitment and skills of our staff, physicians and volunteers.
The past year, our oncology program received full accreditation with three commendations as an
Accredited Cancer Center from the American College of Surgeons. We understand that it is unusual for
a program to receive commendations during the first year of accreditation. Our recent Joint Commission
review went extremely well and we have been encouraged to submit multiple policies/procedures for
consideration for National Best Practice Standards. VCU-CMH was ranked No. 2 in Virginia for quality
measures by the Centers of Medicare and Medicaid Services and tied for No. 1 in the state Anthem Blue
Cross and Blue Shield’s Q-HIP quality measures. In addition, our hospital is the only hospital in the
region to receive an “A” rating by an organization that represents Fortune 500 companies nationally and
the Virginia Business Coalition on Health.
In March, we were pleased to welcome Todd Howell to our VCU-CMH administrative team as
Vice-President of Professional Services. Todd is an experienced senior executive who has extensive
experience in rural healthcare making him a natural fit for our hospital and community. Please welcome
him to our community when you see him.
In closing, I want to thank all of you for your continued support of CMH. Your generous support has
kept our hospital strong and well positioned for the future. This is truly an exciting time for this region.
Best wishes for a wonderful summer.
W. Scott Burnette, CEO S
To the women and men of the CMH Auxiliary—
Thank you for your support of VCU-CMH
Each June, our CMH Auxiliary holds its annual luncheon to recognize the outstanding
accomplishments that its members have achieved over the past year –all in support
of CMH. Last year, these dedicated volunteers donated over 26,809 hours of service
to patients and hospital. In addition to the thousands of hours of service, they also
conducted numerous fundraising projects throughout the year to raise funds to support
CMH. At their luncheon on June 2nd, outgoing President Dorinda Paxton (right)
presented a check to CEO Scott Burnette, in the amount of $50,000, completing a
pledge of $250,000 that they made in support of the 2011-2012 Capital Campaign.

Care remarked, “This new gift from the Solaris puts us at the level of therapy of that in Richmond or Raleigh. It will
dramatically shorten many patients’ treatment times, which also allows us to schedule more patients each day, all
which will benefit our patients. In addition, it will give us the tools to offer many new specialized treatments that we
previously had to send patients up to Richmond to receive.”
In 2011, Sylvia and Bill Solari generously donated $1 Million to support the construction of a radiation therapy center
at VCU-CMH. Named in their honor, The Solari Radiation Therapy Center opened in the summer of 2013 and is the
only radiation treatment facility in Southern Virginia. With both medical and radiation oncology services, patients
have access to advanced cancer care locally.

When Sylvia and Bill learned of the need for the RapidArc technology, they decided to make an additional gift so that
VCU-CMH could have it available for patients in this
area. They remarked, “Technology that enhances the

Sheri Sparkman-Mecklenburg County
Our CMH Foundation is so appreciative of the service of three outgoing members of its Board
of Directors: Jack Roberts, who served as Chairman; and Directors Mary Alice Park, and Chad

a director on the Citizens Community Bank Board. Over the years, Sheri has devoted
countless hours on a variety of community organizations.
“ CMH was originally started by individuals from our area and has been a cornerstone for our community ever since,” states Sheri. “The community has been an
integral part of CMH from the beginning and the Foundation is the link between the two
that helps our hospital and area grow and prosper. With the connection now with VCU
and the hospital being built, what an exciting time to serve on the Foundation Board!”

2015 Golf Classic a Huge Success, Raising over $33,000!
CMH Foundation held the 21st Annual Golf Classic on May 4, 2015. Thanks to the wonderful support of our community
sponsors, this great event raised a record-breaking net total of over $33,000.
Ken Libby, VP of Finance at VCU-CMH and Chairman of the Golf Classic remarked, “The proceeds from this year’s
Tournament will help create a fund to assist patients requiring Medical Fitness as part of the continuation of their medical care
who do not have the resources to continue.”
“Finances are a barrier for some people who desire to use the Medical Fitness Center. The average age of our member is 69
years old and most of these folks are on fixed income. The scientific literature strongly supports that exercise is one of the best
medicines available to help improve and maintain good health. Getting more people to regularly exercise truly impacts the
health of a community,”commented Donna Jarrell, Director of Rehab Services at VCU-CMH.

event was VCU Medical Center and the
Platinum Sponsor was JLL/ Jones Lang LaSalle.

Senior Development Officer, VCU Medical Center
I am thrilled to be a part of the progress that VCUCMH is making toward the groundbreaking of a
new hospital facility in South Hill! On June 2nd, Mr.
Burnette held a town hall and shared images with
the hospital family and indicated that the plans are
moving forward rapidly. The VCU Health System as
an enterprise is sharing in VCU CMH’s growth and
collectively we have a lot to be proud of. I am hearing
lots of excitement from your neck of the woods!
At VCU, plans for renovations to the Mother and
Infant Unit are well underway and we look forward to
having this unit look as stunning as the new Labor and
Delivery unit completed just 2 years ago.

Have you been to Richmond recently to see Broad
Street? Not only is the city making great strides
in roadway construction to prepare for the Worlds
Cycling Championships, but our own Children’s
Pavilion is making tremendous headway with plans
to open in less than a year. We can’t tell who is more
excited, the Children’s Hospital of Richmond team
or our valet professionals who look
forward to having an additional
600 parking spaces! The Virginia
Treatment Center for Children
will also open in 2016 and we will
continue the multi-phase, multi-year
renovations of our operating suites.
These improvements have regional
benefit that is certainly shared with you all in the VCU
CMH family.
In closing, I want to touch on the news regarding VCU
and Bon Secours stepping away from the independent
free-standing hospital conversation. This decision was
made after very long and thoughtful consideration and
research by VCU and Bon Secours leadership. Institutional
investments continue to abound for pediatrics as do the
investments by the Children’s Hospital Foundation. The
partnership between the health systems in Richmond will
continue when it benefits the children and families of the
communities we serve and we look forward to continuing
to serve one of our most vulnerable patient populations.
